I have the Ideos X5 too. The wifi drops out or at least the signal becomes worse when i cover the top side of my phone (for example when i'm typing and i want bigger letters) It is also not very good at finding wifi connections. My laptop always finds internet upstairs (3rd floor) but the phone does not... it drops out from time to time and does not recover. When i open the door and walk to the stairs (not even going down) it finds it again an the problem is solved, but still it's irritating, especially because searching for wifi eats my battery...
don't know how to solve it though... Doubt you can solve it.

What rom are you guys running?

B135 for me
I have to say though, if i'm on the second floor (modem is on the first floor) i don't have any problems. Although of cours the signal becomes less when i cover the top side, but i'll still have a connection. So it's more of a distance problem for me.

I m running oxygen r3 with franco latest
But it happens with every rom i tested

Possible Solution to WiFi Issues
Erratic wifi reliability, frequent drop outs and wifi spontaneously disabling itself (usually in the middle of app downloads) has been a "feature" of my X5 ever since I've owned it, about six months now. Rooted or unrooted makes no difference. I always use my home wifi and no other device I own has any issues with it - Dell and Apple laptops (running a mix of Mac OS X, Win 7, Ubuntu Linux and Win XP) and an iMac desktop, plus an iPad and iPod touch, they're all rock solid with my router.
Then the other day I was at my sister's place and attempted to connect to her wifi router. I got a message that I'd not seen before when connecting my X5 at home - it complained that the SSID was hidden and that "Android is unreliable" (or words to that effect) with hidden SSIDs, it recommended using an exposed SSID for the router instead with a "secure" password. I'm not sure if this was an Android message or from WFi Manager which I use, but it sure came as a surprise to me. Of course my SSID at home is hidden too.
I've changed my SSID at home to exposed and so far things seem better, a couple of app downloads and no wifi dropouts so far. I can't be sure yet but this may be the solution to my months of wifi frustration!
Of course why Android can't reliably handle a basic security feature of a long-established tech like wifi is another matter...

Hidden ssid isnt a security fearure... the ssid is still broadcasted with every data package, so one only have to wait for one of your devices to connect (also there more ways but not that easy)

Have a bit the same problem. Most of the time all is working fine.
Sometimes when the phone is locked and unlocked Wifi is not working.
Policiy for Wifi Sleep is allways on.
Sometime Wifi icon disapears wil working with it.
When is stop WiFi and start it all is fine.
My HTC Desire is working fine so it's a problem with the phone.
use with Android Stock not yet flash a mod.

WiFi?

Hi, i recently bought and upgraded a 02 XDA Mini S to WM6 and the wifi seems bad like i have to go right next to the wireless point to get a good signal and even then its not at full bar can any1 help me with this or is it just the wifi is rubbish on the wizard?
thanks,
Kurt
Did you go to start-->settings-->connections tab-->wireless LAN-->power mode tab and set it on best performance? That should give you some more room to work with.
yep still is really bad though about 10 meters and 2 walls away from the router an i couldnt get a signal.
At "10 meters and 2 walls away from the router" I also get no connection -where my Wifi enabled laptop works fine at the same time. Seems like the Wifi on the HTC device is rather weak and operates from a small distance only. Anyways I've learned to live with it.
oh rite well annoying though considering my dell axim x51 can get a very good signal like 30 meters from the access point. is there anyway i can up the power on my wizard? ive got wireless G enabled aswell.
Ya, I have a 7db antennae on my router and I still seem to need to be inside of 20 or so feet, and no walls for my wizard to find the network. I think it's just a weak card.
I also noticed that.
Yes I also noticed that. I have a wifi hotspot subscription and with my old WM5 ROM i can connect and surf without any problem, however when useing any WM6 ROM i just connect poorly and the connection breaks everytime.
Even in my wireless home router i had turn on the name broadcast (enabling WEP of course) in order to connect properly at the first try.
Ive noted this with every WM6 Rom out there and since my device is a G4 i cant upgrade the radio rom. so... well i suffer from this issue also.

