Backlight died after a 20% drain. - Nexus S General

Hi,
(I did search on google and xda).
No solutions found so far.
On my nexus S (no 4g); the screen turn off when the battery was about at 20%.
Impossible to get it back on. The backlight is very very very low, I can say almost off. In a absolute dark I can see the screen to make my backups.
What I tried :
- Complete flash rom ( running CM7)
- Hard reset
- Battery change
- Using the device on AC power
My guess is that the phone's dead because even on boot the backlight's off.
So far, on the internet, it seems to be a recurrent problem...
Any solution? BTW : this device is from a exchange on a old warranty. It's about 2 month old and I can't return it back...
Thanks

How about Pull the battery out for a night to let it lost power and memory at all.

Done, but only for 4 hours...
I'll try for a night.
Thanks

Worth a try but it really sounds like the display is broken. Still got warranty? You should also try to flash stock and "oem lock" it before, obviously.

Hi guys, try giving it a full charge every nite, e.g 11pm to 6pm, regardless of the battery level left on the indicator. I do it continously for full five days and I dun encounter this prob. Furthermore, my charge can hold longer even till 2 days full medium usage.

Battery during the night

Since a couple of nights I noticed that my galaxy note can't last through the night, even with a reasonably well charged battery.
At some point I also accidentally woke up during the night and noticed that the screen was spontaneously on, showing the lock screen.
This morning I checked the battery usage, and took 2 snapshots.
As you can see, at some point the screen is activated and remains so for hours.
Does anybody have a clue on what could be the culprit, or how to find it out, I suspect some app, since this was not happening from the beginning of my gnote usage.
I still have the original os running (2.3.6)

Have you tried restarting or factory resetting your phone? It must be some application you may have installed. I haven't come across anything like this before.
You remove the charger from the phone without unlocking it. It is a known issue that prevents the phone to sleep. So next time first swype your finger on the screen to unlock it then unplug the charger, if not then restart the phone so it can go to deep sleep state.

Is the screen which stays constantly on the lockscreen a side effect of wakelock also? Did not know that.
The thing is that I use two batteries, so I almost never charge the phone itself. And since I replace batteries, I regularly reboot the phone (at least once a day). Does not seem to help.
I would prefer to avoid resting to factory defaults, one reason being that I would like to find out which app has such a malicious behavior.
But perhaps it's hard to catch the culprit, and I won't escape a reset (or a reverse chronological install of apps until the issue is resolved)

[Q] crazy battery drain in nexus 4

Hi all,
New to the forum. Sorry if somebody has already posted something similar. Tried to search but could not find any.
The reason I am here:
Yesterday night before going to the bed, my phone battery was >80% charged. In the morning I found my phone switched off. I had to restart the phone using the power button. The battery was at about 40% down when I turned it on.
I dont use the phone much through out the day, so it uses around 20% in a day(morning to night).
There is nothing unusual that I can see in the battery usage stats. Attaching screen shots for reference.
The graph shows a sudden decrease in the battery power. I am not sure if any sofware can consume so much of power in such a short time, unless there is a hardware issue or the battery readings themselves are incorrect.
This is the third time in the last 5 days that I found my phone powered off in the morning with a sudden fall in battery power.
I am using the stock android 4.2.2 with all the updates applied.
Can anybody please help me understand whats going on?
When it drops straight down it signals either a reboot or a power off. Something is causing your phone to turn off (obviously), it isn't just a battery drain issue. That said, it shouldn't drop that much if it is off.

Thanks josh, is there a way to debug whats trigerring the shutdown? What worries me is the sudden power drop? Could this be a harware issue?
There might be some safety mechanism which will shutdown the phone in case it finds the battery current is extremely high. I am just guessing.

The battery % indicator isn't completely accurate so whenever you reboot your device it tends to show as a lower value than before you rebooted it. I find that whenever I reboot my device the instant drop is then offset by a slower than normal drain as shown by the indicator. Obviously the drain is no different but this is just what the indicator is showing.
I wouldn't worry about the drop itself so much, just what has caused the reboot. I can't help you there so maybe someone else has an idea on how to figure that out, good luck!
Try flashing the stock image again; efrant's guide in my signature is the best & most educational way to go about it..
P.S. overheating will shut the phone down. Maybe some rogue app misbehaving? Long shot but could be it. Search for betterbatterystats here in xda, see if some app produces some crazy wakelocks. If not, go back to the top..

