I bought a used MyTouch 4G on Craigslist yesterday, it was already rooted and had MIUI installed on it which I did not like at all. I installed Virtuous Unity 2.37.0 on three other MyTouch 4G's before and didn't have any problem with Wi-Fi on all of them, everything is working great and I LOVE this Virtuous Unity ROM. This particular phone will not connect to Wi-Fi, no matter what I do. It says "connecting" and then "error".
First, I opened the phone and checked all cables and they are all plugged in properly. Then I downgraded from the Panache Gingerbread Radio to an older radio that is working great on both my other MyTouch 4G's with Virtuous Unity 2.37.0. It is radio 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M. I still have the problem with Wi-Fi turning on, then turning off and then Wi-Fi shows "Error". I don't have a SIM card in the phone but I was doing the same with another phone, no SIM card and Wi-Fi worked flawlessly, so I doubt that has anything to do with it. Under Wi-Fi Mac Address in Hardware Information it shows "Unavailable". Does anyone here have any other ideas that I could try? Thanks !!
The radio doesn't have anything to do with WiFi.
On the other hand, looks like either WiFi module is physically bad, or the Android drivers fail to work with it. First step - you can try reinstalling MIUI and see if WiFi starts working. If it doesn't - the phone might just be faulty.

Jack, I will try to reinstall MIUI tomorrow and see if WiFi works. How could I get WiFi drivers for this phone that work with the custom ROM? Where is the WiFi module located at? Is it on the top part (where the cameras and the power button are located on) or on the bottom (main) part of the phone? I am fairly familiar with the "insides" of this phone and I have replaced quite a few top boards because of faulty power buttons (and this one is going out too, so it would be ok if the WiFi module is located there). I really hope that the phone is not bad I was going to give it to my son for his birthday, he has been wanting one of these MyTouch 4G's for a while
The WiFi drivers that come with custom ROMs should work, the only reason for them not to work would be - again - faulty WiFi connectivity device onboard. I'm not sure which device the phone uses or where it's located on the PCB (it might not be a separate module, but on the main PCB). I looked at the disassembly video and saw 2 WiFi antenna cables connecting from the lower board to the upper board, so if WiFi antenna is on the upper board - it means that the chip is on the main PCB and not replaceable.
Since not all drivers are written the same, and devices sometimes don't lose the functionality completely and become "crippled", there is a chance that a specific driver might work with specific faulty board, while another driver wouldn't. It's a rare case, but not impossible. If that's your case, you can try several different ROMs and see which of them work.
ok, I wiped and installe MIUI and when I turned on Wi-Fi, the phone kept restarting. I put Virtuous Unity back on it and the problems with Wi-Fi are still there. It's frustrating I might download a few more ROMs and see if one of them might work.
ya i had this problem awhile back with virtuous unity 1.31 and another rom, cant remember which one tho, but it was just the rom so as soon as i went back to cm7 everything was good again, and so i just waited for the next release of vu and sure enough it worked

When you flash after a full wipe, before you turn wifi on or do anything, go to rom manager and fix permissions and reboot when done. After then turn on wifi.

ok, I reflashed the Virtuous Unity 2.37.0 ROM, I fixed the permissions, rebooted the phone and it's still doing the same I am really frustrated, I was going to send that phone to my son today
Does anyone have any other ideas what I could try? I'm at the end of my ropes here. My son doesn't have a data plan, so Wi-Fi is essential for him to be able to browse the internet when he's at home.

The last thing I would think to do will be to unroot the device and flash the stock 2.2 pd15img.zip. But I might be wrong.

I have noticed as well that the Front Facing Camera doesn't work either. UGGHHHH. I think I might order a replacement PCB board with the power button, cameras etc. Maybe that'll fix the Wi-Fi issue too besides all the other issues I'm having. I had a similar problem with the FFC before and after I replaced the PCB board with the power button, cameras etc. the FFC was working again.

