Nexus S [GT-i9023], No Service on 2.3.6 - Nexus S General

After the 2.3.6 update my Nexus S has no service. Before this update I had the latest stock rom rooted. I tried flashing new radios for i9023 with no luck. Moving back to stock (and unrooted) 2.3.4 or 2.3.3 did not fix the problem. I would apreciate any ideas, guys.
PS: I don't if it's importand but on fastboot mode it says
Code:
BASEBAND VERSION I9020XXKD1
BOOTLOADER VERSION I9020XXKA3
and on Settings -> About it dispays "baseband unknown"

Flash CWM recovery through fastboot and flash 2.3.6 ROM from here,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664

I already did that and i still have no service.

Is CWM working for you?

Yeah, it's version 5.0.2.0 and working just great.
Is it right to have
Code:
BASEBAND VERSION I9020XXKD1
BOOTLOADER VERSION I9020XXKA3
on a GT-i9023?
I believe that's the problem. Right?

Think you flashed the wrong ROM, The 9020 one, Did you try downloading the 9023 one and flashing.
Wipe data/cache before flashing.

i flashed "Android 2.3.6/GRK39F/XXKF1 Radio/KA3 Bootloader" and i had wiped data/cache, dalvik cache and battery stats. i always get
Code:
BASEBAND VERSION I9020XXKD1
BOOTLOADER VERSION I9020XXKA3
on fastboot and "unknown baseband" on Settings -> About

Ok, now i'm trying to flash 2.3.4 stock rom via odin v1.82 (samfirmwares.com).
I just don't have any idea how odin works. Guys i could use some help, i need my phone

Download a radio that works well with your device from the radio thread in development.
Go to 4shared.com from your device and download root explorer for free version 2.16
U didnt have to downgrade for this because it happened to me. Go into root explorer and into efs files and move by press and holding on the files "nv.log"
"nv_data.bin" & nv_data.bin.md5" into root of SD Card... restart Phone and u should be ok =]

ok, on 2.3.6 i flashed the "XXKF1-GRK39F-radio-nexuss-signed" radio. Then i moved these 3 files on sd card folder and i rebooted. still no service.

Use a different radio. That's the same radio that gave me hell. Flash a different radio and u should be fine... but I think u need to delete the files u moved over from efs file ... they should still be in your efs file but delete the ones In Root Of SD. After u flash the radio then move them. Restart ur phone and u should be OK. Just because u moved them doesn't mean they aren't in the efs again. Just back up your efs file first =] just in case

Hey man I had the EXACT same problem.
I was flashed Oxygen version something, rebooted, and no service, no baseband, no nothing. This was two months ago. My phone is at Samsung being repaired currently. The GSM radio somehow overloaded and burnt out. I wouldn't be surprised if this is what happened to you too. Some other guys said you can jam a bit of wire in the antenna port behind the battery cover and get a tiny signal, but I didn't try this.
I really can't wait to get my phone back. Good luck.

Any luck finding the solution? I have done exactly the same thing and I am having the same problem
Device: GT-i9023
Disply on bootscreen:
bootloader version - i9020xxkl1
baseband version - i9o20xxki1

Backup your /efs folder, backup EVERYTHING, just in case... I'm paranoid so I did it all
ROM NOTES:
Got deodexed from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11256520&postcount=1
Modem:
KC1
Busybox:
1.18.4
Hosts file updated for ad blocking using:
http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm
Here's the steps I followed:
Save all files to folder/desktop
Connect phone via usb and copy JVH_KC1_BMC.zip to root of sdcard
Restart phone in download mode
Open Odin and click PDA
Select Speedmod tar file
Uncheck Auto-Reboot
Check F.Reset Time (I don't know what it does, but it's always checked)
Flash the tar.
Once complete and the box says "PASS" in green, unplug your phone and pull the battery (I was told it's safe, as it's in the MIUI instructions as well)
Put battery back in and start phone in recovery with VOL UP+HOME+POWER
In recovery choose to update from zip
Choose file from sdcard
Choose the JVH_KC1_BMC zip file and update
The phone will restart/install.
Once it's started up for the first time I recommend restarting in download mode and flashing the stock JVH kernal
You can also use any kernal you want.
Let me know if I can help at all. I was trying to make a completely odin flashable tar for this but failed miserably :9
I'll do my best to answer any questions however this is my first time making something to flash for you all
Note:
I'm not sure where to put this, sorry to mods/admins if it's in the wrong spot, please let me know
Hi,
I saw your thread, and I found it very interesting for people who own a Bell SGS 9000m Vibrant and wanna upgrate to Gingerbread.
So I decided to flash the Gingerbread JVH ROM just like you did, but I need to know a few things:
1. Will I be able to downgrade to my original stock froyo after this flash ?
2. Will I be able to update via Kies in case Bell release an official gingerbread update ?
3. Right now my phone is SIMUnlocked, will I lose my SIMunlockation after the flash ?
4. And is my actual configuration right to excecute this flash or should I flash something else before ?
My configuration is the following:
Baseband version
I9000UGJL2
Firmware
2.2
Kernel
2.6.32.9
[email protected] #3
Build number
FROYO.UGJL2
galaxy s vibrant bell
gt-i9000m
Thanks for your hard work, I hope to read back from you soon.
I have exact same configuration and exact same questions as poster above!!!
Still no answer... Guess we'll have to try if wanna know...

