Firstly, thanks to everyone and all the information on this site. It's great to see all the options available for this phone. With that said, I've sucessfully flashed my HD2 with a DL DesireZ v3.3 final ROM on NAND. I followed the guides at the time, but am now wanting to try a newer Gingerbread ROM. I did not flash Clockwork Recover Mod at the time.
My question is if I want to reflash to the new ROM is it necessary to flash the CWM? Or can I just reflash through the MAGLDR?
Thanks
i can only think of a handful of nand roms that do not require cwm, and they're all months old., whilst admittedly i don't look at every roms thread. im pretty sure its a must, , , your options will be massively limited without it.
THanks for the reply. You are correct in that most require it. (At least with the 4ROMS that I considered). I've since installed it, and all is good.

Hi,
There is a new version for all Desire Z of the clockworkmod, just go into rom manager and the update will prompt.
New things are the possibility of going back using the back key (this was not possible before and it was done by pressing down power button), and the possibility of partition your sd card. But why would you like to partition it? Is there any ROM that supports A2SD already??
Can someone please explain to me what is the point of installing these custom ROM-s, out of which most have some kind of bug's or disadvantages over the perfectly reliable and fully working stock ROM by HTC?
In my point of view, HTC has a massive team of developers and testers for developing their software, so it has a better chance to be more reliable and bug free than any custom ROM developed by a small team of developers, who by no doubt must be great at what they do (respect for devoting their time to advance mobile software) but by numbers alone they have a lesser edge on thinking through all the possible bugs and errors in their code.
What are the main advantages a custom ROM gives you that makes you want to replace your stock with it and risking losing some of your phones functionality..?
Thanks for any insightful answers
If you pick the right rom you will have no bugs at all, and a faster more smooth version of the stock rom.
That is all I will say. You need to try them for yourself to really know what its like, but once you do you will never want to go stock again.
I agree,... ALL custom ROMs I have ever used for long periods of time have been "snappier" than the stock ROMs. Some have better battery life, some allow further customisation than stock.
As Lenny said, give it a bash, if it is not for you then you can always revert back.

Well, what if there's a bug in the current ROM for a function that you use a lot and you want to switch to something else that doesn't have that bug ?
What if you want to use different programs instead of the ones that HTC has picked and built into the ROM ?
What if you want to overclock your phone for extra performance and want that function built in there without any messing around ?
As for the number of people thing, although it might only be a few people actually cooking the ROM, but remember that a *lot* more could be involved in writing the applications in the ROM.
Not meant to be an exhaustive list, but those are just a few reasons why you might want a custom ROM.
This is my first Android phone, previously I was on WinMo, and there the custom ROMs were always hugely better than the stock ROMs (more stable, faster, better functionality, etc).

Sorry but I am a newbie of DesireZ and on the XDA forum as well. A few things want to know about this new clockworkmod :
1) Where can I download this new version?
2) I have already installed ROM Manager but never flashed any ROM so far, so how to install this new version?
3) Can you recommend a good ROM for DZ? My main concern is that I can change the system font size, and the 4 function key below can work (I know some G2 ROM not compatible with DZ, especially the 4 keys below)
4) I have also already ENG S-Off and rooted. So I just need to save the ROM in SD and flash it with the ROM manager?
I thank in advance!

Go into ROM manager and it will tell you there's a new version of ClockworkMod available. Then you can flash it from the option within ROM Manager (and reboot into recovery if you want to, just to test it).
I'm really new to all this and so I apologize for a redundant question. If you can lead to to the correct thread or just answer the question that would be wonderful. I installed android on my sisters HD2, not sure which version it's just there. I know it's NAND but to be more specific I don't know which OS. She wants me to put 2.2 Froyo or 2.3 Gingerbread on there and I'm wondering how to do that. The guides I'm reading on here say to go to magldr and then open the ROM on my pc and click the DAF and install it. I thought I installed the right ROM but that file does not exist. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
I expect that your best bet would be to check the Droid nand threads and see if you can recognise the one you used

