Hi, I have a problem that I suspect is an isolated situation, nevertheless, it has been bugging me for over a month now. Hopefully the community will have some insight.
I will try to report the problem in it's entirety:
I do have a shortcut on my desktop to Phone Info (*#*#4636#*#*). From here, the thing I note of interest is the CID, which I guess is the tower ID that my phone is currently connected to. Also of note here are the ASUs, which I'm not quite sure what they are, but they seem to correlate with the number of bars being reported (ie more asu = more bars).
I also use Hello IM (AIM app from the market) heavily, and I have "Show notification icon" enabled, so it works fairly well as a visual indicator of connectivity, or lack thereof.
Ever since I upgraded from Super D to an Eclair rom, I've had problems with 3G handoffs on Tmo. Basically, whenever my phone switches from Edge to 3G, or one 3G tower to another 3G tower (different CID in Phone Info), the connection times out. I see the infamous "up arrow but no down arrow" activity on the 3G icon in the notification bar. This happened just about everywhere I went.
About a month ago, I decided to upgrade the phone radio, from 2.22.19.26I to 2.22.23.02. For one reason or another, this completely solved my problem. I had no problems with handoffs, 3G just started working again.
A couple weeks ago, I downloaded CM6 and tried out Froyo. The first thing I notice is the weak signal on my radio. Before flashing the rom, I did a nandroid backup, and I know I had 3 bars of 3G signal where I set the phone down. After the flash, my phone had no 3G signal, and for some reason refuses to switch to edge; so my signal indicator is sitting there with an X over it. After some time, it finally does pick up a 3G signal--this is where it begins to get weird...
My 3G works right now, for the most part. There seems to be 2 very specific locations where it does not work. As mentioned earlier, I am able to check CID's through the Phone Info menu. I notice 2 CIDs where my 3G connection times out. By time out, I mean an apparent loss of data (ping doesn't work in Phone Info). This happens every time I am connected to these 2 towers. As soon as the phone switches off to another tower, data works fine again. The strange part is, even though I am not getting data, the asu and signal bars continue to move up and down as if I have a normal signal. The phone also makes no effort to switch back to Edge, even though 3G data is completely stalled (Hello IM shows as disconnected, ping fails).
This started happening since the CM6 update, and have persisted since then. Even after I did a nandroid restore back to my previous rom (Super E 1.02), the radio problem remains. Before CM6 and after I updated my radio, I had no problem connecting to these same towers.
In a nutshell:
3G does not work when I am connected to 2 specific towers since CM6 update
Phone makes no effort to switch to other 3G towers or Edge when connected to these 2 towers
When connected to these towers, signal strength continues to go up and down as normal; usually hovers at a consistent 2 to 3 bars with the stock signal indicator (4 bars max).
Currently I have tried flashing all the Eclair roms available, as well as my old Super D rom (still using 2.22.23.02 radio). Problem remains.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on?
I am having a strange problem with the connection speed on my inspire 4g. it is always in G or in E, never in H (this refers to the symbols displayed in the info bar, corresponding to Edge, G2 and High Speed respectively). It has nothing to do with my sim (i have put it in another phone, went into H no problems) and it has nothing to do with the network (my friend's cheapo HTC Hero is on H all the time).
I am outside the US. The phone is a HTC inspire 4g, which i bought new and decoded. Here are the steps i have been through:
- I have rooted the phone and initially installed Inspired 4G ROM; This has not solved the problem;
- I have then wiped it and made a clean install with LeeDroid ROM 2.2.3; this has also not solved the problem;
- i have flashed the radio with Radio_12.28g.60.140f_26.05.05.27_M2; still the problem continues
I am running out of ideas, why would such a smart phone not connect to a readily available High speed network?
By The way, i have dialed *#*#4636#*#* - i have tried to set the preferred network type to both WCDMA preferred and various other GPS/CDMA auto PRL, etc - no change. the phone info in this menu shows "network type:GPRS". in my friend's HERO (again same network, same place, same provider, same sim card), if i enter this menu, it says "Network type:HSDPA"
Any ideas? What's going on here?
Did it work prior to updating rom? If not, the carrier that you are using may not be on the 2100mhz/900mhz high speed bands that the dhd uses. I made this mistake and purchased a dhd without checking and I'm stuck with gprs/edge, mainly using 850mhz 2g not 3g ... until I change to a carrier that use 2100mhz/900mhz or upgrade to another phone

