So I want to access my pc files from the tab using es file explorer. I set up file sharing on my pc so now i can see the files but when i try to open the folders i get a message telling me it can't be opened. Can anyone give me a basic run down of what I need to do to getthis to work. And is it easy to access my files from any pc, say can my neighbor get into my files with his laptop if he knows what he's doing?
I'm still on xp on my pc. As far as I know I have no password on the pc. The only account I have is admin and when I installed my tiny xp I don't think i set up any passwords.
So either this is a complete dumbass question or something else.

Use File Manager HD, it's much better for accessing files on network. choose Lan Connection from the menu, select create, input ip, usename and password. i use it everyday to transfer files.

Gave it a go but won't allow me to connect. Says connection unavailable. Got my ip from an ip checking site put in my wireless router username and password (correct?) But still no joy. Should i be doing something else?
Try putting the stuff that you want to share in the public folder on your pc.
On my Windows 7 machine it is in C:\Users\Public. That should do it.
Oh and the public folder should probably be treated as just that. Public. I am behind a nice firewalled router so only the folks on my network can get to them without being a total H4X0R. You can change the permissions on that folder if you really want to lock it down. But I really don't use that feature, so I have no way of knowing the process.

Go to control pan and make a account with a account name and password and admin rights.
Now see what your local IP for your machine is, not your internet IP. Should be something like 192.168.2.something or 1.something.
Now you have your windows log in name and password and your machine IP.
Use your tab software to connect, uncheck anonomous log in so it will ask for user name and password and IP. Also if your router has security turned on you will also née that password.

Have yiu checked permissions on the share. Change them to everyone r/w and see if that fixes it. Also check ntfs permissions

If you dont have any password on your windows account and you dont want to create an new account, try this:
1st. Check your local IP by doing this: win start menu, select run, type "cmd" in the shell type "ipconfig" and you will have something like 192.168.2xx.x
2nd. In Es File Explorer or File Manager HD just enter the IP and log as anonymous
You must have shared folders in windows, to do so, right-click on the folder you want to access, properties, sharing, tick "share this folder on the network" OK
You should be able to access the folder.

did exactly as suggested and worked a treat up to a point. Now I can see the directories but they are empty???
I don't hav any paswords on my xp so didn't need to set up a new account shared the files on the network. Entered ip, got to the folders, music etc, but each is empty.
Sure you are not looking at the public folders and not your local..?
Ok, I dug out an old WinXp lappy that was in the closet and I can see the files. Here's how I did it.
I put what I wanted to share into the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared Documents of the Xp machine.
Then on the tablet I selected the lan tab in ES File explorer. Chose the settings box and selected 'new', and then 'server'. I entered the ip manually.
When it asked for a logon I ticked the 'anonymous' box and logged in. Everything else was blank.
Everything worked.

Right click on the folders you want to share, like music and video or whatever and share them. They should be viewable on your a500 if you get them shared proper. That way you don't have to copy everything you want to share to the public folders. But public is better than no shares.

Tried that Shaun but it doesn't work. Can see the folders but they are empty when viewed from tab. No big deal anyway just wanted to put my sons stuff there so he could watch it on the tab when his mum and dad need some downtime.

You want your PCs Internal IP Address, not the external one for your Router (any PC you use to check that site will return the external IP of the router)
Click Start, then click Run. type "CMD" into the box. a command window will open. now type "IPCONFIG" look at the one for Local Area Connection. the IP address there is the one you want. BTW you need to do this on the PC that you want to get files from.
Of course if you want to get to the files from anywhere in the world then you do need your external and some open ports.
Another thing to note. XP started a trend in that Passwords are required to share things across a network that are manually shared.

I am trying to access my LAN shares from the Hermes.
My hermes has IP address 192.168.254.9 and my server has 192.168.254.3
So on my Hermes file manager (Total commander) I try to reach
\\192.168.254.3\d$
But it can't reach this.
What do I need to do on Hermes and/or server PC ?
Doesn't seem to work when using Active Sync but needs a WiFi connection.
I set up a VPN connection and whenever I try to access a network share it automatically starts up and I can browse the network. I just use the inbuilt file browser.
Actually it kinda works without the VPN but acts a bit strange... will go down the file structure but not up??
Doesnt work for me using active sync over bluetooth with resco file explorer at all.
Active sync gives you an ip address but if i remember its in the wrong subnet completely.
Using wifi and it works perfectly.

