Without root, you'll have no choice but to pay verizon $20 a month for it... even wireless tether apps from market require you to be rooted.
SGT+CM7=:-D
Get rooted. Don't pay more for something you already pay for

I'm not sure if it still works on Gingerbread...but PDAnet may or may not?

Before I installed CM7 I had the tether working on GB, but I had SBFed to froyo, rooted that and then installed a rooted GB, then I installed the TBH tether patch and presto! Working wifi tether... I'm on CM7 now so I have to use open garden from market, which works for me because my devices can connect to ad-hoc networks

Hey guys is this possible without having your droid x rooted?
I am running 2.2 now and I am not rooted.
What are the options? Thanks
What do you mean "free wifi"? You mean wireless tether?

Try PDAnet (in the market)? I know it allows free tether but you cannot get to HTTPS sites...so you wouldn't be able to check your banking or e-mail...but it may give you a limited solution.
Why not just root though and get this without the hassle?
Yeah I'd just root and get wireless tether app. No harm in rooting and it's simple. Never tried what he suggested above but no harm in trying right? good luck
3G Mobile Hotspot - the app that comes with 2.2 build by default, seems to work fine and free. Tested it successfully. I should mention that I'm rooted, but it never asked for superuser, so should work un-rooted as well.

Can you root the Droid X running 2.2? Thanks mate.
You're quite welcome. But im not sure about 2.2 root. I haven't really tried froyo yet or kept up with the thread. Last i heard they were working on a root

Yep, that's my understanding. I'm not sure if it was the same app on 2.1, but it would ask me to subscribe to Verizon paid service when I'd try launching it before. So I just deleted it.
This version works just fine right out of the box, I don't pay for their tethering service.
I think I'd be more positive about this once you get your bill.

The 3G Mobile Hotspot isnt free, when you connect, and load a page it ask you to call customer service for the service...
Weird, sorry for misinformation then. I didn't get any prompts at all. It just started working. I'll have to check my bill then.
I just tried it another day again out of curiosity and thought I'd clarify after my previous confusion. It might help someone...
What happened was that I connected just fine using Verizon default app (hence my previous comments), but when I tried going online in the browser, it brought up a webpage offering to sign up for their tethering service.

This was done on the incredible. What you have to do is chance the dun within the programming settings of the phone.
Haven't figured how to access these settings on the droid x though.

I don't think its gonna work without you rooting it.
You can use the sprint mobile hotspot if you don't want to root or
get the wireless tether, if you do root.
My EVO's rooted and so I am tethering via WiFi.

I went in to the sprint store to have my wifes shift looked at. The phone would not factory reset/update/ or anything that had to do with system changes. The phone was working but I could not root it or put 2.3 from sprint on it. After sprint Bricked my phone they replaced it. It already had the new 2.3 on it and I know I must wait for the devs to make it rootable. But now to my question.
I can not get easytether pro or any other usb tethering app to work. I have used easytether before with no issues and the drives are installed on my computer. Has any one else have this issue with the sprint 2.3? If you have a usb (non root) tethering app working on your phone that has sprints 2.3 on it, can you let me know what app it is?
Thanks

Try PDA Net from the market, you will have to install the app on your phone and d/l and install the PDA Net program on your computer. Should work no problem.Installed on my phone and my wife's.
PdaNet works great on 2.3.3. You do need to download version 3.0 of the PdaNet client for windows.

Does PDAnet add any overhead to the bandwidth? Seems like the only way to tether the phone using gingerbrad. Darn I can't wait for a root of 2.3.3

Not that I've noticed ,when connected to my laptop it is as fast as when connected to the wireless router(maybe just a tick slower but nothin worth sreamin about.)
I'm lucky to see 56K with PDAnet on my comp.

I definitely find PDAnet slower than the wifi tethering I used to have before i screwed up and allowed the OTA to n2.3. Note, the free version of PDAnet blocks all secure sites. If you want secure sites to work, you have to buy the paid ap. Really hope somebody figures out how to root Gingerbread.
No problems here
Running on the OTA 2.3 update for the last month. Pdanet works fine for me. I consistly get download speeds on a tethered PC between 750KB and 1.5MB using 4G. I never use 3G for tethering so I cannot speak to its speed. On WiFi tether (before I got 2.3 update) I only got between 150KB and 200KB.
Is there any good app to get wifi tether on the droid incredible without paying VZW a monthly fee? I installed any cut on a lg thrill and was able to get it working there, but tht doesnt seem to work for the incredible.. Im open to suggestions..

1. This should be in Q&A
2. Before you post, PLEASE use the search. There are many other threads like this
That said, try this. WIFI Tether for Root Users
Open Garden WiFi tether from the market also works nicely.

There's always the option of running a rom that has it preinstalled, such as CommunityRom, which has a hacked default hotspot, or CM7/MIUI, which have their own.
What OS are you on for your PC?

+1 on the WIFI Tether for Root Users as it supports infastructure mode instead of just adhoc.

Running Win7. Was finally able to connect after flashing a fresh CM7 nightly and using built in tethering. Though it took a few minutes to actually get internet access. I would prefer to use wifi tether, but just can't connect to it in infrastructure, only ad-hoc, even after I snagged an AP module from EVO system dump. It seems infrastructure mode on DInc is really hit or miss.

Have you tried PdaNET. That is what I use. It works great for me. I just used it on my trip I just took.
Just moved from an HTC Rezound to the EVO 4G. My Nexus 7 and Rezound are rooted running custom ROM's, the Rezound was S-Off.
New EVO 4G though, I would like to keep close to stock for warranty purposes. All I really need is wifi tether to work so I can give occasional internet access to my tablet. With VZW, I averaged 2-3gb a month max, between the phone and tablet combined. So my data usage is not heavy, but I do need to tether from time to time.
I searched and found several apps for tethering a laptop through a USB cable, but that won't work for the tablet.
So is there a simple and effective wifi tether app that I can sideload to the phone, even if there is a cost for the app? Or do I have to root to get the standard Google Wifi Tether app? If I have to root, I don't think I need S-Off and all sorts of stuff that could cause a warranty issue in the future. Whatever the absolute minimum required to get Wifi Tether will suffice.
Thanks!

I've heard you can tether via bluetooth with FoxFi, but I've never tried it myself. If all you want is to surf the web on your tablet that may be enough for you.
If you try it do let me know how it went.

The latest ota breaks foxfi. I think that root is my only option. What's the simplest method? I don't need s-off or custom Roms, just root for tethering.
Here you go. It's the HTCdev method (assuming you're on Hboot 2.18) which will give you an unlocked bootloader and root.

I'm still on 2.2. I had a bad experience rooting the first time, so I've been hesitant to flash a newer ROM. At some point I'll work up the courage and flash a 2.3 ROM. So the long and the short of it is: I won't be of much help. But look around the forum. Plenty of folks can help you.
