Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 First impression. - Galaxy Tab General

The good:
-Screen quality looks good.
-Build feels solid.
- its quite thin.
The bad:
-No micro SDHC slot. >_<
I got a 16gb thinking it had it and that would add the 32bit card i had laying around ... Not happening. So this unit might go back in favor for a 32 gb model.
-To me, it feels a bit big. So, I might be looking at the 7.7 when it releases.
- hmm... Its a bit too thin.
Touchwiz -
I wonder if there is a way to get rid of it and run stock honeycomb. or at least speed up the animations from default settings.
Besides, that, its looking great.

Update of first day use.
I noticed some stutter when swiping side to side and going through menus... Sometimes it felt sluggish.
So, I got rid of that touchwiz... I replaced it with ADWlauncher EX.
(No GoLauncher EX for this - i cant find it in market?)
The device feels unleashed now. Its really smooth and fast. (wallpaper is not aligned anymore but I will fix that later my self)
Its a WORLD of difference i tell you.

Anyone coming from a Nexus one?

Im selling my n1 for this and just wanna here some feedback on people that have had the nexus one and why the vibrant is the better choice for them....
Whats better you noticed?
What do you miss?
Any similarities?

You havea vibrant?
I just got a Samsung a hour ago.. I have a Nexus One now with 2.2 on it.
After 1 hour.. My review..
The usb charging port for the Samsung is on the top of the phone.. Stupid because when you use it in the car the cable needs to reach the top and loop around..
It has 16GB internal and comes with a 2GB microSD card..
It does not seem any faster than the Nexus One, and the Nexus one has the roller ball which I actually use and the Samsung has no hardware buttons on the front..
Camera seems the same, pictures look close to me..
I am suprised how much better the bigger screen looks, I did not think it would be noticable but everything just looks better bigger!!!..
ONE REALLY big thing though... The antenna on the Samsung works better somehow. The Nexus One has never been 3G at my office and the Samsung has full bars on 3G. The Nexus One is showing 3 bars on Edge.. ( I flashed a few days ago to the 2.2 radio, same signal before flash)
So, after 1 hour the I am not sure which is better.. My N1 is pretty beat up and 7 months old (got it jan 5th) but I need 2.2 on the Samsung to actually like using it..
ALSO, the charging port on the top is retarded!!!

Sweet. Thanks for that. Yea power on top sounds weird... awesome reception sounds like...
Also do you know where the antenna is on the vibrant.. top or bottom? Thanks...
I believe if i were to get this phone i would have better 3G because of the N1 antenna woes. But i dont think getting this phone is worth the jump but i will convince my brother to ditch is BB for this
Me! I love it! It feels smaller, screen is way better, it is super snappy, and touchcwiz is actually way better than I thought it would be. 3d gallery is now like butter, love it! Market wont download anything yet though, fails everytime. Sucks, but other than that... also, I am itching to uninstall bloat on it, grr

This may not be a bad thing for everyone though. Would actually work well for me since it stays in my cupholder and I just use BT. Granted, with my G1, it's upside down but CM's orientation hack makes the screen right-side up (not sure if the Vibrant has that incorporated).
Otherwise, yes, the port on top is somewhat odd.
someone will come out with a 90 degree angled usb connection end - if there's not one out there already

I have been playing around with mine for about 3 hours now and i have to agreee with every thing you said and it is pretty much dead on. My reception to is better on the vibrant than the N1 don't know why it just is. I will hold onto my N1 before selling it and play with the SV more to get a "feel" for it
I wish they would have given you a better way to take a picture or activate the shutter, and I wish there was a better way to "wake" the phone up instead of the side button or a double click of the side button.
Also I wanted to comment on the build of the phone I don't think the weight of this phone gives it a "cheap" feel to it I prefer how light it is compared to my N1 and it feels good in my hand.
Just my .02

