How about some info, like which version of HC were you on, and what were you doing when you bricked it?

hc 3.1 sorry im new to this whole forum thing i was using a custom rom when all this happen not the hc 3.1 cant recall the name entirely i used gingerbreak or bread cant recall to root it then i installed cwm on the tablet and flashed a rom from my sd card once again not sure what it was called because ive been trying to fix this thing for 2 weeks and ive seen 100s of files i flashd a rom from the sd card and when i did the tablet said acouple of errors something about a boot img. i think but dont take my word on it cwm was still working fine when i did the flash then when i restarted the tablet it was bricked central lol also i remember when i did clockwork recovery i remember i flashed the clockwork recovery i used the htc desire for my tablet which is the same as my rooted htc inspire it worked fine but i think that played a big part in why its bricked thats all the info i got if any helps it would be awesome

Umm let me see if I understand. You flashed a ROM, but you can't remember which one, you don't remember what you used to root it with, then you installed a version of CWM that is used for the HTC Desire? Is that it in a nutshell?

ok so ive been trying to remember exactly what rom it was i was running hc 3.1 and it was a stock rom i used the new gingerbreak to root it, the one where its like one button tap and its rooted, also im almost sure the custom rom i flashed to the tablet was ROM][JULE8]-=Virtuous Picasso v. 1.1.0=- [Honeycomb 3.1][Kernel: UNITY V5] and i used the htc desire clockwork recovery when i flashed my a500 hopefully this helps more than the other info

Sorry, I couldn't resist. Seriously though, I think this may be your only solution if you can follow directions very carefully:

It's gotten quite a few ppl back to 3.1!
Good luck!

is a stupid question (I was wrong as well ), the update. zip is on the SD and not on a USB stick

For ANYONE having difficulty installing TnT Lite 2.00-2.xx

Read This
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9542514&postcount=662
Alternatively, just read my installation instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842004
I think I'm going to start using a rar format - might be a way to differentiate between the actual release and the update.zip inside. Not sure why I didn't think of that, before.
Still not that simple for me, since even a "Gtablet Vet" like myself tried the OP method and failed. My second out of box new Gtablet went in perma-loop when simply installing straight to 2.0, via recovery folder & update.zip. Ended up having to get CW on the device by putting on the sd card, remapping command and stopping the loop with power + volume to get CW installed. I then had to install TnT 1.02 and then finally got 2.0 installed after that (cache and data wipe of course).
Cleanest way seems install 1.02 via recovery folder / update.zip method and then install 2.0 the same way. Thats is unless I just had bad luck with second Gtablet. VERY possible.
added:
Frankly, we seem at the stage now where CW seems a survival requirement- IF you want to keep trying new roms & updates.

Also don't understand why ppl want to keep standard recovery, clockwork is made to install custom roms so its easier for these task

The only issue with cwm is that it's not easy to remove it, once you have it. I think you need to use nvflash to get rid of it. I love cwm but I can't assume that everyone uses it.
And trust me, not everyone does. I sees posts here and I get PM's as well, and many people are still using standard recovery.

I have found that you can put the stock recovery img (let's call it recovery-stock.img) on the sdcard and get an adb shell while booted into cw recovery. Then it's just a
Code:
flash_image recovery recovery-stock.img
That should get you back to stock recovery.

Flashed 2.0.0
I liked TnT 2.0.0 and it really helped performance but the gtab is still full of issues....
Out of the box my Gtab's proprietary email and photo app forced closed before ever loading. the viewsonic update didn't fix it and so I flashed it with TnT 2.0.0.
I got a System UID's warning while I did it and I guess that was the cause of those apps not working. I then did a system reset to factory default or whatever its called and lost everything but after flashing TnT 2.0.0 again it worked a lot better and the email app worked great, photo app still doesn't work. My new problems are that the sound and and flash don't work anymore. I reinstalled flash and the browser just crashes whenever flash is involved with a site. Sound will sometimes work when I first boot up but it quits after a while, especially after waking from sleep. A lot of the time I get crackles and pops when I first boot up or wake it from sleep.
I am returning this Gtab and I am going to buy another one from somewhere else in hopes that I don't get these issues out of the box.....I haven't read anywhere that anyone has experienced these specific problems other than the sound; as this is a TnT error; so I warn all, DON'T BUY FROM STAPLES!!!

