Hi,
I need an app that has capability of watching only 3G network, not 2G. The 3g watchdog app captures both 2g and 3g. My network plan is 100mb for only 3g. If I exceed the limit for 3g, the network goes to 2g and the 2g network is limitless and free. So I don't need to calculate 2g network and I have to watch only 3g network, not 2g. So is there any app to do this?
Regards.

I keep noticing the data status going from 3G and HSPDA every now and then even when I have full bars. This can't be good...
Anyone else experience this?
Is there a fix?
I also get the switching thing on my phone but only when the HSPA signal is weak and it's not that often. Is this affecting the battery life on your cell phone?
It's normal. If you have issues just set it to use 2g only mode as that saves a heap of power

How do I set this? I checked in settings->wireless and network->mobile networks-> network mode, but see only an option for GSM only, WCDMA only.
If you're with Bell in Canada, there is no option for 2g only as there is no 2g network. Don't worry about the 3g/H switch, this is a common occurrence on most phones on most carriers. My GF's HTC Magic on Rogers did this too.
Gsm only is the 2g mode you want

thanks! I see the option now.
GSM stands for 2G
HSPDA stands for 3G
when it changes between 2G/3G (G/H)[Automode] it's sort of Prefer 3G, fall back to 2G if 3G signal is weak.
you can easily change it off Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Network > Network Mode as you've said
actually my network doesnt support 2G (GSM). Like I said, it bounces between 3G and HSDPA (3.5G). Wonder what this does to battery life?
there is no problem, 3G is not as fast as HSPDA
in perfect reception you get 3.5G (HSPDA)
in not so good reception areas you get 3G
in very poor reception areas you are lucky to get 2G (EDGE)

wtf.. when i go to settings->wireless and network->mobile networks i see "data roaming" "access point names" and "network operators".
i have a bell vibrant unlocked and on rogers and id LOVE to force gsm only.. are you running the updated firmware or something?
Just got the G2...awesome so far...only one annoyance. The tmo HSPA+ network has been available to me almost everywhere (in houston) but it seems to switch to the Edge (3G) network whenever it wants? Is there a way to force or to stay on the 4G network? Thanks!
GPRS (G) AND EDGE (E) are both 2G technologies (EDGE is on top of GPRS). 3G is UMTS, and HSDPA is again on top of UMTS. You can find a setting for 2G only in Android options, but there is nothing to force 3G speeds. The reason is that phone uses HSDPA all the time unless there is no HSDPA signal, then it drops to EDGE, or GPRS.
So you cannot force it, it's defined by what can the mobile network provide at that specific spot. If there is no 3G/HSDPA coverage, you have no 3G speeds. It is as simple as that. It's like if you would like to use WiFi even at places with no WiFi coverage - you cannot, because it's not there.
Ok, but lets say for instance sitting at my desk at work i'll be connected HSPA+ for 10 minutes and then it drops down to Edge? Whats the reason for that?
You were at the the borderline of what is and what is not a acceptable level of signal from the network tower. For 10 minutes it was above the limit, then it dropped and it was not more usable, so the phone dropped to lower speed.
thanks for the explanation man!
Wrong forum though. This this about having separate G2 and DZ forums is bound to lead to lots of this, I guess.
Per this thread:

I can change the WCDMA and GSM settings... I want to disable 3G and use ONLY HSDPA or GSM.
Is this possible?
Thanks
Don't think it is possible because HSDPA is virtually 3G too (3.5G).
Its a case of either have both or choose between 3G or GSM
You will be on HSDPA when you have coverage. When you dont, your phone will fall back on 3g, and if you dont have that coverage, it will fall on 2g. Its made like this so you have continuous coverage. I doubt you can change what you want to use.
What is the difference between the network modes?
2g/3g +2g
2g/3g only
2g/3g only/3g+2g
i'm guessing the first only uses 2g and the last only 3g but what does the second option select?
thanks.
well, the phone will use 3g where possible, and will drop down to 2g when there is no 3g coverage of your provider.

then what is the difference between that and the third option of 2g/3g only/3g+2g.
Hello,
In my House i only had 2G network available. Since 1 week i also have a very bad 3G connection with 1 brick and many disconnects. The 305SH is trying to connect to the 3G all the time and is not staying in the 2G network with good connection.
I dont have the options like other Android Phones, where i can choose to stay in the 2G network.
Is there any other way? To force the Phone to stay in the much better 2G network?
