Im looking to grab a cheap windows 7 tablet for testing Windows 8 on.
I will probably (If I like it) get a better/higher spec device later but for now just want something cheap to play with.
So what is the cheapest device you know of atm, either old/new that runs Windows 7 or maybe Vista?

If you're in the UK, even for cheap there's good and bad tablets!
The bad: there's an endless variety of form factors that you can probably obtain to run Win8 on, but the likelyhood of getting a return on value for money is questionable. Most of them are [shipped] from asia, and as such you have to factor in delivery times too. 70% will be between 800x400 to 1024x600, which won't be enough to run the Metro apps.
The good (AFAIK): There are only two relatively inexpensive (below £500) tablets that I'm aware of (the two other good/valued ones are over £500)
below: Zoostorm SL8, Acer Iconia W500/W501 - between £450 to £530
above: MSI Windpad 110w, Asus Transformer 121 - between £579 to £800
Of course you can try looking for the 'below' tablets second-hand; I saw the W500 listed at CEX [online]for £329 (b grade).
So have a search! (Hope that helps).
By the way the W500 is 1280x800 @ 10.1"; so can run metro but won't 'snap'
The Zoostorm is 1366x768 @ 11.6" and can 'snap'
viewsonic viewpad 10 is pretty cheap, the one that dual boots win7 and android. someone is selling one in the marketplace too
dell xt2 on ebay could be had for 500 or less

This is probably the best choice, otherwise there's the Dell Inspiron Duo for $330 over at the Dell Outlet after coupon.
I would go the W500 the AMD fusion processors are better than atom IMO.

The W500's processor performs quite well, I can say from personal experience.
I have told folks in work, and I am going to be running a corporate pilot with quite a few Acer W500s. I have one myself and love it.
I'm tempted by the W500 myself..

Been running W8 x64 on an Inconia Tab for about a week now and I would highly recommend it as a good W8 test platform. MS is using the device themselves in their lab so there is at least a resonable chance that future builds will continuw to work well with it.
Only hardware that won't work correctly is the Bosch accelerometer (the drivers can be manually installed in both the x86 and x64 versions but you W8 automatically disables it with a driver stability warning)
I did swap out the 32GB SSD with an 80GB Intel 310 MSATA. Major pain in the a#@ to get the unit open but I wanted the extra space. With the Intel SSD I'm consistently seeing ~10 second cold-boot times...
Keyboard is kinda sucky but I bought the thing to be a tablet so it wasn't that big a deal to me.
At $498.00 (off Amazon) the price is very reasonable given the hardware it is using.
I'm just fighting the urge to pick up one now. I'm dying to play with Windows 8 on a tablet but patience pays off in the fast moving world of tech. So I figure my gift to myself next year will be a Windows tablet.

I bought it one week ago and upgraded it with 2GB ram + 80GB SSD.
Win8 works quiet well on the pad, and it has the necessarry resulution for the split screen function where a second programm is shown on a third of the screnn size.
thx for the hint. I read very good and very bad ratings for the WeTab. Battery Life has too be very weak and the touchscreen is not very reative i read.

The touch behavior under W8 is excellent in my opinion.
Only the g-sensor isn't working correct at the moment and the light sensor is a bit strange sometimes. Haven't tested Bluetooth & HDMI so far.
I'm using Windows 8, Android 3.2.2, Android 4.0.3 and Ubuntu 12.04 Beta on the tab for testing and application development at the moment.

Have tried it on HP Slate 2 , only not working properly is the N-Trig and it cannot detect your Sim Card for 3G connection.
for now windows 8 is in beta test, i think this problem there are because windows 8 are not final.

Personally I wouldn't buy any tablet hardware currently out, especially for a consumer preview. Wait until fall, when things are finalized and there are some good tablets at reasonable prices, specifically designed for Windows 8. Then you'll be in a far better position to get the best hardware with native support, the features you want, at a price you'll be comfortable paying. Patience is a virtue

dhgate.com have some great value tabs. ~$300 US (with $30 off at the moment) for a 1.66 atom 2gb ram and 32gb ssd.
In my opinion for the price why not go for it, in fact i'm about to.

you can always run android on it or whatever you want if win8 doesn't work out.
I'm going to have a play with one of these then maybe invest on a WoA version when they come out. The Nokia one sounds pretty cool.

If you are looking for something good, then i suggest you wait until the official windows 8 is released or atleast the RC version comes out so that manufacturers and start building tablets optimized for windows 8 that will be snappy, responsive and have long sustaining battery life. It's too early to suggest one right now. Have some patience

ReactOS is an open source windows clone and most of the windows applications work on it ! (MS office, opera, ff, ...) the good news is there is an ARM port of ReactOS - Windows RT equivalent:

ReactOS still has problems to work on real hardware because of many different components but on some PC it works very well (it can be targeted to SGT fix the bugs)
The ARM port is able to run on the SGT but there is still a lot of work to do.
Windows will soon release a Office ARM version for winRT and in order to run any windows application on the SGT a recompile is needed.
and about android there is already a port of android that runs native on windowsne emulation no virtual machine !!)

