171 density - Acer Iconia A500

I'm not in front of my acer right now but could someone give me some instruction to getting my density to 171? I've done it on my nook coolor a million times but I'm having a brain fart this morning. A buddy of mine was telling me about it but I can't get a hold of him.
Thanks,
Dave

Not sure how to do it with say editing a file but there are apps that will do that in the market
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium

The app is called LCDDensity for Root. I used it on my Nook Color but haven't tried it on my a500 yet. The only problem is that when you turn the tablet off, then back on, the density change goes back to the one defined in the boot.prof file.

I was told if you set the density in build.prop to 171 you get more of a gingerbread experience. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong but its not working for me. It makes everything bigger but not seeing a difference other then that. I also just bought LCD density changer... makes it a little easier. Lol.
If anyone has any info on this that would be cool.

I believe that is all changing the LCD density does. The larger the number the bigger the icons and less room on each screen.

I can see why you'd want to change the density on a phone, but on a tablet....?

I prefer the extra screen real estate so I don’t change mine, but some people prefer the larger icons on a tablet.
By the way, changing our LCD density can affect how the Google Market Place appears. If you change it to something non standard, some apps won’t be available to download.

Best DPI/density value for Galaxy Tab

I changed screen density (ro.sf.lcd_density) from 240 to 180. I use ADW with 8x8 icons on screen.
The only thing that disappoints me is that all the graphics and text are not as sharp as on Dell Streak.
So I want to ask you if you have found any screen density value (<200) that makes everything sharp (and small) and there are no graphical glitches.
182 for me so my camera still works
Sent from my SGH-T849 using XDA App
If I am correct, the tab has physical DPI 170. so theritically the screen should be sharpest if set density to 170.
But indeed, the setting 170 is not as good as expected. These reasons make me change back the value to 200 instead.
1: The IME I am using the panel "shrinked" to one side then it's difficult to use by right thumb finger.
2: The status bar has background mismatch even it not impact the daily usage.
3: The camera may stop working which reported by others but I didn't try yet.

VISIONary temp root and LCD Changer

The capability of changing my pixel density using LCD Density Changer was one of the last few questions i had before i jumped shipbto the shift. I figured that maybe others would have this question too.
I was able to change from a 240 to a 180 with no issues if i use the preview button while on temp root from VISIONary. I'm sure the other sizes will work well too!

Why would you want to change the pixel density to less dense? Are you having a hard time seeing the text on the screen?

Its the other way around. By decreasing the pixel density I am increasing the amount of screen real estate.
Its like changing your monitor resolution from 800x600 to 1024x768. You make everything smaller so you can fit more on the screen. I tend to do this and then use adw.launcher to set my app drawer to 5 columns and have more then 4 application shortcuts across my desktop screens.
For my evo 160 was a sweet spot but on the shift its 180. Any smaller and you would struggle reading text or taping the correct space on the screen.
I hope you're not using Sense with LCD density changer. It's useless without being able to adjust icon rows and such.

Your exactly right. I am using adw.launcher dreaming of the day when I can put cm7 on and do the same thing with out the sense apps.

ro.sf.lcd_density=200 - Frickin love this

So what does this do....

With AWD Launcher i now get a screen with 6 x 6 (columns, rows). I finally get to use the big screen on the Desire HD.
Compatability?
Well i have no idea what sense would do and themes may have issue alone with some apps.
i know that Camera360 Ultimate don't like this until you run in hardware compatibility mode.
But ill never go back to ro.sf.lcd_density=240
This command is in the build.prop file located in the system folder. I recommend 'Root Explorer' for editing. And its all done at your own risk, always backup
FYI, i even did this to my Desire, not HD, and its just brilliant.
I also run at 200dpi, I find if you take it any lower that compatibility starts to become an issue and some games don't look nice in 70% screen usage. Personally I use ES File Explorer to do the editing of build.prop
wont sense be incompatible with this dpi setting?
that screen is so cluttered. I like mine to be open with everything big, easy to see and press. Plus the app drawer is where I keep most my apps
reminds me of an iphone

yes, thank christ don't run sense it slows dhd down uneccessarily.
to see the difference heres two images first at 240 then at 200

I'm running CleanDHD which comes with 190 DPI, and i love it. My screen is way bigger now!
Have found three small glitches, but apps and games runs perfectly.
Confirm that troubles occurs with Camera360 but it's usable. Another application having problems with DPI=190 is CalWidget... it just displays an exception instead of my agenda....

can you send the Camera360 dev an email explaining what happens. i don't think that they understood what i was on about
Could you also test wide screen shots with zoom, full zoom or half zoom. I found that it crashes the app at dpi 240 or 200 for me.
cheers,
To save editing the build.prop you can download lcd density changer from the market. A bit easier I find.
I found that sense worked at 190dpi with a glitch on the lockscreen.