Had my N1 since Jan 5th as well and have LOVED it. Rooted immediately, ran Modaco's Desire Sense port for a while before moving back to CM. Got my Vibrant Monday (yes, really). Rooted Tuesday. Ran Modaco's script to rearrange the internal memory / apps configuration and made the Vibrant go from fast to BLAZING. TouchWiz not bad, but not overly impressed with Samsung's widgets. Some are good, some are a little finicky. Sense nailed widgets much better but Samsung's are decent and better than nothing.
Comparatively, N1 was snappier out of the box as no UI overlay. However with some modding this phone will be on par or perhaps outperform N1 (I say that sensitively as N1 has an extremely special place in my heart . Samsung's Hummingbird processor is phenomenal and outperforms N1 on side-by-side 3d rendering test (YouTube Nexus 1 Galaxy S Quake to see). Vibrant's SuperAmoled Screen is what makes this phone truly special-- it's nothing short of incredible and makes N1's screen seem small and dim in comparison. ESPECIALLY in sunlight- N1 was basically unusable, this thing is nearly un-impacted. Watch the preloaded Avatar on it-- it's just gorgeous. The size and weight are beautiful, the super-light weight does make it almost feel a hair toy-ish but as soon as you touch the silky-smooth screen that feeling disappears. I really was looking for a step up in screen size from N1 and this delivers without the almost-too-big feeling of Evo or HD2.
Cons- miss the trackball for precise in-text navigation and notification alerts. But there's already talk of a mod to flash the capacitive buttons on the bottom for notifications- this will help, especially as there's no LED or anything else to visually alert for notifications. . As previously mentioned, side-mounted lock / unlock button is kind of annoying and will take some getting used to. You can only partially customize TouchWiz's bottom static shortcut dock. Of course, installing ADW Launcher or Launcher Pro will solve that and completely hide TouchWiz but you then lose ability to use Samsung's proprietary widgets, again some of which are actually nice. Also, TouchWiz's unlock on screen method is AWFUL- just a big rectangular movement of the entire screen. Boring and ugly. But you can eliminate lock screen all together with free Market app called No Lock (go figure lol).
All in all, a screen that is definitely a contender for top in the market; all-around outstanding hardware that will take a bit of getting used to from N1; stock software that has improved; modding will make this device a fire-breathing lightning monster (lol).
Love it and highly recommend!!!!!!!!

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I just traded in my Nexus One yesterday and figured I'd revive this instead of starting a new thread. Had it for a full day, and here's what I think about it so far. (I will try to revive this at a month in, then six months in, then a year in if I keep it that long.)
+ It's much lighter, but very plasticky. I loved the aluminum and heft of the N1, but all of the plastic is made up in spades by it's sleek, smooth design. It's a beautiful device.
+ 3G on the Vibrant is much more consistent than it ever was with the N1.
- I really miss my LED notifications. NoLED is alright, but not as dependable. (It doesn't work with Go SMS popups.)
+ The screen is AWESOME. It's much brighter and more color-accurate, though not by a terrible amount. I absolutely love the size of it.
+ 16GB...internal storage!!! I can not only fit all of my music without a SD card, but can fit my ENTIRE LIBRARY with ANOTHER 16GB card! AMAZING!
+ It's a really fast phone.
+ It's a really fast phone.
+ With Nero 4.1/Voodoo, it's a really fast phone.
+ Multitouch actually works well, since I can use Swype like a normal keyboard and rotate on Google Maps (which is FRIGGIN SWEET)
- No flash is a bit of a letdown.
+ Camera makes up for it; it's quite good. Haven't tried recording with it yet, though.
- GPS is a BIG letdown, though triangulation is getting me by.
+ I thought I would hate Touchwiz, and I found out I (sort of) do. I hate the launcher, but it's apps are REALLY good. For example,
+ The music app is solid, and has an equalizer!
+ Alarm app is full-featured (has a timer, stopwatch, etc.)
+ Daily briefing could be useful
+ Desk mode is nice
+ Galaxy Tab email is really nice, though it doesn't provide any better features over the stock email app.
The one disadvantage...
- Wow, there is Engrish EVERYWHERE
- Proprietary drivers suck, but that's tolerable
- Not as straightforward to unlock at the firmware level, but that's tolerable too.
- Will be last to get official updates, but most of us run rooted/modified stuff, so that point is moot. A Gingerbread port is in the works and there are plenty of great Froyo ROMs for the device right now. (Nero 4.1 is froyo-based, and there is an unofficial, "stock" Froyo-based ROM floating around that I put on my Dad's Vibrant. He loves it, no issues so far.)
Final word (at this point): Highly recommend. I absolutely loved my Nexus One, as it was easily the best phone I've ever owned. However, this and the Nexus S (for the Google support the Nexus One enjoys) are clearly superior devices.

