[Q] Stuck in safe mode - how to run an app? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hi
My middle button is stuck and forces my HD2 into safe mode booting.
The apps that I had added shortcuts for on my screen start OK, but non-google apps do not show up in the app tray. I don't have access to any other apps which may allow me to easily access system areas etc.
Does anyone know a way that I could run an app? Specifically, I would like to run Titanium Backup, as I'm going to buy a Moto Defy today (so water damage does not get me again!)
Thanks
Tim

No ideas?
Mainly want to get my Angry Birds data off onto my new Defy!

Install Droid Explorer on your pc
Plug the phone in and pull the data from angry birds straight from the phone into the computer and then back into your new phone
You can do a search here on xda and find the exact location of the saved game progress in angry birds... I ran into it months ago
best of luck

Ah great - many thanks!
Glad I'm not the only one who is nuts enough that one of my major concerns is getting Angry Birds data off the broken phone!

EVO startup applications

Any way to control which application launch at startup? Judging by the long list of "open" applications in ATK immediately after a reboot, there's a lot of junk there. I know that "open" programs should not affect Android performance due to the way it multitasks, but it certainly can't hurt and will probably speed up boot time.
thx
Most things that get started at boot are either services from apps designed to run all the time (like Locale), or things the system has called to sync data (facebook, twitter, gmail, etc), phone services...trying to tweak it down without knowing what each and every one does is dangerous and has, historically, caused more problems than helped performance.
To my knowledge, the only way to keep something designed from starting up at boot from starting...is to uninstall it.
Here's a list of startup apps that I'm sure don't need to be launching...
Sprint Nav
FM Radio
Sprint Zone
Sprint Football Live
News
Amazon MP3 store
Footprints

Unusual...Sprint Nav doesn't launch on mine until I actually click on the thing and clicking the "back" button repeatedly when in it, closes it gracefully. Does it have the little icon on the top bar that shows it as running?
FM Radio isn't showing as running on mine either.
The sprint stuff is usually safe to remove (as is the amazon MP3 store and foorprints if you don't use it). In fact, they all *look* safe to remove (the only one I'm not fairly confident on is "News").
If you root, you can probably just remove the .apk files associated with the things you don't want. Most all of them look similar to ones on the hero as "safe to remove"...but no guaruantees (we've had some surprises before ).
<insert time break here>
Well I just rebooted and all those DO start up with mine too...but they disappear after a while of non-use (android shuts them down gracefully). Once the custom rom's start coming out, a lot of those probably won't end up included. However, since root access is easy to get right now, you *could* just uninstall the stuff you'll never use anyways (go into adb, back off the .apk files (on the off chance it breaks something and you need to put it back) and then rm them).
I haven't tested ANY of the above except on my Hero so...keep that in mind.
Thanks for looking into that. I didn't realize that some of those close after a while.
I think I'll stick with the old adage "if it ain't broke..." and not try to root or remove these just yet. The phone works great as-is... I'm just kind of a stickler for memory use.
APK does the job of killing these too. And it remembers which programs you kill on the regular, so it's literally a 2-click process.
All in all, it's no biggie so long as the phone stays snappy (and boy is it ever!)

WaveSecure Serious Vulnerability!!

I'm using Modaco latest r8 rom with froyo 2.2. I noticed 2 things:
1. wave secure will not download my account data automatically when I factory reset. I need to register again which make it vulnerable. >> Anyone can disable wave secure
2. I don't even need to factory reset and I can reset wave secure by clearing the data in settings!!!!
I have tried in original HTC ROM 2.09(rooted) and flash in /system/app. same situation.
And I've tried that if wavesecure hasn't been register, you can't lock it from wavesecure.com or sms
I don't know if this is due to the nature of froyo or it's been like this since 2.1
wave secure is practically useless right now on my phone!!
Anyone can confirm this?
called them and they said they disabled the function for temp as they are working on some fix, it will be up again in 3 weeks as what they said
Yep, saw this on MoDaCo. Will not be renewing my WaveSecure subscription.
Lets be honest, it was a waste of money to begin with right.
This whole thing makes me wonder...can an Android phone REALLY be protected by these kind of softwares? Even assuming there are no security issues with the app..I mean,a lot of Android phones are rooted by their owners and all are rootable (?) without booting into the OS, so even if said apps are installed as system apps (just like wavesecure can be) what's preventing a "smart/geek" thief from pulling the battery, changing the simcard,(rooting a non-rooted phone), booting into recovery, mounting system and wreaking havoc through adb, including removing the security app?? Am i going on a wild goose chase or is all this sound??

