Hate Fingerprints on your Tablet? Try this... - Eee Pad Transformer General

So okay, these are Touchscreen devices. Does that mean we have to just live with it, having the hi-res, beautiful display hampered by grungy fingerprints, and swipe marks? Not if I can help it (and I can!)
People who own these devices fall into two camps:
1) The ones that detest the fingerprints, and are super annoyed at how quickly the display gets marked up. Constantly wiping screen with a cloth, cleaning pad, wipes etc.?
2) The ones who don't give a crap.
For the former, of which I am a member, I have two really good ways of almost eliminating the print problem. It's not 100% but it goes a long way to do to resolving the issue. This is a 2 step process:
First, get some Rain-x or another brand of that type of glass treatment. It's designed for car, to make rainwater run off, and keep bug and crap from sticking to the glass. Pretty amazing stuff actually. Personally I don't think other brands are as good. Treat the screen with it 2x to start, then once a week or a bit more often (I do this about every 4-5 days) Leaves the glass feeling super smooth and slippery. It's an amazing feel, but really doesn't last that long. Also note I have no idea if there are long term effects that would have any effect on the durability of the screen, but is IS glass, hardened or not. I did this to my HTC Phone for years with no negligible effect that I could ever tell.
Second: Wash your hands! They now have signs in all the bathrooms with instructions for morons who have trouble with this complex procedure.
Seriously though... I am not done. Like me, you may have noticed that after washing your hands thoroughly (did you remember to make a good lather?) your fingers end up clean. Too clean! As in "Squeaky Clean" and as you may also have noticed, this does not lend well to swiping on glass (even glass that is super slick with Rain-x) Here is the solution. Powder. Talcum Powder or Baby Powder. Sprinkle a tiny bit on your palms, & finger tips, wipe it in well.
This works AMAZINGLY well. Sounds like a big pain, but its really not, and after both Rain-x and a little talc, let's say 4-5 minutes to take care of, you can sit and use your tablet four HOURS and barely see a trace of any prints.
Of course it all goes to **** when you star eating fried chicken while web browsing, but I can't resolve EVERY problem now, can I? (Hmm, I wonder if those nitrile gloves would work on a capacitive touchscreen...)

Uh what exactly is in rain-x? Whatever it is, I doubt the company envisioned people coming into daily contact with. Similarly, talc is a product that can be carcinogenic when used daily. However it would likely take many years.
Here's a safety sheet on rainx.
www.emedco.info/rtk/common/wcd00008/wcd00802.htm
While it doesn't seem awful as it's mostly water and alcohol (I don't know what some of the other chemicals are) it is only approve for occasional contact and it does warn the the product cancause drying and make one more susceptible to skin issues.

I just my jacket sleeve to wipe
I've noticed that if it's squeaky clean it becomes harder to scroll and swipe so I leave it a little dirty/oily. The only thing I can't stand is dust.

I'm definitely a number 2. I can't remember the last time I wiped the screen. I wonder what the white stains are...

Screen protectors.
While I'm not particularly a fan of screen protectors, I was testing one recently for my Transformer and it fits perfect and you can't notice it... and one of the bonuses is that it doesn't show finger prints.
The Transformer is REALLY bad for finger prints. I've even had other people point it out. While I'm typically anal about finger prints, I use my TF too much to sit there and wipe it down every 5 minutes... and its summer so I'm not wearing sleeves.
I plan on writing a review for the screen protector after a few more days of using it. I haven't wiped it off yet since I cleaned the screen to apply the protector and it looks clean still.

Screen Protectors could help

I guess if it's a satin or similar, non-gloss it would be a big improvement over the stock glass... What brand did you get? I have gotten pretty good about laying them on a phone display, might be another story getting a perfect placement on a 10 inch screen!
bobloblaw1: Talc is dangerous? Kill me now! I would stay away from electronics entirely; according to Greenpeace: "Electronic devices are a complex mixture of several hundred materials. A mobile phone, for example, contains 500 to 1000 components. Many of these contain toxic heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium and beryllium and hazardous chemicals, such as brominated flame retardants." Better sell the Transformer and switch back to smoke signals... oh ****, that smoke is just FULL of carcinogens... Want to sell that SCH-I500 cheap?