I got mine and Im happy with it thread!

I read a lot on this forum but dont post much. I havent seen a lot of positive things about the the new Tab. I just have to say I am very happy with my purchase so far. I was able to walk into my local Best Buy after 6pm on launch day and pick up a white 32GB. Funny thing is the Website stated they had 3 white and 4 black 32GB and when I got there they said all they had was the black. To make a long story short the Best Buy employee actually had to open the box and look at the Tab itself to tell if it was white or black. Apparently there is no way to tell on the outside of the box(I would assume the model number would). Anyways, I have owned the Xoom,Iconia and the Playbook and none of them hold a candle to this. Honeycomb does have a long way to go, however I do think this is a giant step foward in the right direction.
Please leave your experience so far if you are happy
never had a tablet before so nothing to compare it to, but so far I really dig it!
Ill join you on the happy part. Ive had my tab since Tuesday and I'm loving it. I haven't run into any of the issues that have been posted in some of the other threads. I'm in love with the fluu blown multitasking. I can easily jump app to app without loosing a spot. Perfect for those copy and paste situations.
Some of my favorite apps...
News360/Pulse
Native YouTube app
Thumb keyboard (must have)
PlayOn (yay hulu and Netflix)
Weatherbug for tablets
Grooveip

I just got mine today, too. White, 16GB
I asked for a Grey 32GB one, but they had none. I still wanted a Grey one, but even though they had it in stock, they gave me a white one, and I didn't notice till I got home. They even ran out of keyboard docks too. Oh well, I'm stuck with this one now.
After a few hours of use, I started to wonder about all the negative posts and reviews on XDA and everywhere else. I do notice certain points, like how browser lags when typing, but it seemed minor to me since I noticed that the key presses still recognized, and I was surprisingly accurate and fast using it, despite this being the first tablet I've ever owned.
Games are pretty and crisp. I've only experienced some minor lag in Plants vs. Zombies at the end of each stage, otherwise it played well.
A great experience so far.
i am happy with the tab but honeycomb needs some work.
I've had mine since *** yesterday *** and am happy with it. The one thing that I wish I could do is color calibrate the screen. While the bright, cartoonish color is liked by many, I would like to be able to calibrate the screen for more accurate color to display photos and play the videos that I shoot. Even with my 32GB unit, I am missing the microSD slot that I have on the Nook Color.
I'm very happy with mine. Sure, it has some issues, but nothing too bad and I believe most of them will be fixed by software updates in the future.
It's rather obvious, but all big smiles here too
Just to state a few, easy to the eye and ears(quality build, screen, speakers), easy to carry and hold(super light, thin, with textured back), responsive, fast and versatile OS (widgets thrive, google apps reign, multimedia a beauty to run, even if it currently has a few glitches like lag in typing in certain websites boxes).
Just loving it!
I'm loving it so far. Honeycomb does have some issues to work out.
One thing that is truly bothering me is the lack of quick controls in the browser.
The official accessories not being available is also annoying.
But man o man I'm loving the hardware ,the screen ,and the form factor.
I have a 16 grey and I'm very pleased with my purchase. At the time I wanted a 32 but best buy had none in stock. I also have an unlocked version so I'm scared to return it can't wait for some custom kernels to fix some lag this thing has. Other then that I am very pleased. Honeycomb does need work. Hopefully the touchwiz update fixes some lag. I no it usually just bloats the system but this version seems nice! A few software kinks but love it! Can't wait for ICS (open source) that should fix pretty much everything for ow though very happy