You can monitor with betterbatterystats.
And if you are rooted you can check the root features in advanced settings to see any alarm that occur.
This will help you debug the problem.

I wouldnt be worried about the battery drain.. That is usual for your situation as you hardly use your phone, the battery reading isnt always accurate and is most accurate after a reboot.
If your reallt worried. Reflash stock images fromm Google. Don't use toolkits and learn something about fastboot and your phone.

Internet crashes my oppo

I installed on my oppo 5 pure AOSP, which i didn't like so I have decided to move to MIUI.
after moving to MIUI my phone started turning off by itself (screen goes black) and the only way to turn it back on is to connect it to a charger.
So i moved back to stable stock rom and still, moved to stock beta phone crashes.
thank I noticed that the crashes happens whenever the phone is connected to the WIFI or the mobile network data.
if both are off the phone is working steady, but the moment i put any of them on the phone crashes.
BTW it is only mobile network data, phone calls are still working without crashing the phone.
I need help!!!
edit #1: i installed cm10.1 and it doesn't crash when connected to WIFI, but mobile network doesn't work at all (no signal)
edit #2: even when i am doing a proper shutdown to the phone, i cannot power it on unless i connect it to the charger, battery is show more than %50
thanks,

I have a similar problem. I suggest you full wipe and install latest beta.
If you have a second phone like me, try to use airplane mode then WiFi. If it still occurs then it is probably hardware.

last night i installed the latest stable, than full wipe, than again flashed the latest stable and left the phone charging for the night.
this morning, it seems like it is working fine, but the battery is draining in a rate of %10 per hour!!! even without doing anything on it
Does it overheat? Can you install battery log and start logging?I want to see the first graph with the Battery + Celsius reading.Mine does something similar, but CM based roms can't even work.

OK, Cool.I need a full discharge log and a charge log (till battery hits 100% again).
Is this with airplane mode on?
the phone battery was draining quicker than before and after 11 hours of low usage, but the upside is that it was behaving fine during these hours. at the 11th hour the phone suddenly died while it was at %21.
now I am charging the phone while it is off until it will reach %100 and i will power it on and upload the logs.
I did not had a secondary phone at the time so i was still using it (well, I was visiting my family so I was eager to show off my new phone )

low use, not on airplane mode.
keep in mind that the strangest thing was that the phone died at %21
here is another log and screenshot.
the phone was on all thru the night starting from around 11pm until this morning around 7am the battery was around %64.
since than again a low usage until now 12pm the battery is at %19.
edit #1: not too long after sending this message my phone died at %7....
why it is off before getting to %0???
Wow mate.Just like mine. It is either hardware or software. Started one day. I will post my logs when I get home. OPPO does not even respond.

no signal and saviour
the no signal problem is a issue that appears on Cm10 and some other roms based on Cm you gotta reboot your device some times until the radio wakes up. the other problem , try to install Aospa ( paranoid android ) and wipe everything wipe factory and system also wipe dalvik cache and cache. install zip and Gapps ( or do the same method but install STOCK , u can find stock firmwareon the oppoforums )

[Q] AT&T S4 Battery Drain when Plugged and Charging extremely slow.

