Hey guys,
Yesterday I got my 3 button download mode working, so now I'm ready to use a new rom, just have a quick question or 2.
Basically I think I have made my mind up on what ROM to use - I'm going to use Darkys steel ROM - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091
So first question is - is this a good ROM to start with? From what I can tell it seems like a fairly simple install process, and has quite a lot of features, so I'm thinking this will suit me well.
Now I understand that this will wipe all my apps, second question is, will all my purchases be available for download still (cause these are saved on my gmail account, right? )
Lastly, also related to apps, is I only have 2 things I want to save from my current phone, that is I want to save my contacts, and I want to save my messages. If I flash with the above ROM, will kies not be able to restore these for me? If so, is there another way to backup and restore these settings before I start flashing?
I think thats all, I'm still at work, so I can't start just yet, but when I get home I'll get started on my android customization journey!
Also a quick thanks to all the contributors to this forum, you guys do amazing work, appreciate it.
Darky's is a great ROM to start with, however the lagfix corrupted my internal SD card and i ended up just getting a new phone because of it. I would assume this is highly unlikely, and possibly due to error on my part, but keep it in mind nonetheless. (EDIT: I could be completely wrong about this, I used other ROMS and flashed different firmwares so its unfair to target this ROM specifically, its just what I happened to be using when my phone screwed up, it might have been unreleted) Yes, you will be able to redownload your purchases, and as for saving your contacts and messges, can you save them onto your SIM card?
Good luck!
I was in a similiar situation not that long ago, and decided to try Darky's ROM as my first ever. His instructions really were incredibly easy to follow, and I did not have any real issues. in fact it took less than 30 minutes to download it all and get it working. overall, couldn't recommend it more (though I haven't tried any other ROMs).
MyBackUp Pro is what I used to back up all my data on my phone (missed calls, settings, etc). Its a paid up, but it's not expensive and I found it worth the money. it also backs up alot of your apps. It will back up your contacts, but Android actually has an export contacts feature to back them up. look in your options in your address book and you will find it.
Excellent, that pretty much covers my questions then! Just got back from work, so I'll give darkys ROM a go and post back! Really interested to see how this turns out
Hi guys,
I'm busy working on a repo of all the apps you'd recommend to be used on AdamG's Oxygen rom. I've gone through most of the Oxygen rom thread and got some suggestions already, but I need a lot more.
Hopefully this will be included in a future Oxygen rom and will just make it easier for people to find things to improve their experience with Oxygen.
Apps so far are:
System
Cyanogen mms.apk (Fixes issues with mms functionality in Oxygen)
adblock hosts (Fixes the hosts issue some people have with adblock)
Gallery3D (For those of you who prefer the 3D gallery)
ROM Manager Free (Everyone needs this)
Gingerbread Keyboard with dictionary (The current keyboard in Oxygen does not support dictionary)
Backup and Restore
Titanium Backup Free (Helps with backing up apps and removing apps you don't want)
SMS Backup & Restore (Useful for when we have an update to flash)
Call Logs Backup & Restore (Useful for when we have an update to flash)
SMS Backup + (added functionality of syncing sms/calls with gmail)
LifeSaver2 (1 app that backs up both sms and calls. Handles large amount of data)
Share and Explore
Bluetooth File Transfer (Fixes the bluetooth pairing issues on AOSP)
ES File Explorer (Browse directories on your desire)
Widgets (Weather/Clock)
News & Weather Widget (Widget that displays recent news and weather)
Fancy Widget Free (Displays time and weather on homescreen)
GO! Weather Widget (Displays time and weather on homescreen)
gTabSiMiClock
Launchers
ADWLauncher
LauncherPro
GO! Launcher
Gingerbread Launcher by Modaco
Gingerbread Launcher by Eugene (This one has the 3D app drawer)
Please only suggest free apps.
Please post app name and a download link if one is available.
NO +1 POSTS!!! I only need the suggestion once.
On a side note, the proposed names for this project and app are Oxygen Air and Oxygen Breathe. If you have any suggestions on a name please let me, preferably by pm and then we can have a vote to see what it'll be called.
ok, i'll kick off.
free versions of ROM Manager & Titanium.
I agree bout mms.apk and adhost but for every launcher i dont think adam will agree. He said before that will be his one and only default launcher and he'll stick to that.
And i dont really like this idea thing, i prefer tje rom to be as loghtweight as possible without any apps. That way, more freedom and people can install any of their favoured apps.

I'm only doing it because of the amount of people that go into the Oxygen thread and moan about zeam. It might stop them moaning.