I don't think I would recommend this. Rain-X is for use on the external surface of a windshield. It has some staying power. Lord knows what extended contact can do to your skin or if there are other more subtle things that can occur to the sensitive lining of the nostrils or eyes.

I just have a suede cloth i use when I notice prints

Hmm, an anti-glare screen protector is ALOT easier! Plus, it also reduces the glare and you won't have to lug around rain-x and talcum powder with you....

Another cool trick is to actually dry your hands after washing. It works equally well...

Dried Rain-x wont hurt you. Just use latex gloves when applying if you're paranoid about skin contact.

HD2's display indeed covered with glass, and it's very scratch-resistant (video)

Here you go - if you scroll down to the first video on the page you'll see how they scratch HD2's screen with keys, a knife and scissors - and none of these leave any traces on the screen.
Warning: This is not for the faint of heart. Unless you are used to eating babies for breakfast you may be better off not watching this brutal torture video. Here's a quick test to check if you're ready:
1. Do you plan to start using an electric vehicle to help stop global warming?
2. Do you consider your personal contribution to the cause of Free Tibet insufficient?
3. Did you ever believe a politician?

Wow, now that's hard glass...no screen saver needed for me.
I felt literally sick after watching that
Waouh ! no screen protector for me too !
Yikes, but boy are those camera pictures crap, why did they put that pile of ****e in it. What a let down.

Personally i'm seeing a smudge over where he was scratching, without cleaning the screen no conclusive information can be taken from this.
Well, he says there are no scratches left, for what it's worth. I would trust his opinion in this case rather than impressions from the video.
well even if their was scratches on teh scree from SISSORS it is still impressive. i mena come on, the guy was trying to scratch the screen and it diddnt.
what it doesnt show on the video is the amount of pressure he applied though.
I'm sure you can scratch it, picking the right tools and the right pressure. But I think it's rather safe to assume that it's scratch resistant enough to keep the phone in your pocket without any shields.

agreed, i think the point behind the entire "scratch proof" is to prove that placing it in your pocket without a screen protector will not have it coming out looking like a touch HD 1 This is great news in my humble opinion!!
not sure what is so bad of putting a screen protector, really? I won't take a risk at all to have a permanent scratch on my device!
Well, because I hate doing things like applying those damned protectors; because those protectors get scratched fairly easily and your device starts looking like crap; because I can never apply them accurately enough so that they don't have bubbles underneath.
I hate them with a passion, really. I even wanted to by an iPhone because of this. When I first heard about capacitive screen on the Leo I didn't give a damn about multi-touch (and I still don't care much about it). My hope was that HTC would use a glass screen surface. Now I'm happy. The screen is scratch resistant; if I still manage to put a scratch on it, I'll have it replaced - it's not that expensive.

agree 100% with u, man i loved those iPhone screens, i could care less about the multi touch, i mean great, but if my HD 1 would have that screen, i'd be more than happy using it for a good more couple of months!

it seems like not a reliable test to me, the reviewers seems using light pressure doing the test. And I really don't believe that any phone in the market can be really scratch resistant. Why taking the risk. In real world usages, there are many things can scratch glass surface very easily, and why leave some permanent scratches to the expensive device? What is so wrong with a screen protector?

My screen is a dust magnet, anybody have the same issue?