the problem with LCD density changer
is that the change doesn't survive reboots, where as changing build.prop does.
I may have missed something but can't get Camera360 crash...
2 other app that are not perfect :
- the stock dialer is too small the dialer part
- freecell has problems too

I have LCD Density changer 5.3 and works perfect for me. Even with a reboot.
I don't see myself going above 180dpi anymore, I just love the screen estate I get with this. Also looks much cleaner.
This is with dpi on 170 and I'm thinking of going lower, the keyboard stays the same size so I go nothing got lose

Correct LCD Density for HKTW 2.3.4

The proper lcd density seems to be 270 for this build.
download 'LCDDensity for Root' by Elviss Kustans from market and set density to 270dpi.
solved the weird positioning of shortcuts and widgets on stock launcher
alternatively you can edit the build.prop
I chose this method to quickly find the proper number
NOTE: The Change in density is required for the stock launcher of 2.3.4 HKTW rom. The device is otherwise crisp at default with other launchers.. So do not bother incase you dont want to use stock launcher.
I'm still trying to decide between 270 and 275.
Build.prop says 275 is correct for qHD screens, but 270 fits a little better.

content on the right edge goes out of the screen
add some 4x1 size widget so that you can compare the space left on both edges.. 270 looked perfect
IMO 260 is ALMOST perfect
would love to try this if i can get one of the root methods to work but thanks for the info! more motivation to try harder lol
270 or 275 I still have the huge space in the bottom part.
Yeah I'm going to use a launcher until the vertical spacing can get worked out.

Same here, i really don't see anything wrong with 240 either. 270 is definitely too big for me though

anyone know how to remove the black bar in notifications?
Problem is whenever you change the lcd density on atrix the dialer crashes. I've been trying to do this since atrix first came out and knowone has been able to make it work. Are you saying u can change the density on this new build and the dialer does not crash!!??

Yes.
The dialer on 2.3.4 works fine at higher pixel densities.

Wow that is really good news! I always wanted to make everything a bit bigger as I thought the icons always looked a tad too small on the qHD resolution. That alone makes it worth upgrading!
Off topic but if you use the stock launcher simply for the new app drawer then this tip may help.
It is possible to use the new MotoBlur app drawer with any launcher. Simply replace the new launchers app drawer with a shortcut to 'all apps' app group.

Post your Nexus 5x DPI setting

For those not in the know, DPI setting can be changed on Android devices so that you can basically fit more on the screen. I must warn you that sometimes some apps might not show up in play store as your device is treated like a tablet (for example) - although I personally never had a problem resulting from this.
To change it you need to edit ro.sf.lcd_density=420 line in the build.prop file that is located in the system folder. As long as you can get to that file you can use any text editor to change the line
The default is 420, I changed it to 320 and you can see the results in the attached screes shot. Don't forget to restart the phone for changes to take effect.
Oh you live dangerously.
Mine is at 360 and it's the best for me .
For other people; you can also change it without having to root by using adb.
Holy crap do you guys have Superman vision? I'm in my 20's and I almost had to squint for the 420 density lol.
Mine is currently set to 480, the default for the G2 which has the same physical dimensions for the LCD.

Try using Root Explorer. I've run into issues using anything other than that for things like this.
I'm just glad Google added official support for 420. Looks great with all apps.
480

I use 320 on my N5x as well. I accidentally set it to 220 since that was what I used on my N4 and I didn't realize the resolution was different. I would say 220 is at the bottom end of what I would consider to be usable. It basically fits what would normally be on a 8" tablet on a 5" phone.

Agreed. At 420dpi I have no desire to make it smaller.
I settled on 440 and changed font size to large. 480 made the status bar too big imo. Some of my older apps have too tiny text for my aging 40+ year old eyes :sly:
420pi seems to be pretty solid for me, I truly wouldn't want it any smaller or larger than what it is at.
I use Nova Launcher to set icon size to 145% and system settings to set font size to large. Looks just right to me. Out of the box both icons and font sizer were too small and uncomfortable. Years ago I was an iPhone user and I'm sure I still have some of the DNA, lol. I fill my homescreens with icons - hate wasted space.

I also think 440 is the best size. I'll probably need to resize all of my ROMs I flash. But it's not too much or too little.

You don't have to root to change dpi. I used adb. There are a lot of guides out there. It's very simple imo. Google "how to change dpi without root" good luck!

Forgot all about that method. Using it now good sir
Does the build.prop method make all apps behave properly? I tried using the adb method, but I had a few apps which didn't handle it properly (not the least of which was the Play store).
440. That matches roughly to the same estate as Galaxy S4 - just a tad bigger (as I expected when upgraded 5.0" to 5.2")
I was psyched when my Nexus 5X arrived and I saw that the stock DPI was 420. For the past two years, I've been changing the DPI on my Nexus 5 from 480 to 420...
