[Q] 101 uses for a Branded Omnia II? - Omnia II General

I've looked at the threads and can't seem to find an answer. I may be wording it wrong. if i am feel free to give me a dressing down. Having said that, my query may be a bit vague.
i would like to know how to bypass bell internet settings and use omnia II strictly as streaming media player on my home wifi. Whenever i try to access my browser it tries to go through Bell(canadian cell company). I would like to browse the internet through my own WAP.
I have parted ways with bell, but i'm cheap and don't like throwing away phones. If it can be used for anything other than a paper weight, i'm willing to try.

T-Mobile TV UK

Just read that T-Mobile have started offering TV on 3G devices in the UK. Just tested it and it works a treat - it's free until 30th June for 24 hour passes
For some reason, I don't get the link on my Vario II on the homepage but this link works to take you straight to the EPG
http://10.111.189.31/servlet/download?page=download/epg/jsptemplates/onNow.jsp
Enjoy
Smiffy.
I know the link is truncated but if you hold your mouse over it, you should be able to see the full link in your status bar
Smiffy.
Nice one Lord.
Also got the link from t-mob
http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/personal/pages.do/our-services/internet-on-the-move/mobile-tv-costs
Yeah, I had a look at that too but it doesn't mention any of the WM phones and I don't get a link off the w'n'w homepage - it's as if they don't want us to use it
Mine didn't work straight away either - I had to tell the Streaming Media program to connect via the "T-Mobile Internet" connection and it works a treat
I'm running Black 3.5, btw...
Smiffy.
Wow
and the tv hr pass works well. Only works over 3g though not over WIFI.
How did you find this out

This should also work, and is easier to re-type....
Hi,
I have just got the Vario 2 and tried to use the mobile TV. I got as far as clicking on the link and streaming media opened.
All I then got was connecting..... and then no network found.
What did you have to do to get it working?
Thanks in advance.
when the player opens have a look at menu, connection. it could need setting.
web and walk t&c's?
Just had a thought; under the terms and conditions for the basic web and walk, audio and video streaming explicitly banned. Where do those users (like me) stand with this? where did you find the link?
link is on the tmobile home page
the tinyurl link was to make it easier to put the really long link into your hermes if your viewing this from a desktop browser.
As for getting it to work. i had to click the link, agree to 24 hour pass, and then it allowed the links to open. It failed everytime for me, so idid a soft reset and since then its works faultlessly.
Awesome find.. It works perfectly on my cheap as chips pay as you go system.
One thing I'm not sure of is do I still pay for the bandwidth used ?
PAYG has a outrageously expensive £1 limit each day.. yes £1 for all your browsing etc. However its not unlimited.. and they "may" get funkey if you go over 15 meg per day. streaming video will zap this up real fast..
Down pub was streaming music vidz and news,- a nice channels selction available.. (>< Holyoaks channel too.. sigh) followed by a quick google maps to show m8's how nice the hermes is. They were all amazed. I just dont know how much bandwidth it all uses up, thus how much ultimatly it will cost, or if viable.

