For the last 2 or 3 months I've noticed my proximity and light sensor don't work on my Focus 1.3.
The screen doesn't turn off while on a call and the camera button can wake the phone with the screen turned off.
I've also seen that the screen doesn't auto dim any longer when in a dark room.
I held off on doing the warranty swap with ATT because I thought Mango might fix it but I haven't had any luck.
Do you have any suggestions?
When you mean the camera button wakes the phone up, does it launch the camera app, or is it like the power button is pressed (when the screen is off)?

That I have seen was a setting I had in the camera settings but the rest I've seen still stands.
Diagnosis app
So basically you need to recalibrate your proximity and light sensors with the diagnosis app. Please read the sticky thread for diagnostic codes. This issues has been discussed. Off the top of my head I can't remember the codes how to do it. I would search the forum for proximity sensor and light sensor recalibration.
Update-
1. If you don't have the diagnosis app you need to type ##634# in your dial pad
2. type *#0*# - diagnosis app not the dial pad
3. Recalibrate the Light and the proximity, then restart your phone. Should be fixed.
As for holding the camera button and the screen lights up. That is an advantage/shortcut to get to picture mode. That setting can be disabled if you go
1. Windows home live tile screen
2. settings
3. Swipe over to applications
4. pictures + camera
5. disable press and hold camera to wake up the phone or enable prevent accidental camera lauch when phone is locked

So this should work for both?!
This makes me very happy! I'll report back soon.
Huh when I get into the Proximity recal it only shows XXX (No Detection) and never changes anything.
Am I doing it wrong?
EDIT: The value reported for light is staying at 0000 too.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045167&highlight=proximity
Is hinting that I have a busted set of sensors and will need to warranty it.
play with the set and reg button. Also, restart the phone to see if it will work. Not to insult your intelligence but you know where the proximity and light sensor are right? Hold your finger in front of it on it moving it further and closer. If none of these work you might have defective sensors. I like to try everything a couple of time before I take it in for warranty.
I do know where the sensor is, right next to the earpiece.
I've restarted the device and tried the sensors again but no luck.
When I try to set the light value at something I get some error about "Light_SetCalValue : DeviceloControl failed" and for the proximity test the screen always stays red even if I cover the whole phone with my hand.
I'm in the same boat. I've been debating on just rolling all the way back to stock and starting all over. Of course if it is a hardware issue I'm just going to be wasting time. Then again it probably would be best to roll back before sending it in on a warranty issue...
My other concern is if they do cover it what am I going to get back? Don't really want to be stuck on a Rev 1.4 focus as that STILL seems to be causing issues.
I hear ya tanders04, it would stink to get a 1.4 back.
Also, thank you siralex241 for the help.

This is for Samsung Omnia 7 if you have used the Diag app/code to mess about with the settings. I had screwed my rotation by changing some settings. Tried a reset via code but that didn't work. In the end I used code *#2580# to enter integrity control and ensured it was at '1' (on), then use code *#0*# to enter LCD test, lay the phone flat and press the 'CAL' button. It returned 'true' and now my accelerometer works again.
Hope this is actually a fix and it helps someone out. I have noticed a few people lost the rotation on their Omnia 7's. This will probably work for Samsung Focus too. If this does fix your problem let us all know so this can help others too.
Yep - that CAL is calibrate, I imagine. You can also do it with the "Level" application from Microsoft (spirit level thing) if you don't fancy the diag codes.
Diagnostics / Accelerometer (+ fix)
Yes, if you play around in the diagnostics - BE CAREFUL!
To enter diagnostics on your Samsung (confirmed for Omnia 7) enter ##634# and press "call"
Then type the following for the following services:
*#0*# Various diagnostic settings incl accelerometer, compass, screen colour
*#2*# Detailed battery info (incl. charge to nearest 1%)
*#3*# Screen brightness
Be carefull if you choose to calebrate the accelerometer as it will muck up your auto rotation if the phone is incorrectly positioned.
To reset the rotation do the following:
- Ensure the yellow flowers picture is upright (aligned with the flowers towards the top of the phone)
- Lay the phone down on a true horizontal flat surface (XYZ values do not matter for this) ensuring the flowers remain upright
- Touch the "Cal" button. If you get "True Return" you have reset. If "false", try again in slightly different positions until it works.

