Hello phone geniuses,
I bought an AT&T branded Samsung Focus from AT&T a few months back. It shipped with Windows Phone 7, and all was well with the world. I enjoyed the GPS, wifi, driving directions, bing maps, etc..
I am currently in Beijing, and will be here for another few months. I spoke with someone at AT&T, and they gave me the unlock code for the phone. I successfully entered it after purchasing and installing a SIM card for China Mobile over here.
Everything works.. except.. the GPS. None of the location services seem to be working. Does anyone know if there is anything I can do to fix that? I'm guessing that it's trying to connect with GPS satellites over the wrong hemisphere?
Thanks for your time! You guys rock my phone world.
Try "Gps App" in Marketplace. If it shows sattelites, you're fine. If not, might be a phone issue.
The phone doesn't care where the you are for sattelites, but, if you're in between tall buildings (sky scrapers etc) chances are your GPS reception is weak. Test it as I suggested and get back. Also, try to find an open(er sky) area to test this.

Thanks for the reply.
I installed the app. When I run it, though.. it looks like it's frozen. It shows the picture of the compass, and I see some latitude and longtidude markings, and some kind of meter that looks full.. but it doesn't move or change.
I had the same problem when I brought my at&t branded tilt2 to shanghai. suddenly google maps didn't work, etc.. it was only fixed when I flashed the energy rom to the phone. what was in the rom that would have made the difference? radio? Is something like that possible with wp7?
Here is a video review of the app, so you get an idea on what to expect.
As you can see, on the top right of the screen, the bars change colors: red for no accuracy or low, yellow for medium and green for high accuracy. Under the bar, in meters, is the planar error from your location.
Another good indicator that it's working is the Altitude shows up (lower left corner).
As I said, try to find an open sky area, to test it. If Altitude doesn't show up (see at 0:08 in the video review) and the bars don't change color, you've got another some other issue.
As for the roms, there are no custom roms for Focus, just the original ones, but I suggest not to do that flashing yet yet.

Hey guys, thanks for all the help, but guess what? The new update rolled down the pike from Microsoft.. and it bricked my phone, so I guess it doesn't matter anyway!

Don't panic. Try to reconnect the phone with Zune started, it might continue from where it left off. If not, read here.
Philippines here with an unlocked samsung focus, I can't seem to get bing maps to ever get a signal. my iphone locks on just fine here, but not the focus so far. Either the gps is weak or doesnt work here
Going to try it outside sometime

Hello people. Tried to search the forum for this but nothing came up. I have a swedish Xperia and have flashed it a couple of times with different roms but have now returned to stock spl and what I think is the original rom.
Didnt have problems with the GPS in the beginning and it started causing problems when I started flashing, working now and then. Now I have no function what so ever.
Anyone got an idea?
Is it possible to "update" the phone wia the sony ericsson update utility to the original rom, my roms doesnt feel so original, dont even have a calculator.
My GPS doesnt seem to work very well either.. Even with newly downloaded GPS Satellite info, it cant seem to find a lock :\