Go to Settings > About Phone to find all the details you need - the Android version, the ROM version et all. And then decide if you want to load a new NAND ROM or not.
you should install cwm, too. it's one step more but it's worth it and you will have a lot more choice when chosing a rom.
i don't know a up to date rom that is available as a daf flashable version.
full guides on how to install it are in the rom thread most of the time.
Install cwm and then try this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=769026, its one of the fastest rom i have i used so far, one thing tho it doesnt have sense but im sure your youll still like it.
I have just purchased a HD2 aswell and would like to install android gingerbread... i have read through the how-to threads on here 'http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905060' a million times and being the worlds most useless person with a mobile i just dont have the courage to do it as i dont understand none of the terminology etc... could somebody please point me in the direction of a full step-by-step guide for dummies lol
i am currently running on:
flash size: 512mb
OS version: 5.2.21864 (21864.5.0.81)
ROM version: 1.43.405.1 (70124) WWE
ROM date: 10/26/09
Radio version: 2.04.50.22_2
(i believe these are the ones most mentioned in the threads... but mean nothing to me )
i could literally do with the lamens guide with pictures the lot.. BUT any help for a so called 'newb' would be very much appreciated.
thanks in advance
PLEASE HELP .... i have installed maglrd, clockworkmod recovery 1.2.7 etc... then realised i hadnt installed the android itself so i went into the USB mass storage and installed gingerbread from ''NexusHD2-Gingerbread_V3.2a_NAND_(Android-2.3.7).zip'' but there are only 3 files (BOOT, META-INF, SYSTEM) but i cant find anything to run? .... the phone is currently idling in maglrd and im getting rather worried about breaking it... PLEASE HELP
Don't open that zip file. Put the whole zip on your SD, start magldr, choose ad recovery, that will start cwm, in cwm choose install zip from SD - choose zip, that's it.
Hey guys I got a few questions,
1. Well its been a long time since I installed an android ROM on my HD2 so I have no idea what i installed at all. Is there any way finding out ?
2. Are there any new programs/new things that should be installed on an HD2
3. Any thing else you reccomend ?
4. How can i remove everything safely from the android rom i have and the bootloader i have.
5. Are there any good Gingerbread ROMS thats well maintained and has sense or thats actually pretty popular ?
6. Any things you might think i might need to know ? Because last time i logged in XDA was like January and alot probably has changed....
From what I know:
Android ROM version: 2011/02/02 gpc_hd2_gingerbread_v1.5
Bootloader?: by cotulla AMGLDR V1.3
I forgot how to use everything etc etc . Please kindly help me
EDIT: Umm, If possible are there any good stock roms or closest to being a stock ?
Well, for number 1 for me under settings>about phone>mod version it tells me that I am using 'Cope and WarrenB's AmeriCanAndroid', but dunno about the rest. Maybe you should search the forums for gpc_hd2_gingerbread and see what results you find.
I think you can find the answers for you questions in my thread, check it out
thanks if i want to clear everything, even the bootloader how? do i just use the task 29 method where you put a stock rom on the sd card and hold the down volume while on boot ?
IMHO you don't need to do a task29. Just make sure you have the correct Clockwork partition layout for the ROM you are installing (it will be mentioned in the ROM's thread).
If you are looking out for a new ROM, I really suggest you take a look at Typhoon's ROM here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=933951
It needs a 150M System partition and 5M cache partition.
I just purchased an HTC HD2; which came with a dual boot of Windows Mobile and Froyo on the SD card.
I wanted to install CM7; but I'm new to the whole process and I have heard various methods of installing it; either on the SD card, NAND, or RAM?
What are the pro's/con's of each? Which would you recommend?
Go with NAND and MAGLDR.
RAM builds are kinda obsolete now.
SD Card.. uses more battery and cannot mount the phone as USB mass storage.
Latest ROMs, tweaks etc are in NAND.
NAND hands down.

