http://phandroid.com/2011/10/04/leak-is-this-the-nexus-prime/
I know you’ve seen that thread title before. We’ve posed the question for at least two different renders now but later found those to be fake. So here it is again – is this the Nexus Prime As you can tell, it has a 720p HD display (it’s more like 1180×720, but who’s keeping score?) and has software buttons on the bottom, an optional feature in Ice Cream Sandwich for OEMs who don’t want to include hardware navigation buttons on their devices. DPI also sits at a cool 320 and unfortunately sources are hearing this may be a 4.3 inch device.
The Nexus Prime is rumored to be the first Ice Cream Sandwich device and will reportedly have a 4.5 inch – 5 inch display with the resolution mentioned above as well as a dual-core processor (we’re betting on the TI OMAP4 variety but wouldn’t be surprised – or mad – to see Exynos inside). We are awfully close to Samsung and Google’s October 11th event in San Diego so hopefully more of these leaks trickle out leading up to that. [GSMArena]

4.3" seems to be a typo that people are slowly correcting (first person to post this was GSMArena, they had it at 4.3" in the article, but 4.6" in the title, and it has since changed) Also, further speculation shows that the on screen buttons make up for the rest of the pixels (so it truly is 720p) . I believe it is real, and can't wait for it
Its basically 4.3" if you don't count the onscreen buttons as apart of the screen, 4.6" with.
Seems a little odd the button area is deep black and the background above is "greyish" The whole beauty of an AMOLED screen is the black should be pure black. When you look through the menus on the vibrant the text sits on a very deep black background. something is not right with this leaked picture

Well, If you take a closer look at the area below the buttons area. The area below buttons are in DEEPER BLACK.
Hence, this could be photoshop product ????

I have been considering a mostly black wallpaper in order to save power on my tab. After reading this post i want to look into the actual benefits of saving a small percentage of juice under my conditions (sometimes i just sit around flickincking between homescreens like an idiot)...
Theres a great chart at that post from ars technica:

Im gessing there is no benefit for the tabs display but what the hell?
Maybe its worth giving this a little test. What do you suggest? two 10 minute runs on 100% brightness, one pure black one pure white? maybe a gray as well?
SGT as opposed to SGS is not equipped with any type of OLED screen but regular LCD. Therefore black would be very power consuming color.

So you would think - but judging by the chart the difference in power consumption is minuscule!
My fault. LCD almost careless about this today. Perhaps I had plasma on my mind.
bump - still interesting

Only when compared to an OLED screen!
With a regular LCD, it won't make a blind bit of difference because it's the backlight which is draining the power and it's always on anyway when the screen is on, regardless of what is actually being displayed.

Dave
EDIT - just realized this thread is 20 days old and so I shouldn't have bothered posting!
Bump - i for got how interesting that image in the first post is
Bump - may still be interesting for many people!
Interesting for many people that have an OLED screen...Galaxy Tab does not have OLED. This scientific american article (from 2007) claims that white saves more energy on most LCD displays.
It depends on the 'rest state' of the LCD that is in the Galaxy Tab which would be more efficient, white or black, and according to other tests that i have seen the savings would be negligible compared to the cost of backlight operation.
Want to save battery on your Tab?
1. Dim your display.
2. Turn off unnecessary comms, 3g/wifi/gps.
3. Turn off haptic feedback.
4. Use less apps that run in the background.
5. Use longer intervals for apps that auto-refresh.
The list goes on and on, and in the end only 2 or 3 things are really going to make a difference for each person. If you sit and stare at your background all the time, then making it white or black probably will save you battery because you will not be staring at it any more.

