Hi.
Got my Shift back from service after almost 2 month of waiting. (HDD died)
They havent installed the HDD with the factory recovery partition, as they where waiting for the SW from HTC.
So i just ordered it back as is.
Can somebody explain how to setup the correct partitions as they are by default.
Either with Fdisk or any other program on HirensBootDisk or by using Slax as i already have these at hand.
I'm quite unsure what values to put in, what to set active and what not.
I have a copy of the Vista recovery from deadnex, so ill put that on later.
Thanks
Ps. the HDD came with some weird partition sizes??
Same query if replace the HDD how to restore the factory recovery partition
Could someone please answer the following :
C: 36,25GB, Primary Partition, Active, NTFS (what is your exact size in MB??)
D: 3GB, Primary Partition, FAT 32 (What is your exact size in MB??)
What is your setup from factory?
if u dont mean the hidden one with " d:", i just have one partition
c: ntfs 36.774.174.720 Bytes 34,2 GB Saying File explorer
Device manager: 35072 MB
Hi nobody.
Yes i mean the hidden recovery partition with d:
[Tutorial] How to part your micro SD card into ext4 using GParted Live CD?
Disclaimer: I am not responsible for dead micro SD. Please do it at your own risk
Hello All,
Please find the below tutorial to part your micro SD card into ext4.
Required:
• Micro SD card
• Card Reader/Micro SD card Adaptor (Make sure drivers are already installed)
• GParted live CD (Download: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php)
• Image Burner Software
• Another computer or screenshot to read this tutorial as you cannot use your computer while partition
• Take backup of all your data in your SD card.
Ok that’s all…. Let’s start now.
• Burn the downloaded GParted live (GPL) CD using any image burner (I used Roxio to burn image) to CD
• Once completed, insert your card reader/MSD Adaptor and check drivers installed. (Don’t remove your card reader/MSD Adaptor)
• Insert GPL CD (burned CD) and reboot your PC and get into boot mode F12 in W7.
• Now you will see GPL boot screen. Select GPL default. (Some codes will be appearing for few mins)
• Then a small screen will appear (Configuring console data). Hit escape and see below to select language. Enter 33 for US English and Enter 0 (Continue to start X to use GP automatically)
• New screen will appear. See right corner of the box to select your memory card (Very important step: make sure you haven’t selected your PC’s hard disk)
• Now you will see your memory card in the middle of the screen with the total memory and partition (if any). Right click and delete the existing format for all partitions.
• Now you will see the entire memory card space as unallocated. Right click and select new (New box will open) Select as below mentioned.
Create as “Primary Partition”
File System “Fat32”
Free Space following (MIB) XXXX (This free space will be your ext4 allocate accordingly) E.g. ext 4 required 2GB then enter 2048MB
• Now GPL will throw you back to main screen. Right click on unallocated space and select new.
Create as “Primary Partition”
File System “ext4”
• Select “Apply” in main screen. Wait for few mins.
Congratulations!!!! You have successfully parted your SD card.
Is it the same as partitioning thru CWM4? If we partition via CWM4 the result is EXT4, A2sd can run with it. Why the long process? Just want a clarification is it really different?

Hi,
I tried doing partition using CWM4 which resulted in ext3 and not ext4. Hence I created this long process partition.
Just create a 2 partition using cwm then install link2sd from market . Using link2SD make a partition into ext 4
i think its more easy and safe to use minitool partition manager. no need to burn, boot livecd whatsoever.. and gparted livecd can become a dangerous tool in wrong hands. linux livecd is not something to be played around just to partition sdcard. just a simple wrong click and ur windows partition would be trashed.
Just a little advise.. if you really want to use gparted better you do that in linux enviroment such as ubuntu etc..but if you are windows user then use mini partision home 6..its more easy n safe..Cmiiw

Hi,
I would suggest atleast 512MB as ext4.
thanks, and this partition is for what, so make like an extre space for the phone?

Why not partition it using CWM recovery..??
It's much easier and faster

I also got the same problem.
Seems like miniTool is messing up..
I partitioned my 8GB sd card to 600MB ext4 and the rest FAT32.
But now not only the phone but even gparted(live usb/from linux) also cannot see ext4 partition.
I can only see it as 7.4 MB....
Not sure what exactly happened.
Edit: working now. after delete & partition again.

i dont each and every thing as above but after that i stuck, there is just Black screen unblinking curser on left top corner. i tried 3, 4 time but same result.

