Security Vulnerability in Sense ROMs - EVO Shift 4G General

Read this.
It appears that HTC’s logging application Htcloggers.apk in a Sense ROM leaves phones open to have a ton of data extracted by malicious applications. The recommendation is to remove it.

Yeah, I saw this somewhere else online. I wonder if any of the sense rom devs noticed it?

I see that this was posted earlier by VICODAN. Sorry for the dup thread.
I did find the Htcloggers.apk present in the Synergy ROM. It started FC'ing after a while. Rebooted (wiped cache and Dalvik just to be safe). So far, so good.
Yeah; and I know some ROMs don't have the file. Comes down to a matter of personal choice. Just sayin'...

Latepass dude.

I'm running MIK 1.6 and I did look for the Htcloggers.apk on system/app and nothing.. I wonder if I should look for it in another directory or MIK 1.6 is free of that crap.
Any clues?

I converted from Fresh 1.1 to Gumbo 1.5c.. I'm in love.

It's fantastic. It's snappy as all hell. Installed the Full Gumbo 1.5c w/ Sense UI and Sprint apps. Started from a fresh RUU, removed Sprint crapware, pushed voicesearch and mobiledefense in to /system/app, added transparent lockscreen. That's it, it's exactly how I like it. I likethat ghbil leaves all customizations up to me, please don't ever pre-package.
probably my fault...
It's probably no fault of Fresh but I would get non-stop force close errors upon boot every week or so and would have to flash back to old Nandroid backups. I knew it was about to F* up when Sense UI would randomly restart, taking minutes away from valuable android play-time! New Nandroid backups would corrupt (or something) and not do a thing for me, FC errors would be worse, Sense wouldn't start. it was getting annoying, to say the least.
Question: My install is absolute perfection right now, very stable--Can I just update my RA to 1.5.2? Do I need to be aware of anything when doing this? All my problems with Fresh 1.1 seemed to start when I updated the RA to 1.5.2...
Fresh, i still like your rom, i even donated.
How does it compare in speed to the 1.6 AOSP rom? I've been using that one for a while despite it's issues, its amazingling fast, plus 1.6 support.

Speaking of the itchen.. Why is it that the kitchen will not remove apps i tell it to remove. It says it's successfully removed them, my phone reboots but then their still there. Do i have to remount the /system as read/write?
Anyway I just do it manually, i don't need the kitchen for that.
How does 1.5c full with setcpu compare to running fresh 1.1 with the gumbo kernal and setcpu? I currently am running the latter. I am a fan of both flipz and gbhil and think they both do spectacular work. I really just don't feel like going through a wipe, flash, and then restoring everything from backups if there is not much difference other then appearance.

I have used both and think they are very comparable. IMHO the kernal change makes all the difference. Between the roms the difference is pretty small as long as you have the gumbo kernal on fresh. I changed to the Gumbo ROM mainly so I didn't have sense at all. I tried disabling it on Fresh and was so happy with it gone I wanted it completely gone. I know you can remove it manually but I am to stupid for that, the Gumbo ROM without it was right up my ally.
Who cares??? They are both great, no need to decide which one is greater.. just let them be.... its a matter of taste.

JIT enabled Dalvik, yall see this?

Hey all,
I was looking through the Hero GSM forums and I saw this from the G1 forums:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=637419
Apparently it JIT enables you Dalvik VM, if I understand them correctly. I'm on Darchstar's AOSP 2.1 so I tried it. My results are below:
MFlops (tested using Linpack from the Market):
Before - 2.19
After - 3.48
Seems interesting I suppose.
if you check the Darchstar 2.1 thread you will see that most of us are running JIT now. I experienced a huge amount of increased performance, (tested with CaffeineMark from market)
I recommend this to anyone.
I tried this on Flipz 2.1, and basically it made my phone lock up when sliding down the unlock screen at boot.
I had every command execute successfully except I couldn't "unmount /system"
Any ideas as to what I might have done wrong?
Also, can this be done for ANY rom, or just the 2.1 roms?
Has anyone got this going on a 2.0 ROM? I'm still running darchstar's 2.0.1 ROM but wouldn't mind enabling JIT if it's doable.
I hadn't seen the instructions on the first post, these are the ones I followed and couldn't get to work...but others did, and I DO know that most on darchstar's rom have it up and running. I tried on flipz 2.1 and had issues, but it could have been just me I DID do one line at a time, and also had to do an ADB remount in there too.