Reading thier t&c's , It seems that MobileTV is excluded from webnwalk and is a separate product. So you don't need to even subscribe to webnwalk to use Mobiletv.
However, you DO need webnwalk to access the t-mobile webpages related to mobileTV. So if you have a 1 day pass, each day you would need to access the website (and incur webnwalk charges unless they are included in your price plan), plus the mobile tv charge.
I think on other devices (non WM), you can instal an application to handle the charging and playing of TV, thus avoiding need for web page accessing.
Now, i wonder if the MobileTV charge is an 'extra' or whether it is deducted from my FlexT allowance?
cool, something thats works for me 1st time!
the big brother 8 channel is the E4 live footage!
A way to keep her happy down the pub
Well, I managed to get it working once, via GPRS (was downstairs, rubbish 3G reception downstairs).
Subsequently, reconnected on 3G and tried to make it work - making sure the Streaming Media app was set to connect via T Mobile Internet... No dice.
Not been able to make it work since then, I think there must be a problem with their streaming platform somewhere or the way the variables are being passed to the streaming app, because why else would it work once and then never work again? Very annoying.
you are rather fab Lordsmiff, I have spent AGES trying to find that stupid link
Not having to top up....?
Being a bit of a tight a#*e and wanting to give this a go, I was wondering if t-mob give any free credit if you register you SIM or anything like that. I just stuck a new PAYG SIM in and wanted to give it a go but am at work so can't/don't really want to put any credit on it. I know o2 and Voda do...
you do need some credit on your account to sign up for the service via the webpage which is on your phone.
However t-mobs online billing site does work with pay as you go too. so I can check how much I've used etc, and you are not charged for the streaming video bandwidth, which is cool.
One strange thing is I notice listed is a
TMO Network Coupon 2001 QOS1000 - a data link.. saying 21k,
This has been poling every hour for the last day.. I have not been charged for this.. I have no idea what this is. or if it is linked to the tv system... odd.
shame the service has been down since at least 5:45am!
Hi my thoughts (using Tytn Vario II);
- Streaming works well. I hate streaming over 3g but this works well. No breaks in audio or video. The framerate sometimes is low for the video but audio is fine all the time. Again fairly acceptable with current technoloy.
- the electronic program guide could have been better, but i guess they are trying to keep it simple for compatability with less specification mobile devices.
- Not quite 'live' TV (except maybe Big Brother). Seems to be preselected scheduled content. Most programs are small snippets - but that is fine since most mobile TV usage is about wanting to have a quick 5-6 minute view.
Can't wait for the day we can view on our mobiles the exact same content that is being transmitted on normal tv.
- Hopfully more content to appear if this trial is sucessful for T-Mobile.
- Dont really like the built in Streaming Media Player but it does the job ok - anyone know of any 3rd party alternatives out there?
- shame no BBC channels.
Finally,
- would I pay for this service? ....hmmm..maybe - a little more choice in content and so long as once I pay for say monthly access AND dont have to worry about data charges....
PROS:
Reliable and acceptable access compared to similar 'free' alternatives
CONS:
Limited choice of channels
Not enough of 'live' broadcast content

AT&T connection problem

Hello all, I'll get straight to the problem and not waste any more of your time than needed as I know most of you are very busy.
I got a new HTC TyTN II and I am on AT&T in the US. My problem is that when I try to do something that streams audio or video data it will not do it. I connect to the Wi-Fi and it will do it just fine. I can open web pages and do speed tests till I turn blue, but streaming audio and video are out. I must also point out that because I live in Denver there is no 3G, I am on EDGE.
I have already talked with HTC, but they said I need to talk to the provider since the phone can do it via wi-fi. I went to a local AT&T store and said it might be my plan, they changed it from the MediaMax + 200 to the PDA connect package. I have seen no change and this was about 14 hours ago from this post. The rep also changed out my sim card as I had a Cingular 64K smartsim, they upgraded me to a AT&T 3G sim. They were unable to figure it out and suggested I call AT&T tech support (oh joy). I called and the rep I talked to said that its because I'm using an unbranded phone on the edge, when 3G hits denver this problem should go away, he also mentioned that it happens with most of the 3G phones that AT&T sells. For some reason though, this just doesn't sound right. Technically it could be done. A 64kbit audio stream is easily done via a 200kbit data EDGE connection, so I don't see why they wouldn't allow it. Just seems foolish to block these services if this is true. I just have a hard time believing this is the cause.
I have a few programs that do work, and don't work because of the data issue. Youtube mobile works, it uses a program called "Streaming Media", and the file format is .3gp, but when I stream other data, like from Orb in .3gp, it does not work, even in "Streaming Media". I have another program called Resco Radio, it enables me to listen to Shoutcast radio, but it does not work at all on the edge, on wi-fi it works fine. Then I have xstreamxm.com, they allow me to listen to XM on my mobile device using Windows Media Player. This also does not work.
Programs that do work are Windows Live Maps, Google Maps, Youtube Mobile, and internet surfing. Speed tests are coming in from 174-226kbits/sec from dslreports.com.
Knowing what you know now, what do you think the problem could be? I am open to ANY suggestion, so please write back. Thank you in advance for your time.
Sounds like you need to disable the proxy if you're on the $20 MEdia Maxx plan.
Read this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=330171&highlight=streaming
It was a very simple search for me....
I have searched around the phone and I am not able to locate where to disable the proxy. I searched all the connection settings area and all the connections area. hmmm.....
EDIT - I found it, I had to change the settings on MEdiaNet, not My ISP. MEdiaNet settings are harder to get to which is why I missed them. You can't directly get to them from the connections page, you have to get the settings link while its dialing. I seemed to have gotten it fixed (HOORAY FOR ME! lol)
Thanks Flapjack for pointing out that thread, that really helped.