This tablet will essentially replace my phone for in house usage. Loving it so far, only wish the app support was better.
I'm digging it. I sincerely hope with the 5k that were given to devs we'll get more support!
I'm very pleased with this tablet. It feels much nicer to hold than my previous tablet.
Can someone with a 16GB tell me what their total space available is showing? Mine's at 13GB. I could have swore it was 14.2GB or somewhere around there.
I'm also very happy with mine, I actually have no problems with Honeycomb itself -- but more apps need to support it. Thumb Keyboard + News360 + Flash 10.3 + Dolphin HD + YouTube + Samurai II = my Sunday.
I just got it! By a coincidence it arrived the same day as the iPad2 I bought for my uncle, and I did a comparison side by side. Although I am used to iOS (I have an iPhone), I immediately felt honeycomb as more flexible, out of the box, than iOS. As for Aesthetic, I can say that the GT feels much lighter than the iPad, I can handle it better.
In few words: I am really happy, so far.
I've had mine since Friday. I love the look and feel of the GT. It looks and feels much better than the Xoom, in my opinion (I had a Xoom for just under 2 weeks) and it's definitely lighter than the Xoom. I compared it to my gf's iPad 2 and it is a little bigger, but feels lighter. So I love this tablet.
I don't love the lack of tablet optimized apps or the lack of Netflix or Google Movies. Compared to the iPad it's definitely lacking in those areas, but the tablet itself and honeycomb are excellent.
I've had my LE I/O version for about a month now and absolutely love it. It's light, feels great in my hands, it's fast, I even love Honeycomb... Not sure why so many people complain about it. Hopefully over the next few months we'll start seeing more HC versions of apps.
edit: forgot to mention the battery life is freakin amazing. I can go 3-5 days with moderate usage and it won't die.
Got one from Amazon. So far happy with it. Need to look into how to root and OC the cpu.
The smartbench 2011 score is less than Viewsonic (OCed to 1.4Ghz).
Im absolutely in love with my tablet
Well, I have to admit that so far I ampretty in love with this tablet. The screen is amazing and the weight and thickness make this feel really nice in the hand. I am really enjoying honeycomb so far and do not see any problems so far. I was kinda worried about buying this but I am relieved. I also really love the look of it. I have the grey one and it looks really nice. So far I am a happy tablet owner

For Those Coming From A Galaxy S2...

So the Galaxy Nexus released in Canada today and I went to a local store to play with a live demo. Now am I just spoiled from using the I9100 (I imported one right when it was released), because although the Nexus felt generally smooth, my S2 feels so much faster in most aspects. I thoroughly played with it for 30 minutes and tested as many functions as I could.
This is disappointing because I felt Ice Cream and graphics acceleration would make this thing fly, even though the internals are inferior to the S2.
Now the reason I bring this up, is that from some perusing through these threads here, the Note is generally claimed to be slower than the S2 (as it has more pixels to push). I guess my S2 has spoiled me since anything else I use now feels sluggish, except of course for when I play with my buddy's iPhone 4S. So, my question to those coming from the S2 to a Note, how much slower is it and does it take a while to get used to it? Extra bonus points for those who have played with all three devices and can possibly rank them from fastest to slowest.
It just sucks that we don't have the Note in Canada so I can't really test the speed difference for myself
sgs2 has had tons of updates and development. Galaxy Note is a brand new device and have little development right now. It will speed up and with the great supercurio coming aboard we should see some new improvements. Give it a little tim e.
Even though I had a defective unit, it was just a fast as my sgs2. I really didnt experience any real lag until I tried go launcher.
Im coming from the sg1 to sg2 and now the note.
The sg2 blows the sgs out of the water and in my experiance is a fair bit smoother then the note. I use launcher pro and have a few widgets on screen, using the same widget setup as my gs2 its a bit slower.
But ive got more icons on screen on the note so it does test the sysyem a bit more, its noticably a little laggy in comparison. You have such a big hi res screen your bound to put more stuff on it.
Im sure if i set the screen for the same icon grid and made an exact comparison it would perform similar to the gs2.

After updating to the XXKK9 firmware the Gnote is much faster compared to the S2, everything else is better on the Gnote.
Opening apps is much quicker then the s2 the only slight lag I get is flicking between home screens. Doesn't bother me, I prefer having more stuff accessible to sacrifice a little UI smoothness.
I have the same XXKK9 firmware which i got via an ota update the day i powered my phone up first time. Its still all stock only been a couple our days for me.

