I can't update to 3.2. - Acer Iconia A500

Everytime I try to update I get the exclamation mark. Please help.

I would redownload and try again.

I've tried that 4 times. I even did a factory reset and it still doesn't work.

Do a factory rest of ur device (its in the system setting under privacy> Factory Data reset) then run the update.
If that doesnt work, download the OTA package from anyone who has it and put the install.zip file on a empty micro sd card. Insert it and turn the device on while holding down the vol - button.
The device should update and run.
Preferably, if you already have ur device rooted, i would recommend that u download a 3.2 ROM from one of the devs here and use in association with the Acer Recover tool (available from the market place for free) and you won't lose root.
Download A500 specific ROMs here (the stock rom is also listed, but if you do use it, you will lose ALL root access, so make your choice wisely.)
The new acer bootloader for the 3.2 updater still has not been cracked. God speed to those trying.

I have done 2 factory data resets and it still does not work. Can anyone please help?

Assuming you're fully stock and not rooted, take your SD card out.

I just tried it without the sd card in and it didn't work. I am fully stock because I did the factory data reset unless there is other steps to being fully stock. I have used custom roms before.

Maybe you still have cwm installed? If you used another custom roms, mostly sure you still have a modified recovery loader (CWM) uninstalling the Acer Recovery Installer is not enough, you need to restore the stock recovery loader.
Or if you still have cwm recovery, you can try my US 3.2 rooted stock ROM at:

He meant the update.zip not install.zip

Honestly, you should consider just doing this. It is ezterry's stock 3.2 prerooted. I opted to do that instead of messing with the ota just yesterday. Like butter man, like butter. Everything is nice and stock, all of my stuff is still right where I left it. Not to mention it is still rooted.

Thank you everone for you answers but Keninash solved my problem. I forgot to restore the stock recovery loader.

[Q] EVO Rom/Root problems

I am having some serious issues with my evo. I have tried 10 different methods, googled 100 different help guides and still no fix.
I had originally rooted my phone using simple root and put the "fixed" froyo rom on there. Everything worked fine, but I was outdated and having some really slow issues so I wanted to try a new rom...Fresh.
Well I tried a few methods, but I somehow reverted my evo back to a nonroot of the original OS. Whenever i go into hboot, my recovery does not work. I push the PC36img and load it, then restart then I attempt to go to my recovery where it gives me the error picture with the yellow/red triangle. I then select recovery (after pressing UP volume and powerbutton) and try to load update from sd card. Everytime I do that I get a Failed error.
I've tried to reroot using several methods off this website, I've done everything I can to get it working but can't. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
Try reflashing your recovery image.
BTW I have hboot 79.0 with S-ON, so it looks like I def became unrooted.

Not sure how it would have just unrooted itself. I would run an RUU from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884060
Then, I would re-root and start clean again.

I pulled up this list of recovery files, is there a particular one I should use?

Ok I downloaded the top item:
RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed
Ran the exe, surprisingly picked up my phone and started the image update. My phone restarted and it forced closed the app on my computer. Now I have a new HTC logo for about 5 min on my phone not doing anything. Should I wait it out or restart my phone?

I would have waited about ten minutes then restarted the phone. If the phone is stuck at the HTC logo, then I would go ahead and re-run the RUU.
Let me know how it turns out.

ok, finally got it working. Had to restart the phone manually and try it on a different computer. It updated it to the newer version of android and hboot, thank goodness! That was the easiest and most productive thing I've been able to do so far, thanks!
Well now I try to boot into recovery and get the same error:
can't open /cache/recovery/command
Then I get :
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted
When i try to load update from sdcard

Ok, so, I think you said you got the RUU working which would have completely restored the phone to unrooted and stock from factory.
Now, you need to re-root your phone using one of the methods on xda. I used the manual method here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045. However, many people have had success with the one-click methods.
After you re-root (which will likely included installing a recovery), select a rom you want to try, boot to recovery, wipe and flash it. A great starter ROM is MikFroyo 4.6 or 4.5.
Try downloading the PC36IMG.zip from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
put that on the root of your SD card, then boot into HBOOT and it should find that PC36IMG.zip after a few seconds and ask if you want to flash it. Choose yes and let it finish. Should then be able to reboot into recovery.
ok thanks, i'll try it when I get back home