Did you mange to sort this out? I have a similar problem with DHD. It seems to be stuck on G. When I first installed lee droid ROM it was working fine and I got H appearing and fast download speeds ( used traffic monitor to prove the speeds) all of a sudden it seems to be stuck on the G icon.
I have has this issue for a while, i have checked all the setting on the phone (*#*#4636#*#* and connection settings). I thought it could have been my sim, I tested my mates sim on my phone( same network). when I put my sim back it I got the H network again. This only lasted for a few days and it has now gone again.
I have done tests using traffic monitor I only get speeds between 21 Kbit/s on the mobile network. In my archive I can see when I was connected to the H network , I was downloading 289 Kbit/s.
I have not flashed the radio yet as im not sure which one I should be using but surely it cant the radio as it was working on the H network twice.
I am running lee droid 2.6.35.14 Ace 3.2.1
band base version: 12.28b.60.140eu_ 26.03.02.26_M
Any ideas why this is happening?
I have that same issue STUCK ON EDGE
I need to revive this thread. I used ace hack kit released oct.27 and hack went perfect. I installed ARHD 6.1.3 and i couldnt get on H and also the rom itself was unresponsive and would do all kinds of crazy things. I downgraded to 6.1.1 which i had put on my brothers phone and worked great but exact same issue on the new one here. So then I tried old faithful ARHD 5.1.11 and the rom works perfect but im still stuck on edge network. I get full signal almost all the time in a 4G area but only get edge. Im set on GSM/WCDMA auto, I tried to go WCDMA only and i lost all signal and it switched itself back to auto. Im totally outta ideas. Im in canada, could it be that this phone is the Euro DHD? How can I check?
Hi, since I got this phone and I've been having problem with the data connection, wifi is working fine, but 3G is not, it shows the 3G symbol but keep switching to H symbol and back again to 3G constantly, i never been able to surf the web or do anything online on 3g connection since i got it.
I tried putting in the setting from my provider and got the samsung network app thingy but nothing helped, even after updating to NoDo.
This is really bothering me i cant enjoy the phone when im outdoors, i switched back to my iPhone 3gs temporarily.
I really hope this can be solved.
I'm thinking if there is some way to make the phone only works on 3G and turn the H off.

H is for HSDPA and is far more faster than 3G. I reckon you run ADC on startup using samsung tools and hopefully the problems with connection will be resolved. Alternatively contact your sim provider for network configurations.
Here it also switches between H and 3G, or well it did on my other wp7 phone my (european) omnia uses 3g+. That's normal; the H mode probably eats your battery alive, and it only switches to it when your data connection is active (i.e. data is being transferred)
Your problem appears to be an Access Point problem, you can configure one yourself at the mobile connection settings page. (bottom). Check the web for the settings you'll need.
You see most phones are configured automatically by their providers, but the omnia probably isn't supported.
Hope this helps
the APN for China Unicon is "3gnet"
just add it your 3g connection will work.
Something strange I've noticed with my Galaxy S II is that data / internet will only work if the 'H' (for HSDPA) is in the status bar, but not with '3G' there...the green arrow will appear next to the 3G when I try to connect to something but it will just time out unless it happens to switch to 'H'.
Anyone know why this would be? Is only the HSDPA network working with my phone, but regular 3G won't?
It is possible that the 3G cells in your area are fully loaded with users.

nvm
i didn't read it well
Same problem here, on 3.
Wondered if it was the phone or the network! If it's a problem with the phone it'll be fixable/covered by warranty though, right?
Same here, it sits on 3g then i try to load a page etc and it goes to h like it carnt use 3g , im on t mobile and they have full coverage where i am

I found an older thread that says it's a feature, keeping the phone in 3G mode to save battery until you do something that requires data which switches it over to H. I've kept a closer eye on my phone and that does seem to be what it's doing, usually taking a second or two to switch over each time I use data.
However, there have still been some times where it stays on 3G and is unable to load data.
Yeah i think your right and also it does not change sometimes and kinda hangs, be nice for it to switch over to H abit faster without battery drain.

I have the same issue with my phone to on t-mobile, not working on 3g then working on H.
It is a right pain to be honest.
No way of stopping this battery save? I would rather use more battery.
It's the network. I have no explanation but only Edge and HSDPA work whether on Samsung or Nokia.
Just tested, this does not occur for me, at least right here, right now. Comfortably loading pages on Google with just 3G signal (T-Mobile UK).
It's faster when I stand on my bed upstairs for HSDPA but 3G does work. Stock firmware from T-Mob, no modifications.

Hey mate,
I have the galaxy s i9000, with optus here in sydney. same problem, only switches to "H" when i make some sort of data request (load a page, open an app that uses internet), it takes a couple of seconds to switch from 3G to H. Sometimes, it keeps flicking back and forth between 3G and H like its having problems connecting to H
I complained to optus, they reckon i'm lying. Go figure.