Thanks for the input, everyone. Just a little nervous to drop $700+ on a device only to have it underperform to my expectations. First thing I will do is load KK9 then. The Note seems like the perfect device since it's basically a beefed up S2 which is my fav device of all-time, with a huge screen (something I've been looking for) and a stylus (so I can keep my gloves on through these harsh Canadian winters). Very excited, going to order it now!
I still feel Note is slightly slow than S2 while page flicking and scrolling (huge list like 700 contacts). My region hasn't upgraded to 2.3.6 and maybe it will go away. The satisfaction you get from large screen outweighs that minor hiccup.
My Note is still on KK1 (Kies reports this is the latest firmware available for my version of the phone). I first set up my Note just like my S2, with a lot of Widgetsoid widgets. The extra screen space provided space for like 45 widgets. It was laggy. I ditched all but about 5-6 Widgetsoid widgets (the larger screen allows enough Touchwiz icons for my purposes), and I stopped experiencing any lag. Subjectively, though, the S2 somehow seems a bit more responsive, even overly responsive because the screen is set to a more sensitive setting. But when I look at it objectively, I think there's no difference in lag between my S2 and my Note, now that I have a sane home screen.
A couple of the widgets I had been using have just been updated used with launcher pro now my note is running as smooth a the gs2.
I think with newer firmware and a bit of time for apps to update so they run better on high resolution screens this thing will be awesome.
The hardware is there it just needs the software to back it up and not hold it back.

Laggy tab anyone?

Hey all,
I pulled the trigger on the Tab 7.7 as a daily phone and tablet, which is great, I don't really mind the size.
BUT, I only have 3 home screens, with tons of widgets, and switching to the App drawer, or hitting the + next to App, and going from a running app to home screen is super laggy for me.
Anyone else?
I blame TouchWiz.
Yeah, I changed the launcher on mine, put SPB Shell 3D, and its a lot smoother, ADWLaunhcer EX, is great also
No Lag, Just Extremely Fast
I don't use Touch Wiz, I prefer Go Launcher EX.

Yeah basically. I use ADW EX. It is smoother than an iPad really. I tried SPB Shell 3D, but honestly, it can't even touch ADW EX.

That might be but it is much more evident in Honeycomb. If I run the same widgets on my Tab 7.7 than I did on my SGS2 its super laggy. My SGS2 did it no prob..

I think TW definitely adds to the lag but I have not worked on any Honeycomb tab (Acer, Asus Transformer, Zoom) that did not lag.
The Transformer Prime did a good job to get fairly responsive with minor lag but with Tegra3 you would expect it to be a lot smoother
And as early reviews indicate after the Prime was updated with ICS it is a lot more responsive.
Lets hope the tab 7.7 get ICS soon. At the rate Samsung is updating compared to other manufacturers now it looks like they will be last again..

Thanks for all the great responses. I think I'll try ADW, judging from what's happening now.
Yes, I agree too that a ton of widgets on normal phones doesn't really effect performance like it does on this Honeycomb.
I guess, a 3rd party launcher will have to do, whilst waiting for ICS.
I actually prefer TW to Go ex launcher. It is just personal preference though.
can you use exlauncher on this tab?
Im currently waiting for TSF Shell Pro to be released, should be soon I think.

Why does everybody think that quadcore is automatically faster than dualcore? That's rubbish and wrong and I bet that our 7.7 is -if at all - not more than 10% slower than the Prime.

Much agreed. Having played with a Prime in a store, and compared the 7.7 right next to it, honestly my 7.7 felt at least as fast, if not faster, than the prime, especially when web browsing. Scrolling and zooming on the 7.7 was consistently faster and smoother.

How is the experience on the 7.7? Is it like a big phone, or is the UI also optimized for a full tablet experience too?

Like a small tablet rather than a big phone. That's not always a good thing--some of the UI elements are a bit smaller than they should be. In comparison, Gingerbread on my 1st Gen Galaxy Tab makes it feel like a big phone at times, but the UI elements are nice and large.
Touchwiz is nice looking, but is a bit more laggy than Go Launcher Ex and ADW Launcher Ex. But neither of the latter two resolve all of the lag issues. I believe that the problem is really with Honeycomb.
Still, loving my 7.7. (Though I'm looking forward to loving it even more with Icecream Sandwich.)

Good to know! Thanks for the feedback
Currently using ADW EX personally, and to be honest, I'm kinda confused about this lag everyone keeps going on about...
I mean, ok, my homescreen may take half a second the re-draw the widgets when I come back to it from another application or whatever, but after that, it's lightning quick and buttery smooth! Seriously, side-by-side, my 7.7 has put an iPad 2 to shame in terms of quickness and smoothness...
I'm beginning to wonder if I got a different piece of hardware than everyone else here

