Ok I had gotten board with the lack of wifi and decent web browser on the Treo 650 that I decided to make the move to the 8125. I knew about the speed difference and some of the other issues discussed in these forums because I researched the device for months before making the move. Therefore I wont say much about that. Unfortunately I have a few issues that I can't seem to find answers for in this forum and I was hoping other users out there could help.
1. Is there any way of making the navigation pad useful? I cant access anything on the taskbar and it would be great if I could. I installed magic button so I can close apps and switch back to home when I want. Furthermore there is almost no documentation on how to use the nav pad. All application instructions say tap the icon. It's very convenient to have one handed use. for example i have yet to figure out how to get back to the location bar in Pocket IE so I can enter a url without having to tap the screen.
2. Is it common that some applications just freak out when you switch to landscape mode (scroll bars not working and such)?
3. As mentioned I installed magic button but is there an application that will pop up a list of running tasks so I can switch between them easily with the navigation pad.
4. Backup. I may be very wrong on this but I fear that active sync does not actually backup my entire device like palm does. Could someone clear this up and if I'm correct is there a way for active sync to do this. I have more programs on this device than what is on my add/remove prog screen.
5. Notification reminders. I see a feature to have the led for a period of time but it would be nicer if it could be set to play its sound also. Like the pagers of old.
6. Notification of lost service. This phone never tells me I have no cell service. Last thing I want is battery draining searching or worse assuming I have service and miss all calls.
If anyone could provide some info on the above it would be a great help. i have already found many other programs that make up for the lacking features. Below is a list of what I have installed please make any suggestions you think would be helpful.
1. AnthaVPN - easiest and fastest to install
2. TN520 by mochasoft
3. Pocket Putty SSH client
4. Eyes On Call - Callfilter like program with many features still limited but the developer is very quick in implementing suggestions.
5. Info sharp - same developer as above but this provides sms capabilities that are very impressive. He almost has chat style sms with the way this program works.
6. OMAPclocker - for clocking to 220. I actually see the difference.
7. IM+ - Sametime/AOL instant messenger client.
8. Info apps I have Metro, Ereader, Bdicty, VadeMecum
9. TCPMP
10. Registry Wizard
11. Calc98 - the built in calc app is a joke.
12. Xpressmail - dont care what anyone says this app does what it says it will do. Pushes email to your phone.
Thank You
- Richard
Hey everyone, I just got my DVP in the mail today, first time wp7 user. I've been trying to find some apps for it that may be useful and haven't had any luck.
First I've thought about some sort of tile that lets me control the wifi. If you move around a lot like I do, you don't want to have to enter settings and turn on the wifi then look for a network, select, then go back you what you were doing. Or if you just want to save batteries and only turn it on when you need it, then turn it off again.
Has anyone seen anything like this yet?
Thanks

Unfortunately there is not a "wifi switch" app. And our phone is not supported by developers so we do not have any homebrew made for our phone...........yet. I still hold out hope
A live-tile to toggle WiFi activity is a great and very useful idea, as I am also constantly changing it. It's not exactly an issue specific to the Dell Venue Pro, you might have much better luck asking in the main WP7 development section, someone just might take you up on your idea there.
in the meantime just pin the settings tile to the start screen for fast access
I just bought an Acer W500 some weeks ago & already got Win 8 running on it, but after a while I found some inconveniences & need help to fix them
1. How can I turn the screen off without going to sleep/hibernate mode?
2. Is there any other good on-screen keyboard with thump & swipe style? & can also be opened or moved in-game?
3. How to set every folders layout into Tiles for easy touching? I have to set it everytime I open a new folder
4. Im using Firefox & I did re-config it for touch compatibility but zoom gestures still arent seem to work. Pinch in or out only make the font smaller or bigger, not zoom the entire page like IE 10
5. Is there any ways to bring back the cursor while touching like in win 7? I find it more compatible with games & stuffs. Cuz in most of the games, I had to double touch to choose something
6. How can I get another win7 PCs to connect to my tablet via wifi networks? I did change both PC to the same workgroup, set a password but it just keep saying my tablet is not accessible
Any help would be appreciated

cant help with most of that but as for networking, go to the networking sharing centre, click on the homegroup if setup, then change the various network settings, pay careful attention to setting like password protected sharing.
To be honest ive not been a fan of the networked usage of homegroups so it might be worth while turning that off....
Hi,
First of all, thanks for great set of resources! I was rooted an up and running with market in no time.
I am planning to use the Nook as a home automation controller, where the interface is presented through a webpage. For that, I am going to have it mounted and constantly powered-up.
So, my question is - how can I disable screensaver to have the Nook show the browser 24/7?
Also, is there any simple way to show contexts of the browser window without the navigation buttons? (If not, no worries - I can put something together quickly in PhoneGap or similar).
Thanks!
Bumping for interest - has OP/anyone found a solution to this? I'm going to have a tinker with the sys files in the next few days to see if I can manipulate those, will post any positive results.
I'm looking for always-on functionality as part of a live bus timetable / weather station project I'm 75% through.
For those interested, I'm running a simple PHP server pulling data from London's TFL API and the UK MetOffice's Datapoint API and displaying the page in Dolphin.