I follow this guidance for make partition on my sd card
http://androidandme.com/2009/08/news/how-to-manually-partition-your-sd-card-for-android-apps2sd/
it works for me. now I have:
512MB linux swap
1024MB ext4
6,5GB fat32
on my 8GB sd card
I have scoured and tried to no avail, so I called my mom and told her I was special (as per your awesome noob video), or possibly illiterate. I rooted my nc last week via the instructions I found here (TY!!) it works so great that my memory is full, so I downloaded apps2sd and link2sd and neither will let me transfer to my 16gb PNY sdhc, link2sd says it needs 2 primary partitions, I downloaded easeus, paragon partition manager, and sdk manager, none will let me create a new partition, I can delete, and create 1 partition only, I have tried through windows disk manager as well. I am running Vista 32bit, also have a laptop with XP SP2. Sorry if this question is stupid, any help is greatly appreciated!!
You have to shrink the partition already on there and then make another from the unused space.

ok I went back to windows disk management and shrink is greyed out, so I tried paragon and got this message when I tried to resize:
Basic MBR Hard Disk 1 (Lexar RW047SDHC Reader USB Device) - Removable
Wizard could not find any adjacent partitions to work with on this hard drive. Note, hard drive must contain at least a pair of partitions that are located next to each other (two primary and/or two logical) to perform resize between.
Thank You Again!
Try using Easeus.

I just checked EaseUs and it seems to work. You can re-size the existing to a smaller one and then create a new one with what is left over.
Most definitely helpful. Thanks!

Sorry it took so long to get back,
Thank you for your replies, are you using the free version of easeus? on mine I have the re-size option for my hard drive but when i select the sd card it disappears
I think you have to right click the partition to see all the options. Is that what you are doing?

I just tried right clicking and still no resize for my sd, I can (copy partition, change label, change drive letter, check-hide-format-explore partition, and view properties). I'm wondering if I perhaps messed up the sd card, it seems to be functional I can add/retrieve data from it and speed up my system. maybe the wrong file system? it is fat32 and says it has a 14.91 GB capacity. I'm generally pretty good with technology, rooting my nook was a breeze, but this is starting to make me feel pretty dumb!
Hmm, backup your sd card onto your pc abd then format the card in the nook and try again. Also make sure you are running easeus as admin.

