I have a few questions and they are probably answered here but I'm at work so its very hard tor me to get on my phone.
- is their a way to get android market on a KF even if its not rooted? I really would just like to install apps that are not in the amazon market. A new launcher,etc. Do you have to be rooted to install apps from android?
- What is side loading apps? I keep hearing people talk about this? What is it for?
- is there a way to text people from my KF? If so can anyone tell me a good app?
- how can I change the amazon keyboard to say swiftkey or something?
- any way to play movies on the KF? Could I drop a mkv, avi, divx, etc. movie from my pc onto my kindle? Or could I stream it to my kindle somehow?
- last question to now...is there a way to improve the touch screen response? I have to repeatedly touch icons, links and whatnot. I thought I saw an app that improves the KF screen?

1) No. Market needs root to install. Some other launchers work without root, but you now have to side load them. You can add other non-Amazon apps in many cases, but without root, you can't use the Android Market, so you would need to side load them.
2) Copying the APK install files via download or via usb or other means.
3) The Kindle Fire is not a phone, there is no radio in the device so no text messaging. You can use things like Google Talk but you need root to install it. There are some web based txt stuff, but that is not really on the device.
4) Need root to do this
5) There are other video players that will do this. Like MX Video player
6) Not really.
6 In particular is starting to get on my nerves. I think its an OS/Kernel issue because tapping stuff elsewhere seems to be ok, but that bar is a headache. Hit back 5x and you see it light up each time.
Also I dont know if its dolphin browser or what but a lot of the times I tap a typing area like google search, after 2-3 letters it just hides the keyboard.
Also I've been having more issues where you click a typable area and start typing, but nothing shows. Keyboard is showing recommended words, but none will actually show on the screen.
Oh, also if you're watching a video on a site, good luck moving the time bar. Sometimes I have to press and hold my finger 2-3 seconds for it to trigger.
Seems to be a little worse since 6.2 imo.
Once the kindle is rooted and the entire market is installed does the kindle act like an android phone? Do you get the android home screen? With cm7 does your tablet act just like phone obviously without gos and so on.

The market is just an app that you use to get more apps.
It will still look and feel like an out of the box kindle fire.
And last I recall the market wont show up in the standard kindle launcher, so no one would even know it was there.
You have to take additional steps to even utilize it.
CM7 would make it act like an android device. there are tablets with CM7 so it has nothing to do with phones. Gos I assume is gps, and some tablets have that so it isnt phone only.

I think you can send/receive a limited number of text messages as well as make /receive calls with a free Google Voice account. I have not tested this with the Kindle Fire, so someone else may correct me.
There is an app called TouchScreen Booster that may help you adjust your screen sensitivity.

Go to Kindle Fire browser Google search for "applanet". Under the link will be on the left "familiar interface" I tried that one first and it didn't work. On the right of it is one called "Version". I clicked that one and it directly started downloading an app. Tap the upper left part of the screen where the notifications are and when it is done downloading tap on its notification. It will install. (prior to this you need to go to settings - device and turn on download from unknown sources) install it and it creates an app called Applanet Market. Go to the Amazon market and search for ADW ex. Download that. You may find apps on Applanet that are not in Amazons.Search for any application you want. Like youtube, earth, gmail, whatever. When you're done playing with applanet hit your home key. It will give you a choice of ADW or stock. Check off the default box and choose ADW. Go to menu at bottom and go to ADW settings. Advanced. Set columns to 6 and rows to 6 and return back. At the bottom middle you have the ADW 3 button controller. I opened the app drawer (middle button) and dragged the Kindle Fire launcher to home screen and then long pressed it and dragged it over the area left of the appdrawer button. It will stick here and with it you can get to the stock KF home screen. But whenever you tap home, you will go to ADW. If you ever want to change that, go to settings. Applications. ADW. And at the lower area you can choose to release the default.