Really need help guys...

I have rooted and installed hboot and clockworkmod. Flash clockwork recovery and installed buzz/oc 1.22ghz CM.zip but now my desire hd keeps resetting on the flash screen. Dont worry mate, your not doomed at all....the buzz kernel has put your phone in a bootloop, you need to flash the rom to fix it, you can flash a ruu (stock rom) or a custom rom which really is the best thing to do...so much faster thank stock...if you like sense then flash leedroids rom...if you like pure android then flash cyanogen...either way you need to put the rom onto your sd card then wipe everything using clockwork recovery...then flash the rom and your phone will be fixed.. If you then want to flash the kernel you should use the kernel utility update software found in the developers forums..
Really dont panic, let us know what rom you wish to flash and I or someone else will help you.

Yes true....but maybe using the kernel utility he can re flash the kernel and push the modules using this software....it sometimes works and would save him flashing a new rom and losing his stock one....I would try this first for sure..
Kernel Update Utility
If you go there, youll be able to flash a kernal easily like rixsta said.
If you still run aground, give the forum a buzz and we can see what else we can do...
Download the kernel utility here ..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=852357&highlight=kernel+utility
Get into fastboot as I said earlier and plug in your usb cable...aahhh the drivers may not install...bet he's not used android-sdk....with a bit of luck he's running windows 7 and they will install anyway..lets say they do..
Follow the utility instructions and flash the kernel...It may fix your bootloop...if not then you are going to have to mount your sd card using recovery and flash a new rom...

ROMmanager is 3.0.0.2 the recovery has not changed since november 10.

Yes it did --- I kinda jumped into it and did not really heed Cyanogen's big fat warnings... (reckless flashing) and I couldnt get gapps to flash -- the stuff from rhcp's CM7 thread -- but I got gingerbread going -- then I got distracted all night...woke up this morning trying to make the phone shape up for work -- that was a #fail and the battery seems horrible (then again by no means was it a proper battery test) -- so I decided to restore and that involved new drivers..(for some reason my SDK at work couldnt find the phone so I had to reinstall a fresh SDK (which i named gbSDK)... then found the current recovery at mybrainhurts.com and erased 3.0.0 and fastbooted the froyo recovery back in and restored. easy pie --
gingerbread is a whole 'nother game -- i just hope theres a way to go back and forth between froyo and GB (and eclair/cupcake/donut) without having to fastboot erase and fastboot flash relevant recoveries.
I am sure folks want to know if the new one fixes the "off" mode...and the answer is - i dont know. I didnt check. i kind of hope not because its a feature rather than a bug. theres no quick way to get to recovery when the phone is off. (on to fboot then to hboot then to recovery is too much work)
Is it even worth it to upgrade at this point in time? I'm a bit worried as it seems to be working pretty damn good with what I'm doing now. No partitions on my SD card because I don't care to put apps on it (it's not the fastest class card anyway).

I read the rhcp cm7 thread and i needed to unmount system before flashing the gapps. Thats why gapps failed because i didnt read!
By Off i meant how cw doesnt let the phone turn off when charging... i hope cw 3.0 lets us keep that feature.
Ill probably give it another go this weekend...it works its just if you wanna go back to froyo you need to replace recoveries manually..not a big deal but frankly gingerbread isnt all that more exciting than froyo. I feel i have what i need.in Froyo..the gb keyboard...the gb market... and thats fine with me.

