Low phone storage - Nexus One General

So suddenly I got the new market and with it like thousand of updates.
Problem is now I'm constantly running on low phone space.
All apps left that can not be moved to the SD-Card are a must have.
So deleting them is not an option
Except the ones that I can not uninstall (like Google Books) guess because they came preinstalled.
I can't even install some new apps as they require more space then I obviously have.
What are my options?

Move apps to SD (non-root and no apps required on phone)
I just did this yesterday with my Nexus One...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1001202

Read the FAQ, question 9.

I can not do this as I run a stock rom I think.

Did you read?
From what I can tell, you do not need root to do this, just a working ADB connection. No additional on-phone software is required.

Given your parameters, only solution is to partition your SD card, create an ext-flavored filesystem on one of the partitions, and run one of the available software solutions (referenced in the links above) to permit saving of ALL apps and app data (and dalvik cache) on the SD card.
If you do that, cheers to you, but do some critical thinking and research before buying into the Class 10 hype. Most benchmarks have shown that the bottleneck in the N1 SD read/write speed is not the speed of the card, but rather the combination of software and hardware that handles SD card input and output. In fact, on some benchmarks, Class 4 cards perform as well as Class 6 and Class 10, and in some, Class 10 cards underperform Class 4 (which may have to do with the different standards applicable to Class 10 versus 2,4, and 6...the older cards had to meet a certain minimum read/write speed on a fragmented card for a single large file transfer; for Class 10 the specification is sequential writes on a defragmented SD card -- if you ask me both specifications are insufficient...how about a spec that tests sequential operations on a fragmented card?).
Or, alternately, consider removing some apps. Unless you are a developer, I can't see that you "need" to have more apps than the admittedly meager flash allocation can handle. You may want them, and want them very badly, but I've always found that a self-critical distinction between needs and wants makes me happiest in the long run, because it's easy to ignore wants. If this doesn't work for you, look above. Whatever floats your submarine, man.

I never had any problems with the sd-card performance.
Doesn't matter anyway as my problem is that there are 9gigs of free space on the card but I fear I will soon run into the problem of being unable to install any more apps (even to the card) as the phone space is too low.
This actually happens already now when updating apps.
Unfortunatly I did not manage to get the adb thing working yet so I can not test SocialVisors solution.

I'm unrooted as well, and have this problem as well. I'm hoping the nexus prime hits soon enough (and on tmo).
Otherwise, I'll look into rooting (which I'd rather do, if I'm going to modify, I'll go all in), I think one of the benefits is being able to uninstall unwanted stock apps and keep them off. So like the amazon mp3 store, for instance.

Okay so I now managed to get ADB working.
I could move some heavy apps like swype. I could not move "Astrid Tasks" as then the widget does not work anymore. Hopefully that is the only app.
I am now back at 30MB free space.
But still there are some hughe apps, like Google Maps(11MB), that can not be moved at all.
And yes, Google Maps is a must have!

Did you read the FAQ?
Did you read rallyemax's answer, and put attention to the first paragraph?
Are you looking for a solution, or do you just want to complain?

I alread said I run a stock rom (not froyo).
The only one who is complaining is you.
You can just ignore this thread if you don't like it.
But thanks to everyone so far.

In that case, it's simple: you can't do a thing.
Your 2 options are:
1) Run a custom kernel over your stock ROM, or a custom ROM, and install A2SD support. Need to root / unlock the bootloader / hack the bootloader, of course.
2) Do nothing and don't look for solutions that don't exist, just accept the fact that you're stuck with less internal storage that you wanted.
No third option.

Question: Updating memory for Apps to SD.