I just bought a Tmobile version (USA) HD2 and got it SIM unlocked to use on at&t.
This is what I did:
1. Installed the HSPL3.
2. Flashed to the latest radio 2.12.50.02_2
3. Installed various TMOUS compatible ROMs. On WM ROMs the phone works great. But my motive is to get android running smoothly.
Then I used two different SD cards to run various android versions. Froyo starts fine but only works good on WiFi. As soon as I insert the att SIM card, and the moment some download progress starts, the phone reboots after a few seconds. Not only reboot is a problem but also the phone cannot start and stuck in boot. I have to manually restart after taking the battery out for about 30secs.
I am posting this here because I have trying to use Android versions from this forum and the TMOUS forum. I believe this forum has more potential to solve my problem given the number of active members are more.
If you have a solution, please share.
Thanks
AJ
Did u try switching to 2g only or in some builds GSM only hd2 wont work with at&t 3g.
Yes I did try that too.

Roms, Radios and Android
I have tried several diff roms and radios with android and the best combo I have found is radio 2.07.50.27 with Core Cell v3 rom and this Android version, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=736545
For this version of Android all works except when you have wifi on and the phone goes to sleep it will occasionally get the black screen of death. If I turn wifi off before the phone goes to sleep, I have no issues.
Also I have used several diff Android builds with this rom/radio config with positive results.
I can't get data on my GSM, only via WiFi.
APN page in settings is totally blank. Nothing there. Is there a way to manually enter an APN?
I'm stumped.

Nope it works fine with or without wifi.....IE... Edge works just fine and wifi works just fine. Again, the sod only occurs when wifi is left on, when the phone goes to sleep, and even then it only has happened a few times.

Did exactly as your config:
Radio, Task 29, Cell ROM, hard reset, Matt Android:
No problems on Wifi
Switched to Edge(att) and as soon as data download starts, the phone shuts down. It happens almost every time I turn the Google maps ON.
You are sure that this is not happening also under Windows Mobile?
For me, it did. Turned out to be a defective GSM/WCDMA chip and mainboard of the phone had to be replaced. The same for another forum member with a HD2.
Also, look over to the Desire forum. They have the same problem, and always, replacing the mainboard helped out. Seems to be either some kind of production fault or damage due to overheating (phone generally gets very hot when using EDGE/3G).

I got my HD2 from T-Mobile here in Germany. I just installed Stock-ROM an uninstalled HSPL, called up T-Mobile service and they gave me a replacement.
So I guess T-Mobile in the U.S. is doing it also that way. The other way would be to call HTC directly and describe them the problem and tell them you already have installed the most current ROM version and already did a hard-reset. Otherwise they will instruct you first to do this.

Damn! first time ever I have had problem with a phone bought over Craigslist.
I have had a half a dozen totally stock mytouch 4gs that will run perfectly fine but about 4-6 times a day I will pull the phone out of my pocket and it will be totally unresponsive to the power and trackpad buttons. No led no button lights or anything. To get it back to normal I have to pull the battery and reboot. I just loaded virtuous fusion 1.0.6 and the problem persists.
I've tried factory resets, formatting the sd card, new sim card, turning off screen animations, clocking the cpu higher when the screen is off, and running with no apps and no google account set and none of that has helped. The only common thing between all the phones is my number and google account and it still happened after a factory reset without signing into google.
Has anyone else had this issue? Am I just extremely unlucky?
I just loaded loaded the 26.08.04.30 radio we'll see if that helps...

At one point I thought that too. I thought "theres no way they sent me SIX dud phones in a row." So I wiped my sd card and did a factory reset without signing into google or anything and loaded no apps and it still did it.
I noticed though that when I pull my sim card out and use it in my other mytouch 4g(which works perfectly fine with that sim) this phone will not show this issue without the sim in it. So I started thinking it might be the radio as I've tried a different sim card and that didn't work.
This is my first day with the new radio so I will report back with my results.
Well that didn't work. It just SODed on me twice in a half an hour.
Should I try flashing the other radios or CM7 or something? I'm wary of flashing too much as I have the dreaded M4G2E emmc serial.
i also have the latest radio but still get this problem every once in a while, i almost wanna say i started noticing this after i started flashing different radios tho, first the 26.08.04.30 radio then the newest 26.09.04.26 radio

I noticed today that if my phone becomes unresponsive and I plug it in the charging light will come on and I can boot the phone without pulling the battery. It does a full boot too not a fastboot. For some reason though if I do this it will SOD on me way quicker than usual.