According to the original research illustrated in the header picture, there is little to no difference between light colors...
This is indeed interesting... Thanks for sharing!
So, one of the big reasons that I waited for the S3 instead of upgrading to the Galaxy Note, was because of widespread reports of "crushed blacks" on the Note's display (see this thread).
Crushed blacks is where instead of seeing an even progression in brightness from absolute inky black to the next darkest series of grays, you'll see black and then a stark jump in brightness to the next darkest gray. This defect makes watching movies and other media with lots of dark scenes a problem because it's hard to ignore the high contrasty / blotchy areas.
I'd appreciate it if someone could verify that this is a non-issue on the S3 by using the test image I've attached below. Download it, and view it fullscreen in a dark room. An actual photo of your screen would be nice too. TIA.
EDIT: Thanks all! Glad this isn't a problem on the S3 (and hopefully it won't be on the Galaxy Note 2 either).

I come from a Galaxy Note, too. The problem doesn't exist on the S3.
First thing I did when I got my S3 was that I did the test like on the Note (opened the image in QuickPic with the setting "Force true color decoding on") and went into a pitch dark room. Breathed a sigh of relief.
Here is a good example of what the problem with the Note looked like

I'm happy to report that I had no issue on my screen. Looked great and no crushing at all. I also went ahead and did a dead pixel check and turned out to be 100% :good:

I've read a few posts on XDA which mentions the visible banding in gradients. I find it's visible quite often, in the settings menu, in photos, in apps, videos etc. If this is normal then I'm shocked it hasn't been mentioned in any of the reviews I've. I would only expect to see a screen of this poor quality in a cheap brand.

I have similar banding but not as pronounced probably because my brightness level is lower. I haven't really heard of a N7 that doesn't have this problem to be honest.
Mine has it but I only notice it on dark blank screens and I'm not on dark blank screens very often or for very long.

Seems to be down to a poor quality screen. I guess they had to make sacrifices somewhere to keep the cost down. Thanks for the link toidimaet, I read through it and there currently isn't a fix for stock 4.2.1. I could ask somewhere there if they would mind making one but it sounds like the next official update might also include a fix (if you can call it that) so I might as well wait.
I have the same issue, the only rom which i haven't this problem was PA so that means it isn't a hardware problem? I can't find RadientFix for SmoothRom.
not a screen issue
the N7 has an IPS display panel, which renders colors, well, too accurately. for gradients you can use strong jpeg compression, which is normally not visible on standard screens. the perfect screen also has disadvantages - most mediocre images look awfully.
by the way, all of the wallpapers that are coming out of the box are useless in my opinion for the same reason
im wondering if the display will have pixels on the bottom of the icons like the s3 has, visible single pixels,,that is kind of annoying..i dont like iphones, but the display seems to be more sharp,do you think s4 will be sharp?? no visible pixels?
the 441pixel per inch answers your question

yes,i think its very nice,rich colors,vivid.
Remember, the GS4 has RGB Mode, which makes white's much more natural.
Cant wait til my upgrade!
tx for the answers .
It's so realistic! :cyclops:
It's gonna be an awesome display in every way. People who complain about PenTile don't have any reason to because the ultra high PPI cancels out everything. And if you don't like the default saturated colors, there's always Adobe RGB mode which is apparently better calibrated than HTC One.

Yeah you can still see them but you have to look a lot more closely, you wont notice it at a normal viewing position.

Don't quote me on this, but I recently read an article about calibrating the screen on the Note II. It described activating the Adobe RGB setting for realistic colors, etc, but the article went on to say that carriers removed this menu selection. Do you believe carriers will do the same for the S4?
I could be talking out of my arse, but I just recall this article. I can't locate it.
I know that AT&T GS3 didn't have the same screen mode selections like the International version did. Can't speak for the rest of the carriers though.
Which is why I'm hoping At&t retains this for the S4.

Screen Problem
HI everyone!
I am experiencing the typical LCD property, that it changes colours when pressing it with pressure. I am worried about it because I don't have to press it too hard to make it change colours (Im coming from a Amoled screen). All of this woudn't be a problem, if in some spots, where the screen is the weakest, the whites are brighter, especially noticable when scrolling in the settings. Does anyone experiencing this problem?
Reminds me of a problem I had with my large screened huawei devices, where part of the frame or battery behind the screen would press up against and dent the metal shield behind the LCD, causing a permanent white spot. It was super annoying. I'll have to be extra careful not to let this happen with my idol 3...