Hey, atm while i was learning more about the G1, I kept the 1 GB in there. I now want to know more about the installing apps to SD part of it. 1st off after I get a memory card. (Which btw I saw I can get a 2 GB model. How do I know if its good? Sandisk work ok or do I need a SDHC or no?
Also after applying the fix that does apps to SD. Would that mean anything I install from the market after that point auto installs to the SD? Also is it worth it? Right now I was comfortable installing to the internal memory this way I could unmount the SD card and not worry about something going horribly wrong that needed access or so. (I like to know about things I do to my phone before doing it.)
Anyways just wanted to get some info on this a lil more and know if its worth it so I can continue looking into it and how to do it. Thanks. =)
1. I'm not sure about sandisk, but the one i use (Transcend) works just fine. I'm not really that too good with sdcard specs lol...
2. Yep, every app you install from the market will be installed to your sdcard. Well, to me, it's really worth it because you can get more apps and not really have to bother with that low memory warning... I also think it removes some lag lol
Ok sounds good, so to confirm, I DO 100% need a 2 GB at least to use? How do I know if its the right type tho?
Also my current apps, is there a way to move them over easy enough or do I need to wipe my phone and reinstall everything from scrath? ( One of the reasons I avoided this since I really did not want to lose a couple of these apps since they are older ones and not "Trial" or they were removed, or just hard to track what I did have)

From what I've read, you only need 500 megs of space on ext partition. More than that, and it'll lag a little bit.
I actually have my sd partitioned 6gb/2gb fat32/ext2 respectively.
A class 6 sd card (you can tell by the small number in the corner... no number, probably a class 2 then) is recommended, but I am using a class 4.
If you put music and video on your sd, I would recommend going with a 4gb or higher card.
So where does it install the apps to? EXT2? So normally you only wanna have 500 megs on ext2?
But 1 GB wouldnt be worth doing this right?
Also any news on if I can move all my apps to it or if it had to be reinstalled?
Also how do you really go about finding a app that is no longer on the market but yet has updates for?

I wouldnt use a 1gb card, but thats because I like to put music and videos on my phone.
All applications downloaded after you create the symbolic link to install applications on sd will be installed on the ext2 partition.
Everytime you wipe (factory reset) your user data, only a few commands are needed to restore the symbolic link. So, no you won't need to reinstall your apps (your unprotected apps anyways).
I would use atrackdog to find apps that arent on the market but have updates
Apps to sd
here ya go dude

just follow these instructions, theyre the ones i used.
If you don't know how to use, or setup ADB, then at the bottom there are some instructions to use terminal emulator
Hope this helps
well I use atrackdog. But are you saying I should just use that to reinstall them? Most of my apps are from the market except for some. However while it says it has a update for a app, when I goto the market its no longer there some of the apps.
You wont lose the apps... no need to worry about that, it doesnt affect what apps you have, it just simply moves all the files from the apps to your sdcard... the only thing removed or changed will just probably be a theme and thats it lol...
cool. After that, I assume I would need to turn off the phone to take the card out and add files to it? Also if I wanted to "upgrade" the card later on, how would one move the files over? Use Linux to transfer the files directly to the other SD card or what?
Atrack will sometimes track beta testing versions that are only available to testers, so you wont always be able to utilize atrack dog to install updates.
Trust me, if you like downloading and trying out apps, you'll be glad you made the switch
Woot, I did it, Using a Kingston 2 GB
I updated to the JFvMOD by LucidREM, which I assume I had to do 1st for the SD apps right? Then I did the copy apps and data, seems everything converted over correctly, so Im happy about that, finally have workable space again and my G1 doesnt force close anymore due to lack of space.
Now come some other questions. I know in Linux I can access the memory card with a adapter to put files on. However in windows, how will this work? If I use usb will it only read the fat32 partition or will it try to read both? I know when I plugged it in by a adapter directly, WinXP acts like it doesnt see the memory card. It knows one is there, but it wants to format it. (Which I dont, granted odd since I do have the mod on WinXP that lets me see EXT3 partions)
Now the bigger question. When JF updates his regular version (Whenever G1 updates) will I be required to wait for THIS modded version to be updated before continuing or how does that all work for updates now? I used to know with the regular one but now that I use a mod of a mod version. Kinda confused where I stand. Heh.
But yes, so far I am happy I made the switch, got 58 megs free of internal heh. (I assume thats correct on a normal thing?)
Also later on with new apps etc, will they try to use internal memory or will EVERYTHING run to the SD card now? (How do you even check the EXT2 free space now? Astro or what?) If it does use internal, do I need to somehow do regular transfers over to the SD?
Anyways I know alot of questions, but least after this Ill have a better understanding how to keep proceeding. Thanks. =)

