I know there are threads on tasker, but i have to say, this is one sick app.
all you have to do is send sms with secret word from any phone and Tasker will enable wifi, gps, and send back a link to google maps with phone location.
That is amazing, but...
Pity the GPS, Compass and Google Maps implementation is completely ****ing broken!
I would definitely love to use this when (or if) the locational services ever do function. Thanks for the heads up -- I had no idea this existed.
There are multiple apps like "Where's my droid" that do this as well.

Maybe, but tasker does thousand other things. For me gps works fine, but there is a problem with compass

And doesn't 'where is my droid' only rings the phone if u send sms ?
If its not too long, would you mind posting your contexts and tasks to achieve just that exact same you just described? I'm trying to get better with the program although at a very slow pace
Thanks a lot mate!

you can find it here: http://tasker.wikidot.com/profile-index
the guy is using GPS only, but its pretty straight forward to include WIFI in this as well (WIFI is for better location without GPS). The time to wait for GPS to get a lock is up to you, I have 1 min.
and as you can see there is a profile there if you wish to lock you phone with SMS and/or play sound. (havent tried that)
For now I have these tasks: 1. If power ON, screen timeout is set to 45 sec (from 15), and lockguard is disabled 2. from 7:30pm to 8am screen brightness set to min and to AUTO other times. 3 Created a widget for "Vibrate" and "Bluetooth" since Vibrant is missing easy access to those functions (in a nice menu widget to save space). 4. I have several tasks killed at boot since they are useless anyway. (for this need to insert WAIT command with whatever time needed since some tasks start after the phone boots)
Thanks a lot for that link! Was able to create my own widget too now!

Instead of trying to uninstall apps, installing Magic Locker allows you to set power saving and this could be very helpful. In my case it doubled the battery life and I now have around 60% left in the evening.
Hope this helps.

There are a number of Apps you can install that will show running applications ~ SystemPanel is one such app.
It comes in two variant ~ Paid & Free.
The free version is okay for looking at what your apps are doing but it does not offer the same level of service that the paid version gives and in this case you do need the paid version.
Full version ($2.99) adds app manager (installer/uninstaller with multi-version APK archival), and long-term application resource monitor to solve app-related battery life problems.
However, for finding out what apps are using your battery you can do this with your phone's built-in settings.
Just navigate to Settings/Applications/Running Services and look at what apps are currently running.
If you don't need a particular app running simply tap on it and select 'Stop'.
Job done that is one app no longer running in the background.
Another option is to again go to Settings/Applications/Battery Usage.
Here you not only see the graph at the top but also a list of main running apps (note not all are shown).
Tap the graph at the top and it shows you various parameters i.e. when the screen was on and when the device was awake. Basically you need both to be the same. If the phone's screen was off but it remained awake you then have an app running constantly in the background.
So, press the back button and look at the list of apps showing. To terminate an app simply tap on it and this time select 'Force Close'.
Spend a little time now and again popping over to these two places (Running Services & Battery Usage) and you should be able to identify what app or apps are eating your battery.

In my case I chose MIUI but I think any theme should work as well. After installation it asked if I wanted to activate the battery saving mode which I accepted to check its performance as I was having battery drain as well and needed a solution.
I was happily surprised the next day. I hope all these issues are fixed by Samsung in ICS.

Hello,
i'm new to Android and the Nexus 4 is my first Android device. I'm really happy with it but i've got some questions which i'm sure are pretty easy to answer for most people here:
- I turned off the vibration (touch feedback) in the settings, but in some apps it's still there, for example when i type in a URL in chrome. how do i disable it?
- I came from an iPhone and i'm used to having an app for notes. Is there any good, simple app for android, where you can just write down some notes, similar to the iphone app?
- I've heard of a great app to use in case you lose your phone or someone steals it, so you can track it down from your pc, take photos etc, but i forgot its name. Does anyone know?
- Is it normal that the Nexus 4 camera sometimes keeps trying to focus on something? it happened to me sometimes that it focused, the image got sharp, then suddenly it loses the focus again, focuses again, loses it again, and so on, even though i was not moving the phone (holding it in my hand though).
Thanks for your help!

Ok, I Don't Have A N4, But I Can Help. For The Type Vibration, You Might Have To Go Into The Keyboard Settings And Look For It There. I Think It's Set Apart From The Other Feedback Option.
I Use ColorNote & EverNote. ColorNote, As The Name Implies, Has All These Color Options You Can Use, And Separate Your Notes By Color. (Red for thoughts, green for to-do stuff, and so on) I Like EverNote Because It Automatically Saves Your Notes Online.
I Think You're Referring To The Lookout Mobile Security App. I Have It On Both Of My Phones.
Once Again, Not A Nexus Owner, So I Can't Help With Your Camera Issue. Sorry. :/
All The Apps Suggested Are Free. (Lookout has Premium features that you have to pay for, I think by the month)
I Hope I've Helped.