Ok, I tried this method...the filesize of pc36img.zip is only 3.5mb, but it didn't seem to work. It scanned the file then just went back to the hboot screen with my options never asking to flash.
I'm going to try to reroot using the other method now...
So I clicked the link and he forwarded to the autoroot.bat page so I used his method. It worked well (the 2nd time around) all the way until it started to push amon_ra_1.8-mod.... then after that it says rebooting into the bootloader, and it reboots into it and just says waiting for phone...
It does appear that my phone is rooted now, but my recovery is still not working. If I use ROM manager will it work since my phone is rooted or do I need to have a rooted ROM to run it off of?

Does your phone show s-off while in the bootloader? If so you should be able to run the FlashZip script and use that to flash the pc36img-sprintlovers zip. That one contains everything needed to bring your phone up to date and will leave you with a rooted rom and recovery.

FINALLY! Thanks a million! My recovery is now working and it installed the built in sprinter lovers rom, I guess the anti-virus was stopping it so I disabled it and ran the flash script. I was able to install Fresh on there, just to try it out. I do have a few questions though:
1. I noticed after going through many pages that to update to a newer ROM version you don't always have to wipe clean, you can just install (or flash) the new update? I noticed in Fresh there is a built in app that does that. Is this true for most ROMS or only certain ones?
2. I assume I am using the RA recovery. I noticed the backup/restore feature on there. What exactly does that backup and when should I use it?
3. I've noticed I've been very low with memory on my phone (not SD card), I have about 258MB free. How can I clear space and when I mount my phone what files are important to keep and can I get rid of, is it okay to get rid of my rom.zip's and radio.zip's?
Thanks again to everyone, autoroot was def the most painless root ever.

1) You'll want to always wipe your cache/dalvik (I do everytime I'm in the recovery) but the Data depends on the ROM. Usually if you are going from one sense rom to another you are ok and the same for AOSP to AOSP. Going from Sense to AOSP you'll need to wipe data though.
2) Autoroot comes with a modified version of AmonRA, they are mostly just speed tweaks. To make a complete backup of your ROM select Boot (kernel), System (ROM), Data (Apps & Settings) and .android (apps on SD card)
3) You can delete the zips from your sd card if you don't need them but that's about normal for free memory.

Need my A500 set back to factory

My A500 is running Taboonay 2.2 with 2.6.36.3HoneyVillain-3.4+ kernel and Thors CWM. I need to return this to acer for repair. How do I go ahead making this thing stock as it came from the factory with no root and no CWM?
I have read all I can find on reverting this back to stock but I see many different ideas on doing it. Some are restoring to stock with root. Some don't have root but still have CWM installed. Can CWM be removed? I need this back to 3.1 stock and unrooted.
I have flashed many Android phones but while this is similar, I am just missing something.
What files would I need to do this?
What are the steps?
I hate feeling like a noob.
If I have been reading correctly, will downloading the CWM-ROM_A500_701414_GEN1.zip file from this thread. work to revert back to stock? Do I only use this file if I don't want root? Or do I need root since I would have to run Acer Recovery to replace CWM with the stock recovery?
Not real sure if that's all I'd need or not?
i would try a rooted stock rom. Download acer recovery from the market and iconiaroot from the dev forum (if youre rooted you know about these). Flash the rom, install stock acer recovery with acer recovery app, and unroot with iconiaroot. This should have you at 100% stock since you can find a stock rom only altered to have root quite easily in the dev forum.
If you have CWM loaded then just download the correct update.zip for your region and install it from your SD Card.
TD
Thanks for the answers. How would I go about reformatting the internal sd as well? At which point can I do that without screwing anything up?
I'm assuming a hard reset after I get everything back to stock would suffice?

Manually delete with explorer app.