Dodging T-mobile's detection

Hey folks,
First up I know this is against my T'n'C's but we're talking hypothetically here ;-) oh yes and the fact that I was originally sold this contract for connecting my laptop and PSP to the internet even although it's expressly against my T'n'Cs so I don't feel wrong about doing it.
I'm trying to connect my laptop and PSP to the internet via my Vario II (aka Hermes) from t-mobile. Several concerns crop up
1. since i'm not on the pro package I'm not allowed to do this. Ergo t-mobile must not know I'm using a laptop.
How do they detect it?
I suspect VPN on the phone might get round it...although I've had difficulty configuring it.
Would opening a VPN from the laptop after connection decieve t-mobile?
As regards browsing I assume they're just taking the browser information that the laptop's browser gives them. I suppose you can spoof that somehow?
Lastly for the psp I simply want to stream media from my desktop to my psp when I'm on the move using 'pimpstreamer' - I doubt this protocol will be too noticable.
To effect this connection though I'd need to perform the 'wifi AP' hack I've seen talked about on the wiki....
Problem is I can't seem to find Internet Connection Sharing under programs....Is this something that can be tweaked to be invisable under the registry like the GPS module in the settings section?
Thanks again for your help folks!
If you have the unlimited data plan (only $20 a month), simply turn on Internet Sharing via your phone and select "Modem Link" or whatever it's called. Plug in and voila. The PSP, not so sure.
I have a T-Mobile contract also. You shouldnt worry too much. Even if they can detect it, they dont particularly care so long as you dont go over the 1GB fair usage limit. I connect my laptop all the time and have been doing so for the past year and a half. I even went as far as buying a datacard and using that and still no complaints.
Once, I downloaded 4GB of data via my contract when my internet connection at home went down. Not even a peep. Now I only use my phone for basic usage and connect whenever I cant find a free WIFI but I still use it.
In case youre wondering I have Flext 30 with Web n Walk but I only pay 18.75 GBP per month.
Dont worry and enjoy!
There's an awesome program in the development section that actually allows you to turn your hermes into a wifi hotspot. it connects to the internet through the phone's connection, then shares that connection over wifi. It works perfectly for me, although I rarely really need to use it. Very hand; I wish I could remember what it's called. Search "Wifi Sharing" in the development thread and you should find it.

OT: WHAT!? How did you do that! I've got Flext 30 with WnW and I pay 32.50! And that is with a £5 discount!
Its against T-Mobile rules to use Internet Connection Sharing?
I got it because I signed up as a Curry's Employee and got a permanent lifetime discount of 50% off.
Yes it is againt their terms of service but as I said.. really doesnt matter.. just dont do anything that would make you jump out. Dont use more traffic than you should. Dont use it for VOIP and dont stream music/video to/from it.
I know what you are talking about because I also use it on my Hermes. It's called WMWifiRouter.
I do it all the time and I've never gotten in any trouble for it. Then again, T-Mo EDGE is usually too slow for me to want to use it on my laptop anyways.
I just use it when there is no WiFi available --- the edge is a bit slow, but still VERY usable. Never had an issue either.
I'm looking into that WMWifiRouter, looks cool as hell.
Thanks to everyone for their advice!
That program looks amazing...The website is currently down however...
Any chance someone could email a copy of the program to me at
verylastninja at yahoo dot co dot uk ? It sounds like exactly what I'm needing.
Also the cached page from google says I need ICS installed. 'Windows\IntShrui.exe' - I've checked and there's no such executable in my windows folder.
Does anyone know where I can get my hands on this exe? I'm about to try googling but am worried about getting the wrong version
Your sim works in a datacard? that's cool. How much do those things cost? Never even thought of trying it
Lastly I should say I'm running Microsoft Windows Mobile Version 5.0 (OS5.1.195 (build 14955.2.3.0).
I'm very curious how you access via a datacard as well.
Ah.... Sony GC79/GC89 is built for tmobile!
Although I guess you couldn't use your phone if your sim is in the datacard. Any workarounds to use both at the same time with same service plan, he he?
T-Mo charges $49.99 for unlimited internet, wow... but only $19.99 if it's unlimited on a phone, could consider adding a new "phone" to your account with unlimited internet and just pop the sim in the datacard and go.
Suppose there's not really a lot of difference between using your phone as a modem and using a datacard mind you. So unless they're pretty cheap I'd probably be best sticking with the varioII
Anyone know about the ICS bit? I've seen people reffer to it before. (I gave my windows mobile version etc on my earlier post btw) at first I thought it would be like the GPS settings in control pannel - hidden by some registry entry by t-mobile (and I can think why they would want to).
However that file reffered too Windows\IntShrui.exe
also what's AKU3? Sorry for being such a clueless n00b on this but I've got a little bit of a steep learning curve here!
Pretty pretty please?
Ok found ICSinstall.cab on here and installed it, soft reset, and attempted to install the latest version of the WMWifiRouter program (which I finally succeeded in sourcing!).
However I get a message telling me cryptically that it 'cannot be installed' after attempting install. I wonder if this is related to ICS...
I now have the InShrUI.exe file in /windows/ *but* attempting to run it gives:
'The file 'IntShrUI' cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate or one of it's components cannot be found. You might need to reinstall or restore this file.'
I reinstalled it over itself (i.e. ran the cab again) same error.
:-/
Was this the right file? I seem to remember it was dated 11th January 2008??
Thanks again for hte help folks!

