I get the error "Error mounting .android_secure" in CWM whenever I backup or restore a ROM. I actually can't restore my nandroid backup, and I don't know whether it's because of this or unrelated. So my question is 1) what's in .android_secure and 2) what could have caused this error so I avoid it in the future? I'll try making another backup soon to see if it was a one time thing or is a constant problem.
Im guessing its not backing up to the right folder. Try reinstalling cwm and your recovery. And if you arent already, install romracers recovery.

Yea mine shows up empty too, but the naming makes me want to think something important goes there, lol.
And I'm using romracer's recovery.
That's where apps you move to the SD Card end up. And it looks empty, but it isn't, it just uses a neat trick to look like empty

And I think I know the problem. After flashing the CM7 beta, instead of sdcard being where my internal SD is mounted, CM7 uses emmc. So I think in CWM it should be looking for /emmc and /emmc/.android_secure. I don't really know how to fix that, but if it's just apps that are moved to the sdcard I don't really care. I don't use that.

I just recently got the MyTouch4G, got it permrooted and did a full back up of my sd card to my pc, but it's still on stock rom. I want to flash cyanogen7 but there's a lot of junk on the sd card first
My question is if it is okay to do a full format and if so, any advice on important folders or files I should copy back after the format, apart from the clockwork folder (i know that one is important)

Well do as I do just create a dir called Files and inside it make sub dir's and put all stuff you want in it like aduio, video, photo, ect. Also dont worry about the other folders in your root /sdcard. Far as format goes as you backed it up to your PC just format sdcard and if you missed something it will rebuild itself. Make sure you backed up video/photo whatever if you took any. Usually once you install something that requires you to place elements in the root of your sdcard after its complete always remove it this way you save yourself a lot of headaches later on. I always keep my dir nice and clean old habit of *nix world

Thanks for your response. Just curious but clockwork recovery on Vibrant saves itself as update.zip (if I remember correctly) on the root of the internal sd card. Where does it save recovery on MT4G? I didn't see an update.zip file after flashing recovery. Thanks again for your response

Its saved under /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup you will see the dir with timestamp. Normally I don't waste time backing up as I know what I am doing but if you do want it then go ahead and just mv the dir to your PC temporarily then sync back to sdcard once you are done.
Whatever data is saved even the cache on SD I know so if I find data that is valuable I still mv it to /sdcard/files and redirect that path. This way I have clean data scheme as you don't want 9000 bs on your root directory.

I think CM comes with clockwork rom manager preinstalled. Your recovery won't change when you flash a rom. There's no need to back up recoveries because they're available in rom manager. If you need cw 3.0.0.5 just download the flashable version from the cm7 forum and save it.

Since the mytouch 4g installs some of the apps on the microSD card, does a nandroid backup include those in the system image? Or should I use something like titanium backup for those?

Nandroid will back everything in the system including apps but some data is stored on the sd card as well. My advice is to a nandroid and backup your entire sd card to your pc as well

This is not really in reference to cyanogenmod but any rooted MT4G. When you root your phone you download and install clockwork. From rom manager, you choose ' flash recovery'. You choose your phone from the list and it flashes the recovery image somewhere on your phone. My question was to find out what directory does it flash recovery to and as what the file is called.
I am currently running gorillasens final but this would be the same as any rom here, possibly the exception being cyanogenmod

does your phone still boot up properly without any issues? i'm assuming since you had backups prevoiusly that clockworkmod is already installed on your phone. you can just boot into recovery and make another backup. it isn't necessary to have your original backup.
Maybe a good time for a reminder that SD cards fail and accidents happen. It's always a good idea to periodically copy the entire contents of the SD card, which will include your nandroid backups, to an empty folder on your desktop/laptop. Just be sure and enable viewing of hidden and system files & folders.

According to SD card Analyst I have
Clockworkmod: 1.99GB
TWRP: 1.12GB
TBU: 383MB
As you can imagine, that is a BIG chunk out of my 6GB total!
I have flashed lots of ROMs in the last couple of weeks but I have now settled on one. AFAIK all I need to keep is the current bakup in TWRP in case anything happens.
I would be glad for some advice as to what I can safely delete. I don't want to make a mistake as my system is running brilliantly right now.

As you already said, you should keep the TWRP backup as a safety net... The dated folders in the Clockworkmod can be deleted if you don't need to use them any more. Just leave the main folder but delete the sub folders.
TBU backups are just your apps + data... if you don't need data restored (since you probably have them in your TWRP backup) you can delete the contents there as well.