I am currently not using a screen protector and I've noticed my screen is a dust magnet. I get an substantial amount of dust latching on to my screen (if it was just a bit I wouldn't bother). Is there any liquid solution I can use to make the screen more dust resistant? I am currently using lens cleaner and disposable microfiber cloths to clean my screen. Anybody else getting the same issue?
I just ordered a SGP crystal clear screen protector because I noticed how popular they were on the forums... but it won't arrive for another week.
maybe u should clean up in ur cave
If by cave you mean the city of Toronto (yes I collect dust while walking around the city), then yeah I'd like to. But all the mayoral candidates are crap and our politicians are corrupt as hell. Cleaning ain't gonna happen. Thanks for the suggestion though.

turn 'dust collector' off

Thanks for letting me know.
Since I've got the phone I've been cleaning my screen with a camera lens cleaner solution. I'm just concerned I may have wiped off a coating off the glass, or the solution itself made the surface more adhesive. I'm sure it won't be a problem once the SGP protector arrives.
I know nothing about the hardware so please correct me... The screen is capacitive thus using electricity to detect touch. If for some reason the shielding is broken i can imagine it is a little bit static thus attracting dust. It could well be that my assessment is bs.
happens to my phone too.
My guess is that you have rubbed off our dissolved some sort of coating. I've had mine here in Vancouver (so the same Bell model, probably) for a couple of months and have never noticed anything I'd describe as dust, maybe some good old sweat and grease.
If you don't mind my asking, why were you cleaning the screen in the first place? Why use any sort of cleaning liquid if you're gonna clean it at all? Wouldn't the microfiber cloth, or kimtech wipes be enough? But again, why do it at all?

Recent study reveals germs and bacteria make your phone more dirty then a toilet seat.
I don't need a study to tell me that, the toilet seat is one of the cleanest parts of your house.
Still, you don't see people washing their money, their keyboard, or their dish sponge obsessively...

I guess you could try brasso gadget clean or something. I have never tried it but its meant to be anti static. Hope that helps.
Personaly i clean my phone weekly not for the germs but to remove crusts. I use lcd screen cleaner btw. But if you'll ever have to take care of a baby you will quickly get into the habit of cleaning everything.
this is now getting way off topic, as I'm sure the baby isn't playing with the i9000
but to keep that train of thought going, first time parents do tend to clean everything thoroughly (and hourly), but by the time you have your second or third you realize there's really no need to scrub everything with antibacterial sprays...
anyway, I'm curios whether someone knows if a capacitive touchscreen, gorilla skin, or the SGS's implementation of both has some kind of coating that's vulnerable to being taken off with lense cleaning fluids
http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/08/brasso-gadget-care-polish-review/ that's the brasso stuff. I have been using the sgp ultra clear. Its pretty decent thought nothing will beat the bare screen. And I have noticed it is slightly less responsive. Before with use the slightest touch it would register my finger. Now it seems like I need to apply abit more pressure.
Also when applying the screen protector be VERY careful. I wasted the first one because of dust getting underneath. very annoying so be careful and do it somewhere dust free and as quickly as possible.
Although I wash my face with biotherm homme exfoliating face wash twice a day, I don't have the best skin in the world. I tend to accumulate oils as the day progresses and my phone tends to share a bit of it. With that said, it was necessary for me to clean the phone every so often. The reason I used lens cleaner was because it was readily available and I figured if it was gentle enough for a camera lens, it should be more than apt for glass.
I'm just speculating there may be an anti static layer I've cleaned off. I wouldn't be surprised if there was (I mean they do sell anti static sprays). Atm, I'm just waiting for my SGP Ultra Crystal screen protector.
In the worst case I'll also try Brasso and/or an anti-static spray.
As for applying the protector, I think I'm going to use the steamy washroom method.
Btw, thanks to all who have added constructive suggestions and input, I really appreciate it.
I now have the same problem on my new Pixel 7 Pro I bought like a month ago. It's screen is dusty whenever I get it out of the pocket no matter what pants.
Searched everywhere and can't find anything useful. My first guess is some kind of static electricity. I've tried:
• other phones
• anti-static screen cleaner
• letting the battery die and keep it uncharged for like half a day.
• a bunch of different jeans/pants
• even tried vaccum cleaning my pockets and trying to pick up anything that's impossible to see with human eye by a lint roller and duct tape.
Putting on a screen protector film or tempered glass would be my last resort.
After 30 minutes in pocket it looks like this. It's really embarrassing when I have to get it out in front of other people. Also attaching a photo of my pocket so you don't think they are messy or something. Other phones do not have this problem in the same pocket