The rom will not come with any of these suggested apps. It is just 1 app that will work as a repo, like the Market. The difference is that these are apps that fix or improve certain elements or apps that are suggested by the Oxygen community.
My favorite launcher is Zeam, ADW.Launcher, LauncherPro and Go Launcher
Because of Oxygen, I used Zeam but now thinking of changing to Go Launcher since it has so may improvements. Only thing missing is scrollable widgets.

Hi, nice initiative.
I would suggest:
- Since we are upgrading ROMs and sometime full wiping, something to backup/restore SMS, MMS and call logs (like SMS Backup & Restore and Call Logs Backup & Restore) would be really useful.
- less important because it only affects a few Oxygen users: Bluetooth File Transfer. Since pairing with some carkits does not work for AOSP based roms, it is the only way I've found to successfully pair my phone with my carkit.

I thought to suggest this too but wasnt sure if titanium is able to do that (I dont use it.. prefer to reinstall apps).
For sms/call logs, I use sms backup + which is free and best of all, it syncs sms/calls with gmail
I like LifeSaver2 for Call log/Messages backup, it backs up to your SD card and handles large volumes quite well (I exported and imported 3300+ SMS messages without a hitch).
I also like the News & Weather widget, which wasn't in Oxygen 1.0.4.
- fancy widget (free)
- Es file Explorer
i can see this is going to grow into a big list!
@BendingBetty - perhaps you should make this into a poll so we can vote and then you can package up, say the most popular 10 or so....
just an idea...

Right now I'm just wanting to build the repo. So the more the better. I'll stop between 50 and 100. Hoping to then get a suggest an app button in the app to make it easier to manage.
Clock & Weather :
gTabSiMiClock
The modified dialer by Cytown or Wysie. The blacklist number feature is deeply missed.
led light or something like this to use the flash as torch.
the one used on Defros rom is simple and works even when screen timeout. (I do not remember the name of this app)
Advanced Task Killer (free variant)
Everybody needs somethink, to kill your ghosts
Ad in the app is ok, i use it as service anyway

You can use Status menu power bar mod for do this, simple add Toggle LED flashlight.
Settings -> Display -> Widget buttons
If you use 2.0, you should wait, the mod will be avaible soon, becouse AdamG is awesome

Hi guys!
Some days before I flashed oxygen 1.0.4 rom on my desire and i just recognised that i havent got sms menupoint. So i cant write ( i dont know if i can receive sms ) messages. If i try i get this: android.process.acore stopped unexpectedly.
Somebody could help me please?
Thanks!
That's the thing I like about Oxygen.
There's basically nothing included.
Then again; I don't think apps such as "SiMiClock" will be included in a ROM. I see the need for ROM Manager to take an example, but I don't feel that it needs to be included in the ROM itself.

I`m struggling to see the sense here, free apps just put in yourself or are people to lazy. Better to be a minimal rom then each person can customise to suit. FWIW I have over 50% of the apps posted on here.
id there anyway to keep ur home screens organized between wiping and flashing roms? im sooo sick of redoing it.. im going to cry if i have to do it again.. thats 15 whole minutes of my valuable life.
I know ADW lets you do two backups within its settings, one for home screens and the other for your general settings (grid layout, dock, swype actions).
So you restore your user apps with titanium, install ADW, and restore those settings. Certain widgets effectively get broken links, but the layout is still there and you re-add the one to three that have an issue. The sweeping majority work and it is all pretty quick to set up.
Other launchers probably have the same thing. Also, Titanium backup will backup your launcher data itself, but I don't endorse doing that since doing so has confused market in the past.
Another option is to try your luck with not wiping data between updates, and hope features like Market Doctor will save you. I like my way though.
Swyped w/ XDA App. A clean tie attracts the soup of the day.
Soba hit it on the head....ADW will restore it, but if you have fancy widgets; you will have to restore them regardless. If it's a bunch of icons then you will be fine.
Launcherpro will backup and restore as well