Hi, I am quite interested in your project and was wondering how you got on with this.
Basically I am looking to have a calendar + weather page up constantly on in my rooted Nook Simple Touch. I have managed to get rid of the screensaver but it still goes into sleep mode after a while. Also would like to get some direction on how I could do my own PHP based page because most of the calendar apps out there dont seem to report weather

I implemented the server side part of this weather app
http://www.mpetroff.net/archives/2012/09/14/kindle-weather-display/
also made the following changes
http://www.shatteredhaven.com/2012/11/1347365-kindle-weather-display.html
Getting the image on the nook is a different story. I tried using crond to wget or curl the image from the server to the screensaver folder so I could have other info graphics rotated throughout the day. I was unable to get the image via wget and unable to get cron working. Any suggestions... (besides having a browser open 247)
here is another example

Refresh?

Hi, kudos for the progress so far.
I take it you couldn't just use another device to FTP the file to the nook every so often?
I was hoping to do a very similar thing with my spare NST but unfortunately my coding skills are not up to that level. You mention that you were trying to populate the screensaver folder with the image to be displayed, would there be any way to automatically make the NST wake up every few hours to refresh this image (assuming you can get the image there in the first place)?
I think that the better way to do this all is to write an app.
The app could use either an ImageView or a WebView.
You could easily make this work directly without a proxy or a server.
You wouldn't have to play around with screen timeout/wakeup,
This is going to be hard wired powered?

The more I think about this, the nook simple touch might have to be charging.
I've done something very similar with my nook showing a custom weather listing in a fullscreen Dolphin browser. Though I have a problem with it not running for more than a day or so before the browser stops refreshing anymore. Have you experienced this? I'm currently looking into some way to kill/restart the browser on schedule perhaps.
Also, how did you get the browser in landscape mode? I can't find that anywhere.

I use this to set the orientation: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mah.screenrotationlock
OB
Sent from my HTCEVOV4G using Tapatalk 2
Another way to set orientation is if you have an application that only does landscape.
Switch to the landscape app, home out of that, go to the application that does both.
It should stay in landscape mode.
I have an assortment of apps, some portrait only, some landscape only, some both orientations.
By jumping briefly to a landscape only or portrait only app you can set the orientation for subsequent apps.
Thanks for the help guys!
I've got a web server running on my NAS serving a custom page for me. The browser launches fullscreen on boot up via some auto start app. After 5 min, the page redirects to an all black page for a second, then an all white page for a second (to clean up the display), then back to the original page with any new information on it.
This works well except for two issues.
1. On boot up, there's no way to avoid the first lock screen. After unlocked, it doesn't come back, but it's always there on startup. This wouldn't really be an issue except...
2. The browser stops loading the page after a while. I can hit refresh and it goes through the motions, but the page isn't updated. It can take a couple of days for this to happen. Restarting the nook solves this. I confirmed that the page is still served normally to other devices (not a web server problem). I would just have the device auto restart at 3am or something, but then the lock screen would always be there.
Do you guys have any ideas about how to correct this or at least work around it?
I can't even try other browsers because this is the only one I've found that displays full screen.
Any updates on this?
I wonder if there's a way to have a cron job kill and relaunch the browser every once in a while to get past the freezing issue you'd mentioned. Or just have the cron job kill the browser every once in a while and relaunch it, pointed at a new information display page.
Even better would be if there was way to bypass the need for a web browser and interact directly with the e-ink screen buffer as can be done on rooted kindle devices. (I can't post a link, but google search "Tools Eink Framebuffer Update Trigger" to find the kindle framebuffer commands)
Yeah, I worked directly with the screen output on my kobo, which worked well, but it was more of a pain to make changes. That might be because I'm more familiar with php and css than python and screen blit-ing. Having android to work with makes it much easier to expand functionality by just downloading an app and using my fingers, instead compiling software and ssh-ing in for everything.
Speaking of which, it looks like my problem is solved. I installed tasker and set it to kill the browser at 3am and start the browser at 3:01am. Thanks all.
What about google play apps for weather? Most of the apps I have used so far have had contrast issues since they are designed for color screens. Does anybody know of good apps that display the current weather info and forcast data in an eink friendly color scheme?
As far as the going to sleep issue, the apk listed in the second comment here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-touch/general/fridge-calendar-t3057759
worked without issue for me, so that problem has mostly been solved.
Try this: electricsign app
Apologies for the resurrection, but for those looking for a digital low power / e-ink info display this might just do it.
This app will do the trick if a static jpg of a web page updated at an interval will do (set to output a jpeg in the custom screensaver folder on rooted nook)
Electricsign android app: (search electricsign on the play store - I can't post a URL here yet).
Leave the WiFi on and set the screensaver timeout.
The source code is on github also (google.it ).
I can never find the app because I always think it's called electricsheep.
Hope this helps someone...or me in the future.
Hi future me, the app is called electricsign, not electricsheep. You'll thank me next time you forget. From your past self bored at a ceildh BC your gf doesn't want to dance.
electricsign looks like the ticket!
I have loved Android for years, and have a Cube T9 that has been my primary tablet. I purchased the Remix Ultra with the expectation of improving my business productivity.
So far underwhelmed would be the operative word, even though it is a beautiful tablet keyboard combo, very well made. and the price was right.
I think the most disappointing thing is there are so few apps that have the ability to become smaller and actually float on the screen and give you a true multi-tasking enviroment. And some of my favorites I have used for years ...like Quickpic, lose their settings entirely once installed to the Ultra. They work, but only one way ...no setting to adjust anything within the app itself.
I may go back to version 1.5, although I am thinking it will be the same, other than the fact I would have the more traditional Droid settings options, and a widget to tell me that the app I am using does not use phone mode.
I welcome all comments. I really want to love this OS.
Thanks,
BamaPanda
In searching the features of 2.0, I have found that swiping down from the top of the application when in full screen gives the option of the phone sized window ...on some apps.
The Quickpic app. I mentioned above is one that does shrink down to the phone window, and oddly ...when in the phone sized option, the settings return. Others I have tried ...such as the Chrome I am typing in ...do not shrink down.
So it looks like I just could be on a quest for a while to get as many apps as can be found that will do the phone windows trick.
Thanks for following. Hopefully my discovery will help others using 2.0.
So since I was able to discover a feature in ver. 2.0, I wonder if anyone knows how to get into developer mode.
I did find a way to access it through Malwarebytes, but would rather be able to access it directly.
This has links to being able install a micro SD card, and then properly removing the card. There is ability to do an unmount of the card in the current setup for settings, but it is virtually hidden.
@BamaPanda - First of all, thanks so much for your interest and support!
Now, onto your issues. I actually still use my Ultratablet, but less so now because of also testing our Remix OS for PC software. For my basic productivity needs, it's been fine. Can you tell me specifically what apps and issues you're having? Maybe just give me 3 more besides the one you mentioned and I'll see if there may be troubleshooting tips I can give you.
Thanks!