Sudden drop in Wifi reception

I've searched the forum and noticed that there have been several other HD owners who have had issues with their wifi. In my case, my HD has been working fine and I've been able to use my HD in the bedroom with my home wifi which is in the living room...and that's through two doors but only about 25 feet away, but still I'm very happy with that, it's about the same as my Samsung Innov8.
Well, just about 4 days ago my HD suddenly couldn't pick up any wifi signals in my bedroom at all. I had to move to the living room and be literally about 6-8 feet away for it to detect anything. Once I stepped in to the hallway, a door away, the signal would drop. Everything else is fine, but it seems as if suddenly the wifi antenna or something in my HD has just broke or malfunctioned. Does anyone have the same experience or can offer some suggestions? I've e-mailed HTC but no reply yet. Would reflashing the radio rom do any good? Any suggestions are helpful, because one of the main things I use the HD for is to access my home wifi network, and this is pretty annoying.
There could quite possible be something in the registry that could be changed to enchance the wifi performance on the HD. Try installed HD Tweak and see what you can find in there.
You may have a 2.4Ghz radio interference. Try choosing a diferent wifi channel. Most routers enable to choose channels 1 to 13 and AUTO (enabaling the router to choose the 'cleanest' channel). There may be other wifi related configuration issues, but first start with that.
thanks for the suggestions, I'll give it try tonight...

Very bad wireless with Arc

All wireless are bad.
I often lose my wifi connection in my home. And often I even need to restart wifi.
The Bluetooth connection is bad with my car. I need to find the good position to have correct sound on the speakers.
My gprs data connection is often bad. And even if I have good phone connection.
I compare with my old HTC hd
I am really hesitating to send it back to my operator.

I dont have any of these problems, its batter to get it back and take another one since its still under warranty.
Does anyone else have issues with low wireless signal and constant dropping wireless connections?
I have a friend here are work in the same area, he has an Iphone 4 and has no issues.
LT15a arc
To be honest I never had such issues.
no problem here either - only issue I've got is Green Power free doesn't always open up the wireless connections properly when I unlock the phone and I have to stop GPF to make it work.. but the phone itself is as good as my x10 was and better then my wifes HTC legend..
Yeah my wifi is rubbish. Disconnects each time i try to download something that is a little "big" from the marked or read web pages. It's annoying as hell but it seems like the next update from SE will have a new baseband. Hoping that will fix it else it's going back!
Yeah, hopefully the next update does fix this issue. It is more stable on my home network, but still drops out occasionally.
Yes, I just this Rogers phone today. I have the same problem or even worse. as soon as I open something that's a little big from any online apps or webpage, it disconnects wifi. but it still shows wifi connection on the top. Worse thing is, it seems to crash my router as well then disconnect my whole home network. I have been using my router for more than two years and it never had any problems. (I game and p2p a lot on my ps3 and pc). I have iphone4 wireless hooked up with my router as well and it works flawelessly when open up the same webpage which causes wifi disconnect on my arc.
I am thinking about returning this phone and get nexus s if they can't get it fixed soon....
I used to have problems with the WIFI untill I unlocked the bootloader and rooted it, now its perfect. But it depends if you decide to take the risk or not.
i had no problem with home wi-fi but come to broardband data simcard its terrible slow, assume telco matter but put that sim to OS6 device its run ok
The speed and connection of my arc is quite well.
The only problem of my arc is the time it takes until connection is established.
When i release the screenlock it sometimes takes up to 30 seconds until the WiFi symbol appears and the connection is established
download from market app wi-fi keep alive, it will solve your problems for sure, i had this issue too
wifi weaker than x1 (and to think that x1 wifi were pathetic), data on gprs/3g a lot better but it's Android thingy. most errors come from carrier in my experience.

Wi-Fi auto connect issues

I am having problems with my Nexus 4 not automatically connecting to Wi-Fi. This is particularly annoying as I only live a few minutes from Uni so I spend the day cycling between my home network, uni network and 3G and set tasker to do things based on where I am. However, I look at my phone it tells me I have plenty of wifi signal yet it hasn't connected. This means I either have to switch the wi-fi off and on (which seems to take longer than it should to switch back on) or reboot the phone. After this it will connect fine. Is this a software issue? Or something that is just wrong with my phone?
Cheers
I too have wifi connection problems with my Nexus 4. I can get it to connect, but it won't reconnect. Not only does it not reconnect, it doesn't even detect that the network it was just configured to connect to is sitting right in front of it.
I've tried using Wifi Analyser, and it will show all the wifi signals in my area including those of my neighbours across the street, but it simply doesn't even show my wifi signal. Oddly in Settings, sometimes my wifi signal is not listed at all (reflecting Wifi Analyser's view), and sometimes it is listed but shown as 'Not in range'. It is very frustrating, and the only reason I have not yet RMA back to Google is I have a slight hope that the next update (4.2.2) will fix it.
Needless to say, I have a number of other devices at home (Lenovo and HP laptops, iOS tablets and phone, Windows RT tablet, Windows Phone, and Nexus 7) all of which connect to my home network OK. It is clearly a bug in the Nexus 4.
I had the same problem as you guys, i flashed Franco Kernal and it works a treat now.
Not forgetting the extra battery life the kernel provides.
I suggest trying it out.