1. yes, it's possible
2. yes, but you would either need to downgrade first or do a kies hack
3. no
4. you can do it straight

I am going to try. So there is no need for me to select any Pit file or did the guy forget to mention it ? Also can we tick the repartition option in Odin?
Sorry if I ask usekess question I am used to flash android but new to the SGS flashing...
when you repartition you need a PIT file.
My advice is to not repartition unless you need it.
Too late... I did it got stuck into bootloop. I had an error when I tried to install the zip from the recovery (I had recovery 3e) : E : Short write of /tmp/sideload/package.zip (No space left on device) . However, I flashed the back eclair JHL and went back to the stock eclair rom. I am going to restart from there following your intructions. I now have recovery 2e ( Somehow I can't get ClockWorkMod Recovery to load directly; it always send me to recovery 2e and there I apply update.zip to go to CWM recovery)
Thanks for your help, I'll let you know if I manage to get it done.
Still get the error E:Short write of/tmp/sideload/package.zip (No space left on device) when try to install JVH_KC1_BMC.zip from the recovery 3e ( this recovery comes right after I flash SpeedmodK15E_withLoaders.tar ...
Don't know what else to try... Help please..
I did it a slightly different way. From 2.2, I flashed a stock 3 part gingerbread rom (phone, PDA, CSC) with bootloader update using ODIN 1.82. I then flashed CF root gingerbread kernel for CWM3 and then flashed the KC1 modem from clockwork recovery for the 850 band.
Could you please show me the exact files you used so I can try to do the same ?
Aren't there at least a couple threads on how to install jvh/jvp on an i9000? Its the exact same process as those you just have to flash the kc1 modem via cwm after you are done. It sounds like you guys are experimenting too much.

Our canadian phone is not really different from all the other ones, so you don't need a special "Bell Canada" installation.
If you want JVH, you can follow this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818556
You don't have to do everything like fugumod, etc. I would flash JVH via odin and then flash CF root kernel via odin so you get CWM3.
There's also leaked 2.3.4 JVP gingerbread out, if you feel inclined:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881
There's a way to enable 850 band on the different gingerbread modems, but i never bothered, I just flashed the KC1 modem for Bell which has the band (via CWM3). Search for I9000UGKC1

Okay I am really starting to freak out now...
I am stuck in bootloop, I can't get out og it. I tried flash Back the Stock Bell Firmware but it keeps boot looping. Download mode is okay. But it started doing this I had a message like sd could not be mounted in recovery 3e. Now I can't even access recovery after I flash Eclair but Download mode is still okay...
Aby ideas ?
Have you tried flashing back the stock JL2 firmware from bell? (found on samfirmware.com)
I've never encountered this error before, I wonder if it is a problem with the bootloaders, as the official froyo firmware from bell had a secondary bootloader and gingerbread has its own bootloaders as well.

I imagine you'll need the stock bell firmware as said above and also the proper PIT file to go along with it.
Sent from my Darky's i9000m
Also if you repartitioned it when you tried to flash the whatever it was when you tried you will also have to repartition it when going back down to froyo.
2.2 and 2.3 use different bootloaders therefore if you try to mix and match rom's without the bootloaders and repartioning you will get a ****y phone.

[Q] IMEI Failure

Hi Guys... semi noob here.
I have a gt-i9300 that I have been messing around with, and I seem to have lost the IMEI number, im getting004999010640000 / 06 when I dial *#06#. I have the actual IMEI behind the battery, but no idea how to put it back in
I am currently stock with root (cf auto)
Things ive tried:
EFS Pro - Just kept putting it in factory mode
NV-Items Read/Write v1.0 - Failed... phone does not answer
something I found on google using adb shell - did nothing at all
flashed many stock rom's / Modem's / RIL
TWRM Recovery wiped EVERYTHING to the point where twrm warned me about rebooting due to no OS installed
I am currently reverted to stock:
Build: JZO54K.I82XXELLA
Baseband: I9300NELK2
Kernel: 3.0.31-742798
Android: 4.1.2
Root: CF-Autoroot flashed with Odin 3.07
Branded and Simlocked with H3G (Three United Kingdom)
This is a UK model.
I really need some help here as I would like to get this up and running for carrier unlock (code requested from Three) so I can use my O2 sim in it)
PLEASE can anyone tell me how to get my IMEI back without a "box" (I don't have £130+ to spend!!!!)
Thanks in advance
Tidus32x
If my memory serves me right you have to flash a stock firmware and you shoukd get your ime back

Did you flashed any 4.3 or 4.1.2 with new EFS partition format.. if so find that rom and install modem corresponding to that rom.
Also - do you have previously EFS backup?