2. Do a full wipe and format of data (to get a clean fresh install of rom)
3. Flash Rom

5. After you get it back, revert back to 3.01 or TimmyDeans way back to Root)
ROM : HC v3.2 (GEN2 = USA) (STOCK OTA non rooted, locked new bootloader kills CWM recovery) http://vache-android.com/files/Acer_A500_7.006.01_COM_GEN2.zip
Optional : there will be 2 small OTA updates (8 MB each) that will get you up to HC v3.2.1 (it will be 7.014.02_COM_GEN2).
What are you sending it in to repair for? In my experience, a broken power button, a revert back to stock was unnecessary. My tablet had cwm and Thor's rom loaded, they fixed it free of charge but had loaded stock 3.2.1 on it.

Hey, thanks all for the answers. I got it back to stock. I am sending it in because after two months a line of dead pixels appeared across the screen. I wanted it back to stock just because I didn't want to chance them calling me up and telling me that the warranty was void since I rooted the tablet. It is a possibility. I don't mind if they update it to 3.2.1 though as it can be downgraded. I jsut wanted no problems with the free fix.

Here's what happen when i send mine for repair.. My rear camera got broken because of the shor fall im running on a custom rom and im rooted.. i call them to send my tab for repair then i just revert/restore my stock rom backup but without unrooting it and returning the original acer bootloader.. to my knowledge that i just read somwhere in the forums that they will just update it to the latest version which is 3.2 and it will remove the root and revert to acer stock 3.2
As i wait my tab to be returned and that day has finally come, i boot up my tab and when i was looking to test my camera the SuperUser app is still there look in to the settings and i was surprised that they didn't update my tab (still on stock 3.1) test the camera at it was much better it way different than the previous to my experience. Much faster and no lag when you move it to one place to another in a fast motion.. then shut down my device to test if i still have thor's bootloader and it is still there..

[Q] Acer A500 won't move past splash screen

Something got messed up when I tried to flash my acer a500 from a rooted version of 3.1. One problem I have (and I admit it was my fault) is I did not move my backed up ROM to my external card - so I don't have anything to restore.
My device will boot to CWM (v5, rev 1.3.4), I've tried loading several different ROMs just to flash something on there to get my device back to square one.
I got in this predicament because I had regular OTA 3.2 and couldn't root. I downgraded to 3.1 (buggy and endless FC), but I was able to run gingerbreak for rooting, do a backup (titanium) and my impression at that point was I could flash a custom mod through CWM.
Nothing is working. I have formatted the sd card in CWM and tried ROMs like Thor 14.2, Tabooney 3.0 and several 3.1/3.2 Acer stock ROMs. After wiping data/factory, wipe cache, wipe Dalvik and Battery Stats and then trying to load a zip file from /sdcard it either tells me the installation fails (which most believe is a bad dl), or (in the case of CWM_ROM_A500_701414_GEN1.zip), the install actually goes through - Finding update...opening update...Installing update... - but whenever I reboot after a *successful* install my device just hangs at the Acer logo/splash screen forever.
I've tried resetting the device (power/ + vol /lock on/off/on/off) and it hangs for a long time Erasing Cache.
I'm overwhelmed. I just want to get a stock ROM on that will install successfully so I can have a functional machine back. Can someone tell me if I'm doing something wrong or what I can do here? Thanks
Never mind
I used a different SD card and that did the trick

[Q] Bootloader Ics v3.14.8 + Recovery Twrp v2.1.3, after you hit install?