I think that is the issue your EMMC. I had this problem with my phone, then one time it happened when I pulled the battery it bootlooped and CWR showed me that lovely error... be careful. Wish we would know if your other phones had the M4G2E as well. My current phone has the other chip and I have never once had the SOD like I did on my old chip.
Ok guys, I know that there are posts about random reboots but it seems non have a solid solution. My Hd2 has started doing these annoying reboots for about a week. I was using Tyweens NexusHD2 2.9 and all of a sudden reboots started. So I switched to Typhoon CM7 3.5.7(currently on phone now). Reboots still occur. So I did Task 29, wiped sd card, plus clean install of Typhoon CM7 3.5.7. Phone still reboots. It actually rebooted during setup. I even changed from Magldr 150/5(suggested) to 200/45 thinking it was memory related. Still rebooting. I have noticed it does it more when WiFi is on. Is there something with the latest Android 2.3.5 and Wifi? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No not at all.
I'm having the exact same problem... but strangely now even when I try older gingerbread builds, it does the same thing. Its only been recently, too... I've had the phone for a while and I don't remember it doing this.
I can have the, same build and same gps libs on my wifes hd2, and hers won't reboot. Mine will.
I even went as far as swapping out my mainboard with another one I had from a cracked screen issue... and that didn't solve the reboots.
I can't figure it out. It must be gingerbread and certain phones. Ive tried 2.3.5, 2.3.4 and 2.3.3 and they all are now rebooting. I don't know why its only been lately, too. The, only thing that solves it for me is running Tytungs NexusHD2 ROM v1.9 Froyo based. I can even add the latest agps fix and don't have any reboots. Only thing I really miss from gingerbread is the DSP bass boost which makes a huge difference for my bluetooth audio via my car.
Remains a frustrating mystery to me.

Rafdroid is a Froyo based ROM - same with the NexusHD2 v1.9g build that I'm using and so far no problems.
But when using any gingerbread (sense or non-sense) / CM7 build, I am getting those random reboots. Sometimes so much to the point where the phone is unusable. Then there are times when I could go hours without any. I thought it was something related to 2.3.5 since that's right around the time things started going strange, but like I noted - I've downgraded to 2.3.4 and 2.3.3 - and the same thing is happening. I used to use Hyperdroid GBX 7 for months without issue... now when I load it, it gives the same result. Same with Hyperdroid GBX v12, Hyperdroid CM7, Typhoon, stock bravo based CM7 Nightlies, AmericanAndroid, NexusHD2 Gingerbread version or anything Gingerbread based - period.
It also seems coincidental that the reboots started right around the time when Tmobile issued a bulletin asking for user input about recent unusual high battery draining with mobile data. I really haven't followed up and I don't know if it was determined what was causing it for some users but I am thinking maybe it could be possibly related. I can't explain why my wife's phone can run the exact same ROM and not experience the same thing yet mine does. It seems like an isolated issue - I don't see a lot of people complaining about the same issue lately. Maybe it has something to do with a specific mainboard revision/manufacturing date and some kind of over sensitivity to mobile data power output or something. As I noted in the prior post, I did switch out the mainboard with another one that I had laying around. I did take note of the revision manufacturing date stamped on the board, and they were identical. And both experience the identical problem. My wife's HD2 was bought 3rd party from a private owner at another time separate from when the 2 HD2's I have on hand were purchased. Perhaps she has a different revision/manufacturing date.
The two mainboards that I am having a problem with have a date of 2010/03/16 - they are both identical.
I would take apart my wife's to check her date and am willing to bet it's something different, but I've had really bad luck picking apart these HD2's the few times that I've done it. I've broken wifi coaxial cables and ripped flex cables. The date is stamped on the bottom of the mainboard.