Isn't this a default share windows sets up for its own?
(these default shares are not available for use, I think they are there either for internal use, or to prevent one from sharing the rootfolder)
Could you try sharing a different folder on the PC?
Make a d:\test, and share this folder; there should be a blue hand under the icon of the folder.
It can help to switch off "Simple file sharing" (in Windows Explorer, Tools > Folder Options > View, bottom of the list, uncheck simple file sharing).

it does not matter. I tried both a normal share and hidden shares like d$
Now I captured the traffic between my pocket pc and the server.
if I try to connect by \\192.168.254.3\ my pocket pc tries to resolve name of 192.168.254.3 , but in fact it does not need it.
As it couldn't resolve the name it never tries to connect.

I figured out that the problem occurs because my wifi connection is not connected to "work" but "internet"
if I change it to "work" I can connect to my shares.
But then, what do I lose ?

Don't know - maybe a few apps won't like it. But I've got wifi in internet mode and can still do shares... with a little help from "Pocket Hosts" and "NetUse". Not entirely sure where I got them from... try searching on them ("netuse.cab" on the net use one). Set the name/ip up in pocket hosts and use the name in NetUse. I suspect you could use the name in Resco Explorer or any other app that way.
Maybe I just don't understand the question, I always feel dumb after I speak. I installed An app called "pocket lan" and it just sorted it all out for me. Everything works, it was an older version too.
now there's one strange thing I've encountered...
I can access all the files and folders on my pc via wifi, yet only those that i actually put on sharing. Now when I try to reach the default shares (c$, d$ etc) while logged in as an admin it just doesn't let me to do that ... is there a way to log in as an admin ?
btw I'm using Resco File explorer for that thing - it is quite useful and has never let me down but the admin log in just doesn't work
any ideas ?

Im used to doing file sharing over my network at home (some wireless some wired). Can this be done with my mogul? I just want to be able to watch some vids that are on my desktop or listen to my music. I cant seem to figure this out i tried looking for the phone on the view workgroup computers from my network places on my PC but nothing. I tried putting in my desktops IP on IE,file explorer,total commander but nothing. Is there something that im not remembering? Or can it not be done?
resco file explorer will let you map windows network drives.. works pretty well over wifi...

3. To verify you have a connection, open the admin panel on your wireless router and verify that your Mogul grabbed an IP address. For example, on my wireless router's DHCP table, I can see my Mogul listed as WM_Tony and it grabbed an IP address. Next, from your desktop try to ping your Mogul at that IP address, it should work.
4. Now open your Mogul, goto File Explorer, then Menu, then "Open Path", then "New Path". Type in the name of your desktop using the format \\Desktop_name
5. If your Desktop is password protected, you'll get a popup asking for credentials, enter them now.
6. You should now see any shared network folders that are on your desktop.

just to note, if you use the OEM File Explorer you cant play videos/mp3/etc directly from the share, you have to copy them over

Actually that's a good point. I'm surprised there's no "true" network client for the PPC platform. I also noticed that when my PPC is connected to the network that I can't see it in the network neighborhood, which means it's not supporting NetBIOS broadcasts or dynamic DNS registrations with Active Directory.
I'm going to do some more research on this, I'll report back if I find anything hepful.
I have an old Maxtor Shared Storage II network drive. All PC access via "map network drive" in file explorer. No issues with WinXP, Win7, and Ubuntu.
Been trying to get my Acer A500 connected. Unable. Used ES File explorer, File Manager HD, Add SMB, and lots more. I can't get my acer to see the NAS.
A500 with HC3.2, not rooted.
Most apps say failed to login. Tried anonymous not working. I created an account on the maxtor. Still login failures.
Any thoughts ? Apps that will work ?
Just a guess but try taking browser to its IP address see if it prompt for log on.
Or maybe a FTP program like cute FTP.or something similar.you could share the drive thru your desktop.