I followed these instructions and it worked great on AOSP 2.1. I haven't tried it on flipz 2.1 though. Basically, all that is needed is the libdvm.so file and a line added to the build.prop file.

I DID see that it at least requires a hacked 1.6 ROM or any of the 2.1 ROMs

It was in Darchstar's AOSP 2.1 thread and works fine on that ROM. I saw you were trying to enable it on flipz 2.1 without any luck so I thought I'd share the instructions I used for the AOSP 2.1 ROM. I'm curious to know if it works for flipz 2.1 ROM though.

I'll give it a shot tonight when I get home from work. Those instructions that I followed unsuccessfully were assuming you were using FASTTEST, which is where the discovery was first found. Obviously, neither Darchstar or Flipz rom are using that, so I guess I was doomed for failure
I'll report back when I know!

It's "umount /system" and that wouldn't cause the installation to fail. I tried this as well and had the same issue. I'm assuming that this will not work in Flipz 2.1.

Ah, you are correct! I must have read that wrong. Thanks for pointing that out. Also, I didn't think it would cause it to fail, so I'm glad you got the same result. Did you follow the FASTTEST instructions, or the ones mentioned in post 1480 mentioned earlier? I haven't looked closely at those, so I don't know if they differ at all.
Do we think it's because the flipz from is based (portions at least) on 2.0.1 rather than 2.1?
I may be totally wrong on that last part, but was thinking that for some reason.
Ran 15 tests through linpack before installing JIT, average came out to 2.389, installed JIT ran 15 more tests average went up to 3.620, now thats a boost if I've seen one yet.

{ROM}White Widow 4.0b3{ROM}(5-29)~DarchDroid Port~ Beta3 Rereleased!

CLOSED
I'm proud to present a CyanogenMod Rom on the Eris, White Widow, ported from DarchDroid by Darchstar.
Cant shut me down
This is only a beta, and therefore has a few issues to work out. the main one is the boot. As of beta 3, you have to flash it over either a nand backup of 3.1 or the actual flash of 3.1. I am not allowed to distribute 3.1 anymore, so for those of you who didnt get it earlier im sorry, do not flash as it will bootloop your phone. also to those who do have 3.1, DO NOT WIPE! Wiping will also cause a bootloop.
To fix the no service bug, download the attatched zip, and exctact the build.prop to your sdk/tools
run these command to pop it back into place
Code:
adb remount
adb push build.prop /system
then reboot
Beta 3 Rereleased!
Limited Time Release, 4.0 beta3
Stripped down, very limited release. Just wanted to give you a small taste of what I've been working on. This is far from being the final release, but I promised a sneak peek. So far it is functioning and stable.
WORKING FB INTEGRATION
GPS
You must install googleshits to use anything than the other basic functions. Save the file to your SD card, boot to recovery and flash the googleshits .zip file like you would flash anything else. it is an update script.
For those interested in DarchStars new kernel with BrainFuck Scheduler- First Ever Release On Eris! -download and flash the update zip included at the bottom. No wipe needed.
I encourage you to look through the settings for all the new options, things like integrated wired tethering, setting custom messages on your lock screen, and 360 degree rotation are all under there, theres too many new things to post though so take a look and see what you find.
Thanks To
Punk.Koas for his kernel

2. The vast majority of the nightlies have been stable. The RC is obviously going to be stable. Nandroid your CM6. If you don't like CM7 or find issues with it, restore CM6. Simple.
also when gong to a bigger sd card, can i just copy and paste all the files and have them work as before or is there something more i have to do?
thanks for any comments!
Again, will anymore of the 6.1.1 features like all the custom color pretences , eventually be put into the aria cm7 nightlys? Or are we now limited to this theme Chooser?
Feels like I'm hitting my self in the foot switching to cm7 without all of the 6.1.1 awesomeness.

Just make sure your new card is partitioned correctly and yes you can just copy and paste from old to new. When you install cm7 it will change whatever files it needs to automatically.