Not sure if you can, I yanked mine off so fast, it was like I was 5 again again on Xmass morning. I have never used screen protectors on anything and frankly I have never got a scratch, I think they are huge ripoffs. The screen on the Xoom is very tough gorilla glass.
I WOULD recommend the Motorola case that snaps around it, some people complain that you can't charge it with it closed, but that is very minor. Otherwise it's a good case. You will want a case not only to protect against droppage but to protect the screen and make it overall less slippery when you carry it (often under your arm). It also kind of Hides it, so to most people it just looks like a little black notepad, which keeps a lot of people from asking what it is.

you can use it. I kept mine on for a while yesterday until I was ready to install my screen protector. Only downside is it feels real gritty but it works fine

That is the reason I bought InvisibleShield, the same reason I got it for my phone. It helps to reduce glare and fingerprints.
I kept all the plastic on mine for about five days until my skinomi came. I didn't want a single scratch on my baby while i waited for the full carbon fiber/ screen protector to arrive! Worked fine with plastic. Edges started to peel back after a couple days, that's it.
I've had mine on since day one. Figure when it starts to come off I'll just take it off and do without. Not worried about scratches, just seemed like it'd allow me to be lazy about cleaning for a while if I kept it on over the screen.

I'm sure you know most techies (and clumsy people?) like keeping their gadgets as perfect as they can. If that means covering it in damage-resistant plastic, then why not? I've never been one for screen protectors... but I definitely see the point. Full body protectors also seem very useful. You can bump into things, drop your device on the ground, put it in bags full of other stuff, throw it around (not horribly, of course) and still not have to worry about damage.
Its much better than letting that one little scratch you tried so hard to avoid get on your device. Unless you just don't care. However, after paying 100+ dollars I would surely care. Can't have expensive things that look like trash.
My original plastic is still on the face, after 5 days of use I finally took the other plastic off.
I'm having a real hard time deciding whether to put a screen protector on this thing or not. For the first time in a decade of using the stupid things I think I'm going to try going without one. I'll be heartbroken if I end up with a gash though. This is my first Gorilla Glass product so it's a foreign concept to me.

Yep, same here but I guess I've developed a different kind of "analness" eg, instead of keeping the plastic on the leather couches, I clean and condition them every 3mos (with Lexol).
Instead of putting a screen protector on my Evo, it always flies solo in my pocket everywhere we go (keys & nicknacks go in the other) and slide it in with the screen facing my thigh
Not sure I can fit the Xoom in my pocket but it'll stay in the safety of the home most of its life.

that's a special post for people like the OP. I wrote it back in may of 2009.