Question To SoftBank X Series Users

What is the difference between PC Direct and Access Internet?
What do they refer to please?
What do we have to do to incur charges for these?
This might help:
http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/en/important/20080618_2/index.html
Even if we pay for Unlimited Packet Discount - are there any popular internet apps that we should avoid because of unexpected costs?
(For example YouTube via Coreplayer or something?)
Finally: Are there any financial/packet risks using apps on the phone while it is charging from the USB via the PC?
Much appreciate any advice.

Okay, this is complicated, but I think I have it figured out pretty well.
Unlimited Packet Discount is the flat rate data plan for Softbank. The minimum cost is always 980, but the maximum cost depends on how you use the internet.
If you use a regular Softbank phone (not X-Series) and stay within their "walled garden" of sites that pay Softbank to be in the walled garden then the maximum cost is 4200.
If you use a regular Softbank phone (not X-Series) and don't stay within the walled garden, then the maximum cost is 5985. (This is called PC Site Browser)
If you use an X-Series phone (with the proper AP which comes preinstalled on the stock ROM), then the maximum cost is 9800.
The introduction of the iPhone brought yet ANOTHER flat rate plan into being. It is called Packet Flat-rate Full. It starts at 980 and maxes-out at 5985. Though it is too soon to tell for sure, it seems that this flat rate applies to all phones and all methods of accessing data.
This might help:

If I am reading between the lines correctly, the most prevalent thing that site says is that you shouldn't use your phone as a modem for your PC.

Not that I know about. Except for using it as a modem for your PC, you should be able to do anything you like with it. However, I am sure they will find a way to screw you if they really want to. One caveat:
Make sure you have the flat-rate AP installed if you are not using the stock Softbank ROM. Otherwise you could be using the open, non-capped (and muuuuch more expensive) AP.
Finally: Are there any financial/packet risks using apps on the phone while it is charging from the USB via the PC?

