Hello hello! Ive been reading up on the forums for about a year now (sorry for the leeching!), but it's my first time posting.
First I'd just like to introduce myself as a proud owner of an xperia play r800i (not yet rooted).
Here are my questions if anyone would be kind enough to answer:
1. Is there a way to show more than 8 apps in the Recent Apps list? (where you long hold the home button). Oh and without the use roms, apps, and other substitutes. Perhaps somewhere in the manifest?
2. Also how does one exclude certain applications and tasks from appearing on the Recent Apps list?
Hopefully I posted this in the right section, couldn't decide between the general section or development section, so apologies if I mis-posted.
You did well. Development section is a section you want to avoid in order to ask questions and so on. Ideally, only people who are bringing something to the table (ROMs, programs, kernels) should start threads there.
That said, there are third party Apps with more recent Apps to show. Launcher Pro allows a swipe function which shows the 16 most recent Apps, but you can't summon them from the Home button easily like the native function.

so you've just gotten a cheap hero on Ebay or finally got an available upgrade on your account. you've probably played around with the hero for a little while, maybe installed a few apps, learned how to use the keyboard and probably snapped a few pictures. you've put a few customizations into the phone, like your ringtone and the city where you want your weather forecast for. you've linked your facebook friends and contacts. you've found a cool new background. and after looking through the market's categories, there aren't too many super-engaging apps to try out.
you've heard about rooting your phone and want to try this out. How do you do this? well you searched the web (good job! search here too ^^ upper right corner!) or posted on yahoo! answers (come on...) and found that forum.XDA-developers.com is ground zero for all things mobile hacking. you've managed to find the cdma hero section and now here you are, confronted with a barrage of topics, mostly about things that might as well be written in martian.
Hi! welcome to the forums. feel free to introduce yourself here and ask ANY questions that you might have (AFTER SEARCH OF COURSE).
Here is a quick glossary for those who are just coming into the hacking scene
ROOT: the act of running commands with FULL administrator access and control. this means you are not held back by software controls from seriously messing things up. With that said, if you read carefully EVERY TIME before you flash updates, you should be just fine
NANDROID: a complete backup of the data on your phone, complete with contacts, messages and all installed apps.
ADB: Command-line tool used to access your phone. Need the Android SDK installed in order to use this tool
ROM: the phone's specific coding, comprised of the following: underlying operating system (framework, kernel, etc), applications for phone and messages and stuff, the bootscreen, the toolbars and launcher, and even more specific things like the font used on the phone and the icons for the apps on your screen.
RECOVERY IMAGE: used to flash updates, run nandroid backups, wipe the phone's internal memory, etc. Accessed by holding the home button (when phone is off) and then tapping the end (power) button. The stock recovery image is a triangle with and exclamation mark in it. In order to flash custom ROMs you must load a new recovery image. Most rooting guides on the forum include instructions on how to do this.
ROSIE.apk: the stock (black) toolbars and general sense UI included with the stock rom.
That's all for now, I'm not running on very much sleep right now so if I made any typos point em out and also come up with more glossary terms to define that you personally wondered about when you first took the plunge of rooting
again. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the new members joining us here in CDMA hero-land. we look forward to the day where you'll know enough to start to teach us things
hi guys,
i hope this is the correct section in the forum. I have a question concerning to an application some friends and me are developing currently. We have class which extends View.
Now, in regular intervals, this View object (which is a subcomponent in an Activity using Relative Layout) has to be refreshed. The refresh itself is done by mView.postInvalidate in a background thread (lets say, every 300ms). The problem we noticed is, that the postInvalidate() as well as the invalidate() (which we could use if the UI Thread would call it) do NOT force a refresh (thus, calling onDraw(canvas)) immediately! Unfortunately, the view is only updated every 1-3rd second..
Does anyone of you have an idea, how to force an android view, to refresh immediately?
Thanks,
Felix
possibly anddev.org might be a better place?
youre right i think, i posted it also there, thanks!

you are placing this inside a specific _device_ development forum. It are mostly ROM builders (and users) you are going to find here.
Place questions about app-developing in the genera Android dev forums here on XDA, that's where all the app builders / hackers are
After about month of using my dinc, I've found that I literally never press the opti trackpad button. Is there any way to make this button act as a dedicated camera launching button (or to set it up to launch a specific app). I've done no customization to my phone thus far (waiting to see how the Froyo OTA plays out before I start hacking), but I have no problem with rooting or installing a custom ROM in order to get this functionality. Does anyone know if this is possible, and if its only available in certain ROMs, which one? I'd love to reclaim this currently useless button.

Most roms I have used use the trackball for the camera. Also this belongs in general. Mods please move.

I apologize if this is in the wrong place. I posted it in general section and the only response was that I should try posting it in the development forum. If you happen to see this again, I'd really appreciate a list of any ROMS you used that you are sure had this functionality.
This should be in development because things will have to be edited in order for it to work... most Roms let you take pics w/ the trackpad but he wants it to be able to open it up from whatever screen he's on by pressing that pointless little button... lets make it less pointless...

This is the misconception that bothers a lot of people on here. While this may require ' development' to get it to work, it is not development in itself, but a question. Therefore, it should be in general.

Exactly what I was going to say, well put.