I agree with cvcduty, but I just wondered if there was a reason you use both TWRP and Clockworkmod, especially on an 8GB N7 with limited space. I've always just used CWM, so I was curious

Well, to be honest the answer is a bit silly: I am not aware of having used CWM, I didn't even know I had it!
Can I uninstall it altogether? And if so, how?
In CWM, there is a folder called Blobs with 1.78GB worth of folders. Is it safe to delete it?
If you don't use cwm then yes you can delete it.
I removed mine aswell as I have a nandroid backup on my PC which I can adb push if worst comes

The clockworkmod APK
and
The clockworkmod RECOVERY
both use that same folder. Every time you flash a cyanogen Rom it had the apk installed by default. So that's where it's coming from.
In the folder back up the Nandroid folder or the one with data system recovery files (140-250mb) to your computer and then delete the whole dang folder if you do not use clockwork recovery.
As for titanium you can use the cloud storage feature and save another 500mb

Take a look at my screenshot, if you add up all my usage + free space, it comes out to about 11.42GB. Subtract that from Total space of 12.92GB and you have about 1.5GB of space that's not being reported.
Now what made me notice this was, the other day I made a backup in TWRP, which according to TWRP, will use 1.4+GB of storage. Today I wanted to restore this backup, but TWRP shows that I don't have any backups. I booted back into Android and used file explorer to browse the TWRP folder, and it was empty. I made another backup in TWRP just now to make sure it was backing up properly, and everything seems fine.
Does this look normal? How much unreported spaced is being used on your device?
Edit: So it turns out to be an issue with TWRP. For some reason, the first backup ends up in /data/media/TWRP.
You should try a free app in the app store called storage analyser. It gives you a clear picture of where all you data is being stored. I found a few gb of data that where being used up by things I had installed previously and then left data behind when un installed.

Interesting. Storage Analyzer is reporting 7.97GB of free space, while Android is reporting 5.33GB.

TWRP save backups to the wrong location occasionally.
Using a root explorer. check your mnt/shell/emulated folder. you should find a TWRP folder either in shell or in emulated.
Move it to mnt/shell/emulated/0, or delete it if you need to.
Edit: when the backup folder not in these folder, android system will think it to be "system data"

It never showed correct for me, especially cuz it wouldnt read a lot of files that i just dragged into my phone like a usb storage...
You would think the android team would get these kind of small things fixed...
long shot but If you use linux and delete a file, some put it into a hidden folder .Trash-1000 rather than actually deleting it.
Alright, the same exact thing just happened on my girlfriends phone. She saw my phone and liked how my colors looked, so I flash Franco's kernel onto hers. Before I flashed, I created a back up in TWRP. Again, this backup is no where to be found, and her phone just lost 1.6GB of free space.
Maybe I'll post in the TWRP thread.

Where should we move the backups to? I'm afraid if I move them, they won't show up in recovery.

Can anyone help. I am wanting put Android 4.4 kitkat on my Lg g2 D802 (which i think was on EE, T-mobile) . I've tried cynamod as it's the most popular and a couple of others, but they all seem to want use the SD CARD of the phone. The G2 has not got a slot for that and from what i've read on some models there is a partition type thing on the fixed memeory. I don't have that and can't find a way round it. Does anyone know of an alternitive i can use.

It just show INTERNAL STORAGE on my comp. The problem i've got is if i put the needed files for the rom on the memory where i know where they are. When i go to do the upgrade it deletes them as part of the upgrade. Rooting the phone was easy. it's trying to upgrade thats driving me nuts.

you MUST be wiping the internal storage aswell when "updating", there is no way the ROM.zip will wipe from your storage unless you accidentally wipe it. Just stick it in the root directory of your storage and when wiping...if you are using TWRP, do not select the option to wipe data as it will wipe your internal storage aswell. To wipe data before the flash, go into wipe, advanced and then tick every partition apart from "internal storage"
"Internal Storage" is equivalent to "SD Card". No access to root or system partitions from Windows Explorer. Just me, but I always copy ROMs and other flashable zips to the "download" folder.
I'm agreeing with MalignantQuechnitlan. I haven't used ROM Manager or Clockwork Recovery in at least a year, but it seems you must be electing to wipe your SDCard partition at some point during the installation.

from CWM go to install zip-->choose zip from /sd card-->0/ anything you've put on the sd card should be there