This runs pretty well even at alpha stage, I tested it in virtualbox in my laptop, and I'll test it on emulator in my SGT soon... they've planned to bring it up to windows 8... hope that everyone interested here will help the fundraising...
I posted this just to keep this thread up, so don't blame me for not saying anything useful...
I think(theory) that it will run very smoothly on SGT, because it only uses 6mb of graphic memory, I tested it with 256mb RAM and 500mb HDD, and it was better than my expectations!

While I applause the developers efforts and certainly see potential benefit..I wonder still if it not more practical to remote desktop as thin client using an app like splashtop for full windows desktop usability?

I have 20 US Dollars for the first person that can port even an alpha of this, and an extra 15 USD to anyone who can fix up our Ubuntu port (everything needed to fix the kernel is available in Samsung's ICS kernel). There are just too many sweet things that we get close to but never actually get.

What is the basis for this statement? Has someone demonstrated any ReactOS code running on a Tegra 2? Is it simply because someone put up that ARM Port section of the wiki? The ARM CPUs represent a wide range of devices. Just because someone decided to put up a blurb about that doesn't mean we are anywhere close to getting a worth while port of ReactOS running on this device.

Perhaps this is the way to go to make this tablet suck less, but I would recommend switching to a windows tablet, either a Rt-based or a x86-based tablet. Back when galaxy tab 2 10.1 came to the stores, I went ahead and got one.
And that was a decision I soon came to regret deeply. Android is simply not comparable to windows, not even on a tablet.
So I went to buy a hp elitepad, running windows 8 pro. This impressed me so much that I also bought an Asus vivotab Rt.
The fact that the elitepad is running x86, means that I now will install virtualbox, and then install android for x86.
And perhaps mac os, windows nt, bsd or Ubuntu. Time will show.
My point here being, it is better to start with a superior os and then install the inferior ones, instead of doing this in reverse.

You really can't compare a weak Tegra 2 processor to a much more powerful Intel processor, based on two totally different architectures, running two totally different OSes, two totally different tablets with entirely different specs... You're comparing a snail to a Toyota sports car.
Try out a Tegra 4 tablet or a Snapdragon 800 tablet... That's some good stuff. Nexus 10 too, Exynos is a beast.

Here's what I'm seeing with this news:
A. Samsung makes Galaxy/Ativ devices which are strikingly similar, possibly use same accessories
B. Samsung makes one device which runs both platforms, but can be purchased as each platform separately, each with slightly different hardware to match a price point (E.G. Galaxy tab $400 with 2GB RAM, Galaxy/Ativ $600 with 4GB RAM, keyboard dock):fingers-crossed: :good:
C. Samsung simply unveils separate devices, but the Galaxy is jailbroken, and since it runs on an Intel chip, Windows 8 can be installed via OEM license.:victory:

AAAAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! ASUS HAS DONE IT! This is the most amazing thing ever, hopefully it's not phantomware (it sure doesn't look like it!). Asus today unveiled the Transformer Book Trio, which runs full Windows 8 on the keyboard dock, and Android on the tablet itself. It actually has two entirely separate systems, but they switch seamlessly. Unfortunately it's not two systems on one processor, meaning if this comes to market, it's gonna cost a small fortune! Anyway, here's the link! :laugh:
I think the trio is the exact opposite of seamless in my opinion.
It is pretty much a windows laptop with a dock for an android tablet which then becomes the screen.
I couldn't work on that. Working on an office document, pull the screen off for some portability at some point, windows and my document are now gone. Thanks for that Asus. That particular scenario could be alleviated with Google docs or similar but there are others problems like it that wouldnt be so easily fixable.
In my opinion. If you want to put two operating systems on the same device then just frigging dual boot. Plenty of atom netbooks used to dual boot between windows 7 starter and android, sisters one does.

Well, as excited as I am for this - I have to say, if the tablet is undocked, and wont run Windows 8, it is a deal breaker for me. If they made it so that I could dual boot Android / Windows 8 off the tablet, plus dock it into the keyboard for WIndows 8 + dedicated GPU, I would be sold, but to only run Android on the tablet is just plain stupid. Ill wait until I can have a true hybrid device that is not compromised. I feel that they are coming, they just need a bit more work by the OEM's
Well yes this stuff is coming but I honestly think being able to dual boot OS is a silly feature for a consumer release product, who wants to be switching operating system just to run [other] apps on another OS? If you want android and windows in one tablet use bluestacks, if that isn't good enough stop fooling around and either get one or the other or pick one that will allow you to configure dual boot yourself.