i'm using an HTC Glacier 2.3.4 non-rooted
i plan to root my phone but i was wondering what would be the best rom for me?
-i want to be able to use the wii ime app (dosnt work w/ htc sense)
-i want to be able to still use my 4g mobile networks, wifi & hotspot and usb tether
-netflix compatible
- skype,oovoo,ect. compatable
-market ( i rooted before and couldnt log into market so i went back )
-working photo/video camera
- and of course all the things android phones should have (phone, text, contacts, account sync ect.)
what would be the best rom for me to use?
also, is there a way to flash a custom (or official) rom without erasing texts and account data?
Since your first point eliminates Sense, you're basically left with one option: AOSP. There are quite a few ROMs based on AOSP, but the biggest would be CyanogenMod 7 and MIUI. CM7 provides you with the basic Android look, but a lot of customizable options. Everything works extremely well, and it has great battery life. MIUI is a Chinese developed ROM that essentially makes your phone look like an iPhone. I have never tried it myself, but I've heard a lot of good things about it's performance and battery life.
My personal recommendation to you is CM7. I'm more of a function-over-fashion guy, so I do not mind that it's missing all the eye candy and flash of Sense. Right now, I'm running TDJ's version of CM7.2.0, and I cannot think of a single downside to tell you. I can't speculate about the Wii app since I don't have a Wii, but it meets all your other listed criteria. As a general piece of advice, look into anything that TDJ develops. The man is a legend around these parts, and everything he gets involved in, always comes out better than before. The links to my setup are in my signature, in case you want to check it out.
As for maintaining data like texts, use Titanium Backup. I recommend you spring for the Pro version because it is extremely handy, especially if you like to flash a lot of ROMs. When backing up data, going to the "Backup/Restore" tab at the top, press the menu button and select "Batch." From there, select "Backup all user apps + system data." Once that is done and you've flashed the ROM you want, redownload Titanium Backup from the Market, and follow the same steps but instead of backing up, you'll want to restore. So scroll down to the restoration options, and select "Restore missing apps with data." It will restore any apps that you are missing, along with their data (like game progress, settings/preferences, etc.). Do not restore system data, because that could screw up your phone. It might be time consuming, but it's better to manually setup your phone instead.
To restore your text messages, from the "Backup/Restore" tab, scroll down until you find "[SMS/MMS/APN] Dialer Storage." It should be labeled in green. Press it, and select the option to restore data. Once that's done, restart your phone and your texts should be back in the Messages app. It might take a few minutes for the app to sort them out chronologically, but it will. If you synced your phone with Google, your contacts should be automatically restore upon signing in.
I would recommend MIUI if customization is what you're looking for. So many themes!!!! Also for backup I prefer MyBackup Pro/Root (either works) for all my apps, texts, MMS, ect. So TDJ's MIUI for my recommendation!

+1 on CM7.1. It's nowhere near as "ugly" as a lot of users make it out to be. I feel that now there are themes that you can find in the market just by searching CM7 themes that really make the UI very appealing to the eyes. I am running CM7.1 with "stetsonaw's EpicBlue Theme CM7" and it's beautiful. R3Ds Themes are pretty nice too.
I would definitely recommend CM7 to all Glacier owners, from my own personal experiences. But the best way to tell is to flash them all and give them all a test drive.
I've tried some very good Sense ROMs too from MikMik, Darkside, and Virtuous that are significantly better than the stock Sense. TDJ did a very nice job on his MiUI ROM also. I just always end up back at CM7.1

Not really. The iOS look only applies to the included theme. Most MIUI themes look nothing like iOS:
I personally love performance and battery life. The best i found so far is miui 12.23 by tdj i get about 26 hours with game play but gps is only problem on links once in awhile. Then absolution cm7 rom is getting 16 hours with heavy game play and gps is great. Try them and have fun.

I think you need to go through the down grade process before you ate able to simply root your phone. It is in the forums
Core droid htc glacier
My questions is as my title explains.
I just used the shiny new root tool to root my phone, so of course the first thing I did was boot up Titanium Backup and restore all of my apps and some of my settings.
I made sure that I was pretty careful not to override any system apps/settings, or at least so I thought.
Everything is working fine, except that now all of my toggles are completely gone.
Notification drawer: Missing
Quick Settings Panel: Missing
Settings -> Display -> Notification Drawer: Missing
Was just wondering if anyone had any ideas, or if I'm forced to do a reset and restore again :/
Nevermind I fixed it. I used Titanum Backup to wipe my two Settings Storages and that worked.
Just thought I'd post that in case someone else does the same thing.
I generally only do restore of apps, then afterwards certain ones I will restore the data, like games Angry Birds etc. You may have restored some mod app or something that overwrote those items? not sure. But going from one device to another its a bit risky restoring app and data in my expereince.
*ah, glad you got it

Agreed. Never a good idea to try to restore Settings (or really ANYTHING other than user apps) when going cross-ROM, and especially cross-Device. Sometimes you can get away with it if the roms are based on the same origin (i.e. a modified stock rom from stock), but if there's ever any changes to the available settings (nearly always the case), there's a huge risk.
Glad to see you fixed it.