I have come from an iPhone too, although this is not my first Android. For the keyboard vibration, you have to turn it off on the keyboard's settings, as the guy above me said.
For the notes, I use this. It's a simple but great and useful application.

Another thing i don't fully understand:
On the top left of the screen (on the bar), i see Skype, which makes sense, since Skype is open in the background, so i won't miss a call or message or whatever. But then why is there no symbol for What's app or facebook? Don't they work the same? Basically, there also needs to be some kind of background process open for these, right? But why are they not shown on the top left of the bar?

While we're at it, another question
How do you actually CLOSE an app? So it's not in the RAM anymore. I'd imagine that all those apps still running in the background use a lot of battery, right?
Just use the third soft button at the button of the screen then close the apps from there. As for background processes, you need not to worry about then. Android is good at handling background processes so they don't take a lot of battery.

Isn't this just a list of "recently opened" apps? Because if you swipe them off there, these apps are still shown as "Active" in the settings menu.
Nope, you close them from there. Although some may have a background process like Facebook so you can still receive notifications with the app closed. It takes up minimal battery.

For this scenario Cerberus has a feature where you dial a unique code to access the hidden program but you've probably not noted it. If you haven't changed it, dial

Or to remove you could also go to Settings / Security / Device Administrator and uncheck it then Settings / Apps and uninstall the app.

hi all. just got a nexus 4. coming from tmobile G2. the G2 had embedded swype keyboard which i loved. nexus 4 doesn't have that. so i installed swype app from play store. while this swype is nice, it doesn't automatically remember the words that i type that are not in the swype dictionary (like curses and such). i have to click "add to dictionary" after each word that it doesn't recognize.
the question i have: is there a way to get the "old" swype back or perhaps somehow enable automatic memorization of the words on this one? perhaps anyone has other suggestions for similar keyboards?
thank you

You can make swype automatically remember words.
In swype settings go to My Words -> Change Dictionary Behavior and then choose "Allow swype to automatically add words to my dictionary".

Swype and swiftkey have dictionary cloud sync. That's a very nice feature for those who have 2 or more android devices.
i paid 99 cents for it so not too bad of an investment. love the keyboard, but i wish that when i disable automatic correction i would still be able to have it add words automatically. seems like it only does that when the auto correction is enabled.

As I remember it comes as a part of the kernel for those devices including LG G2, since there aren't any custom kernels out for these devices yet I highly doubt that's a possibility right now.
you can opt for proximity actions for locking and unlocking, although it would drain your battery a bit.
I'm using Wakeup Touch Nexus which is available in Google Play for free. Dint notice any battery drainage. Very nice app. If anyone got better app can suggest me too...

Pretty much every major OEM like Sony, HTC, LG and even Chinese manufacturers like OPPO , Xiaomi etc have implemented double tap to wake on their large screen phones and I really don't know what's stopping Samsung to implement in spite of so many Note generations .
Only way to properly implement this is using a custom kernel for the device
Tap Tap App @ Play Store
Tap Tap App works for me. Galaxy Note 4.
Requires configuration.
Lost functionality, how to get it back?

OK, I've got a VKWorld VK6050S (note the S). This will be a long story, but I feel I must post many details. Otherwise, there will be that smart-*** posting "but you can't do that!!!"
Had the phone for several weeks now. Took a LONG time to set it up and get it running EXACTLY the way I wanted it to. As part of that process, I installed Nova launcher, and an app called "DTSO". Anyway, when it was all set up.... I could double-tap the home screen to lock, and the display would go black. Then, *without using the proximity sensor*, I could double-tap the middle of the BLACK screen, which would cause the display to wake up and display the lock screen. I didn't set a lock on this screen, so I could just swipe up to clear it. Note I could double-tap the BLACK screen to wake it up.
So I was happy with the way everything was set up. Only problem was, it was not stable. Most of the time, if you tried to take a picture, the phone would freeze. (forever). Or sometimes a reboot would take HOURS (starting after the animated vkworld logo displayed) I tried several suggestions. It was not a bad memory card, and it was not corrupted files on a memory card. I tried clearing various caches, etc. Nothing worked. Finally, in desperation...I went to the factory boot menu (chinese, but I found a guide for it) and cleared hardware cache / emmc / whatever. That left me with *** CHINESE LOLLIPOP ***, and all my apps/settings/data were GONE...
(sigh)
So I had to start from figuring out how to switch back to English. And then starting all over again. I wasn't back to "zero". I went back to "minus one". (!!!!)
After many hours setting up the phone again with dozens of applications, getting my account settings input, getting it all configured...
The only thing I can NOT do now is to double-tap the black screen to wake it up. The phone is rock-solid STABLE now, so that is an improvement. But I want it to wake the screen with a double-tap, like it did before!!!
I'm now using "Go" launcher. But I (temporarily) tried "Nova" launcher, like I had it before. DTSO does not work like it used to. It won't wake up the screen while black. Again, this USED TO WORK, so it's not a hardware issue. What did I do wrong? What did I miss in setting this thing up again?