G2 upgrade

HEy guys I've owned my G2 since Nov. of 2010 and it has the battle scars to show it. My battery door looks like CRAP. OEM battery still doesn't last me long and I have a small blemish on the top of the phone. Not to mention my hinge is loose as hell. So I devised a plan. I am going to "upgrade" my G2. Hinge and all. In total it has cost me $58.98 for the whole process.
- $2.45 for Screen protector (anti-glare / anti finger-print) 3 pack
- $29.99 OEM HTC Evo Shift 4G Battery (1500MAh)
- $16.00 OEM Battery Door Cover
- $2.84 Premium Hard Rubberized case (Black)
- $5.78 Springs for the Hinge
- $1.92 Car Charger. (Yeah I know)
But all of this from Amazon excluding the springs. I will post a link for those later when I locate it. But for $58.98 for a "overhaul" that doesn't seem too bad? I decided to buy this whole thing at one time so I know it may take a few weeks for the parts the come but hey! Doesn't hurt to make my phone look brand new?
Just wanted to share this info for those who may have been interested in doing specific things to their phone and money is a issue.
Ive heard that the touch screen for the G2 is Gorilla Glass, so since there is no scratches on it yet, there shouldnt be anytime soon (as long as you take care of it). I done the whole screen protector thing, and after awhile, it takes away from the beauty of the phone. i know - it's my opinion.
I have done the hinge spring replacement, which works EXCELLENT! The best damn thing i did for my G2! it will take you a full afternoon to do-it yourself, but it's SOOOO worth it.
I also replaced my stock battery with a Mugen Power 1800mAh Extended Battery. This is such a worthy investment. It gave me another 5 hours to my phone. I'm a HEAVY user (GPS, Navigation, games, internet, texting, email). I purchased the battery from the source company instead of depending on a third party company.
My screen is good but it seems to be impossible to keep people away from my phone. I am getting mine form HTC. So it is worth it to do the Hinge + Spring mod?

Yep! Well worth it! Just follow the tutorial HERE. It might be scary, but after completion. I can now pickup my phone by the screen alone, and it will not open. I can also pick the phone up from the back, and even shake it, and it still wont open. It must have been a design flaw or something, but my phone when new had a very week spring.
If its impossible to keep people away from you phone, just keep a few extra polishing cloths around to get rid of all the fingerprints. I personally just dont like screen protectors in general.. i think they take away from the aesthetics of the phone. I had a Vibrant before I upgraded to a G2, and from the first day, I put on a screen protector to prevent scratches. Well, after awhile the screen protector on the phone started to look like CRAP. I mean WHY?.. i asked myself WHY? I figured there were a team of highly paid engineers which selected the type of screen for our phones that wont scratch under normal to heavy use.. Of course there is always the exceptions, like if you work in a job with a lot of sand around. Sand is the enemy to our little touch screens, even Gorilla Glass can't hold up to sand. Anyway, please excuse my rant - it is my opinion.
Its greatly appreciated. I shall keep that in mind. I eventually take them off after about a month.

Sounds like your experience was with a cheap screen protector. I use Bodyguardz, and you can't tell its there, by look or feel. Its been in place for 6 months now, and no visible scratches, and very fingerprint resistant. But cheap protectors (3 pack for $2.45 the OP mention probably apply) do scratch easily and attract fingerprints and smudges like crazy. The included protector with my old AT&T (Tilt Pro 2) lasted about a month and looked like crap, like you said.
Of course, its completely a matter of personal preference. But some people on here have had scratches from what they claim is normal use. For me, I'd rather put on a protector (a good quality one, that doesn't affect the look or feel of the phone), rather then get a scratch and wish you had used a protector.
There is a screen protector that's worth $21 at BestBuy called the Zagg Shield. Is that even worth the price? Looks flimsy

I doubt it. Bodyguardz (dry apply, screen only type - not full body) goes 2 for $15 plus shipping. So unless you found some smoking deal, it seems unlikely they are going 3 for $2.45.

If it is in fact Bodyguardz, let me know where you found that deal!
This whole post comes from Amazon. Its the only place I feel you can get a good deal on accessories to be honest or OEM

If you look around the Accessories subforum, you will find good things said about Zagg. While I haven't tried Zagg myself, I think they use a very similar material to Bodyguardz, if I'm not mistaken. The material of Bodyguardz is thin and very pliable/flexible, but still offers great protection.
But $21 is a bit pricey to me for just the screen protector, and only one of them.
I've got a zagg on my vibrant, put one on my wife's g2, one on the way for my son's LG Optimus. Best screen protector ever. Lifetime warranty, install on The Wife's G2 took 3 minutes (Thank God I got it right the first time!), neither of us notice they're there. IMO, worth $20.

Hmm, I shall see about one of these.