Qwerty.KL Layout
I was looking at the qwerty.kl file and I see that Key 212 is defined for the camera but the second argument is left blank. Is the second argument the action for the key? Does anyone have any documentation on the layout of this file. Seems simple but I would like to know possibilities?
For the wake on press of the button, key272 DPAD_CENTER was given the action "WAKE".
I hope this is framed in more of a development format.
There should be a prompt that asks people "Are you a developer?" after they click the "new thread" link in the development forum. If you can't answer yes to the question, then your post goes to general.
To address the OP's question however, I tried everything under the sun and couldn't get it to work. Although I was trying to get it to bring up the dialer app with the "CALL" property. I ended up just remapping it to the "search" softkey and it works just fine. I use LauncherPro so I just made the Internet icon in my launcher tray launch voice search on the upswipe from the internet icon so I didn't lose any functionality.
Jeez, you would think people smart enough to develop software would refrain from bumping a thread they feel is in the wrong forum, JUST to declare that the thread is in the wrong forum. Especially when such a declaration has already been made in said thread.
Anyways, I'm sorry if my phrasing was not appropriate for this board. The natural extension of this question is "what development steps can be taken, or what paths should I pursue, to try to realize this goal". To be clear, I am a software dev by education and by trade. I have never developed on a mobile platform, and so I don't have any specifics of android OS development in which to frame my question.
All of that said, if anyone has any additional information about the qwerty.kl file, I would greatly appreciate it. Is there an API of some kind for the functions that can be mapped to keys in that file? Maybe one of them allows for some customization, and can be used to launch a specific App? Given that I actually use all 4 soft buttons, and the track pad button is both unused outside of specific apps and also the picture taking button within most camera apps, any other solution is going to eat away at me as inelegant.
To those who have offered insight or tried to help, thank you, I sincerely appreciate your time.
Hi everyone,
Just transferred from iPhone 4 to the Galaxy S4 and am experiencing comething of a shock between the two operating systems. I am NOT going to be rooting or changing the factory OS in any way, just using the sotck OS and systems provided by Samsung. My biggest questions are:
1) Disabling/Enabling pre-installed apps (AT&T junk, etc.): If I disable a pre-installed app, find that it affects a function I like (Google I'm looking at you...) and then re-enable it, will that adversely affect my phone in any way? Ie. will I get back the funcionality that I originally had? Can I brick my phone completely accidently by disabling a key application?
2) Com2USPoker: WHERE IS THIS APP? I like to know that every function on my phone works before committing but I cannot for the life of me find this app. It is not in GroupPlay, App screen, anywhere but Application manager and it says that it is enabled. Does the App only show up in GroupPlay when there are multiple samsung devices connected to the GroupPlay app? As a pefectionist, this is really bugging me that I cannot find this app.
Any advice would be appreciated! Please go easy on me as I am new to Android
I suggest you read the "pinned" threads in the General and Q & A sections before you do ANYTHING to your phone. Also, use the Q & A section as an area to bring up or ask about new or previously un-discussed issues and topics only after you have read and searched for existing topics and answers. Searching, reading, and learning will get you what you need around here.
If I were you it'd stick with the iphone. This is a development forum. Not a user forum.
Hello,
After rooting with NookManager are there any 'must do' (or highly recommended) actions? For example, I've seen other items in the 'Nook Touch Android Development' and 'Nook Touch Themes and Apps' sub-forums including the likes of 'NoRefresh'. Which of these come recommended to do/install following the root? If it matters; the use case for the Nook is *solely* as an eReader following the root. I would not want battery life to be impacted for the benefit of using the device as a more conventional tablet, for example.
Additionally (though a separate request/question) are there are any particular recommended applications - Perhaps those that have been modified for use on an eInk display, older versions which have better compatibility or any other reason to install direct rather than from the Play Store?
Thank you.

I just did all this stuff a few days ago, so bear in mind im no expert, but then again, my nook hasnt broke XD.
I would assume you have installed gapps? you wont be able to get anything on the market without it, well you can just download the apks but you may as well get the apps, you can delete the ones you dont want after. I think you arent meant to install gapps if you have deleted any b+n apps so do gapps first anyhow.
So what i would really reccommend is delete a load of the useless apks which have no use now, things like phone and camera do this by getting root browser from the play store, and navigating to system/app/ x. There is also dumb b+n stuff like social.apk which can go. You can move apps out rather than straight up delete if you arent sure if its safe to delete, one that i would avoid deleting is latinime, thats the keyboard. Look around the forums for some lists people of made for what you can delete, i cant list them off hand.
Something i would also recommend is getting a slightly better library app which someone in the forum made, you can get it here http://www.temblast.com/android.htm, its much better than the b and n library app, to install just put it on your sd (the apk) and launch via the homescreen on relaunch (its a file browser) then it will install. This is the same for any other apk's you want to install. Other apps which i like, super sudoku, works great and the browser is decent in all honesty. Advanced task killer is also handy for killing processes which are running, the stock android one is a bit pants.
I would reccomend sorting out your buttons as hotkeys, you should have nook touch mod manager, what i personally have done is left top button (android back) , left bottom button (relaunch) , left bottom button long press (to reader/currently reading) , the buttons on the right are default, n opens up library and my long press n doesnt do anything currently.
Thats all i can think of at the moment, if you have any questions, shoot away!
Thanks for the reply. I intend to remove B&N Apps using NookManager - Am I okay to do this after installing Gapps? Any reason why installing Gapps after removing the B&N Apps would cause an issue?

im not sure, but it is stated in the gapps thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2086582, i would just follow the instructions word by word to be honest, i didnt have any issues.