Yes actually, in a way there may be. Many programs update automatically when cradled, assuming that there is a live internet connection available from the PC. If the PC is not connected, or if it is behind a proxy, or if Activestync is being stupid, these automatic updates could default to your cellular connection.
The best way to make sure you aren't risking packets is to go into your commmanager and turn your cellular radio off.
PS, Kudos for putting this in the Networking section where it belongs instead of tacking this on one of the long, already disjointed Softbank-themed discussions in the Hermes and Kaiser sections.
Thanks very much for the effort and attention to your reply.
I'm still not 100% sure what the differences are between PC Direct and Access Int?... (My PC Direct is taken care of by my packet discount but my access internet is over $1000 that I have to pay. Talk about an expensive screw up!)
内訳 アクセスINT@0.2円 525218Pkt (Access Int)
内訳 PCダイレクト@0.08円 60638Pkt (PC Direct)
I assume it isn't too easy to use the phone as my PC modem accidentally?
I'm trying to cover all bases and not make the same mistakes again.
(I'm getting paranoid just plugging the USB cable in to upload a cab file - at least until I figure out my bills with SB staff)
(It is a little confusing just getting this bill when I reverted back to the original rom and default settings on September 1st and paid my $550 SoftBank bill on Friday (2 days ago)
(Thanks for your PM too.)
Hi, I am sorry to hear about your bill...
Maybe you can help us figure out exactly what happened by giving us a list of the Apps you have on your phone, and how frequently you use them. There is a lot of misinformation floating around on the Internet regarding using the X series on Softbank, so by putting as much information as possible on threads like this will go a long way. First off, what device are you using (probably the X01HT with a non-oem ROM)? What AP were you using? And finally, what apps were you using?
I have been using a stock X02HT for several months, first on the Unlimited Packet Discount plan (980-9800), and for the last month, on the new iPhone/X Series plan (5985). I have never had a huge bill yet. I use on a regular bases Hotmail and Gmail (IMAP) access using Pocket Outlook, PIE, ActiveSync OTA, Pocket Weather updates, random applications updates (Resco, etc), and IMPlus. I can safely assume that all of these activities are safe.
Well first of all it's a SoftBank X01T (Toshiba G900) which isn't supported on this forum as far as the phone model is concerned.
However, many of us share quite similar SoftBank billing plans, rates or charges.
At the end of the day - I changed the rom and used the wrong Access Point and password - from what I can tell. (SoftBank - don't even entertain the idea of talking about this stuff). For a couple of months I hardly used the net with the new rom and my bill was small.
Then I bought CorePlayer and decided to test it's built-in YouTube client on a couple of occasions. That's when all of my money was sucked out of my pockets, life and near future.
SoftBank tell you ONE DAY after you reach your first $500. So by the time you find out - you have possibly doubled that.
Like many phones - updates are not offered by SoftBank for this model.
Although I was trying not to be on the defensive - the SoftBank telephone rep already had me shaved and shackled as soon as I mentioned that I changed a few settings on my `Windows PC phone'. I quote "That's what people with Windows do."
I should have reminded them that it's the Mac lovers who are happy to spend a little more.
Anyway - if you need more info - I'll be hanging around Tokyo station with a cup in my hand. (No disrespect to anyone intended).
Cheers.
ps. For the record - I went back to the original rom with default connection settings.
Anyone looking for information about Softbank's flat rate Access Protocol, please refer to the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=441400
Thanks.
Thanks
@ larsuk,
My request is network related so I didn't know if I should post it here or attached to the end of the other Softbank threads...
In any case, thanks to Grant and larsuk for explaining what happened to me when I surfed the web from my PC, using my Nokia with a Vodafone (SB) USIM testing my phone's modem adapter and my 3G connection.
I applied for the SB unlimited data plan in view of a trip around Japan as I wanted to use my Nokia as a PC modem. I tested my phone's modem adapter and my 3G connection by surfing the web from my PC for a couple of days and all went well...
That is until my next SB bill hit me! It was monstrous! Almost 7,000US$!!!
I managed to talk my way out of it with an understanding SB representative who waived almost everything considering my obvious good faith. Japan may totally lack any traces of common sense or practical thinking but I love the genuine kindness and its kind of "paternalistic" approach to laws and regulations: they do let off first time offenders with a warning.
Anyway, thanks for explaining waht happened! Now... I know that this forum doesn't support Symbian but, RayBmade a very handy Softbank cab which seems to work miracles on Windows and Android and I couldn't find anything like it on any Symbian forum. Any chances that that cab may find its way into the Symbian world or any way to modify the APN on a Symbian device?
I have now bought an hTC DHD from Softbank and I wonder how I survived on Symbian for so long but, still, I'm not ready to throw away my N8 (I need 2 phones for 2 numbers).
Thanks...
Tommaso

Tethering on rooted and unrooted Android phones.

Hi.
Firstly I want to put aside all warning about if it is legal or so, focus on technical issue.
I am not new if it comes to networking, that's why I want to expand my knowledge.
Just got new Samsung Galaxy S3 mini, and wanted to try tethering with my sim card.
Got message on web browser in PC and mobile as well:
"Are you using your phone as a modem or personal hotspot?
Reference SIM002
Using your phone as a modem and connecting it to other devices through WiFi or USB to get onto the internet (also called 'tethering'), is not what the plan you're on was designed for. If you would like to speak to someone about tethering options available to you, please call 333 free from your Three phone.
In the meantime if you want to get your phone back to browsing the internet you'll need to turn it off, allow it to reset itself for a few moments, and then turn it on again.
If you're looking for a Mobile Broadband connection, you'll get a better, cheaper and faster experience on one of our Mobile Broadband tariffs or devices. Just go to your nearest 3Store."
I found some threads here on our forum, but no answer how does it work.
As in my phone (Samsung Galaxy S4 Relay) which is rooted it working fine.
Some people say network operator is doing Deep Packet Inspection - maybe, but it looks like rooted device appear for them as not hotspot and not rooted as hotpost.
Am I right? Is rooted phone doing it somehow smarted (e.g. making itself proper router with his DNS point and gate ?)