In response to this and OP's earlier question, MX is good. Moboplayer is good too, but I've been having full screen problems with Mobo. On streaming, you can use Dropbox or Sugarsync (I use SS, there is a thread on it in the apps category). For streaming though, I've found that MX doesn't work great and Mobo is better, which is why I use that for streaming, although I still have the full screen issues. If you stream using SS, just make sure that file is encoded in a quality to get a good stream. There is also another thread on how to setup files to do this in apps category as well.

I've got a friend who's about to be deployed overseas. He has used an Android phone for a couple of years, is an avid reader, has never had a tablet but is proficient with the Android interface.
He expects to have access to Internet (wifi) only periodically, he expects to be without electrical power for days at a time, he needs any non-essential gear to be lightweight and durable. He asked me if he should get an ereader. I think a rooted Nook Simple Touch would meet his ereader needs and go one better. I'm trying to set him up with a rooted NST that will give him access to a few essential tablet apps, an Internet browser for when he's got wifi and a selection of ereader apps so he can read anything that's out there in electronic print.
So far I've rooted the NST using SalsichaNooter (thanks for that), installed Go Launcher because you can easily increase the size of text and icons, SearchMarket to overcome the inability to search in Android Market (wtf?) and ereader apps Kindle and Google Books. I sent my Gmail account a pure white image that I use for wallpaper to make icons easy to see.
Some lingering questions:
Is there a way to reduce "color settings" or whatever it would be called so that the grayscale shades are fewer? I'd gladly trade more contrast for fewer times that a medium gray icon is barely distinguishable against an only slightly darker medium gray background.
Is there a way to make the icons of Button Savior larger? I love the app. I use it on every Android device I've got because I really like having these essential commands right under my thumb but making the icons twice as large would be nice.
Are there themes that are designed to optimize the settings for a grayscale device? I found a couple for "Go SMS" in Market but I don't know exactly what that is.
Is there a workaround for the inability to install the Barnes & Noble Nook ereader app? I keep getting "Installation error. Duplicate provider authority". I don't know if he needs three or more ereader apps but I don't want to limit his choices.
I've read the Nook Touch forums on XDA, I've done Google searches on these topics but haven't found good answers. If there are resources I've missed I'd appreciate a heads-up.
1. To reduce colors or increase contrast, the only method that comes to mind is to use APK Manager or APK Multi-tool and modify the XML, png, and 9 patch files, will need some knowledge about Android layouts, etc. and color codes like #ff000000 is solid black. I had to do some, not really sure how legit that is, but original devs did not reply to emails when requested high contrast color schemes.
2. Replacing images with APK multi-tool might work, I tried google but can't seem to determine if this project is opensource or not, if it is, send me a link and I will modify it for you.
3. The nooter that you used, installs a good launcher and theme with a lot of monochrome icons for various applications, but as you installed another launcher, you will need to come up with a theme. Go SMS is a SMS application useful on cell phones by the same developer as Go Launcher, you will need themes for Go Launcher.
4. You could try modifying the manifest using APK mult-tool, however, I fail to see the point when you have an optimized version for the device already integrated with the device.
I can only provide you optimizations for opensource software or if the dev of the application explicitly allows to modify his APK, I will not provide you with any other modifications out of respect to the developers, I am one too. I hope you understand.
TouchNooter has a version of market that has search working.
You might be able to find with a little searching an e-ink theme for Go-Launcher in market. If all else fails you could probably create your own theme based off of like Minimalist black or use a non e-ink theme that does the trick.
The built in e-reader app is the equivalent if not better than the market nook app.

Somewhere on this forum is a theme with contrast icons for go launcher, it really helps, although it is not for all apps.