That's what Im saying. Have you been flashing yours or is it straight from the box?
Sticky a GPS thread?
I propose that one of these GPS problem threads be made sticky since we cannot simply search "GPS" here and the GPS problems seem to be accumulating.
With that said, I would have to say that my GPS performance is pretty terrible. At first, it felt like doing the QuickGPS thing and/or deleting the xtra.bin file helped. For the most part, though, getting a lock has proven quite sporadic. What should the expectation here be? Should I expect the GPS to work reliably indoors? What about if I am near a window? Why would it work in some buildings near a window and not in others?
My personal opinion is that the GPS should work within 15-20 feet of a window. Using Chartcross GPS Test, even when the GPS is locked, I am getting mostly yellow bars. I am not exactly sure what a good reading looks like on Chartcross, but there appears to be a 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% bar. Maybe the 25% bar is 100%? In any event, I rarely have a satellite that is getting above what I suspect to be 30%.
Is there a thread somewhere that details what the various fields mean and/or should read in Chartcross or a similar utility? I am coming up on my 30 days to return the phone, so if someone thinks that my device may be defective please speak up!
Thanks as always XDA-ers!
got a new phone from tmo today...rooted it, flashed jf1.5, flashed new spl, moved apps and dalvik cache to sd...smooth sailing...redownloaded all my apps from sd and from market, still good...went to google maps and it cant find my location using gps...cellular location still good though...and yes, I did enable gps in the settings...so I reflashed did everything as before and still no go...did I just get a defective G1 or is there something I can fix? Thanks for any help guys!
BTW, my old phone, before it got wet, worked great with all the same settings and same ROM...
GPS can be iffy. Some locations are just prone to bad GPS acquisition. I went to visit my parents last night, real hard to get a fix in their backyard, but eventually it did. Tried at a friend's apartment building, anywhere NEAR it, its impossible to get a fix. Probably something to do with signal reflection. Other times, it'll lock on within a couple of seconds.
Your radio and firmware version are also important. The newer versions seem to lock on to GPS a lot easier. You say that you have jf1.5 -- the latest is 1.51, and can you confirm that you have the latest (official, not the hacked phone killer) radio installed?

I do have jf1.51...and the latest radio...and the latest SPL...my old phone didnt have this problem...I kept all my settings(thank you MYBACKUP PRO) so essentially everything is the same, except for the phone...and the same spots where I used to be able to get a fix with my gps(even indoors) I dont get anything....must be the phone...and if it is...any fixes you guys know about?
just got off the phone with a tmo rep re: my gps issue....I explained to him that I used to be able to get a gps lock on my old phone in seconds indoors and out but not with this replacement phone and he says to me well I have a g1 here with me and Im not able to get a gps lock...I told him that it's probably because he's inside a building with lots of electrical interference and other buildings blocking the reception...i also told him that I was able to use TeleNav with my old phone along with other apps that required gps...and he suggests to me to call TeleNav because it might be a problem with their app...oy...he also suggests to me to go to a tmo store where they have demo phones and we could compare gps signals....oy...I also told him that that I used google maps as a navigation tool before but not anymore since I cant get a gps lock anywhere...and he just tells me to try the tmo store...oy...i might need to unroot this phone and return it to tmo, I guess....
Hi everyone,
Sorry to bother with that, but i have an issue with my Galaxy Note 3 LTE, Cyanogen 11 M8.
Fresh install, everything wiped.
It seems that the GPS is fully down... GPS Status is unable to see or lock anything, Navigation freeze etc....
Maps is able to find my position, but only with network enabled.... if i disabled it... it is lost
In GPS Status, app stay "looking for GPS localization", and when a start an app that need the gps, the Gps Status appears a few second, with an "X".
I neved had this kind of issue, and i didn't find any clues over Internet (but i've seen people with the same issue)
I'm almost sure it was working in M7... i didn't use the gps since i upgrade the phone.
So, has anyone an idea about my problem ?
Many thanks
I had the same issue with the same configuration...
For me, it had to do with the 3G phone tower which appears not to be updated to certain parameters...
This happened when I was in a tiny village of the South West of the UK...
I then try the GPS in other cities, 50 miles away, and everything went back to normal...
I live in London, and travel abroad monthly; and no issues there also...
I would suggest to try your GPS in an other area...

Thanks,
I also live in a small city in France, i hope your solution will also work for me !
I will try tomorrow, in a "bigger city"
Unfortunately... i took my car and drive to be closer of a big city... no success.
It seams that the GPS is down... 'cause i launch some apps that give the signal received by the phone... and it appears that received absolutly nothing. (0, nada, the void)
I've tried to revert to M7 : no GPS at all.
Tried some gps.conf found on the forum : nothing.
It start to scare me, i hope the GPS is not "broken" (could i have killed the GPS antenna ?)
Anyway, i'm still looking for any clues or a way to check the GPS log.
Thanks