You are welcome. I have some but not a lot of experience with the ipad so it's hard to compare. For all I know, it could just be unreasonable expectations on my own part.
BUT, there definitely are more small waits (usually no more than 1 sec) here and there, especially during transition events (redrawing the homescreen, shifting from one app to another, sometimes, even just calling up the app drawer from homescreen, from pressing the icon to the gmail/email app being ready for use). And I am comparing my experience with the 7.7 with Gingerbread running on both my 1 Gen Galaxy Tab and my HTC HD2. I think this says a lot considering that the 7.7 packs a much faster processor. Still, having said all that, I also feel that the device is very, very fast and smooth *in general*. Just not as *finished* as one might have been led to expect given the hardware.
After mucking around both Go and ADW, I decided to settle on Go for the moment. Though ADW feels marginally faster, I like Go's app drawer features better, and the ABlack theme icons.

I think it's probably unreasonable to expect that applications are loaded and available the instant you call them to attention, especially if they haven't been used in a while and their state isn't pre-cached. You're always going to have some kind of a delay there regardless. Also, Honeycomb addresses a completely different API layer for apps than Gingerbread does, so with more functionality and complexity, comes more loading time. This is to be expected. ICS should, however, streamline the whole caching, loading, and multitasking business overall once it's released for the 7.7
Perhaps the real issue here is a question of interpretation, and what we both consider to be "lag." From what I understand, you consider lag to be the time it takes for programs to load up and be usable, or the time it takes for them to be usable when switching between multiple apps. In this sense, yes, there is always a delay between apps, but nothing unexpected (in my opinion), and nothing which I would consider to be unacceptable. Being able to switch between multiple apps and never having to wait more than 1 second, at most, before being able to use them, is not something worth complaining about I think.
What I consider to be lag is more a question of generally how smooth and responsive the UI is overall. In this sense, I basically haven't encountered any lag at all, with perhaps the only exception being during the half or second or so it takes ADW EX to re-draw my homescreen. Aside from that, screen transitions are quick and smooth, web browsing is responsive and fluid, and all other aspects of navigating my 7.7 are quick and efficient.
So I tried Launcher Pro, ADW Launcher, Go Launcher (all free versions) and I found that pre-installed widgets like Buddy or other smaller widgets (not the clock/calender) look horrible. As if they are in the wrong resolution.
Does ADW EX fix that?
Which launcher have you guys found to be fast, whilst keeping close to the original Honeycomb experience.
To whoever was asking, no this doesn't feel like a big phone, it feels like a small tablet which has the ability to make calls.
I still get ridiculed from time-to-time when answering the phone at lunch because I choose not to trouble myself with a bluetooth.
But the best thing is, I don't need to carry a phone and a tablet around now.

That sounds eminently reasonable Indeed, as long as the app is up and running, then the UI is generally very smooth and responsive.
But now I'm curious--earlier, you said "Seriously, side-by-side, my 7.7 has put an iPad 2 to shame in terms of quickness and smoothness..." So it is your experience that the ipad 2 is actually more laggy compared to the 7.7 in the sense as defined? (I'm a little surprised.)