I'm not sure but i think that you need to go back on 4.3 - i hope that you are made update to v2 of EFS during that previous flashing.

I believe I did go to EFS v2 at that point. Will flashing the 4.3 rom put my IMEI right again?
flashing 4.3 or a modem from emg4 onwards 4.3 changed the efs partition to efs v2 firwares with modems prior to emg4 cannot read this hence duff imei when you flash back an older stock rom.
Just back to 4.3 and all will be fine. If u didnt make backup of EFS v1 you cant back to 4.1.2

well, just flashed back to 4.3 stock (no root, full details below) and still false IMEI. I am assuming that until I get my IMEI back, the I9300 won't connect to the network at all?
Device details:
Android: 4.3
Build: JSS15J.I9300XXUGMJ9
Baseband: I9300XXUGMJ9
Kernel: 3.0.31-1902166
IMEI: 004999010640000
IMEI SV: 01
Flashed to 4.3 stock, then boot into recovery, factory reset and wiped cache
any other ideas?

[Q] IMEI lost ater installing a custom kernel

Hello guys i've installed merruk kernel 2.0 pre-final and my imei is blank. It don't recognize my sim card. I've made a full backup in CWM but it not worked. I want to revert ext4.zip process and install my stock kernel that i have a backup, is't possible? Will it restore my IMEI?
most likely the ril is not compatible with your baseband
I keep saying you cant use an old kernel with a new firmware baseband or you will loose imei
you can solve this by replacing the ril lib with an old baseband version
see
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52449987&postcount=232
try the hyp 8 ril - you can try others if you wish
if you want to return to stock you will have to flash stock rom via odin to convert your system from ext back to rfs
see
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2568853
you can then restore your stock nandroid backup as long as you restore it using the kernel and cwm from which it was made on

My current ROM is the stock rom of S5360B, how do i do it without brick my phone in this case? what other methods should i try to restore my IMEI if this method not work?
Current ROM info:
Model: GT-S5360B
Version: Android 2.3.6
Product Code: ZTO
PDA: S5360BUTME2
CSC: S5360BZTOMJ1
MODEM: S5360BUTNA1
The GT-S5360B is exactly the same phone as a normal GT-S5360. It will work without much problems (if any), and it most probably won't brick your phone. Flash the zip for your baseband as per nornal (remember to mount /system)
Any other methods? I'm not too sure, apart from using Galaxy Toolbox to check your efs partition is damaged and backing up your efs partition.

no difference - you can flash 5360 on a 5360b if you want to
the only difference is the B version is branded varient of the 5360
you can use any file you like from the 5360 without any problems plus if you really want the 5360b firmware to flash stock rom via odin at a later date its also on my firmware thread

Never tick repartition in odin
all you have to do is flash pda modem and csc - DO NOT tick anything extra
your phone will convert back to rfs from ext if you flash stock rom via odiin
I posted a load of rils from different basebands in post #2 of this thread - you can use what ever one you want - ril is dependant on rom firmware and kernel being used

It worked! I've installed the stock rom and my IMEI is showing and the sim card is ok. Thank you all. But i have one more question:
I don't intend to continue with stock rom and stock kernel. What should i do to prevent this error occur by installing any custom rom or custom kernel? I've heard that i have to backup the efs, but the efs folder is always blank on galaxy y.

the efs partition is empty on galaxy y because that partition is not mounted
you can backup your efs partition with galaxy toolbox but that wont help you with the problem you had

to solve this if you use an old kernel with a new firmware replace the ril lib of the new firmware with one from an old firmware

I have n9005 32gb and i fix the problem.
What I have find out that if u flash higher version of baseband u need to flash the same version that u had and not the base line.
At first I had the following rom:
9005XXUEND3_N9005OLBENC3_N9005XXUENC2_HOME
After a few weeks I flashed the following rom:
N9005DXUENE4_N9005OLCENE5_N9005DXUENE3_HOME
Yestarday I have tried to flash the following rom:

have you updated the baseband?
maybe need to flash NON-HLOS (Wifi Fix). This is the LTE modem and should match the installed baseband otherwise wifi and sound problems may occur.

I just had the same problem as you. After a lot of reading, this is how I solved it:
1) Wipe data/cache and re-flash the original stock rom (everything back to day 1 from new)
2) Donwload and flash the modem for the new ROM you want in the phone slot
3) Flash the same new modem again, but uncheck "auto reboot". Once done, manually turn off the phone
4) Flash the new modem a 3rd time with "auto reboot" checked again. In settings > about device, the boot loader should now be updated.
5) Flash the CWD recovery (or custom recovery of choice)
6) Flash the new ROM
DONE
I have flashed the modem successfully, now the baseband has been updated. Then I reflashed the new ROM using ODIN. But still the wifi doesn't work.