GPS connect has NOTHING to do with the SIZE of the city the only factor SHOULD be view of clear SKY.
I was going to say that GPS only works when you're outdoors. Trying to get a signal wont work when in your home etc
For info :
My GPS problem seems to be related to Android 4.4.4.
There's many people complaining that the GPS became innacurate or simply unavailable with this version.
And, it seems that the Cyanogen team has issues making the GPS work for Cyanogen 11 M9 (it's on the wiki).
Currently, there's no fix available. (for some people, rewrinting all APN worked, even if it's not related to GPS, etc etc etc... there's many solution available, but not working for everyone.)
Same issue here, prognosis for it should be posted here, Thx.
Hi Everyone,
If there's people following this thread, i'm still looking for a solution...
Here's all the thing i've tried, without success :
- Reinstall / change Modem
- Back to stock rom (GPS still not working)
- Format /system and reinstall
- Re-Partition
- NV Rebuild
Each time, it's the same thing : i start GPS Status, and i get the icon with the cross, and nothing happen.

Sometimes with Odin, sometimes with Clockwork... don't remember exactly
Each time, i was never able to get a GPS signal.
If you ODIN'd back to stock and GPS is still down on stock ROM, then you probably have a hardware issue. There is a GPS fix thread on the forum with pics of the hardware breakdown.
Hi everyone,
I can't explain what happened... but my GPS is back. hallelujah !
I saw this morning that the Cyanogen 11 M10 for the hlte (Galaxy Note 3) was available.
I update the Cyanogen i had installed (M9)... and test GPS right after that... nothing.
And then, i tested it tonight, the satellite dish appeared with the cross... but i was able to "touch" it with my finger : And then the icon dissapeared, and the new icon with the sattelite dish and the wave appeared and i saw GPS Signal !
I got a lock after a few sec.
Sorry guys, i don't have any answer about what happened, and how tthe GPS got back to work.
But anyway, thanks for the help !

Works great for me. You can additionaly get New agps data by the app "gps status"

G2 GPS is weak, poor . Now this Pokemon Go "fever" will emerge this problem for all user they did not notice untill now.
Is a design issue, LG put a poor and weak antenna inside our G2 that is fashion, beauty and small but with a not so great GPS.
Nothing we can do to solve suddenly. It is not the best device to play Pokemon Go

I have 2 LG d802.. one work quite good and another have problems with long time to fix and loosing signal often.
Did not find any fix for it... bot are on same rom / release.. .. tweeking gps.conf and phone time helps a bit but is sitil quite annoying...
when you compare gps signal strength on both devices.. (when both have god fix signal strength is "on par"..)
I loosing my mind an my kid is "killing me".. .. ordered new back cover and battery.. I hope it will help.. (paper underlying contacts of antenna in cover did not bring any difference...)
Bu second G2 has fix in 17-23 sec .. and only looses it in places where also my Garmin Oregon would have difficulties...

Well, High accuracy means you are using more LTE antenna and wifi hotspot to get your fix and position and GPS only to refine it, me too using Waze with high accuracy I can navigate without issue, we are talking about GPS only navigation and in this case our G2 is a pain. No way to go in a foreign country (where 4g cost a fortune) and use a offline navigator program. That is the real problem.

I hope that will fix your issue but probably is not, there are several way to solve (youtube video can help) and the most quoted is a copper wire across the back or a copper foil in the antenna, that will increase GPS antenna signal a lot but I don't know if it safe. 3 on 4 G2 soffert the issue, your other G2 seems been luky one.
Best way to solve

Look at this: https://youtu.be/jLuOz0W2A50
Wondering if anyone is having the same frustrating experience as me in terms of GPS locking on when first opening Maps or Waze. It seems like it's taking 2-3 minutes for Maps or Waze to actually figure out exactly where I am and properly display a route. I realize this was sort of normal years ago but not anymore. Before it locks on correctly, the route is created but a message about no GPS appears on the top of the app and I'm stuck not having directions. This was not an issue on my 5T. I'm on OOS 9.0.12 rooted. This has been the same on every version of OOS since I got the phone, even stock TMO ROM before I switched over.
Any ideas?
I use maps a lot for daily commute. For me the map gets GPS lock nearly instantly. I live in the Midwest so terrain is not a factor, and my home and work locations are not impacted by tall buildings, so I have a very easy case.
Have you tried some other apps that check number of satellites your GPS is locked to?
It's possible it is a hardware problem too.