I wouldn't say that the gapps are optional lmao...because then you'll have 300 people saying "wtf where's my market" k.
also, if they implement it they implement it. if they don't, they don't. if you're not happy with cm7 and are happy with cm6, then stick with cm6.

I tried to look at the Changelog on github, but its beyond my comprehension. Also, does 7 have the ability to install apps on sd built in? I ask some references to problems with apps2sd in the cm7 thread.
Thanks.

Yes a2sd comes built in.
The problems you're reading about in the cm7 thread have to do with the DT a2sd, not the built in a2sd.
EDIT: I would like to point out that DT a2sd works great for me and i prefer it over the built in a2sd as you can move ANY app to sd and still use widgets etc.. Getting it up and running after a factory reset seems to take a couple tries. That is really the only problem people seem to have with it.

Best Rom for EPIC 4G is RandomRom 2.3.4 | Alpha "Hawk" w/EG22 compiled by RamdomKing
UPDATE*********9/11/2011
Sad to say but do too issues with FC'S, ramdon rom hawk 2.3.4 can't no longer hold this title for me. I have tried different fixes none have worked. So for over 2 weeks now I've been testing [ERA][ROM][EH06] Copy & Paste ROM Stock Cyan v1.1 (Updated 9/2) and have not had any FC'S, overall it has been very stable. Occasional reboots do occur but that's a common thing with all gb releases. I hope random can find a way to stabilize the rom. I tried removing gtalk as mentioned but had no success, FC'S were still occurring. O well only 5 days left and the galaxy s2 will be out can't wait. The only down is the fact that it has no keyboard.
Newbie in the posting forum+++
I would like to say that after careful testing Ive come to the conclusion that RandomRom 2.3.4 combined with EG22, is by far the best gingerbread rom for my Epic 4G. I was really excited to see gingerbread roms for the epic 4G, so I tried scrambled eggs but unfortunately it was way to buggy ( Constant Freezes, Hangs etc) and battery life was not up to part. I then cleared the phone and gave RamdomRom a shot and it has proven to be a solid rom. Battery life has been amazing and radios too. GPS is also working really good and quite reliable. I have installed all gmail applications, other stock applications and a few others like the weather toggle, amazon, ebay, plume, pulse, shazam, Facebook and a few games all running great. One of my major concerns was the fact that Im a heavy phone user and allot of other roms would freeze while calls where coming in or at the time of placing a call ( Very frustrating) and that issue so far is non existent.
I must say to anyone interested in this rom to follow the instructions to the T. Watch out from installing unnecessary programs that might take away resources from the system to work at optimum level.
I would like to thank Ramdomking for compiling the best ideas from other great developers into this wonderfull rom. I'm leaving a link to the rom below. Please make sure to follow all instructions carefully and it should all work very smooth, if it doesn't then you may have done it incorrectly or installed a conflicting app. Cheers!

The app is just the client. It certainly does still support exchange. most people prefer other mail apps, such as touchdown, k9, or enhanced email. Just push the email.apk file back in if you want the stock email app back.
can you post link to the stock/default email APK? its not in the provided APK folder, and the 3rd party solutions (e.g. K9) are not passing my companies authentication

running really smooth. i highly suggest you run v6 supercharger 8, 11 after you set it up. but yeah I think they are using the eh06 ext4 kernel.. check out bonsai discussion under general.

I put hawk verson 2 on my phone following the instructions that randomking put on his blog here.
This step takes me back to 2.2.1..... is this correct. Is Hawk a froyo or a gb rom?
Pre-Steps:
Option A: Odin the .tar for EC05 deodexed EXT4.
Option B: Use one-click to root nearly any current setup with EXT4.
Option C: Already on an EXT4 setup? You’re good to go, proceed.
Steps:
A clean install is recommended (Wipe 3X).
Ensure that your phone is on CWM 3.1.0.1 (Purple).
Odin a Gingerbread modem such as EE03, EF02, EG22, or EH06.
Flash RandomROM Alpha “Hawk” v.2.