It seems odd that you'd have troubles with the latest TouchNooter, the issue I seem to come across for most people using it is the Wait a Day issue with market, but since your Market is already working and the other Nooter has done most of the work you could try running TouchNooter 1.11.20 on top of it (making sure you're upgraded to 1.1 first), or burning the card (and after installing a file manager) try installing the Market+Gapps from there manually to "update" them.
As for setting the B&N button to take you home and ending up on B&N home, try and make sure you have the setting saved for home. Also make sure that your default home is Go Launcher. As long as Button Savior's home will take you to go Launcher the B&N home button should too if you've modified the right button. Perhaps try a reboot.
Go Launcher > Preferences > Visual Settings > Backgrounds > App drawer background > Custom Background
Then just select a blank wallpaper image.
Using a rooted NST 1.2.1 with cool reader.
Is there a library app compatible with this apart from the stock library? The app is just to view the books present on the device. Something like bookshelves, like the moon reader kinds.
Also, is there a NoRefresh compatible with 1.2.1 ? The other NoRefresh apps dont work with this version.

It works
Selection of the book from the library prompts me for the option of reading, i.e, cool reader or the native B&N reader. Not sure how exactly to make Cool Reader the default option.
Have a lot of books on the device, so, it is a bit tedious to keep scrolling down the list. Hence the interest in shelves. B&N Library has shelves, but manual addition everytime i download a book is a pain.
Also, any other settings available on your library app apart from the metadata on long press?

Indeed, by putting coolreader in /system/app, When I choose a book from library, A pop up shows me which reader will be used.

Whenever multiple apps could handle an intent but no app has been specified as default, a "picker" window pops up.
It lists all the possibilities and at the very bottom there is a checkbox.
The checkbox has text in white which says, "Use this app as default app in the future" (or something).
Of course you can't read the white text.
Just click the box, then carefully select which app to use in the future.
To undo what you selected can be difficult because you will never see that dialog again if you check the checkbox.
There are tools to fix that, non-B&N Settings.apk or you can edit /data/system/packages.xml
Uhm It seems that we are misunderstanding. I read all your posts about alternative library app.One of them mentioned that if I want to use your Library app, I have to remove default Home, Shop and Library of my Nook. I did then when my nook started, It showed a launcher with your Library Icon.
Can you modify your app that when my nook start, it will be run at the same time and disable the HOME button ( used to get back to launcher)?
If you modified your "n" button it should go to whatever you selected as the default app for home.
Apparently that is the default launcher.

Actually, I do not use my Nook for email, browser, I have an ipad for those tasks. I love the nook because I can focus on just reading. The combination of your library and coolreader makes my nook perfect.
Not making it the default home. Configuring the physical button for switching pages as a shortcut to the library.

Which firmware are you using ? 1.0 or 1.1. I heard that 1.1.2 comes with Wifi bug fix.
Btw, Today I upgraded into 1.2.1. The reader renders text much better than 1.1.2's one howerver, the battery is a pain. I lost 4% in just one hour even in sleeping mode @@ Does any one know why ? ( I removed all unnecessary apps like phone.apk, telephony...)

I have even caught it with the screen's IR touch sensors still running in sleep.
Lore and legend says never to use the power button to put your Nook to sleep.
Let it time out on the screen saver.
I'll see about doing something on that Home issue.
Right now my Nook is not booting up and I have to hook up the console to see why.

I'm trying to figure out what to do with Library.apk
Currently it only handles epub files.
It could handle any kind of file but the problem is extracting metadata.
If it's not extracting metadata you might as well be just using a file manager.
Extracting metadata out of epubs is pretty simple.
Extracting metadata out of pdfs can be difficult.
There is a nice (computer-type) library that can do this though.
The Nook Reader also handles pdfs.
I have lots of technical references in pdf but they are better accessed from a file manager.
Another topic I wanted to raise elsewhere:
Are people happy with their pdf reading capability/apps?
Are there problems with opening some pdfs or formatting?
Are the pan/zoom/orientation options sufficient?
I'm working (a bit) on a ground-up rewrite of the Reader.
It's still lacking a lot of features, but it also doesn't have all the B&N cruft in it.
Right now it has portrait/landscape of PDFs with overscan (to get rid of the paper margins).
Even this small step makes reading easier.
I've got about 200+ PDFs on my Nook, one that is 3700 pages long.