That worked. Now that I know that and the pull down trick to get an app (possibly) into phone window mode, I am sure I can continue to work with the OS.
I apologise for getting a bit anxious regarding the tab and its settings/ shortcuts. I had watched videos about all Remix could do, and I think I just expected there to more info out there.

As far as apps, do you know a particular mail app that will do the phone window? The one loaded with version 2.0 is full screen only. The mail app loaded is the same I have used, but if there is one that does the smaller window, it might be good.
Also right now I am using Polaris to take care of word and excel. The actual `Word` and `Excel` apps from Microsoft ...do they do the phone mode?
Thanks. I do hope attention and updates will continue for the Ultra Tablet, as I can see the big interest for the PC application of the OS maybe overshadowing the tablet support a bit.
Hopefully tablet support will continue, especially since there is a Pro tablet in the works.

@BamaPanda -
1) Email apps/windowed mode - Have you checked whether or not you've enabled windowed mode? Go to 'Settings > Applications > find your app' and then click it for 'App info' and deselect Open in fullscreen mode. See if this helps.
2) Yes, they do. Here's a tip to optimize your experience. After you download Word for example, resize it after you open up a document to it's smallest size possible. Then, restart the app. You can now set it in whatever size you'd like moving forward. You may do this with Excel and PPT as well.
3) Ultratablet will continue to receive updates and support from us. I use mine constantly still.
The tablet/keyboard is starting to grow on me. it is a good bit heavier than my Cube T9, but it should be for it's size.
Looks like it will be my back porch/table top wireless tablet of choice. The keyboard is great, response is perfect. I will use my Cube more for handheld use.
Not as fast as the Cube in many ways, but still a great tablet. Build is top notch!
Still learning, and I will post more things I learn in the hints post I made as I move forward.
Thanks for the help and understanding.

@BamaPanda - We did have Widget support for a couple of versions when Remix OS 2.0 just got launched for Ultratablet. However, we noticed that folks just weren't using Widgets much. So, although Widget supporters were very vocal, there wasn't much actual usage. It also takes resources to maintain Widget support. Thus, the PMs made a decision to take this feature out in later releases. Thanks!

Jason..
I watched an older video on keyboard shortcuts done by you.
Is there a keyboard shortcut to awaken the screen from the keyboard once asleep? I had thought the key directly above the 6 was it, but apparently not.
Thank you.
BamaPanda, not sure if you've already noticed this, but the keyboard button with three horizontal lines, located above the '8' key, opens the menu in some apps. unfortunately it doesn't work with quickpics, which is annoying. (i also use it -- i just have to switch to phone mode to access the menu.)
i forget which apps this button works for -- but if you're ever in that situation give it a try. you could also submit feedback to the app developer because this is something they can fix to make their app usable for tablets. sometimes that actually works!
you should probably wait nougat becoming mainstream and chrome os playstore being widely available on chromebooks.then things will become interesting.