well looks like I'm about 50% there! using mini-tool partition wizard I managed to shrink the original partition down to 6.99 GB, but it wouldn't allow me to add another, it said I had to delete the first partition if I wanted to create multiple partitions, so I did but then when I tried to create the new partitions there was no option to create multiples so I ended up right where I started, so once again I shrank the partition and opened easeus and it keeps telling me I've successfully created the 2nd partitions but is still showing up as unallocated space and my nook wants to format it, won't let me do anything else with it, so I let it and tried again, but still nothing. Is it possible this cannot be done with a 16 GB card? I didn't think size really mattered with this kind of thing it should still be the same operation as a smaller card right?
Do you know of a program like link2sd or app2sd, that doesn't require a 2nd partition? I'm starting to think this is an unfixable user error!
"Triple Boot the Nook Color with Stock, CM7 and CM
So far, I just tried to make sure that NC is booting all three with no problems. I been reading about extending partitions for a long time only to find that directions to fix problems is almost like mine but not quite.
Another post says to just extend the 7th partition. With Easeus, there isn't a partition labeled "sdcard" and only have 6 partitions. The only name is the letter assigned to the sd card. I have 32 gb of which has 1 fat32, 2 primary partitions, 3 logical partitions which the last is 29.82 gb unallocated partition. In windows 7 disk management shows I have 7 partitions one of which is 1.28 gb free space and 27.92 unallocated. Also should I expand the fat32 partition (boot) for some apps. that would work better there instead of storage partition.
I had this same question. I found that there were only six partitions, I think. I think you want the 1+ gb one. For me it was the partition right next to the unused part of the SD card. I just clicked on the slider bar and extended the partition to the right as far as it could go.
Then be sure to click on the apply button at the top left of the screen.
I hope this has been somewhat helpful. I just did my sd card today. Post if you need more help.
Sent from my NookColor using xda premium
which application did you use. Windows disk management or Easeus. When you mentioned 1.gb, that only showed up in windows, there were 7 partitions. in Easeus there's only six. So I extend the 5th partition which is next to unallocated space? Thanks btw for answer my first question.
Hi, I have a Nook Simple Touch device with a traditional problem of improper backup of 76 MB before rooting.
Now I have managed to retrieve files from the /rom partition (/devconf folder with 20 files like serial no, public key etc.) - I have them in my laptop as regular files as well as 16 MB partition image on SD card.
Would anybody be so kind to offer a full recovery method? I believe backup of somebody's full image and then overwriting the /rom partition would revive the device?
How much of your partition table is left, if any, and how familiar are you with linux?
Were it me, I might have a go at creating just the first partition - boot from noogie, connect to a linux box, and use fdisk to create the partition.
I'd then try doing a
dd if=single.partition.backup.img of=/dev/mmcblk0p1
(writing my boot backup to the partition I just created) and see if that file wasn't enough to bootstrap the other partitions. Depending on how you created the backup, you may have the boot flag set and the partition table stored; so long as you haven't actually put data on the other partitions yet, it may be possible to at least trigger the onboard restore.
These are values that work on the glow, and I believe on the touch as well:
Disk /dev/block/mmcblk0: 2000 MB, 2000683008 bytes
128 heads, 32 sectors/track, 954 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 4096 * 512 = 2097152 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/block/mmcblk0p1 * 1 38 77808 c Win95 FAT32 (LB
A)
Of the partitions, I still have:
- boot (I believe it is somewhat corrupted, but this I can restore from the backup)
- NOOK (FAT32) - should be OK, I see files in it;
- cache (Ext3)
- data (Ext3) - seems to be corrupted
Missing: factory (Ext2); one untitled partition and one unallocated segment.
Backup was created with Roadkil's DiskImage, with a source being the locigal drive (original boot partition).
I'm not good at Linux, but I know how to create partitions using Windows tools.
OK, I can try to recreate the boot partition and the rom partition, and restore the backup to it, then I'll see what happens.
Disk configuration for NST is different from the NSTG:
Cylinters: 238 Heads: 255 Sectors: 63
Nook is resurected!
Yes, I have managed to revive the Nook Simple Touch who had survived deletion of all partitions and restore of just the boot partition!
You will need for this:
- an micro SD card and card reader;
- Noogie;
- Minitool Partition Wizard (or other partition management software, if you like and it can do partition recovery and copying);
- ClockworkMod (sd_2gb_clockwork-rc2.zip)
- Alpha-FormatTouch-2.zip - to be copied onto ClockworkMod SD card;
The principle is this:
- first of all, do a PROPER backup of your device - backup ENTIRE PHYSICAL DISK (2 GB) into the image file.
- Using Minitool Partition Wizard, do a partition recovery operation - you should find all your deleted partitions - but do not apply changes yet!. However, due to improper restore of logical disk to a physical disk, the disk config info probably became corrupted and disk size appears to be 78MB, so you won't be able really restore the partitions. So, using Minitool Partition Wizard, do a copy of the recovered partitions one by one onto the SD card - and start with the most important rom partition. From Partion Wizard, you should be able, using Explore function, to check if the partition has all necessary files (20) like serial no, public key, mac address etc.
- from SD card, you can create a backup image of each partition on your hard disk.