Thank you !
I am currently experience another issue since I launched that app.
The start button doesn't turn on the display anymore,
maybe I'm getting crazy but I think holding that button was indeed turning the display on.
Actually I did miss my calibration but thanks to your help, I fixed,
do you think the Start button issue could be related to that tool as well ?
Thank you
Would this solve the slow auto rotation of the UI?
I had the HD7 and the auto rotation on the Omnia seems to damn slower and less responive than it was on the HD7

I have the exact same problem for a few days now, don't remember what could have been the setting for it.
Start button doesn't turn on the display anymore. I want that back! How can I get the start button to default?
Thx.
I have just reset my phone to factory defaults : Parameters, About, Reset ...
Notice that resetting will erase everything, I've lost my IE favorites by the way ...
Everything is back, Start button as well ...
In fact I did play too much with the settings, it was turning the screen off
as soon as I was making a call, the only way to turn it back on was the called one to end the call ...
Tried to fix (lol) proximity and lights settings but nothing ...
I think I'll just leave the Diagnostics app. for now, too dangerous
there seems to be an option to do that as well from the app.
But will it erase your data ? I don't know ...

My proximity sensor went crazy too. The fix is to go to diagnostics mode (google for it) and register a bit larger proximity value as a default. I used my hand to block the sensor. On my phone the absolute minimum seemed to be 3, which made the phone unusable. Something in the range of 10-20 seemed to be the most useful compromise. You may need to experiment a bit to get a suitable value. This way you don't have to reset the entire phone.
I still wonder what the default proximity value is... if anyone knows, please reply.
I have Samsung Focus 1.3 Mango 7720, but i don't see "cal" in the settings of the Proximity?
can you help?
Thanks
This has been happening pre and post Nodo on my focus. If i'm on a phone call for at least a few minutes, then pull the phone away from my head, the phone's display should become active, but it isn't.
Anyone else having this issue or is it time to exchange the phone?
I have the same issue also it seems like I have to press the power button a couple of times to get it back.
Sent from my SGH-i917 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
I'm also having this issue. Anyone remember if ther were having it pre-Nodo? Just wondering if the update changed something.
Regardless, it's a bit of a PITA.
I experienced this after having to replace a cracked screen. I just recalibrated the proximity sensor with my finger about an inch away and it worked fine.

How did you do that?
Yeah, ditto that - how do recalibrate the sensor?
Samsung Diagnostic App.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=839154
I was pecking around the screens months ago, and there was one bank of tests (multi-touch, red, green, blue, white, battery, etc, etc) that allowed setting and viewing the proximity sensor.
I remember playing with moving my hand closer, and further and watching it change from sensed to clear.
Sorry, can't remember which codes now.
I used the Wiki:

LCD Test - *#0*#
Ok, mine says No Detection. Is there anyway to set the value?
One other thing to note, about the samsung focus specific update regarding disabling the touch sensitive buttons while in a program, that also isn't working for me either. Not sure if they are related, but thought I'd throw it out there.
And as far as calibrating goes, not sure it would help since the problem only occurs while I'm on a longer phone call. On short ones the proximity sensor works just fine.
If you move your finger closer to the sensor, it should eventually change to Detected. The "set" button at the bottom should set the proximity sensor to the new distance. Mine is around 75.

samsung focus post nodo
I believe the prox sensor issue is happening post nodo, I have never had this problem prior to the update... I have been able to fix it temporarily by pulling the battery and starting it up... don't know how long the fix works... got to do some testing... I am wondering if its a power thing as the screen wouldnt work when you plugged it in to power and had on a soft surface....
Still nothing. I didn't want to hard reset since I have Chevron installed. For some reason I did four updates on my phone and don't have a single backup. If I hard reset I'm S.O.L. with Twin Blades and other homebrew apps
What value does it show when you press the Reg button?
I've had issues with my earring tapping the screen while I talk and I had it fixed before NoDo, but the values reset when it was installed, they also appear to be different values now as my screen got supper finicky after the update. I was constantly hanging up or scrolling through multiple pages of stuff with my ear and you could see the screen turning on and off. I ran the proximity calibration while holding my hand in front and set to it to 1.
If it shows xx have you tried setting the value with nothing in front of the phone to see if it will at least zero out?

another thing is wrong
seems like my light sensor is fried as well... I am starting to wonder if it's because of bad placement of the usb port... both lay right in front of the port, can't imagine pluging in and unpluging the phone would help if the sensors are right in front. I can't get either sensors to work anymore, even with a battery pull... does anyone else have this issue? goto the diagnosis menu and type
*#05#
you should be able to run through all the tests, I skip the feedback loop... Start at 1 and work your way through.
My Prox sensor says, no sensor XXX, and my light sensor is stuck with a value and will not change even when I cover the sensor... looks like a warranty replacement... how does this work with a sd card installed, the official WP7 ATT certified 8GB? Anyone else have to do this?