I haven't tried any GPS specific apps other than the navigation apps. I used to use those years ago but not recently. It happens in various places. I live in NH so I could be in the city for a bit and then out in the middle of nowhere with not much around later on. Seems like it happens no matter where I am. I'll get an GPS app and see whats going on with the satellites though, thanks!
Having the same issue since monday after installing latest update update to my OP6T. Can't use any navigation app....
Since I've gotten the phone, I've had issues with the GPS. Gps aiming me in the wrong direction, telling me that I'm on the perpendicular roads and all kinds of crap. Sometimes I'm on the highway and it'll think I got off at an exit. But I didn't! So now it's rerouting me then it realizes that I'm actually on the correct road. So it reroutes me again. All while I'm traveling 60, and every precious second counts.
How can I get the calibration screen back?
To me this sounds like an intermittent fault with the GPS. Hardware problem.
First thing I do as soon as I get any GPS problems with an Android:
I install GPS Status from the playstore : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2
Just start the app, then use your GPS and often the problem is gone. It's worth a try!

Sometimes it's not necessary to use GPS-Status all the time. You can try to delete the app maybe your problem is still gone. Anyway, nice to know that you are able to use your GPS again!
There is a problem with the 6T Gps for sure. I tested two Oneplus 6T devices. Both work 100% . Gps is very nice most of the time. If I am on call I loose Gps lock and I need to terminate the call to get Gps location back. It's not app specific as it happens in all gps apps. Even gps status looses lock. It happens always in the same place. Unfortunately it's near my home. I have no idea how to solve the problem. I tried Note 3/S8+/S7 - none have this problem. Most people have no idea what I am talking about as it's location specific. Anyone else has seen this problem ?

Had a 6T and a friend also has one. The GPS is definitely crap.
It has lock in an open field. But if you are in a city, or there are various roads around you, good luck!
Managed to already do like 30km of a detour on foot thanks to it. It also caused Waze to tell me wrong directions.
I did check other phones, like a P10, and an S7 Edge, and a Note 4 (lol). They all had like full green signals, while the 6T struggled to achieve mid-range reception. There is something wrong with the antenna, or the gain, something. Hardware/build wise. I'd just get a OnePlus 7 or 5T (if someone can't wait). This is clearly something OP can't/won't fix. It's just not possible.
There was a site where they tested GPS lock... shame they didn't do one for the 6T.
Something is more than likely wrong with the phone itself. I have driven 10k+ miles in cities, country, desert freeways with no civilization for miles with this phone. I have never had a GPS issue. If it did have one, I'd be pissed since I'm a ride share driver and I go back to California on a regular basis visiting family from Las Vegas.
If you're rooted with magisk you can try installing the Global Optimized GPS File Replacer module
I use GPS constantly to handle traffic and the 6t works fine for me both in the city and out in the suburbs. No issues.
I will say maps recently changed something such that if it expects you to exit, but you stay on the highway, it shows you going down the exit for a few hundred feet until it realizes you aren't exiting. But that's a Google thing not a 6t thing.

Same exact problem, occurring only near my workplace. Consistently, on all versions of OOS so far. If I remember to start GPS Locker before opening Maps or Waze, it is much less likely to happen but it has happened twice even that way. Never had this issue with any other phone.

I am still fighting with this issue. Just did a big install in my car and I have use Android Auto when driving and it's even harder to fix when it happens. Have to go back into the phone and launch the GPS fix app and hope the GPS starts moving on the head unit screen. It's very, very annoying.
GPS works great for me. I have only used custom ROMs so not sure how it works in stock. But using microg and osm+ I have never really had any issues. Using a GPS locking app such as GPS locker seems to help. Using Google apps for location is not working for me all the time beings how Waze requires Internet access to find locations. And beings how I use t mobile service is not available in most of western Washington. Even when using GPS locker I never have lost lock once GPS was locked. There has been two times I had to use the update a-gps from the GPS test app. If using microg local gsm seemed to be the best back end for me.
