[Q] Any Kernels that work with R800x? - Xperia Play General

I have an R800X (Verizon) PLAY. Running 2.3.3 with root and unlocked kernel. My phones build number is 3.0.1.E.0.88 and I was wondering if there is a custom kernel that allows Clockwork Recovery with overclock? If not then just a kernel with clockwork recovery would be good to. I really hate having to plug my phone into my PC whenever I want to do something. Thank you all in advance.

dont double post in 2 sections....-_-

Sorry, posted in Developement then thought it would be better to post here. Duly noted.

[Q] New Epic user, order for which updates?

I'm on information overload right now.
I think i want to do One click root v2.3.0 and Phoenix v1.49 and Epic Experience - Version 1.2.04.
My question is the order to do this and do I need clockworkmod or can I just install rom manager once I root and apply the kernal and rom updates.
And if anyone has links to how to guides handy, that would be nice. I've probably already found them by reading the forums, but I probably missed a key one.
Thanks,
Correct you will want to root first than flash clockwork recovery than flash epic experience than your kernal all in that order. You usually want to do the kernal last because some roms include the kernal. So if you don't want the provided kernal than you flash your kernal of choice. I believe there's a all in one one click method that roots and adds clockwork. Sorry not at a computer to give you links but its pretty simple. Hope this helps!

No, because you are choosing a Kernel with root enabled, you don't need to install root.
1. Install ClockworkMod using run-try-last.bat
2. Boot clockwork using VolDown + Camera + Power
3. Install Epic Experience ... don't leave Clockwork yet.
4. Install Kernel
Thank for the quick replies, makes sense. Downloading files now.

Help with roms

Hello,
Just upgraded from a droid eris, and I really want to try one of the newer CyanogenMods or MIUI roms. My phone is completely stock non rooted.
Hardware version I500.04 Firmware Version 2.2.2 Baseband version S:i500.04V.ED05 Kernel Version 2.6.32.9 Build Number SCH-I500.ED05. Now on my eris it was super simple just boot to recovery and add any rom you like, no need to do anything else.
I had a really bad experience with a Droid X, where I bricked the phone while trying to change roms. So I want to see if anyone can direct me to good tutorial step by step since I'm really a newbie on this. Video tutorial would be great. I really don't want to brick my phone again, and sometimes you miss a step and your done fore. I don't know anything about kernels, but it looks like you have to change the kernel before you add any of these newer roms. So any help would be really appreciated.
thanks
Read all the stickies in the Dev section and the q and a, but I'll send you some links with good reading material...as long as you always use the PDA button in Odin and never the phone button, and always make sure anything you flash is for Verizon fascinate only not Telus or a different galaxy s model and you will never truly brick your phone!

These are a good starting point...read the OP of these links for reference..links to files and programs, and general good knowledge! Enjoy reading learning and seeing how awesome this phone is with the help of the devs and the community...donate to the devs if possible!

X-play custom rom

Hi I'm new to the custom rom's and instead of searching through countless topics, mixing up instructions. I was wondering if I could get some directions.
Play is unrooted 2.3.3. I would like instructions on how to put a custom rom on the phone, and which custom rom would be recommended. Thanks in advance people.

is your phone fastboot enabled? (does the notification light in the power button turn blue if you hold the search button and then connect the usb to computer?)
If you want a custom rom but dont want to search and read these forums, i give your phone a week before you brick it.

or we could help people within the comunity to understand what's out there, the risks involved and how to get around the problems that could arise? we all need things explaining to us once in a while.
Oh im sorry i see your point, it is always good to be helpful, i am trying to be helpful as well when i say you should search and read, i mean look at all the countless threads where people didnt want to read, theres like 3 help im bricked threads per page.
lol. i know what you mean. and i know it can be frustrating. it's just a shame that the play is so much more complicated than the x10 that i was previously on. it was all flashtool and update.zip stuff. practically unbrickable!! loved it. fastboot and adb complicate things, and i feel that some of the tutorials can be a little confusing to total noobs. so we need to be accomodating to their lack of knowledge (i hardly know anything, so i'm still quite noobish), but also, people need to accept their own actions and consequences. not sure what i'm getting at now, but things need to be simpler for people who want to start out
Actually the way of installation is exactly the same for any custom ROM in this phone.
1) unlock your bootloader, either for free if you bought a factory unlocked phone or for some cash sending Alejandrissimo a PM, which you have to use if your phone is branded and/or Sim locked. You only need to do this step once.
2) install a custom kernel. There are two: DoomLord's kernel and the Cyanogen Mod kernel. The latter allows you only to install CM7. Doom's allows you to install the others.
3) Enter in Clockwork Mod recovery and install the ROM you prefer as long as your kernel of choice supports it.
As to which ROM you should pick, I use CM7 because it's stable and fast. Visit those threads and see for yourself which is the one you like best.
my personal favorite (until cm7 became more usable, and also because i like dooms kernel) was zerojay's aptly named zerorom. it's a very clean and fast sony based rom full of optimizations and tweaks. i'm currently trying out the FXP028 release of cm7 to see if it's more to my liking than it was in previous releases.
Unfortunately locked to Rogers. Is there a free way of unlocking the bootloader and how?
Again I'm currently running 2.3.3 nonrooted. Had it rooted on 2. 3. 2. but ofcourse lost it with update.