I followed the steps accordingly and I kept getting forced closed messsages and it wouldnt run the email app without closing it as well. Therefore, I feel like this should be running on gingerbread even though the step told me to put eco5 deodexed ext4 on it and that is where my problem was.
So is Hawk a gingerbread rom. I got a head ache and I apparently need some guidance.
If I did indeed do it right, and I am just suffering problems, can someone please recommend a problem free rom and tell me if it runs on froyo or gingerbread?
Well if the rom installed and is running, you did it right. If you're getting fc's in email, you can try clearing the cache/data.
If you want something totally stable, radomking just updated his ec05 rom (phoenix). Flash that and it should be rock solid and still have all his battery-saving tweaks.

As mentioned, it sounds like your install just suffered some issues. Try clearing data and cache and installing again. If problems persist, try redownloading.
Also, try 2.2.1 Phoenix EC05 for a solid experience.
But to answer your question:
Yes Hawk is a Gingerbread rom. Yes the directions recommend flashing a Froyo rom. No it doesn't matter. I've selected that particular .tar due to its repeated clean success with all of my rom testing of froyo or gingerbread. Flashing a rom through cwm will replace everything but the file system and modem. In essence, that pre-step is only to ensure you're on deodexed EXT4.

When I get FC's after an install its usually because of random crap left over from previous ROM. I notice you're new to XDA. Perhaps you don't know what RandomKing meant by wipe 3x.
While in clockworkmod notice that there is an option labeled "wipe data/factory reset" and under that "clear cache partition". Those should be done 3 times each. I usually alternate between them. I don't believe there's anything magical about 3 times. Just want to make sure they're wiped clean so don't be afraid to do it 4 times if you lose count.
I also go to "advanced" and then choose "Wipe Dalvik Cache". May not be necessary but it doesn't hurt.
If you get FC's, go back and wipe 3x again and flash the ROM again. Don't do any of the options A - C if you reflash.
Good Luck!
Yeah i wiped 3x3, so idk. I mean it worked fine for a day or 2. And then i started gettiing fcs. This happened once where it was going beyond email. I was getting fcs to google framework and phone fcs.
Then I wiped it all and tried to start off fresh while being extra careful as to following the steps because I had a better idea what i was doing. Thank you all for the input and an extra thanks to randomking. I think at this point i am going to put phoenix on there and keep my eyes open for more randomroms to get updated/released.
I've been running Hawk v2 since it came out; I have a great experience running this rom. no force closes (usually those come from restoring data, bad idea) I have had a random reboot here or there, but that is on pretty much any leak. I just reboot my phone in once a day and haven't had a reboot since doing that.
I had a similar experiance. I ran it for 2 days and loved it! The Google frameworks issues. Cleared and reflased again had Google frameworks issues. I really wish someone explained what causes that because I loved the way my phone responded with that rom. I would give it another shot if someone suggested a fix.

It supports it, but I tried everything and still couldn't stop the email from "FC"s. Reflashed, uninstalled the apk, reinstalled, etc, etc... The email would FC every time I checked a new message.
Went back to "HAWK" after 2 days of frustration trying to figure it out...
Well I must say that I have also experienced FC issues with google framework. I experienced those issues when replacing batteries and taking the battery out before the phone was completely off. I'm now testing other rooms since a few people said I should of tried a few more rooms before calling hawk the best. So far from all the other roms, The only one I had great success with has been [ERA][ROM][EH06] Copy & Paste ROM Stock Cyan v1.1 (Updated 9/2).
You can find this rom below. What I can say about this one so far no FC's, this rom is also solid with battery, overall it has been fairly good.

One thing I have noticed is the fact that I can't receive mms, I only get a link to view on sprint website, anyone has any Idea how to get this to work?
Ok I gave Random Rom Hawk a second try. My first attempt worked great for a day and a half then it was Google frameworks error after error...I flashed the rom again and same thing in a day. Went back to a previous rom just depressed because Hawk while it worked was awesome. So I read and read the development strand and decided to give it another shot. This time I flashed the rom also ran the Ram control thread, then flashed the journaling zip, and uninstalled the gtalk/video app that came with the rom. 4 days everything sweet smooth and great! I am using eh06 modem and great signal and GPS locks instantly. No fc at all!!! Great job!