I suppose I should be specific here. As popular as it is, the iPad 2 is not the holy grail of perfection that everyone may think it is. Quite to the contrary in fact. It just so happens that Apple is very good at either outright hiding or distract in the user from any would-be imperfections. See, Apple would rather NOT push the boundaries of the hardware capabilities for the sake of forcing a more consistence experience.
I have never owned, nor would I, any Apple product, period... ever. So, my experiences with the iPad 2 have been limited to display devices in retail location and hands-on time with any of the ones owned by family members.
Some examples of where I would consider my 7.7 to be either faster, smoother, or generally better than the iPad 2 would include:
Homescreen UI:
ADW EX vs iOS
I love ADW EX on the tablet. It's simple, it's customizable, and it's FAST!! It also happens to be hardware accelerated, which helps with the points I just mentioned. Why do I feel this beats the pants off of iOS's homescreen? Simple. It manages to consistently pump out 60 frames a second, making screen transitions and finger response smooth as silk.
"So what? iOS does that too on the iPad 2."
Yeah, but my 7.7 running ADW EX manages 60 fps all while running active widgets, live background, and 3D transition effects between screens. All iOS is doing is moving a bunch of icons from page to page in front of a static background. Not hard to do really, so the 60 fps figure doesn't impress me that much. Besides, if all we're doing is moving application icons across the screen at 60 frames a second, my ADW EX app drawer does that too...
This bring up my earlier point about how Apple won't push the boundaries. It's entirely possible that Android running on the iPad 2 would not yield the same quality experience.
Either way, win for 7.7!
Angry birds:
I know, this seems like a strange category, but seeing as it's the only cross-platform game I have played on both devices, it's all I have to go on.
Anyway, the Android version of Angry Birds on my 7.7 runs very smoothly at 60 frames a second, whereas the iOS version of Angry Brids on the iPad 2 seems to run at a much lower framerate for some reason. It may not me noticeable on its own, but comparing the two side by side, the difference is night and day. The iPad version appears very choppy next to my 7.7. It remains consistent, and thus it's still very playable, but my 7.7 not only is equally consistent, but at a smoother higher framerate, it is more enjoyable.
Web browsing:
Now, here's the category which I have to say is the closest one to call personally.
For starters, I should point out that I use Dolphin Browser for pad (beta) on my 7.7 instead of the stock browser. I generally prefer its interface, and it's a shame that the Dolphin team hasn't continued to develop this tablet specific version of their browser.
Anyway, getting back on track here, assuming that the desktop agent is being used on both devices (so that they both go to the desktop versions of the same websites), performance may vary depending on where you're going. The iPad will manage to best the 7.7 in terms of consistency in its performance no matter where you go. Scrolling and zooming will be consistently responsive and smooth. This may not always be the case with the 7.7, especially on the YouTube home page. But that is about the only place I have experienced any kind of slowdown.
On my 7.7, for the most part (with only the occasional slowdown), my browsing experience remains at least as smooth as what I have seen on any iPad, and that's just while it's doing the same level of Java and HTML5 that the iPad does. Add to that by enabling Flash content, while playing a 1080p video on the same web page, and still the 7.7 doesn't miss a beat!? Then you really start to realize what a monster this thing is...
Win for 7.7 again!
P.S. My 7.7 has been consistently scoring 111,000 and above in browsermark. Yeah, it's a beast.

SOLD my Galaxy S2, bought an Iphone 4S and now getting a NOTE

Loved the SGS2, had it ages, thought I would try the dreaded FruityPhone, lasted about a week, now getting a NOTE end of today...
What will I notice between the SGS 2 and the NOTE, I'm hoping for the usability of the SGS2, the screen resolution of the Iphone 4S
I have all three of the phones you mentioned. To see which one I use 99.9% of the time please see my signature.

The screen on the note is awesome. Once you spend a day with it you'll never want another phone.
By the way.... an S2 to an Iphone 4s?? why downgrade that much?? lol
I had an sgs2 also and upgraded to the note just because of the screen, its really superb.
Overall the note is an sgs2 on steroids imo, bigger stronger faster + the S-pen apps are not bad at all.
Biggest difference you'll find is screen size. Had the sgs2 and loved it, especially in white:-D I saw the Note and had to have it. Once you're used to the size of it, you'll wonder how you actually used the sgs2. The 4s, well, my ipod touch has the same screen size and man is it small! Enjoy your Note. I am;-)

Right had my NOTE a few days now...
First thing the Screen is absolutely superb, GPS fixes faster and more accurately than my SGS2 ever did, the sound quality seems better and you do start to get used to the size...Battery life seems pretty good but then so it should with a 2500 battery inside.
But if feels sluggish compared to my SGS2 on a standard GB rom, almost feel like its in slow motion, sometimes even laggy, tried lets golf 3 from the market, on my old SGS2 is was slick smooth and frame rate was a joy, on the Note its a little jerky and laggy, the S-Pen is superb, but seems ever so slightly off calibration, I cant find any way to calibrate it in the system settings, thinking about Rooting and flashing some custom roms or even the ICS that's not ready kia Kies yet, but it all seems amazingly more complex than the SGS2 ever did...

If I remember correctly, there is a way to help with the pen....Someone else can confirm if I'm right, but I think in Pen settings change from left dominant to right dominant and then back again(to whichever your preference is) it should help with the S-pen calibration...
What a blooming donut i am, when i first got the note i installed spare parts. Something i always used to do on the sgs2, to speed up the transitions etc...but i must have set it to very slow by accident, no wonder things seemed slow and ponderous...tried the setting for the pen left to right handed, seems slightly better thanks for that, let's golf is still a little slow, but all games simply look stunning on this screen