Hope someone can help me solve this issue.
The Setup
I recently went out of the country and before I left I unlocked my GS4 following from wonderhowto[dot]com
Arrived to my Carribean destination, bought a prepaid SIM, popped her in and everything worked great.
Problems started when I flew back into Miami. I removed my prepaid SIM and installed my old one, changed my APN name back
and rebooted the phone. Decided to plug it into my laptop (USB3.0) to get some extra juice before the next flight and I noticed that
the battery was actually going down and quite quickly too, about 1% every 3 minutes. The phone was also doing a lot of connecting and disconnecting from the laptop even though it was not being moved.
I use two batteries which I have an external charger for , so this didn't slow me down too much.
After a few days, I thought maybe by unlocking the phone I had left it in some "roaming" state where it was eating up battery looking for its signal, so I decided that I'd restore it to the nandroid backup ROM Manager created before I did the unlock procedure. OH NUGGETS!
Things got ugly , quick!. In the process of trying to restore got MD5 mismatch error, so I went back to 3 previous backups before all of which said either "MD5 mismatch" or unable to open .zip -None of them worked.
Thankfully I had saved a copy of the backup folder in clockworkmod to my PC and tried to load that, it started and then get to writing /data and said error writing data.
I rebooted. Bootloop.
After a few hours of attempts with KIES, and some well timed cold beer deliveries from my wife, I finally got the phone back to stock version.
Rooted it again, motochopper, And loaded GoldenEye Rom v 8.0 . Still slow to little or no charging.
Loaded PACMAN and noticed something that should be mentioned.
Pacman rom has its own little battery widget that sits in the top tray and shows the %. It glows green from bottom to top to show that it is charging. I noticed on every couple of cycles, the battery meter would flash red for a quick second before turning green and sweeping up.????
Went back to a backup of GoldenEye8.
The current status
The phone is currently plugged in to the stock charger (2A) and stock cable. It has charged up only about 3% in 20 minutes time. I have it in battery saving mode with wifi on , and EVERYTHING else turned off.
Battery info says:
Temp 87.3 F
Voltage 4033mV
Plugged True
Charging
Li-ion
Health:Good
Charge Type : AC
Battery use shows 62% of battery use coming from SCREEN (Yes I have auto-brightness set, and NO live wallpaper)
Anyone have some good input?
Maybe its a bad cord? Or bad USB port/connection on the phone it self...
Sent from my SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 4
62% screen usage is normal, I sometimes see over 70% with my brightness all the way up.
Make sure apps aren't keeping it from going idle and staying active.
Battery temp. seems a bit high. General causes of that are a faulty cable.
Download greenify and hibernate any apps that may be running unnoticeably in the background.
If your kernel allows fast charging (disables access to phone storage while fast charging is on) enable it while charging if you're not using the phone.
Play with CPU and GPU governors in your kernel to save battery life. I.E: I put my CPU governor on "powersave" while idle and not using the phone for anything extensive.

Tried two other cords, but they just made it worse. They actually caused it to look like its charging but the battery level was going down.
Your second suggestion is probably right, but i'd like to exhaust my options first before having to restore and send to creator. I do find that with the stock cable and no external case on it stays plugged in well and doesn't make any "interrupted connection" noises.
With stock charger and cable and minimal functions running its charging about 1% every 4 minutes. ( Approx 6.5 hrs to full charge )
I feel like the hardware must be working in order to do that, and that the software is putting some kind of excessive strain on it. Possibly?
The battery use still shows, screen as the major contributor at 61% , so I switched from a really high resolution static background to a low res one. ( results to follow)
Downloading WanamLite now and going to try that out, also going to try performing the unlock procedure I did in reverse order and see what that does. Keep you posted. Open to suggestions.

Thanks for the advise, I'm running greenify and its really only showing facebook and my sms app, I hibernated facebook anyways just to test it, but I know out of the box , on a car adapter this thing was charging 1%/min , maybe I have a bad ROM/Kernel mix?

Doubt it, but maybe you can try going from touchwiz to aosp. Very much more lightweight, though you'll lose some s4 features. If it is faulty hardware/battery I'd just save yourself the trouble and swap it for a new one; or try another battery. I guess you can try doing a compete wipe and flashing a fresh ROM with a kernel you know will definitely run smooth with it.

Already tried the second battery, no luck. Any suggestion on the rom/kernel combo?
I use task650 with kt's kernel and it's excellent. Though it's all opinion, there is many great combinations. Some ROMs come packaged with their own kernel or a custom one.

IMO: those temps are pretty normal.
Why you don't try a bone stock rom and see how it respond for a few hours, if the stock rom behaves the same, probably you will need to send it for warranty.