Erase Recovery option
Call me naïve, but if people are making full-blown builds with an image recovery and everything from the CM gingerbread source (which includes the Clockwork Mod recovery 3.0.0 image if I'm reading the source properly), could you just go into ROM Manager, go into Settings, and check the "Erase Recovery" option to allow it to erase the recovery between flashes?
I would test this myself, but I need to go home and make myself fresh builds of CM7 and CM6.2 to try swapping/flashing back and forth between. I can report back once I get around to it later this afternoon.
If I understand that option correctly, applying a full flash of these alpha builds of CM7 should write the new recovery image (v3.0.0.0), and if you need to switch back to CM6, you should be able to just reflash a full build of 6.1.1/6.2 back and it will restore the older recovery image (v2.5.1.8 according to the latest froyo version).
EDIT: Negate that thought. Not sure how you would go about forcing the recovery image flash while in recovery. I got to research this a little more...

[Q] can't complete nandroid restore

hello everyone,
few days ago i pruchased a new kingston 16g card, and follow the resource bible tried to restore my cell back to stock. i format the sdcard, insert to the slot, and then follow the steps "stock nandroid retore" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=845756
everything worked fine, i am sure it was completed, but at the very last step to reboot my phone, it stuck at "mytouch 4g" boot screen, cant reboot into the system, bricked i think? so i tried another thread by using PD15IMG, finally i can back to normal and a clean stock status.
(my phone is s-off, permrooted, oc1.5g)now my question is, why can't i success the nandroid restore? did i do anything wrong or do i need some more roms/files/images on my new sdcard? after this i even tried to backup my own nandroid backups and then run restore via rom manager, but i still got the same results, can't completed nandroid restore, always stuck at mytouch 4g boot screen
sorry for my really bad English, hope u guys can understand me... i just need an answer/method/guide that i can try some more new roms/oc kernels in the future without worry bricking my phone. dont really wnat to go over and over again the PD15IMG, i got scared though...
Thank you for ur help!
You probably flashed recovery version 3.0.0.5 in which you cannot restore your stock ROM with. If you don't have another ROM, you should install a gingerbread ROM such as CM7 and then flash the 3.0.0.6 recovery available in the development thread. Don't worry, your phone is not bricked. If you can turn it on and get into recovery or hboot, it can always be fixed.
I think your problem is that you had the wrong recovery. Flash Drew's 3.0.0.6 zip file to get that recovery and then pick 3.0.0.5 in more recoveries in Rom Manager. Also do your nandroids and restore in Recovery. I never go thru rom manager, it just works better that way for me.
really thank you both for the quick response
i just followed this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944681 ,looks like i completed all the steps, but when i reboot and open rom manger, it still shows current/latest recovery:clockworkmod 3.0.0.5, so idk whether i did it right or not?
anyways, later on i might try either my won nandroid backup/recovery or the stockclean recovery again, then we will know the results...
i really appreciate for ur help!
Yes, when you open up all recoveries in Rom Manager it will still show as 3.0.0.5. If you followed the steps correctly when you flash that one and open up recovery, it will actually be 3.0.0.6 which will show at the top. This version allows you to switch between froyo (2.x) and gingerbread (3.x) based ROMs.

In clckworkmod it will always show 3.0.0.5. Flash the 3.0.0.5 in more recoveries. Then when you go in recovery it will read 3.0.0.6 sounds confusing but its not once you got it. Happy flashing!

Running Rooted 3.2.1 to ICS? Do I unroot?

I'm running completely stock, no rom anything. Just flashed updates from users here to update me to the latest HC. I received the ICS update but pretty sure it won't work since I'm rooted and running CWM recovery. What do I need to do to install ICS? thanks

I am in the same camp.
I'm running a rooted 3.2 stock by Timmy Dean.
I'm happy I didn't jump the gun when I Saw the update last night, because it seems I would have truly been screwed.
What I would like to know is if a rooted 3.2 can simply be unrooted. Seems this would the simplest thing to do.
Thanks in advance for any and all help.
Apparently the root doesn't matter. It will just be removed when we install the ota ICS. What worries me is recovery. Because it has to boot into a recovery to install ICS. I had CWM installed then flashed to stock by acer recovery tool in the play store. But when I manually boot into recovery, I get a exclamation point inside a triangle. What recovery are you guys running?