I have no idea why a screen protecter is needed for a G2? Especially if one uses any kind of protector casing. I have never used a screen protector and my phone has fallen off a moving car, dropped on floor a few times, used on the beach numerous times, and in out of my pockets. Not one scratch to my screen. Screen protector is a waste of money.

Here here! Totally agree!

I agree with redpoint on this one. Although you may feel your screen is indestructible at this point, it really isn't. Just one scratch from a random thing and you'll be wishing you had a screen protector. Better safe than sorry, I'll pay that 15 bucks so I never get a scratch that will annoy me the rest of the phone's life.
I have a high quality screen protector on my Tilt2 (can't remember if it's Zagg or Bodyguardz). Some say that these nicer ones have a rubbery tacky feel about them and take away from the slickness of the screen. I must agree with that, the one I have is a bit rubbery. Most people on these forums hold the Clarivue protectors highly though. They say they have no rubbery feel and take nothing from the screen. They have many different variations of the protectors too.

Knife vs G2 glass screen...

It is just hard to scratch the G2 glass but definitely not impossible. My first G2 somehow managed to have two fine scratches on the screen, so I knew I wanted a screen protector for my second G2. I used a Crystal Clear one before and liked it until I felt a matte finished anti-glare one. I started trashing the crystal clear one that I had on, saying that it would attract too much fingerprint and face oil. I love the anti-glare screen protector and I love the way it feels. It does take away from the screen a little but not that much.
IMO, a full rehaul of your phone could also consist of a new housing. I just took a look on eBay and the price is insane! So maybe just throwing on a case so you can forget about any aesthetic flaws that you phone may have.
But I definitely think you should do the spring/hinge fix. I think that in itself will have you satisfied with your phone! Good luck!

While fun for shock value, and possibly a decent simulation of having the phone in your pocket with your keys, there are a great many things that are harder than steel on Moh's scale, that your phone might come into contact with. Plus, there are many common types of glass treatments and coatings that resist scratches from a knife, so again, the demonstration is really not all that meaningful.

Exactly. Many of these same things were being said back when I was on my old HTC Kaiser. People said it did just fine without a screen protector. I took my protector off, and it did seem to do fine for a few months. But over time, I noticed fine scratches developing, and one day got a huge gouge. I really wished I had stuck with a protector. That wasn't Gorilla Glass, but it seems that some people are having similar experiences on the G2 regardless.

My Bodyguardz protector did seem to have a slightly tacky feel at first. Really only noticeable when trying to swipe across the screen quickly (mostly while playing games). But this actually seemed to go away after a couple weeks for some reason, and it feels nice and smooth to me now.
To me, the look and feel of a good protector is not perceptible (versus no protector), and its worth using one. But I can certainly understand if somebody that is more perceptive or picky than me, may prefer to go without.

Using Rain-X to prevent fingerprints.

Has anyone tried using Rain-X? I'm probably going to give it a shot by cleaning the entire screen, and then applying it to a rag, and then onto the screen itself. From what I've heard, it will last for about a week, but it's supposed to be pretty effective.
I'm not a clean freak or anything, but they're very visible unless it's in a dark room or some place without much ambient lighting. If anything, it's helped with how frequently I wash my hands.
I'll be reporting back if I put a coat on!
not sure why this would work. rainx is like an oil. oil doesnt mix with water, thats why it just flies right off your windshield when your driving. your fingers produces oil, not water. like dissolves like. i doubt this will work. please update us on this though.
I didn't have any Rain-X on hand when I first heard about this, so I used carnauba wax instead. It still gets fingerprints, but they're not as noticeable and they wipe away easier.
Rain-X doesn't necessarily repel oils, but it does fill in the microscopic pores in the glass, making for a smoother surface that makes it harder for things to stick to it.
Search the forum for about 10 diff threads regarding this subject for more detailed info if your worried about chemicals in rainx etc.
I have been using it for about 5 months on various devices. usually 3 coats at one time will last me about 1 month or so with very little fingerprints and the ones i do get wipe off very easy.
It works great.