Official MicroSD card support, what Google has said

So, apparently, it is still not supported and Google has no solution yet.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2275..._details_emerge_the_little_things_add_up.html
This detail, which came out in conversations I had with Google engineers today, explains why the Android file system organization is, well, a mess, and why I’ve had such inconsistent experiences with Android and removable storage across the various Honeycomb tablets I’ve tried (and I’ve tried all of them that are available so far).
“We don’t want to expose the user to file locations,” explained Hiroshi Lockheimer, director of engineering at Google. “How do you manage that as a user? The not-good answer is with the file browser.” Lockheimer says that many of the experiences I’ve seen so far are what individual hardware manufacturers have enabled, as opposed to what Google has provided natively. The good thing is that Lockheimer says Google is looking at ways to do this; but the problem hasn’t been solved yet.

Is it me or does that say nothing still?
Google says they don't want to give you a file browser / file explorer / file manager.
Fine - there's plenty of third party apps to that on the market - but why not fix the SD card slot support?
Although I agree that some of the structure stuff is a bit of a mess - there's lots of random folders created on the SD card, like .android_secure, .bookmark_thumb etc. that you probably don't want end users seeing.
At least now it's clear that it's Google who has to fix the SD Card issue and not Motorola.

I honestly didn't read that at all...?
I read that google were working on some sort of file manager, not SD card? am I misreading it? as far as I can see file manager, and SD card are separate issues?
also the transformer, and custom kernels have the sd card slot working, so not sure who is at fault for the xoom
Why is there a difference between the tablet and the phones?
I have access to the SD Card and file system there.
Not like every Windows user on the planet has never seen "My Computer". Organizing files is not some obscure concept that is to high level for users.
From what I can understand:
USB file system means the OS access the usb disk in block level which the app (file browser) will have access to the full path of the file.
The one that is supported by Honeycomb right now is MTP. This is totally different compared to USB. The actual file system is implemented by the device, not by the computer's operating system.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Transfer_Protocol
My prediction, this USB thing will be solved by the upcoming ICE CREAM SANDWICH.
Because by then, phone and tablet are merged ... everything which is supported by phone (like SD card) must be supported by tablet.
So, yeah, we must wait till end of this year or early next year (worse case).
Still, it is too long for Motorola with their "promise", no?
@Kcarpenter
Very true - but I think the problem may lie with the Xoom using the MTP instead?
or is that a load of rubbish?
Eitherway, I guess from the Google point of view - they want it simple and try and hide the stuff they don't want n00bs messing with (a bit like Apple hide everything too so all their iOS are n00b proof!)
Also Phones open up to mass storage straight to the card - you don't get access to the internal memory at all. Whereas with the Xoom you would want access to that because there's loads of space there

What about just fixing the kernel like timat's - that'd do the same job for now
Still don't understand why they would slack on getting the SD card implemented. They have so much riding on honeycomb success. And the LTE radio needs to get installed too. Time to ramp it up.
I agree they should be able to enable it considering one of our own has already done so with a custom a kernel, I still love my xoom though!