I love and use Library.apk and I hate to be critical about such good free software but on my nook sometimes the app doesn't capture the same title and author (or even getting the author) as does Calibre and the standard nook Library. Also, sometimes the author sorting is by first name, sometimes by last name even on the same page. I'm using the 1.9 version.
The problem is always the lack of good metadata.
Even figuring out how to split a name is not easy.
Jethro Tull should be filed under J for the band or under T for the historical person?
Gabriel García Márquez, is his last name García Márquez or Márquez?

Hello! I have not rooted an android device in a lot of time, and I am basically a noob, but I do read a lot, and my first rooting more than year ago turned out to be a complete success, as far as my knowledge goes.
Now I have A Nook Simple Touch model BNRV-300 with current firmware version 1.2.1 and I would like to add more features to it, because for the price I got it it gives me NOTHING I need.
B&N Forcing updates over the air and registration using the Internet when I first start the device is RIDICULOUS and is evenworse than a DRM protection!
product containing such DRM should be banned for sale at least in Eirope by the Customer PRotection, for limitations they imply on the users!!!
now lets return to the topic and my QUESTION
I already said I have a Nook Simple Touch BNRV-300 with current firmware version 1.2.1
My question is: Currently what is the best method to Root this device in order to get access to more features software? I am looking for method that includes making a BACKUP. Is there currently and entire Custom firmware released that will REPLACE the existing useless firmware on the Nook Simple touch?
What custom apps, kernel, and roms can you reccoment me?

Ditto what OverByter said. The NookManager is, in my experience, a very simple and foolproof method. Whether you decide to pursue GoogleApps, etc., is up to you. But for root and a simple initial set-up, NM is the way to go, IMHO.

Hi, following the advice from this thread, I just rooted my Nook Simple Touch GlowLight. I have previously rooted nook simple touch with the same process.
The market is working, gmail is working. What I dont understand is how to make it user friendly etc. How do I make it like a tablet. I installed some launchers but I have to go into apps and then select it to run it everytime.
I am just wondering what should be done once you have rooted and googlified the nook.
Any recommendations on launchers, themes any other enhancements and ideas to use a rooted nook will be really helpful.

I tried a bunch of launchers when I first rooted and finally settled on ADW. For me it was easy to set up (once I got over the "I don't know anything about Android" feeling) and I initially used the selected app screen as my "Home". There are two ways to do that. One, after installing ADW and rebooting the Nook it will ask which app you want to use to open "Home" and you will have a chance to set that one as default (either the B&N stock Home screen or the ADW app drawer). And/or, you can use NTMM to assign the QuickNav "Home" button to ADW Launcher.
Pretty much any launcher should provide you with the same options once installed when you reboot.
So that's what I used to do but I eventually went back to the B&N "Home" screen on boot and then after that I can access it from a long press of the "N" button (again, you can assign that with NTMM). I've almost completely reassigned by QuickNav buttons (except for Library). See this post (result in #4).
I've also done the multi-touch enhancement (nice for Opera Mobile and some other apps), No-Refresh and FastMode2 (contrary to what the posts seem to indicate about FastMode2 I have found that the app does indeed toggle the mode on my NST so I assigned it to one of the side buttons and No-Refresh to another one).
Lots of info on various apps out there. Here's my "short" list of what worked for me (in no particular order):

And I did a Framework-res.apk mod to slightly grey the backgrounds of menus so that some of the "invisible" menu options that come with many apps can actually be read).
I don't know how many times I've made backups and redone things, trying to find what works for me (mostly reading, some browsing). My Nook is still fully B&N functional, as far as I know. The only thing I have not tried is logging on in the store. Except for the inadequacy of Opera Mobile (I've tried every other browser known to humans and aliens), the set-up actually is pretty nice

What version of Crosswords did you get to work on your nook. I couldn't get any of the ones I tried to work?