I can use the browser to access the admin page which 192.168.0.100. This uses port 80. I tried using the browser to access the public folder. Doesn't work.
When using a port scanner for 0.100, I see port 445 available. It won't allow me to login via tablet. All windows machines work fine.
So ES File Explorer is finding the drive, just failing login?
Also, are you sure it is directly finding the drive on the network by itself, or is it picking it up as a shared drive off of your PC or other computers that have it mapped?
I had a very similar issue with a networked NAS, seemed like no program would see it. The only one I ever got to work is File Expert (free in the market)

I loaded and tried File Expert. Same results. No connections.
Ran, Overlook Fing app, scanned for services. I see port 80, 139, 445, 631, 3689, and 8080.
I can login via browser and manage the Maxtor NAS. Again the address is 192.168.0.100. I named it "maxtor_nas". I believe port 445 is SMB connection. No matter what program\app I use to connect, it fails. Says can't load directory or invalid login\password. I tried the admin and anonymous login, no success.
I'm using a Dlink DIR-655 router. I still can't see the default "public" directory on this Maxtor Shared Storage II, NAS. I've tried entering IP address, Device name, etc. I can't connect.

an update. I ran Ubuntu on one machine. I can mount the network drive. So the router and network setup, maxtor settings appear OK. Something with android connection.

Tried File Expert on both Acer A500 and Nextbook Next8p. Still no connection. I've moved the NAS to the DMZ, no connection. I've added a new account name and password, no connection.
I can "map" network drives from other computers on my network. Both Win and Ubuntu. Android devices can not make the SMB, Port 445, connection.
My Maxtor Shared Storage II has the latest 3.1.28 firmware.
Any Ideas ??

Using an HTC G2 (Desire z) I'm able to connect to SMB share on Ubuntu machine just fine with File Expert. Managing files (edit/delete/copy works great but can't stream video from Samba. Of course WI-FI needs to be on.
update. Tried my kids droidx and droidx2. Both fail to connect with file expert. Tried notebooks from friends. Windows and Linux "map network drive" work fine. There's something wrong with android connecting to port 445.

Most likely you need to change the security settings for the SMB share (I don't know if your nas supports such settings). I have the same issues with a win7 share that I could access with fileexpert until a certain update on the app. Now I can get it working only with file manager hd.

Samba is poorly configured in the OEM firmware for Maxtor Shared Storage II NAS drives, which prevents Android from connecting.
To allow Android to connect, the Samba configuration file (smb.conf) must be modified so that the line "security =" becomes "security = share". Unfortunately this file is overwritten each time the drive is rebooted or setting are modified through web admin.
Here's my workaround:
Install custom firmware
- Can't post links, thanks XDA. Google: "Mod with SSH, Telnet, FTP and Optware (2008-04-24)"
Login to the drive with root permission
- Use putty.exe to SSH to the drive IP address - U:root P:root
Create a correctly configured Samba configuration file
- Change to the configuration file directory: cd /usr/lib
- Make a copy of smb.conf: cp smb.conf smb.conf.OK
- Modify smb.conf.OK: vi smb.conf.OK
- Change the line "security =" to "security = share"
- Save the file: <esc>:x
Copy our new configuration file over the default on each reboot
- Change to the init.d directory: cd /etc/init.d
- Modify rcS: vi rcS
- Add the following line above the final line "exit 0": cp /usr/lib/smb.conf.OK /usr/lib/smb.conf
- Save the file: <esc>:x
Reboot and enjoy!
This works for me, as your network and drive may be configured differently, your mileage may vary.
This may also apply to a similar problem with the Maxtor Central Axis NAS drives.
I did search "File Expert" as well as "SMB" along with several combinations of those words but there were no answers to my question on this forum. How do you connect the Elocity Android device to a PC on the host wifi network using "File Expert"s SMB protocol?
I tried the Geek Software (the app creators) website which was of no help. Other than a couple of youtube videos, there doesn't seem to be much in the way of instructions for this app.
I want to be able to access some video files that reside on my PC with my Elocity Tab over my Wifi network using a shared folder without having to transfer them. From what I've read this is possible using the SMB feature of the File Expert app.
My problem is that when I try to add a new SMB network through the File expert interface, I have very little understanding of what the File Expert app is asking for. The first box asks for "Server Domain(leave empty if N/A)", the 2nd asks for "Server IP Address or computer name" (which is the only box I think I know how to fill out), the 3rd asks for a "Nickname", the 4th asks for "User Name:", and the 5th asks for "Password".
None of my PCs on the wifi network have logon passwords. I would like to be able to access shared folders on 2 different PCs with my tablet, one running xp and the other running W7.
I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