I have CWM recovery by thor2002. I think we can't update via ITS unless we flash original recovery

Yeah I think so as well. I flashed stock via the Acer recovery tool but I get nothing when I boot into recovery except what I stated above. I'm not sure if that's right or not.

I was happily running timmydean's rooted 3.2.1 based on the leaked OTA. The ICS upgrade came through and installed just fine. No loss of data and the programs I tried all worked. I was on stock 4.0.4 unrooted.
However, I'm now borked. I rebooted into recovery (Power, Vol -) to see about rooting via the backdoor I'd installed. I had thor's 1.7 Touch CWM recovery installed. I got some weird message that recovery was broken. (Don't recall the exact msg.)
After that, it hung on the "android" screen. Soft-bricked.
So I did a factory reset (Power, vol+, rock screen switch) and ended up back on 3.2.1. Now, the Settings > About > Check update results in the "Network coverage is currently poor. Please move to a location with better coverage to continue." message.
My WiFi is fine, speedtest.net reports a 20 Mbps download. All other apps function well. I'm pulling a DCHP address from my router.
I'm fairly sure this is a badly-worded error message from Acer and actually refers to server overload or some other issue on their end.
Also, installing the latest Acer Iconia Update preps the system for ICS. At one point, installing it allowed the update to proceed, but not to ICS. Uninstalling/reinstalling that update seemed to jog the system at one time.
So I tried wiping data/cache/dalvik and went back to stock 3.2. Same error message when updating. Wiped again and went back to stock 3.0.1. Same error message.
So I'm stuck and am going to give it a few days to see if Acer can sort out their upgrade path. If not, I will probably load CM9 or Thor's ICS ROM. (I do have a Nandroid, so I can get back to where I was pre-ICS.)
All in all, I'm very disappointed in Acer for borking my tablet.
________
Update: So now a day later, the "poor coverage" message was replaced by an "update available". Installed A500_7.014.03_com_gen1, after reboot, another update A500_7.014.15_com_gen1 installed. I am now on stock 3.2.1.
System update shows "Your device is up to date".
Will see what tomorrow brings, but this is certainly frustrating.

Could you guys running the backdoor and still rooted please try this:
1) Try and capture the build no. of the update
2) See if the update will download BUT do not install yet
3) Go to /cache/fota/ and find the zip -
4) copy it to yr external sd
5) post back the build no.
thanks!!!
Procedure for manual install:
1/ rename the file as : update.zip
2/ place the file on the micro sd card
3/ turn off the tablet
4/ press the down volume key and the power button at the same time untill the tablets turns on
5/ the iconia will start the upgrade process by itself.
OR just redownload the update and it install

I had trouble when i reverted to stock in the weekend
and it was a bit of a process to get the OTA's to 3.2.1.
I did manage to hold "full root" but had to revert a couple of times
by putting stock recovery back and using backdoor .
I accidentally factory reset and everything went a bit pear shaped from there...oops!!
Im still waiting for the OTA ICS - getting network coverage error -one good thing
is my partners tab is only 5 days old and still pure factory,
her tab shows same error so at least we know its not root/backdoor problem
So yeah if u gonna take the OTA best to get rid of the backdoor unless you wanna play guinea pig for us all>>>>
dunno why we aint found one of those yet
I dont think you can cause too much of a problem where a "hard reset" pwr/vol -/rotation lock/ combo wont fix...you can then root from there.

hi 3d0rr!!
i think those of us with the backdoor should be meticulous if/when taking the OTA.
we shouldnt need to unroot and use stock recovery as the ota should get rid of that in the flash. But to ensure a stress free OTA it may pay to do it anyway.
i know you previously told me u were stock gen 1 - but is that from factory, just finished reading a very interesting post regarding the different 'gens' so i for one am sticking with factory build gen :just for the official OTA anyway:

Dibb_nz, I was stock gen 2. I don't wanna take OTA until be sure it's safe. Unless now I know that a hard factory reset may save my tab if something happen.
Can you tell us where did you read that post about 'gens'? I still a little confuse about that

BTW, the network coverage errors seems to be an Acer's error. First I received OTA and a day after that I see that error on my tab. And a couple of hours later I have OTA again. So, don't worry, you should get OTA asap

oh sounds promising, although I just read another post from someone across the ditch in OZ he reckoned acer said they were working on a patch for the problems theyre havin with the first update...who knows
now m8, sorry to confuse you, that wasnt my intention, but i try to make sure that i;m not suggesting things which may end with you or others borkin or brickin yr tab. Ive spent the last few days reading thousands of posts (just like everyone else) thankfully we are fortunate in being able to learn from the mistakes of others I know a bit more about ics than i did 3 days ago let me tell you, lol.
i just finished helpin out a fellow "timmy-ite" stuck with no way of getting in to apx mode to get un-borked...well didnt really help just a sounding board more than anything
he got himself up and running, used the apx tool in my sig, unlocked the bootloader, rooted, flashed custom recovery did a nand and is now running flexreaper - with the tools and knowledge he gained he now has the choice to go back to HC to get the OTA or not....he's one happy camper!!!
Have a read have a read thru the threadhere. ask him a question or two if you want - but dont get too hung up "maybe doing something wrong" you won't be the only person ever to experience that uhh-ohh sinking feeling when you know you shouldnt have just done whatever it was that u just did
Theres always someone round here who will help - usually cos they done the same silly lthings themselves - why ya think i'm always posting
what is the backdoor program you guys talk about?

timmydean's root method also allows you to install a backdoor to re-root after accepting an OTA. You have to manually install it during the rooting process, so you would know if you had it.

timmyDean How to root stock 3.2.1
Summary:
Version V4 is the same as V3 with the only difference being that there is a NEW backdoor script which has some additional features to protect root(#) from getting broken when you do an OTA. I also applied these to this flash image so you wouldn't have to add the additional protection yourself. V4 also has the drivers for XP included. However, when taking an OTA you should also install the backdoor for additional protection. However, you cannot leave the backdoor installed as it turns off sound. So having a little more protection just might save your root in case you take an OTA and forget to install the backdoor.

its a completely stock gen2 rooted and cwm - you can use to unbrick, or go back to stock. only for HC bootloaders though.....

Well my friend, this worked to me... I hope this can help somebody else:
Original ROM: Acer A500 3.2.1 COM_GEN2 Rooted and with CWM using Timmy's method.
1) Go to play market and install Acer Recovery Installer.
2) Open Acer Recovery and verify with recovery do you have. In my case it was CWM recovery by thor2002ro 1.5
3) Install stock recovery. Make a backup of your old recovery when ask.
4) Factory reset: in my case, I made a backup of all my data and used Titanium to backup some apps. Then I harded reset my tab by turning it off and the combo pwd + vol(+) then lock-unlock switch 3 times until I saw "eraing user data" in the top-left corner.
5) turn on the tab and go to google play. Search for acer and install Update enhancement.
6) Go to settings-> about-> system update and aply the OTA update.
You will lost root, but everything should work fine.
To gain root access again, you can follow this thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546593
Now I have rooted stock ICS and I'm so happy
Hey great write up, will try this as soon as I'm off work. Anyway to confirm stock recovery is installed? Because I have done what you said(just the flash stock recovery part) an when I boot into recovery I just get a triangle an exclamation point. Not sure if thats right or not. But I will definitely give this a go since you were running exactly what I'm running now.

yay for 3d0rr you finally took the plunge congrats!!!!!
@tu3218
That download link is no longer available
instead download blackthund3r's one-click-root,
google "ICS Root for Windows"
At step 3 - After you have backed up -
Copy the uid.txt file from the backup folder - this holds your cpu id -
you're probably gonna need it at sum stage
I followed your instructions and it went perfect!!! Rocking ics now. Thanks for the help. First thing I notice, soooo much faster an full of butter.