I would recommend trying multiple different ROMs on SD (e.g. CM7, MIUI, Sense 3.0, Sense 3.5 etc.) on SD, then, once you've selected a ROM, flash a similar NAND ROM.
Thanks guys, I appreciate it. I've heard some rumors that NAND has some issues so I wasn't sure.
Is NAND the ROM?
Since I will most likely do a NAND flash, this would be the best guide right? (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893948)
Also, the phone is currently SIM-Locked;I wont be getting the unlock code from the buyer for another day, would I still be able to flash the phone and THEN input the unlock code after without screwing up anything?

yeah, that one guide is great.
I would personally advise you to try out the clk versions, it acts more like a native android device. Also, with clk you will be able to use clockwork mod recovery, which makes things a lot easier.
I'm using AmeriCanAndroid, and I couldn't be happier about it.
But anyway, for sure go for the Nand version, that means that android will be installed as the native operation system, formatting the internal memory and getting rid of windows mobile. You won't need it anymore.
P.s. Just to make things clearer: nand is installing android on internal memory, clk and magldr are types of bootloaders to use and install nand android through.
Sent from my HD2 using my fingers.
I would recommend using a NAND based ROM over an SD. Uses less battery and is smoother running, unless you just have to have WM. And if an issue arises, a NAND based ROM is easy to back up or change out to a different ROM. On your question on unlocking your phone, the process is independent of whether your phone is on WM or Android. The procedure to unlock the phone is based on the IMEI number of the phone and uses hidden features on the phone independent of the OS on board.
Thanks guys. I just had a few more questions,
Is the guide that I posted compatible with a T-Mobile version hd2?
In terms of flashing, are there any big things to be careful about to avoid bricking your phone? (radio, etc?). Would there be any way to salvage a phone if something were to happen?

That's the guide I used to flash my T-Mobile US phone. So it should work for you as well. If something did happen to your phone, you can always flash back to WM. Follow the guide, you shouldn't find that you will brick your phone. As long as you don't flash the wrong radio. US phones use the 2.xx.50.xx versions and EU use the 2.xx.51.xx versions of radio. If you search for the radio thread, it will fully explain this and have the correct/latest radios available for download. Just don't mix them up and you won't brick your phone. Latest radio version for US phones is already in the guide that you posted.

Thanks! The seller mentioned he flashed the latest radio, is there a way to make sure?

Actually, I would recommend this guide. The guide you posted doesn't involve CWM and is thus pretty much useless for modern ROMs.
And the Radio version should be in phone software info (if I remember correctly) under settings.
I think it doesn't matter as far as your sd card is fast enough! I am buying new Tmous HD2 since i don't have to make sd ext for sense Roms and they took 1.5 hours to install on my wwe HD2! Big advantage of sd build comes when you dual boot.
Thanks for all the advice guys. I'm a bit caught up with work so I wont try flashing it till this weekend, thanks again.

Go under Settings then About Phone and you should see a line called Baseband Version and should tell you after the underscore what radio you are using. Mine shows 2.15.50.14 which is the latest for a T-Mobile US phone.
I am lookinng for anyone that might could point me in the right direction od selecting a rom to flash for the HD2 leo. I havent messed with the hd2 much and have a samsung focus that i have been hacking since they first came out. I have been reading up on some things but am still not sure what way would be best. I am not new to flashing roms but am new to the HD2 and ICS. I haven't personally used any ICS builds but I can definitely say flash a NAND Android ROM and probably choose the AOKP build judging purely by the OPs (not AOSP, really no point in that). If you want something different try MIUI ICS builds, I personally never really liked MIUI that much but give it a try.
if you want an ICS rom that is stable use Tytung's NexusHD2-ICS-4.0.3-CM9..its the best one out there.. here is the link:

First i want to thank both of you for replying to my post. I have downloaded the nand tool kit but cant seam to find the drivers for it, i am getting a fed anti piracy error from both the nand tool kit and also from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1090783
I have been reading and looking all about flashing the ICS Cm9 and seams pretty good, the only thing that is confusing me is the the radio. I see that i have to run MAGLDR and then CLK, but am unsure about radio. Here are the other guids i been refering to also about doing the flash.

So when i flash this rom do i have to use the nand tool kit to flash or can i flash just using DLMODE and MAGLDR? Thats the way i flashed my samsung focus rom.
Again thanks for your reply!!