and the LTE thing is running on awhile now - didnt someone say that the samsung tab 10.1 might beat Xoom to be the first LTE HC tab if Moto don't buck up?
Who needs google when you have bigrushdog?
Just did the 3.1 update and SD card slot still doesn't work. I thought it would've fixed this.
Yea, I read that article yesterday. It has NOTHING to do with the sdcard support.
Google was explaining why android in general has a fairly chaotic/unintuitive filesystem structure... NOT why they haven't biuld in support for SD.
it was well known this update was not addressing the sd slot. No wjere not one single ppace has google or moto saidnthe sd lotbwil not be active by the deadline they stated. They could give us slot access right now but the issue is as has been aluded to they would either have to give full file sys access or no file access like the phones. For those that will say it doesn't matter give us access. It matters to them as they will be creating huge issues with tech support by the much larger majority of users that would delete things that would kill or hamper the device. I mean even on here you have tons of people that can't follow clear simple directons to flash an update without screwing it up some how. Can you imagine Suzzy home maker or joe the guy who can not figure out how to do a windows update would do with full access. My guess is they will be doing a update with a file manager and permision set so nothing past the sdcard parent folder can be accessed and programs installed will have premissions set to prevent accidental delete without going into the file manger settings to change them to allow change of permisions.
This will solve both the issues and allow both sd card and internal storage access without opening up the core files to tinkering by BDUs

Been trying to do this for two years, still need to use sd card as internal memory

I ran out of storage for new apps a long time ago. My device is kind of useless for new things because there is no internal memory for INSTALLING APPS, even after removing 75% of my apps which includes system apps. There is just no more space. It still has 2gb of internal memory left BUT THAT CANNOT BE USED FOR INSTALLING APPS, stupidly. There are 8GB of total internal storage space.
I have plenty of storage for data. Just not for apps. I have a 32GB SD card as well.
App2SD apps, I maximized all possible data to be moved.
Apps with data larger than 20MB I just deleted the whole apps.
Still no more space.
Additionally, it means I CANNOT use this tablet for things like games, or for storing map data from gopilot live as a backup in case my phone dies. Which is VERY limiting. Especially because I used to like to play games on it but I had to remove all the games to make way for utilities.
Thus I DESPERATELY NEED to be able to install UNLIMITED NUMBER OF APPS using the SD card for internal storage.
I tried the vold.fstab method HERE, but it did not work.
PLEASE HELP!!! THANK YOU!!!
p.s. I WOULD BUY A NEW TABLET WITH MORE MEMORY BUT NO 7.0 INCH TABLET EXISTS THAT IS BETTER THAN THE TAB 4 BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL MAKING HUGE 8.0 and 8.4 INCH TABLETS THAT ARE TOO BIG SO I AM STUCK WITH THE TAB 4.

i'd say you just need test different apps all over and over akd different methods from XDA, i have on my phone sdcard as internal memory but same method wont work on tab 4..... you should use folder mount to move appdata to sdcard and use it from there, it helps if you have big app data on internal sd card.

No I tried that already. It does Not work because of the error "this has been limited due to kitkat so you're not authorized" or something to that extent. It's not an error, it is a limitation of the kitkat (and all subsequent) operating systems. Google did that on purpose to try to force people to have to upgrade their phone.

Cyanogenmod isn't an extreme solution, it runs better than touchwiz IMO and it takes up significantly less memory, which is a fact. It's more like saying, "I don't like Windows," and the reply being, "You should try out Ubuntu," especially since both cyanogenmod, like Ubuntu, is completely free

uh if youre not ready to install different rom i guess theres no solution
I'm having the exact same dilemma. In my case, not going to CM (or another rom/firmware/kernel..) is due to the fact that my children use the tablets, so the KidsMode needs to work. I've looked at that one from Zoodles, and its rubbish compared to the Samsung one available on their Galaxy devices. My original post never had any reply other than my own update.
By the way: I'm still searching for a solution to this... If only Samsung would/could release Marshmallow on this tablet, the Adoptable Storage option could be used...
Now, if you can just hold your breath...
lol I know right...?
Full disclosure: I've given up hope of finding a solution that will work with (essentially) stock 4.4.2, so now I'm looking into how to get the TouchWiz framework to run on a rom/kernel that DOES support support an external/internal swap.
Of course, that does nothing to help the OP, but IMO the best solution has already been presented to him: Install a custom ROM that supports what he needs. It's still the best solution since there don't seem to be any TouchWiz-dependent apps he needs.