- after you have copies of all necessary partitions (boot, rom, nook are vital; others are optional), you need to do a wipe on the NOOK disk to delete all partitions and the disk to obtain the original size of 2 GB.
- on an empty disk after wipe, you have to restore the partitions in the order:
1. restore, by copying using Minitool Partition Wizard, the boot partition (78 MB, FAT32, Primary, set it Active)
2. restore, by copying using Minitool Partition Wizard, the rom partition (16 MB, FAT32, Primary)
3. create manually new partition factory (190 MB, Ext2, Primary)
4. create manually new partition (no label) (288 MB, Ext2, Logical)
5. copy from backup partition NOOK (240 MB, FAT32, Logical)
6. create manually new partition cache (Ext3, 240 MB, Logical)
7. create manually new partition data (Ext3, 801 MB, Logical).
Then, boot the Nook from ClockWorkMod SD card, and format /system, /cache, /data partitions;
afterwards, install from zip card - Alpha-FormatTouch-2.zip.
And, hopefully, your Nook will be alive again!
(Now, I'm sure, you won't forget to do a proper backup of your working Nook :fingers-crossed
Yes, you save my nook. Thanks to your method i could revived my /rom.
but all is not done for me . i have a UK NST Glow and the glow is not working. I would like to update to firmware1.2 and may be this glow will function again. But When i plug the usb, windows cann see the drive but i don't have access to it. i have the message "please insert disc in F: drive"
wow wow wow . At last i successed to update to FW 1.2 for my almost bricked UK NSTGL. Now i have a US NSTGL but nevermind. now time to backup correctly.
but i'm not sure your method is fully working. I had to make a partition table with renater script "nookparted.sh" and then use roustabout's comment "dd if=boot.img of=....". and after that i put update 1.2.
In one week i have learn so much with my broken backup.
Hello, new here so hope it's ok to hijack this thread slightly, seems the original issue has been solved and I think my problem is similar although I'm way out of my depth here... I've managed to brick my nook, and although I took a backup which is AFAIK correctly sized 1.86gb I can't restore it. I've tried putting noogie and cmw on the sd card but it's refusing to boot, I suspect I nonced the partition table up and can't even get the nook to register when I plug it in to the PC now. I suspect is obvious I'm a dumb noob but if anyone could help point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated
welcome to the brave new world of the "bricked forever" and endless nights.
Nobody blames you since everybody and their mothers seem to fall into the trap even if they are told to make a good backup.
i had read so much threads to resurect my nook that i don't exactly know how i made it through, but here are some indications:
Here are the objectives:
1) make a correct backup of your bricked nook: -> you can make after all stupid commands and you 'll come back to this point.
2) you'll have to resurect your /rom or your rombackup.zip (inside factory).
3) have the correct partition of your nook
4) reinstall the rom
for 2) this thread gives a way to get back your /rom. read carefully even roustabout's comment can really help
for 3) thanks to Renate NST in this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1805936&highlight=to+stock and her script "nookpart.sh" i could have a correct size for my partition. (method with wizard partition gives wrong cylinders alignement). read all of this thread it is really rich.
for 4) if you reach that point that should be easy.
Thanks for the welcome and the reply jjinkou2.
I'm guessing I need to work on the nook through a PC. I've currently got 2 PCs, one running window 7 and one on vista, I'm mainly working on the W7 machine. When I plug the nook in to it, a device briefly shows up as the h: drive in My computer but then immediately disappears and so I can't actually access it yet. I note that roustabout mentions working in Linux, if I had a Linux machine available would it be easier to get it to recognize the nook?
Edit: Just tried plugging the nook into my vista machine (which it has not been used on before) and the Found New Hardware window briefly pops up but then vanishes and I get a message on the taskbar: Device driver software was not successfully installed - OMAO3630 Device unplugged. Is there a fix for this pelase?
Some easy instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/BN_Nook_Simple_Touch/Installing_ADB
you'll need to install android sdk and check usb install in the extra.
Search for a file named "ADB + Fastboot + Drivers.zip" in the forum to easily have the adb.
With windows the usbdriver can be tricky to install. i had to use usbdview (look for it in google) and uninstall all B&N mass storage and OMAP3630.
The driver for usb inside the previous zip might not work also. i found one in the forum but can't find it right now.
Edit
found the usb driver that worked for me

Excellent, thanks very much! Not entirely sure how I managed it but I managed to get to a point where I could use the method shown by budriunas and my nook is now working again, albeit with an older firmware and the glow light isn't working but at least it's not bricked! Now just to get the light working and then root the damn thing without killing it....

how did you do a partition table?? i have run nookpart.sh but i still get the problem : "When i plug the usb, windows cann see the drive but i don't have access to it. i have the message "please insert disc in F: drive"
nookpart.sh will partition the internal memory exactly like it was.
This is important if you actually still have valid data but the partition table was destroyed.
If partitions are not looking correctly they may need to be formatted.
Don't be too quick to repartition/reformat until you know what the situation is.
i have used nookpart.sh but still no good, here is the result when i execute nookpart.sh. Everything works except internal storage not mounted correctly i think, i want to update to 1.2