Sorry.. just to add on, i've tried about 13 different modems on my i9000 and it happens with all of them.
The only fix I've come by? dial *#301279# and disable HSDPA altogether thats the only way my phone will actually load any data on 3G
I have the same thing, but as i understand H and H+ are the highest form of 3G, not a different thing. So I am wondering what mode we are in when 3G appears. UMTS?
Its all very annoying to be honest.
None of my other phones have this problem as they always stay on HSPDA
Same problem here to the extent that pages fail to load on 3g and come up with the error then when I refresh the page once its on H it loads straight away.
Actually this problem is making my phone more or less not usable.
I use the slingplayer alot, keeps skipping on the Galaxy S II as it seems to keep switching between H and 3G.
Put the sim card into my ZTE Blade (Orange San Francisco) and streams constantly with no problem with signal staying on H.
With all the threads relating to 3g and connectivity issues..we can deduce that SGS2's modem really sucks big time..and still no firmware update to correct this even though large number of people is facing some sort of problem with mobile internet which is a main function on todays smartphone.

Anyone know who to e-mail with examples at Samsung?
I guess they won't fix a problem if they don't realise there is one.
Some people will prefer longer battery when its on 3G then H, others will want the constant H.
I got mine a week after it released. The first two updates mine did the same thing, but instead of timing out, it would drop all signal and display the circle. After a reboot signal would come back. From KE7, it has not done it again.
AT&T in the U.S.
same problem, mode switches around when using data, 3 australia
I've been following the mobile data connectivity issue that some users are experiencing (where data connection drops randomly, apparently coinciding with a lot of switching between 3G/H/H+).
Initially, people suggested disabling 'fast dormancy' using *#*#9900#*#*, however, this did not work for many, including myself.
In this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15250511&postcount=6, there appears to be a solution, albeit a workaround.
I have started this thread, as there are so many separate threads about this issue, and only the Telstra Australia thread had this answer (as far as I've read). I have copied the post (a repost from whirlpool) by dusty_nz below. Basically, the problem is serious, the guys from Samsung have insisted this will be fixed in KE9, but there is a workaround in the mean time (disabling H+ and H, or just disabling H+ using *#301279#). This may seem drastic to speed freaks, but 3G connection alone should still give you 1.5 Mb up/down if you can put up with that. This has worked for me, no more data stalling, no more server errors etc. etc. I hope H/H+ will be fixed in future firmware.
Here is the post:

****************** FIXED ******************
After contacting Samsung for an insane period of time (ended up on an international call to England i think... or now that i think about it could have just been some English guy in Aus lol) I have got an official explanation and confirmation that this issue is being looked into for KE8 (but it appears that KE8 has been launched in India already so it might be KE9).
*disclaimer*
I am no expert on mobile technology this in-depth however the (probably very) dumbed down version the Samsung guy told me was this;
*end disclaimer*
The problem stems from the fact that this phone has 3 forms of data connection, 3G, HSDPA, and HSPA+.
3G is what we have all had since 3/Telstra launch 10 years ago.
HSDPA is the 7.2mbps connections that we got after that.
HSPA+ is the full fledged 42mbps Next G stuff that only Telstra has.
The problem is, when you are just using the phone as "a phone" it idles on a 3G connection to save battery and when you initiate a data connection it flicks on to the higher connection protocols for better speed.
What is supposed to happen when you initiate the data connection is the phone checks for H+ connection, then for H and then finally 3G. For some reason if you arent with Telstra or are in an area without HSPA+ the phone gets hung up for too long attempting to initiate the H+ connection and refuses to drop back to H!
Also, even if it does give up on H+ it then has an issue with falling back to 3G. Resulting in the problem that if it cant get H+ or the tower is too flooded for a H connection you get absolutely nothing until you restart the data mode within the phone, renegotiates with the tower and BAM, you are back in business.
So... there are 5 fixes;
1. Wait for KE9 (or what ever firmware fixes the modem timings etc)
2. Get a Telstra sim and never leave an area that has H+
3. Turn off/on data mode whenever it happens
to which i told him they were stupid answers and completely unacceptable, but then he came out with this complete gem!
4. using service code *#301279# you can turn off HSPA+ completely forcing it to start the data connections on HSDPA
5. using *#301279# again you can just turn off HSPA+ and HSDPA meaning it instantly starts downloading the data on 3G without delay
Now yes, i thought... great... ive bought this $779 phone that has all the latest and greatest technology and I cant even use it! But, I did some testing!
First of all my normal sim is Vodafone so turning off HSPA+ is an obvious one for me, im never going to get it so why bother. So now that the phone only attempts to get a connection with HSDPA the need to turn off and on data connection was getting more and more rare but still having the problem (i have a feeling that is due to congestion?). So i bumped it down to 3G only and it works perfectly 100% of the time!
The point of these faster connection protocols is speed so i did testing.
Vodafone sim, 4 bars of signal in the middle of a shopping centre.
HPSA+ turned on = 4mbps down, 1mbps up
HSDPA turned on = 4mbps down, 1mbps up
3G only = 3.5mbps down, 1mbps up
did this over and over and over again and to be perfectly honest, im willing to lose 500kbps to make sure that data always works and if you are just doing general web browsing the time it takes to initiate the HSDPA connection wastes more time than the slightly slower speeds with 3G does.
Now obviously this only works fine in my situation, if you are with Telstra and going from HSPA+ down to 3G means going from 20mbps to 3... i would be pissed. But for the rest of the country you are talking about a loss of less than 1mbps so in real world situations with just small amounts of burst data its fine
TLDR; Try and go online and the 3G up arrow lights up but never actually downloads anything
Dial: *#301279# – Change HSPA revision – Release 5 HSPDA only
test, if still a problem