If you are willing to root your device you can use Apps2sd to actually move(link) whole app into sd card.
You'll need to repartition your sd card to do it, but there are good guides to do it.
EDIT:
Oh it's renamed app2sd but here is the link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.co.pricealert.apps2sd&hl=fi for it
you can also try link2sd app

I don't know about how limited it is, but it's completly different than native android moving apps to sd. Linking is like actually increasing your devices internal memory(not really but somethign like that). Also it's easiest/(propably)best way to get more memory for apps.

Enable adoptable storage on ASUS Marshmallow Beta firmware

Although ASUS has removed the new Marshmallow option to format the external SD Card as adoptable storage, it can easily be done via adb. Just follow this guide:
http://www.modaco.com/news/android/...e-adoptable-storage-on-your-s7-s7-edge-r1632/
The only difference I found was that on mine the drive location numbers were separated by a comma rather than a colon (i.e. 169,64).
Here is a screenshot of my 16GB model with 16GB SD card adopted:

Thanks that's super useful, I will give this a try and let you know if it works for me, I don't know why ASUS removed this feature as its probably the best feature of marshmallow, anyway I think its recommended to have a minimum of a class 10 SD card when using adoptable storage to ensure there's no slowdown when accessing things on the SD card.

Pretty sure they removed it to keep things simple and because it doesn't work perfectly. Even with a class 10 SD card, it is noticeably slow. I will probably move most, if not all of my apps back to the real internal storage. But that's fine. At least it means I don't have to worry about running out of space, and don't have to manage where podcasts, videos, photos etc are being stored.

Yeah I guess so and the speed is a big issue, I think you'd probably have to use an UHS SD card to make it work smoothly. But still useful
I agree about the UHS card. And even amongst regular class 10 cards, I understand there is considerable difference. Mine was a cheaper brand and performance is not great, but I'm told that Samsung Evo ones, for example, are better.
Also agree that it is a useful feature. Because it needs some management and user interaction, it's probably wise that makers like Samsung and ASUS have taken it out, as it might cause more harm than good for average users who really need things to just work. However, it's a nice feature for us tech nerd xda types who can handle it appropriately, and it's an easy little hack to enable it so it's all good. And let's be honest, we all enjoy little hidden extra features that we can hacktivate by ourselves!
I swapped out my cheap generic Class 10 SDHC for a better UHS (40 Mbps) Class 10 SDHC one today. The difference is very noticeable - apps on the UHS card open almost instantaneously, unlike on the regular card, where there was a long delay before they opened.

You're getting it all wrong. It's all about profit. If the manufacturers leave in the option to adopt external storage, knowledgeable consumers will have no reason to spend more $$ and buy the manufacturers' devices with larger internal memory. And yes, it also saves them a lot of support issues with people complaining their phone is slow, when it turns out they are using slow SD cards.
So, it's nice that Google added that feature, but ultimately I believe very few of the really big / mainstream manufacturers will actually not disable it. As was mentioned in many articles around the 'net, this feature is really meant for AndroidOne devices, cheap devices with very little internal memory.
So, could anyone post Sequential Read / Write and Random Read / Write speeds that would allow SD card to match or get close enough to ZenFone 2's internal storage?
It's really hard to choose the right SD card when every article in the Internet literally starts and ends with "class 6 card is worse than class 10 card but they are both ok for Full HD video derpaderp..." I KNOW it's OK for HD-video but that's not THE ONLY THING I am going to do with my SMART-freakin'-phone! We are not 5 years old, we can understand a bit more complicated technical specs than that.

You'll never get close to internal speeds. Even with the fastest cards.