WiFi disconnects often?

I'm really happy with the phone so far, but my wifi disconnects fairly regularly and I keep getting a force close on the SMCC Process (whatever that is). Anyone else having problems?
I just read the thread below this and that issue seems similar.
EDIT: I tried turning off the smart wifi, but it still loses connection. The phone still shows that it's connected to whatever wifi signal, but stops downloading. This happens both at home and at work, so I don't believe it's related to the router itself.
I'm seeing the same issue on mine as well. Noticed it last night playing Pandora via wifi. Would play like 3 songs then nothing. I would have to toggle wifi on/off to get Pandora playing again.

Sounds like basically the same thing. If I wait long enough, it comes back on its own, but it's faster to just cycle wifi or airplane mode once. It's fairly frustrating, and I even found myself just using 3G to do things last night instead of Wifi.
seems to be a known issue in other S4 forums:

Mixed Mode WIFI
I had this exact same problem with my EVO 4G LTE, the problem was the mixed mode WIFI. (B,G,N). On the EVO it turned out to be an easy fix because there was a setting in the WIFI menu to force either B or G. As soon as I selected one mode I had a solid internet connection. The problem here is there does not seem to be an option in the S4 settings to allow this. I have been trying to force single mode on my router to see if that will fix it but my router will not allow me to turn it off either. Pretty serious bug I would say.
WIFI worthless on brand new S4

it doesn't do it as often as it did with the SGS3 though
I really wish I could find a resolution to this. I'm thinking of wiping my phone and starting over to make sure it isn't an app issue, but man that's a lot of work.
Im having the same issue as well.. Im almost positive its common issue and i would expect it to be addressed in the next OTA
The common link seems to be DLink router. We have a Cisco Linksys router and it stays hooked up solid on that.
I have an Asus router. Don't know if there are usually problems with those or not, but I haven't had any prior issues.
I have a Cisco e4200 stock and a Asus running ddwrt operating as a wireless bridge to extend my network. I had to turn off mixed mode on both devices to resolve the issue. Hope that helps.

I have the same problem but I have Netgear routers. The one at my house works fine, but at my other location. The wifi drops.
Same problem on dlink
Adding my 2 cents because I have 2 S4's that I've been testing with and I'm getting mixed results... my first post here so I hope I'm doing this right!
I have 2 wireless routers at home:
- DLink DIR-655
- One provided by my ISP (Bell Canada; not sure of the model at the moment)
The DIR-655 is troublesome for BOTH S4 devices; they stay connected for a few minutes (or longer in some cases) but will always end up not transferring data even though they show as having a very strong signal. Turning wifi on/off always fixes the issue for a short period of time.
Knowing that there seem to be compatibility issues with the S4 and DLink router, I switched them both over to the Bell router. Now only one of the devices has the wifi issue described above.
I found it odd that changing the router being used fixed the issue for one of the devices but not the other. I'm now questioning whether one device has a hardware issue or not (doubtful on this, but worth questioning).
Both S4's have the most up-to-date firmware as do all of the routers in the house. No other devices (iPhones, laptops, apple tv, etc...) have any issues with the wifi.
I've tried resetting the routers, forgetting the wifi connection and setting it back up, rebooting the phone, smashing my head against the wall; nothing seems to have worked permanently.
Is it possible that this is a hardware issue and not a software issue? Has anyone else had similar results with multiple devices?
fix....?
this wifi drops are due to the router WIFI signal setting. it will drop it you are using a B/G Mixed signal/ B/G/N Mixed signal. i recommend setting it on 802.11 g. or, if all your Devices in the house have N use N since it has more bandwidth. i use G because of the PS3
Hope this helps resolve the issue for you guys, it sure did for me.

Thanks for the suggestion, I can attest that this wasn't a permanent solution for me. After switching to N mode only, the amount of times the issue occurred was reduced, but still happens at least once per day.
It's also a pain when I'm connected to networks where I have no control over the wireless settings (work, public networks, friends networks).
I have a linksys modem and router. Haven't had a single connection issue with this phone as I had with my EVO. As my wifi disconnects and reconnects right away. Lol. First time that has happened. Knocked on wood.

I find it disconnects much less often than the sgs3, but still occasionally disconnects