I am wondering if specific phones that run Gingerbread are experiencing this lately because of this:

Like I noted - perhaps it has something to do with an oversensitivity to 3G mobile data power output, etc.

OK, I can now pretty much confirm my original hypothesis about the mainboard. I have switched it out with one that was manufactured in late 2009 according to the timestamp on the board, and that's eliminated this problem for a while now with Gingerbread entirely.
The exact problem is beyond me, but unfortunately I stick to my guns that it's a hardware issue. Not sure why it would affect Gingerbread so much more than Froyo but my guess would be it has something to so with mobile data power management or something of the sort.
So for those saying that turning 3G off counteracts this rebooting effect, try a good Froyo build to keep your 3G connectivity. The reboots didn't happen nearly as much as they did wile running Gingerbread for me (although I would get 1 or 2 every few days).
Unless you can get your hands on another mainboard... or another phone.
Replacing my HD2 entirely for now wasn't an option for me... it's the only "Android" phone that I can run with the grandfathered 5.99 Tmobile web. Any native Android phone is identified by tmobile from its IEMI and forced to upgrade to a smartphone data plan to work with mobile data. They just happen to allow legacy (less than WP7) Windows Phones work with that old data plan, which is what the HD2 is.

I then flashed Darkside's rom with the new 3.5 sense and my 4g connectivity just didn't work anymore...I think I may have used rcmix tweaks and tried to make the "4g" symbol pop up. The problem is I get the "4G" signal on top for maybe a second then it will drop for about 15seconds then it would repeat. I figured if I upgraded to 2.3.4 stock and lose root it would erase the issue but nope...still same issue.
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix the connectivity issue? I can't use T-mobile's network for data anymore.
Take the tweak off and try removing battery and sims for a minute and re boot up

I have found nothing to fix this as of yet. I tried going back to stock but still same issue. Called T Mobile.... had them reset the connection for me still nothing its on this phone's end...
That Rom was wonderful though...fast and smooth.
Im in nyc BTW so I have constant signal and 4g.

and the rom is still wonderful...Ive been running it since initial release and never had a problem with lost or poor data connections. I would try maybe redownloading the newest version of the rom and full wipe(excluding SD) then install it again. if the problem still occurs, maybe you could try switching up your radio
I think its a radio issue to be honest. I booted both phones into bootloader. Radio 26.03.02.26_M is on for both..One phone is still on darkside's rom and the other is stock froyo...any advice?

whoops well enjoy the free thanks lol meant to hit the quote button. the radio thread is linked in my sig, click on it and itll take you there with instructions on how to change it. Im on the stock radio as it works best in my area, while a different radio might work better in your case. give the panache radio a shot, thats my next best radio to use
*edit* the instructions on the thread require adb. if you dont know how to use it, just rename the file to PD15IMG.zip, put it in the root of your sdcard, and reboot the phone into your bootloader. itll recognize the file and prompt you to update, hit yes
Just finished flashing the panache radio no luck still dropping connection...I was wondering if you knew which radio would work best in nyc? I'm going through the whole list now.. Thanks again for your help.

I really have no idea about NYC lol, just continue through the list until you find the best one. but teejay is right, itll only show 4G if data is actually being sent or received and show 3G while idle. just confirmed it on my phone
I was having problems with data connectivity tonight too on the darkside rom. Tried toggiling data on/off and a couple reboots, but nothing fixed it. Flashed to cm7 and data's working fine...

Thank you.
Thanks for the info guys..Im in a constant 4G area in NYC. I barely ever went below 4G but thats not the problem it's the data disconnecting but I will try to flash CM7 and see if it helps any.
Just wanted to update my thread...I have downgraded, upgraded stock roms etc...just flashed royal ginger 3.0 and kept darkside's rom on my other phone...
My conclusion is this is t-mobile's issue due to me changing plans and they haven't configured my plan correctly...