Yes, I really like WiFi Transfer. Saves a lot of wear and tear on that USB jack. The only limitation I could find (beyond the 5 MB file size limit for the free version) is that transfers to the internal My Files folder are not updated in the Library unless you reboot. So I just use the sdcard.
You're right, no market crossword apps work properly on the rooted Nook. I accidentally stumbled across a version of Crosswords that does, however. Check your PMs.

I moved my question to the help thread, I think it was the wrong thread here...
I just purchased and successfully rooted (thank you experts here) my Nook Simple Touch.
I would like to create a streamlined reading experience between my Nook ST (where I will do majority of my reading), and my Galaxy S3 (which I will read while on the bus / in lines / etc). This is in fact why I purchased my own root-able Nook rather than continuing to side-load and use my girlfriend's kindle.
I have searched extensively and not come up with any solutions. The current Moon Reader Pro is not supported by the Nook ST, and reading others' posts it seems it does not work very well anymore even if you can find a place to download the old version apk's (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1687208&highlight=sync+last+read+page)
I have tried PageTurner, which does not allow you to make notes or bookmarks, but at least is supposed to sync last page read, but it's not working for me across devices.
It seems like this really would be a common feature users would desire, has anyone found a good way to accomplish this?

Forgot to say, I have also tried FBreader, but this would require me to root my Galaxy S3, and I have no other reason to want to do that at this point in time, so prefer a different option.
Found some solutions.
1.) Page Turner
This is what I settled on. The sync does in fact work, what I had to do was delete every book off my device first. Then on Calibre, change the settings so it would automatically manage the metadata (on each connect) on my devices. After doing this I re-uploaded the books to my phone and Nook Simple Touch, allowing Calibre to manage these devices. Since doing this, the sync feature has worked well.
Pros:
-best, most crisp display of any of the readers I have found which are capable of syncing
-sync feature works smoothly (after loading as above)
-developer of this software is very active and responsive
-the objective developer states for designing this software is consistent with my purpose - open platform for reading DRM free ebooks smoothly on multiple devices
Cons:
-does not support custom bookmarks or notes (I am told this is planned for the next version, but timeline is not certain)
-control of interface leaves room for improvement (have to navigate through cumbersome menu to adjust font size, can't put in all the cool finger swipe controls that Moon Reader has), however, as my GF put it, the purpose is to read not to have fancy controls, and bottom line is once I get the settings adjusted the way I want, this offers the most crisp, best visual reading experience.
2.) Moon+ Reader Pro (old version, can get the old APK that Nook will accept)
I was able to get this sync feature to work after clearing device content and re-uploading with Calibre managing devices and meta-data, as described above. Not sure what problem the people in the thread I linked to in my original post were having, but I did not have this problem when using the same version on both my phone and nook.
Pros:
-syncs
-amazing control options (adjust font by sliding up and down side, assign swipes across page to various functions - I liked left to right and vice versa for skipping ahead or back by chapters, swipe up to close app, swipe down to return to bookshelf), very feature rich
-allows for notes and bookmarks
Cons:
-display is horrible on Nook! absolutely terrible. This was the deal breaker for me, as even though I loved the ability to customize and control the interface, the fuzziness, lack of contrast and crisp screen was unacceptable for prolonged reading.
-the developer is not currently interested in supporting the Nook, so there will be no updates which will change anything. All the development is going into versions that will not run on the Android 2.1 (which nook uses)
3.) Aldiko using Aldiko sync
I must confess I did not try this very hard. I downloaded the latest version of Aldiko which the Nook would support, and found the control of the interface as well as quality of visual display to be inferior to the other two options.
However, you can make this work I believe. You need the separate app aldiko sync. Unfortunately, in the more recent versions (which are not supported on Nook), you need to have root access to the device (something I was not interested in doing on my phone). I did get it to work by loading the old APK, which did not require root access for aldiko sync, and this did work. But as above, I found this option inferior to both of the others.
Hope that helps anyone else with the same questions I had. I would like it if Page Turner would become more feature rich, the very most important feature needed being support for note taking, and custom book marks.