ones you open you have to pres menu, show... tap lan and serch for servers
you should have an activated server in you lan to find it
Thanks for that tip about ES Explorer! It was exactly what I was looking for. After enabling the sharing of the correct folders on my PC, I was able to add it as a server by typing in the PC's IP address. After that the PC appeared in the ES File Explorer's interface. Clicking on the PC(server) showed me all the files in my computer's shared folder and I was able to open pictures, videos, and audio straight from my tablet. Awesome! Thanks again!
Android has an app named "ES File Explorer" that lets you connect to a Windows Homegroup shared folder, and upload or download files. You must have Wi-Fi in your home or office, so the Android can connect to the wireless network. The Android app connects to the shared folder. This process is useful if you lost your USB cable and cannot connect to the local desktop using a cable.
Step 1
Click the "Computer" icon in the Windows "Start" menu. Right-click the folder or drive you want to use to share files with the Android device. Click "Add a network location." A configuration window opens.
Step 2
Click "Next" in the opened window that displays the computer's IP location. Type a username and password for folder access and a name that displays in the list of networks on the Android. Click "Finish" to set up the sharing on Windows.

Ya can even do this through File Explorer HD(which i use) and ASTRO File Explore.
Be careful when "moving" files with ES file explorer... I moved a nandroid backup, from internal to external with ES, and it deleted it instead... Other users have been having issues if you take a look at their support forum - but nothing's fixed yet.
I think it's only large files that it gets confused with.
I've had pretty good luck with it but have only done copies but not moves.

Why is my entire C drive read/write from my android? Ive set all but one folder on the drive as 'not shared.' ....
Also, since while on the topic, does anyone know how to map the android phone in network map. Its not viewable anywhere on the pc as connected.

I've been unlucky too but learned that in android terminology.
MOVE = Cut + paste
COPY = copy + paste
Always copy when using android.

I have enough experience with esfile explorer to know how to add computers to the LAN section... so far its been pretty easy to user the computers username and password. In my case, all my computers have the same username and password. But when I try to add another tablet thats on the network (like my wifes) im able to put in the IP address, but I cant figure out what to put as the username and password. Does anyone know how to obtain a username and password from a tablet device to add to ES File Explorers LAN list? Even for a smart phone? And it wont take anonymous. But I know that we don't have usernames or password with out tablets and phones as far as I know, so im at a loss as to know where to start even looking.
You can install an app like Samba
Samba will let you share files on a network from any android device and gives you the option to add a username and password. There may be other better options out there but I've used this with decent success. It seems to have problems with large files sometimes but I'm not sure if that's an issue on the ESFile end or Samba end.

What Exactly Does It Do???
Hey i've done it, used it... and it's great, It is like my android have 500GB of hard disk space when i'm home..
But questions are there... how does this connect to the pc, it's not a part of homegroup it does not show there, even if my libraries are not at sharing, i can still see them in android, in fact i see them no matter what.. I use my PC log in password and user name to connect this, NOT my homegroup password...
What exactly is this?? anyone who knows... plz explain
Edit: Also that i don't have to install any client on my PC, This is a true wireless connection... But i cannot track it from PC, i can copy anything from pc without my pc knowing it.. SCARY
(BTW i'm using windows 8.1 and Xperia P (LT22i, nypon) running 4.1.2 JB, stock.. phone is rooted and bootloader unlocked)
There are several great file managers that can access Samba shares. I use ES and FolderSync. But I would prefer to manage shares somehow centrally so that they can be used in any app on my android device. Does anybody know such a kind of app that creates system wide usable shares?

What exactly is this?? anyone who knows... plz explain
Edit: Also that i don't have to install any client on my PC, This is a true wireless connection... But i cannot track it from PC, i can copy anything from pc without my pc knowing it.. SCARY
(BTW i'm using windows 8.1 and Xperia P (LT22i, nypon) running 4.1.2 JB, stock.. phone is rooted and bootloader unlocked)

I've noticed this using fx explorer too. I can log in to my home pc wirelessly using the same username and password and can see a C$ folder (which is my entire pc harddisk) and even though it's not shared at all or on any home group i can access it with my phone!!
Very worrying.
username and password
I cannot get pass the step to add an username and password. Is the password the one I obtained from my homegroup set up? Where do I obtain the username?