Samsung is the largest tablet vendor outside of Apple, so it's noteworthy to see what it brings on the Windows side. Ignoring the AIO/laptop varieties, Sammy's sole Windows tablet, the Ativ Tab 3, disappoints at $699 (w/ keyboard cover) and only a Z2760 Clovertrail instead of Bay Trail.
Unless Samsung has more announcements in store, I don't see a Haswell tablet (or even hybrid) model. In fact, there isn't a hybrid except for the Franken-Q slider, which isn't a mainstream model.
If these are all of Samsung's entries for Windows this year, it's a fairly anemic line-up.

I have lurked this forum since the HTC apache days. I understand this is a windows 8 forum, however my question, or thought is regarding installing windows 8 on a tablet that runs android. Now before I get chased out with a broom. Hear me out, this particular tablet runs an intel atom cpu and has 2gb of ram. Makes it perfect for windows 8 and it has a good form factor. The two tablets I have in mind are the Dell Venue 7 and Dell Venue 8 which come loaded with android 4.2.2 if im not mistaken. They seem like a bargain at this point. After reading some reviews they are built nicely and have some impressive specs. Amazing what you can get for under 200bux these days. Now again before I get chased out the room, I love android, however I feel windows 8 would fit my needs much better in the long run. These tablets have better specs than my old netbook running windows 7 on it and that machine is still going strong for me, now running mint linux.
Anyone here exploited the boot loader on these tablets yet? I would love to test one of these with windows 8 on them. It looks like I may purchase two Venue 7's today (one for me and one for the wife), they have similar specs to venue pros offered by dell at double the price.

I know nothing about the device in question, but my chance have you tried an OTG cable and a keyboard? I assume that if it is an X86 it may have a BIOS.
The existing x86 android devices have all had locked out bootloaders preventing boot of anything but android

Hi everyone! I'm not new here on XDA, but i'm new into Windows 10 "mobile" handsets. I've seen a lot of review about several differen models but haven't find yet the perfect one for me. I used to do my everyday tasks with a Galaxy tab S2 (2015) then it broke in a non fixable way. I've decided to change and try with a Windows tablet to see how feels a pc like experience handled. Actually i don't have (and don't want to) a lot of money to invest in a similar product, but i can afford max a 250/300€ device. I know i can't expect a Surface performance for that price, but i just need it to view some streaming movies, surf the web and mainly use Office products to study. Anyway i'm here to ask if you can help me and suggest some of the best or what you think may be the best tablets out there. If may help you, i'll write down some of the key point i wish to have:
- A decent soc/good ram: Again, i know i can't expect much...not even thinking on top performance, but i'll be fine if i'll have a product that doesn't stuck while i'm using it. Otherwise would become too frustrating.
- 8-12 inchs: Preferibly 10, but anything above or below would be fine.
- No dual boot: May reduce storage since i don't mind to use anything than Windows. Really don't need a dual os.
- Brand: I'm open to everything. Really don't mind about the brand (even if it will be chinese) as it respects the above "expectations".
In conclusion, i don't need a "top" product and i'm aware that i can't pretend too much for the budget, but i just need a decent product to accomplish my everyday tasks, nothing more. I repeat, i'm a student so Microsoft Office will be the main use of this tablet, beside web and netflix or similar. I could use a laptop, i know...but i prefer to have something i can carry easily wherever i go. I'd really apprecciate any advice and/or personal experience. Thank you.

tablets are alwayys laggy, even if theyre not at first. browse sites for few days or install some apps and it will start lagging. my fatherbought tablet and doesnt use it at all cuz its so laggy and broken
older used Surface Pro? I'm not even sure what other options there are, that is the only one I ever see.
I Like my Odys Wintab Ares 9.
It still lives after 3 years.. I used it a couple of times at work for a couple of months because the chefs thought Lenovo is good for a Technician too use... You just have too look angry at Lenovo and the Touchscreen cracks !
On my Odys I now need a new screenprotector, it is as if its build by HTC.. You can let it fall, bump against walls and use it in light rain..
And the price was 159€ ..
The only negativ is that it has a storage of only 32GB.. but I have a 128GB SDXC in it..
With a decent bluetooth keyboard and cheap bluetooth Microsoft mouse I prefer it over the too expensive Surface or Lenovo Tablets.. For the difference in Price I bought a Acer Aspire Laptop and took my girlfriend for a fancy diner..
I just got the HP Pro Tablet 608 G1, and it's really snappy. Just updated it to 20H2 and it's even better. Got it brand new on eBay with Miracast/usb/hdmi dock for $89.

These are the three tablets which are available but I don't recommend you to buy any of them.

there are 4gb version widely available
I using tablets many times, and always it was bad idea, they are not reliable and always lag.

I have the enterprise edition with 4GB ram. Got it off eBay NIB for $80.
It has a bunch of enterprise-only features which make it extremely snappy -- like bios editing, rom kitchen, driver customization, and enterprise-only firmware from chip manufactures like Hynix... to name just a few.
So, it isn't low-end by any means. Even came with a USB/ethernet/hdmi/miracast docking station. Found the HP Enterprise Catalog price list from years ago, and it was originally $1,049.
I would recommend a Microsoft surfaces pro 7