Well, if we can trust this article, http://www.anandtech.com/show/9251/the-asus-zenfone-2-review/6 , it doesn't seem like completely unreacheble. But it's hard to compare results from different testing software.
Btw, I don't need something extremely close, all I want is to get apps to launch from SD card within reasonable time.
Non-UHS Class 10 card was useless, but now that I am using the 40 Mbps UHS card, it's not that bad. Apps open reasonably fast and hasn't really behaved any differently. And this was a cheap 16GB card from a Japanese maker called Greenhouse that I picked up on sale for the equivalent of about $7 .
I was able to set up the storage as adoptable on my device, but no apps allow the option to move to the SD card. I'm guessing if I want this to happen I need to uninstall/reinstall the apps, since they go to the most available space by default?
Edit: what about copying over data to store externally on the card? Since it's formatted as internal, of course it doesn't show the card in file explorer apps or in Windows. I've got 28 gigs of media files to copy over from the old card and I'm not sure where to put it.
Hallo.
I've tried to enable adoptable storage and it's success. But after 1 month, my sd card has been crash.
The problem is my (real) internal storage now only can run the app, but can't use to save file, music, video, etc. Even I can't use my camera to take photo, bcz the (real) internal storage is not available.
It's bcz when I enable the adoptable storage, it's separated the (real) internal storage only for save data app, and internal storage (from sdcard) for save data app and also file like music, photo, video, etc.
How to enable my (real) internal storage to save data file like usually?
Plz anyone can help? I really appreciate it.
android 7.1.1 ??
Will this work on zenfone 4 max with android 7.1.1? For ADB tools, I wasn't sure what to answer (Y or N) on some of the installation questions. I said N to system wide and N to install drivers. The instructions above seemed ambiguous that you could say yes or no to skip steps, but not sure if that's why it didn't work for me or if this tutorial was for older phone software. Also I have windows 10 and power shell window not command window. Any help much appreciated!

So...no movement on rooting?

Like the title says, no one been able to make any progress on rooting this thing?
I haven't...
I don't care about being able to install custom ROMs, I just need Google Play to look at somewhere other than internal storage to update apps. I have a 128gb card and I can install whatever I want to it but I can't update apps because everything wants more storage space than is available in the amount left on the device after the base OS and apps are installed to just hold the temp files to update with. If I could alias that to the memory card this would be the perfect cheap tablet. As it stands now I can't even update the built-in apps.

I've got the same problem. If only I could update and install apps. You know, like what a tablet is supposed to be for?
Are you using unified storage (formatted as internal) with your SD?

Yeah. And like a lot of things with Android I'm learning, nothing quite works like you think it would, especially if it means you'd have an easy time with something.
I guess on some level we can blame B&N for not putting more than 8GB in the thing. Heck, 10GB would fix the problems.
I keep returning here hoping for a miracle. I too have an SD configured for adoptable storage. But Google forces most of their own apps including non-essential crap onto internal. At this point I don't think even a base load device will function properly since updates to Google's own apps have bloated the onboard memory requirements.
Its a shame. I got these for my kids thinking they would be good low-risk devices that they could use to read, game, etc. I guess that's still partly true. The kids could use them as frisbees
I don't think Google forces their apps to be on internal. I've installed apps from the Play Store like Google Translate, and it allowed me to move to SD card. So I think it's B&N. They preinstall apps, and preinstalled apps can't be moved.

It seems that while you can move many of the apps, they move right back when updated (which happens frequently). So trying to keep enough free space on the built-in storage is a losing proposition.

Yeah. I don't even have enough space to update or install apps, even with a 32 GB SD card. Apparently the Play Store isn't smart enough to be able to download and install/update an app directly to the SD card. I've had to turn off Auto-Update Apps because it would push incessant notifications that I don't have enough space to update X app.
I also have a Nook 7 with 128GB SD card formatted for internal storage--and I can't update apps either. Storage says I have 3.14 to 3.21G (depending) out of 3.36G available storage. I'm new to this, but I'd thought formatting the SD card as internal storage would solve the problem, and it obviously hasn't for me or for several others in this thread.
Does anyone have any ideas? I don't want to root until July when the warranty runs out.

They do have a new version that has 32GB.