Hey all! I've been lurking around XDA for years for various devices. I'm good with computers but newer to Android/Linux. And I don't have much of a programming background. I have done some installing of custom ROMS on a phone of mine and even dabbling in a kitchen some. So it's not totally foreign to me.
I've been reading about custom ROMS on and off for a few months thinking about installing a custom ROM. And then actually reading and researching it the last day or two. Since we're not going to get Jelly Bean I decided finally to update to a custom Jelly Bean ROM. I am finding all the information very unorganized and very spread out. And not very comprehensive. Which is making it hard to get a good grasp of everything. Things like what SKBs are and APX mode. And exactly what processes you need to take to install which ROMS. If you need to install a kernel or it does it automatically ect. Very confusing! I thought I had figured out enough to do it.
On my A500 I had the latest Acer ICS OTA update but rooted. I want to install the CM10 Jellytime ROM. I did a factory reset. Using AfterOTA v1.09 I installed first "Bootloader Ics v3.14.8+Thor v1.7.3". Then after that I changed to "Bootloader Ics v3.14.8+Recovery Twrp v2.1.3. It seemed to work fine. I got into the bootloader. I have the Jellytime ZIP file on my external SD card. The first time I think I just clicked install, picked the ZIP and did the swipe to install. Which brings me to my big question. What is it supposed to do after that? It just went back to the Recovery boot animation and back into the recovery without seemingly doing anything. If I rebooted holding the Vol-, it would just go into Recovery and not flash anything. If I just let it boot it would boot the factory ROM. The Thor recovery did something similar.
I then did the wiping/formatting of all of the cache, factory resets and system. And when I tried to install it again basically the same results. Except now it won't boot into the factory ROM since I wiped the system. Which will also not let it connect over USB and to the AfterOTA. If I turn it on holding the Vol+ and get the boot menu and pick the fastboot it tries to do the fastboot but just hangs on the Fastboot notification.
I've been searching and reading but can't figure out if I didn't do something I should have or missed a step. Any help would be appreciated.
Ah! I figured it out! I didn't realize that even though you're using a custom recovery program that you still have to name the ROM file "update.zip". I thought that might be the case but couldn't connect the tablet to the computer via USB and didn't have an SD adapter to connect the card to the computer and change the name. I ended up getting a card adapter. After I changed the name it worked.

Few issues since rooting

Hi,
I have now rooted my phone and seemed to have removed the issue I was encountering. (IMS Framework)
However I have a few issues since rooting and am a bit unsure if what to do next
Any help to the following points is greatly appreciated. I am complete noob so only plain English and links to idiots guides please!
1) as a recent post states, I am also suffering from frequent restarts. They are quick restarts, only a few seconds (not like a hard reset etc) however there seems to be no specific reason or app causing it.
Posts suggest removing Knox might help?
I have a few root removal apps installed now so can someone tell me which Knox apps/programs can be safely removed???
2) when I press side button to unlock the phone, the screen sometimes freezes and doesn't respond. I have to press lock button again to lock, again to unlock then it works again
Not a major problem but annoying none the less
Any ideas??
3) I rooted to save battery by deleting the vodafone virus IMS framework however battery is still not as it good as it was before IMS framework. It doesn't drain within a few hours but again it's annoying.
Android system and OS are currently using more battery than the screen
So being a noob I'm. It sure where to go from here....
I've done a backup from nandroid manager app (in a cwm format it seems) and downloaded rom manager however CWM installer hasn't worked (something on the install guide says something about Samsung devices needing to install something but I can't find a guide on it)
(Please also confirm, the back up I did to external sd card has a few files including an md5 file, a few tar files and recovery img file. Is this correct? Is this the folder I would use to restore if I encounter issues later on??)
So I'm thinking I unroot and reinstall factory settings through kies etc (guide how to do this would be useful??!!)
Then root again and install a new rom (a nice clean one without the bloatware etc)
EDIT. IVE READ HOW TO INSTALL CWM FROM ODIN SO WILL TRY THAT.
QUESTION THEN BECOMES : WILL INSTALLING A CUSTOM ROM FIX POINTS 1,2 and 3????
Am I overthinking this or is there a quicker fix to my issues above?
Any help appreciated!!
1. If you have a custom recovery then flash knox removal script. Then you don't have to delete it manually. For example > http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/general/scriptknoxout-complete-brutal-knox-t2807172
2. Could be related to point 1.
Flash the script and it should solve most of your problems.
For your last question. There is no point in unrooting and using Kies if you want a custom rom. A custom rom will fix point 1, 2 and 3.

Annoyingly Odin didn't recognise phone but that's ill sort that out another time