Just tried this and I got 1800kbps on 3g!!
Hmm, i played around with those codes. If i choose to drop H+ and H, stays on 3G, but speed is crappy for me. So i want to drop only H+, but when i do that phone stays only on 3G too, not attempting to connect to H. Am i doing something wrong ?

Option [1] Release R99(HSPA OFF) - This should turn H+ and H off
Option [2] Release 5(HSDPA ONLY) - This should turn just H+ off (what you want)
Option [3] Release 6(HSDPA/HSUPA) - This should turn H+ and H on
To test this, you might want to make sure you are in an area that can pick up 3G, H and H+.
One week on since I selected Option [1] and I have not had any data stalling issues, before I was having data dropping every few minutes whilst browsing.
I tried Option [2] and still had the stalling issue.
Good luck.

I hardly ever get H+, which is why i want to turn it off, thing is if i choose option 2, i only get 3G, while with option 3 i get 3G and H (probably H+ too if i were in the right place). Option 1 works fine, doesn't seem to stall, but 3G speed is crap in my network, that's why i wanted option 2.
Tried all three settings and I am getting about the same speeds with all three settings, 3600-4200 down and 1550-1620 up. So will try setting 1 to see if my connection carries on dropping out.
Thanks

I actually tried this before on a few different radios and it didn't really work. The real problem I have is when I get in an elevator for a minute and get out shortly. It's not long enough in the elevator for the phone to say "No Signal" but it's still long enough for the data connection to hang and never bother hooking back up when I get off the elevator.
I'll try again though... will report back.
same here .... i tried the three options but problem persist
I have tried the codes above, including disabling dormancy but my internet still will not connect to the internet. Please help.
I'm with Optus (TPG) and I never really see H. It's either 3G, or H+.
I tried disabling H+ (option 2), and like the other guy now I only see 3G.
My Speedtest with only 3G was:
Down - 228.2kB/s
With H+ enabled (option 3), my Speedtest was:
Down - 482kB/s (but it's been as high as 1103.9kB/s in previous tests.
For now I'll just keep it as it is and put up with the occasional freezes. Hopefully it's fixed soon in a firmware release.
i cant seem to get the codes working.. after i dial *#301279# nothing happens, no menu nothing. tried on my wife's galaxy s 2 same thing.. is there an app to disable HSDPA?
\\Issue solved
Is this issue mainly due to the carrier?
I did not have this problem b4. Now I found that my phone might suffer from this.
Tried to disable the H+ or H & H+ at the same time, it seems the issue is still there.
I am on Vodafone Australia network. And I just raised this similar topic on Whirlpool, if you guys would like to discuss this network problem on an OZ forum, plz refer to the below

For me it's still the same, coming from KF2 to KG2. Will try KG3.
Any one with new modem firmware that 100% fixed the 3G drop/stuck connection(only see upload sign lit) bug? I am running KG1 modem(stock rom no root) and still experiencing this issue on ATT in Bloomington, Indiana USA.
I also realized S2 uses Infineon modem chip which is the same supplier for the iPhone3G that had the 3G slow down, drop call issue..
Could this issue be the chip at the end?? Why would Samsung taking forever to fix this critical flaw on I9100??
I'm on 3 UK. Had the cutout on KG1 and KG2. But it's definitely gone away in KG3.
I'm on Airtel India on KG3 and I still have the data stalling issue.
Seems to me like this issue surfaces more when I'm at home on wifi and then step out to data.
Trying out these service codes now to see if it helps to turn off high speed data.
It would make sense for Samsung to include these settings in the rom itself even for those without issues but want to save battery.