same problem here. seems like those two sensors are burned
Hello all.
I have a Samsung focus with an "always on" proximity sensor. So the phone does not light up after it has moved away from ones face during a phone call, making it impossible to use after any call without a restart.
I have tried the following solutions.
1- Soft Reset by pulling the battery and waiting
2- Hard reset using numeric codes provided in the ref threads
3- Using the diagnostic menu.
With regards to the third one. The proximity sensor menu shows that the sensor is always "on" no matter where the phone is. But there is no "set" or "reg' button that I can find with which to recalibrate it, the only option is "exit"
It is quite possible that I am missing a feature or function or I need a new solution. If anyone has any insight that would be really helpful.
Thank you in advance.
Same
I have exactly the same problem. Did you solve it ?
You will need to give a little more information. What os version are you running and what diagnostic app are you running. I think the most up to date diagnostic app is ver(.0103).
1. uninstall your diagnostic app
2. install the diagnostic app again to get latest app ##634#
3. open the diagnostic app and type *#0*#
4. tap the proximity sensor button and see if you see set reg and exit soft keys
Issue with proximity sensor in Samsung focus sgh i917
I have the same problem. My LED screen broke recently and replaced it.
It looks like after the screen replacement, the phone's proximity sensor is always in detected mode [in the diag]. So when ever a phone is made or answered the LED screen goes blank disabling all functionality till the other person disconnects.
I ran the diag but it doesn't give me an option to calibrate the sensor. I tried to install the latest diag tool too but same results. There is only one button, "EXIT".
The diagnostic app version is .0628
OS version is 7.10.7720.68

Ah, I had no idea that shortcut existed!
Yeah, I can definitely see how this could be a problem. Doesn't look like there's a fix yet for non-rooted devices.
I'm thinking/guessing that something else is causing the issue.
When the phone is in your pocket, I would think that the proximity sensor would be covered. If the proximity sensor is covered, then pressing volume down does not open the camera app (you can try this yourself by putting your thumb over the proximity sensor and trying to use the volume down key to open the camera app; for me it doesn't open. Take my thumb off, try again, and it does open).
Is your pocket "see through" or does it possibly allow light to pass through? Or does the top half of your phone stick up and outwards from your jeans pocket (where the proximity sensor might be exposed is what I'm eluding to)?
The proximity sensor is supposed to prevent "pocket pictures". Can someone who has the problem try the thumb test? If the camera app still opens with the sensor covered, that would at least explain it (doesn't solve the prob but we'd know why).
Edit: *if* it looks to be a prox sensor issue, here's a free app to test it -- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tigermonster.proxfinder&hl=en

wait a minute... is the sensor by the front camera? i still can open my camera when covering the sensor. why isnt my sensor working????
EDIT: the proximity sensor app shows my sensor working. what is happening?
Hmmm... I do not know.
Yes, the proximity sensor is in the cluster of 3 at the left of the earpiece grille (camera, proximity/ambient light sensor, led).
I have read on other boards that sometimes a screen protector can interfere with the proximity sensor. Some screen protectors go over that cluster, others have cutouts for them (the one that came with my phone has cutouts). The manual suggests that we check that the area around it is clean (not sure if they meant fingerprints or what).
So, with the sensor covered up, the volume down key still opens the camera app, correct? Hmmm... oh. Does your phone answer a call by putting it up to your ear (if you have that enabled)? I think that feature uses both the proximity sensor and the motion sensor.

Hmmm, my phone normally can open camera in my pocket when pressing camera shortcut.
I always use this shortcut to take a photos when I need it for "urgent" moment.
I pull in my hand to pull out my phone from my pocket, I press the shortcut, so after I pull out my phone, the camera is ready for me.
And that's normal for me.
Can you check the camera button, is it too soft and too easy to accidentally pressed?

Holy crap, please tell me how to do this. I have Ti Backup and can freeze it if I can figure out what to freeze.
After LP update I noticed, that my phone is having issues with proximity sensor during calls. Usually it happens more often when I hold it by my ear with left hand, but happened already even o right ear. Screen goes on during call and I press buttons with my ear, usually ending up with call on hold. I dont remember these problems on KK.
So I went to service menu and tried HW Device Test (2nd option in service menu) - ACL Proximity test. It seems to work quite well, phone detects my hand closing to proximity sensor at cca 3-4 cm activating NEAR state.
But when I go to Device test (1st option in service menu) and select Service Menu - Auto Test then in shows Pass on first screen, so I manually touch Pass button. And on second screen it says in red Proximity Cal Fail. And only option is to slide Exit button to end test. Seems that my proxy sensor calibration is failing, but maybe I'm supposed to do something to avoid that? Can someone verify, if it is standard behavior of this test? Thanks ahead...
@Wlk is this issues resolved sir ? I got the same with yours
Here's a solution that I discovered. In the Autotest (see OP post), choose "FAIL" instead. Then, it will let you calibrate the sensor by asking you to cover the sensor, and uncover the sensor. Then, it will recalibrate properly and all the proximity sensor issues vanish . Exit the Hidden Menu and you're done.