Ah I see
MyTouch HD (Black) - DarkSide Sense 3.5 v3.3.0/Demonspeed v7/Beats Audio/Bad Screen (DAMMIT)/Good Emmc
Never posted in these forums before, since I've never suffered any problems with my HD2 until now. So I will post it my way.
Background info:
I have been using tytung's Android ROMS since he was developing Froyo, starting with MAGLDR. Since then I've been constantly upgrading to his next releases. When cLK eventually got stable (around the latest stable GB releases I think), I switched over to that bootloader. Not having any problems. When ICS finally got it's HWA fully working I switched over to this. I had never encountered any problems with my phone ever, which I am greatly thankful for... That was until now.
My problem:
Approx a week after installing tytung's NexusHD2 ICS v2.7, I started having problems with the phone's data connection in general. When I turn on the phone, it MAY get signal to my data carrier. Sometimes I do, other times I don't. I can try to put the phone in "Plane mode", and back to normal. But that has the same effect as when i turn off/on the phone. Other times when the signal bar shows that I either have full or 50% signal (two dots), I am not able to call, send sms nor browse the internet at all. WTF!? I have tried disabling the WiFi but this has no effect. When I search for data providers(carriers?), I may find all of them after two minutes of searching, I'll find none OR it will search for ever and never come to any conclusion.
Searching:
I have searched through nearly the whole developement thread, and also searched through this Q&A thread, but I can't find anyone who suffers the exact same problems as me. There are some threads and problems similar to mine, but none of their "fixes" has killed the problem for me.
What I have tried:
- Tried the WiFixerFree-solution
- Tried different (older) kernels
- Tried flashing older tytung releases (2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6)
- Did a fresh install
- Extending the system partition (in case of bad blocks)
no success
I don't think this has anything to do with tytung's newest release. It's just weird that this recently started happening, especially after working so good for so long. Does anyone have any clue on what I can do now?
Disassemble your phone and make sure the antenna tabs are touching the contacts,I did this and sure enough one was not touching. After reassembling, full signal was restored.

Omg found the stupidest solution to this irritating one week-long problem.
I tried to extend the system partition even further. Weird that this solution rarely have come up as an option in the forums.
Hope this is helpful to anyone else who may suffer the data drop-problem.
EDIT: Nope... Just a temporarily solution. I can't understand why this should have something to do with the hardware, when I haven't done anything that could harm the phone in any way. But I'll do it asap, and report back. Thank you for the tip.
The 3g connection not working and I can't even use the gprs and I can't enter APNs to let the phone access the internet please please please help me
Now I can use the internet only through the Wi-Fi connection!!!!

Any good news? I have this problem also, after flashing 2.7. I have restored my HD2 back to my previous backup, but still suffering this problem.
The 3G/H signal jumps between 0 ~ 4 bars, but most of the cases it has 0 bar, then switches to edge. If the internet get disconnected, it cannot reconnect automatically. have to turn off data and back on to connect to the internet.
I flash the latest radio, no help. reflash the sd card, no help. reformat the phone, no help.
The last thing i want to try is to part my phone and reconnect the data antenna

if nothing helps/i break my HD2, then it is time to buy a new phone.
Reporting back. Just installed int2ext+, and can report back that after only 3 minutes of use that my data dropped... again. I were not able to call, and neither send sms or anything.
I will get the needed tools to disassemble my phone and TRY to fix the connections. When this is done I will report back again.
Thanks for all tips I have gotten so far! I love this community!
Fffffffffffffffff
NAH! Just disassembled my phone and straightened up the pin that was the problem for this guy
After 2 minutes of uptime, the signal dropped to two bars, then after ten more seconds it dropped to zero... Now it is back to "normal", doing random bumps from 0, to two to four bars. Soooo... f*uck
The pins were my problem, I only have data dropout when going into the market or sending/receiving MMS's now.
i have similar problem too.after using wifi tethering. 3g IS not working anymore till reboot. sometimes 3g automatically change to 2g and vice versa
Any solution?