well, one free way could be if you could swap a branded phone to someone who doesnt care and has a generic model

True, but paying $20 dollars to get it unlocked sounds like less of a pain in the ass

Bump, has anyone been able to get Cyanogen mod onto the Rogers r800a? This locked boot loader is really causing me grief. Have the phone rooted, cwr is installed as well as busy Box. Getting closer, but still no cigar.

Just to confirm, without the proper Kernel I am more than likely to brick my play? Many Thanks!

You won't brick it, if kernel is incompatible device with either not boot, or bootloop, flahing stock rom with flashtool will fix it though.

bootloader and kernels

Okay now this is a guide for maybe noobs and mostly software modifiers.Hi reader. thanks for reading lol. now this piece of work is something that even educates me. welcome to wilbso's unlocking bootloader and adding kernels guide. im gonna try and keep this short so you dont nod off...
What is a bootloaderWell...a locked bootloaer (normal) is something that stops you from adding custom kernels. you think that rooting your phone and loading a custom rom is all. well you thought wrong. yes you can install drivers such as multitouch etc by rooting but unlocking your bootloader is a totally (almost) different thing. now, these days, gingerdx requires linuxdx-which requires unlocking your bootloader. unlocking the bootloader can either end up in satisfactory... or... full and complete brick. now a full brick is-blah blah blah ( i will make a seperate thread for what type of bricks there are and what they mean)
so, basically unlocking your bootloader properly free's your phone. still think your up to it? wow your pretty brave lol...
What is a custom kernel?A custom kernel is something other than a stock kernel.need anymore?
It is something that improves your phone. make it stand out. it can also improve the performance of your phone. if you would like to see a guide on how to build a custom kernel then click here
how to unlock your bootloader. I have unlocked my bootloader and I followed these threads. It would be a good idea to follow this and this
but when i did it i downloaded flashtool, s1tool (to check if my bootloader was unlocked) and something else ( i cant remember what it was called but it ran in my terminal i think). when i did unlock my bootloader i checked it with s1tool (i cant remember if THATS right either though lol) and i successfully managed it ut i still recommend reading the links that i put.
please, do hit the thanks button on my posts and the posts i put links to. i would greatly appreciate it.
kernelsi have looked at many different kernels since august ( the month i joined xda) and they all look cool.
flash them by a flashtool. i now run linuxdx v04
here's some kernels i have come across:
A gingerbread kernel
Linuxdx v04
Alfs for gingerdx
If you have any questions plese post them here or my FAQ or my latest guide to roms and mods. Also i am not responsible for any damage to you phone
And remember to press the thanks THANKSbutton
NO trolling here is tolerated either. cheers!

I have learned so far how to install custom rom, but in one post i have found that there are some animations to be added for my phone, and it says:
"Addons Miui Animation
Use stock kernel."
What does it mean how to install it?

i dont know much about miui cuz i isnt supported for x8 but if your talking about bootanimation. a boot animation is something that replaces your current boot up logo. you can get an app that does it and you can flash them with a recovery i think
EDIT: I have now unlocked my bootloader and I am using alfs kernel with Ginger dx v021

You don't have to flash kernel if you don't want to.you can unlock bootloader by itself. Just unlocking it means you have the ability to flash kernels and drivers

Bootloader

If the bootloader is locked to only accept signed kernels would it be possible to forge the signature? I have never thought about the development before so sorry if this seems stupid.
Why not man great great idea.
Provided you have one of the nsa's super computer..
Sorry for being saccastic but the moto key is 1024 bits thats gonna take ample amount of power to break it.(days ,months or maybe years.)
One more stupid idea from me:
We have some guys who have unlocked bootloaders , those who got the defy repaired from service stations and now have a SE OMAP. Can those guys compile a kernel which suits our need and we can just flash the kernel like we go a CM7 or CM9 (froyo or GB) from recovery?
Its just a thought.... If we just need kernel, why not go this route?
check project cheesecake in development subforum .it would help you as am noob when it comes to bootloader and development.
Btw lets see i have send my defy for a motherboard replacement and see if i get a unlocked bootloader or not..

even if they can compile a kernel, we would not be able to flash it on locked one.
Ohhh. so thats the sole reason we just have two kernels of defy...
one is froyo
other is GB
Both locked to bootloaders.
Thanks for the info...
Thanks, could we make a custom sbf and use that as a base for cm9?