If you install wavesecure to /system/app and make sure its only there and not in /data/app as well then you should not have this problem.
Also wavesecure have gone through a rough month, got brought by Mcafee who in turn just got brought by Intel. They need to adjust to the new owners. They are (were) only a small company and lets face it their app is the best around by a long long way.
If you have any problems or suggestions on how to improve they usually listen (it was one of TeamVillain and a xda mod who suggested they make a update.zip for /system/app and a number of other improvements and they did it straight away).
Don't just say "oh no its not working" no app can protect your phone from the right people, if someone who knows all about rooting etc gets your phone then your screwed anwyay. But the average joe thug who steals your phone will get it, put in a new sim the alarm will go crazy then they panic, drop the phone and run. You can then use the tracker to find it, or give details to police.
Just put the apk in your rom next time before you flash in system/app and flash the rom. Restore data from a backup (but not the app) and you still get your market link too.

While i agree with you that a witch hunt isn't the proper response and that it is unlikely that the average thief will know his way around adb, i have personally tried to remove wavesecure from /system/app...it works...i did it without breaking a sweat. I intentionally triggered the lock by attempting to uninstall the uninstall-protection, pulled off the battery, booted in recovery and got rid of wavese cure with a single command. Reboot and presto! A free phone . So it is true that there is no full-proof way to be safeguarded, at least using this software, and in my humble opinion the guys over at wavesecure should clearly state so on their website. And they don't always listen..there is a long story of noisy silences concerning op's issue...omissions, censorship etc etc. I got a free lifetime subscription so i'm not particularly yelling at anyone, just making hypothetis, but wouldn't you be quite pissed off if someone stole your phone and rendered it's security software (for which you payed) impotent just because he knew "SU"?

The thing is though, if they knew SU and other commands chances are they will get around any protection whatever it would be.
But Wavesecure offers you a way to track the phone, you can still contact your carrier and get them to IMEI blacklist it, then track the handset down via wavesecure.
hi - just check out secrep5265.blogspot.com - thats interesting information concerning your discussion.

[Apps] for I'm Watch Smartwatch

I started on the wrong foot, but finally found that it likes Android 1.6 Apps!
- Angry Birds!!!!!! (with music and usable, albeit, it just takes a little time to Start just Once Initially, the everything is quite normalish after initial start..... But the initial Splash screen looks so cool on the smartwatch it is worth the wait).
- Dolphin Browser
- Opera Mini Browser
Hints:
- To download anything in Opera Mini, select the DCIM folder, it seems it does not like to download on initial root. Warning, it is not fast downloading.
- When typing remember that it is a good idea that when typing in the small keyboard, that if you are fast, and keep pressing a key and notice it was not the one you intended, before releasing the key, if you do it fast enough, you can move your finger towards the correct key before releasing your finger. This is much faster than having to delete a wrong entered letter. If you keep pressing and fail to move fast, it would suggest alternative based on the wrong letter and you can no longer move to next, but if you click elsewhere, it won't type the wrong letter.
- Dolphin Browser is great because you can define shortcuts for common menus (remember you don't have a menu key), with its gestures. I made a gesture for settings and other to go to downloads and for full screen!
More Apps come!!
Please Share your Apps!!!
More Apps!
- Aptoid works quite fine to install new apps.
- Backgammon Free
- Bazooka Rabbit works! (albeit, not all the screen appears, but it is playable).
- ES File Explorer
- .... more to try ...
Are you running the latest 2.1 os?
I'd be interested to see these apps in action on the watch. Anyone want to make a youtube video?

I just recently got my imwatch and I'm already using the amazing side loader machine to load random apps onto it. I'll try to get a video going of it if I can but otherwise not many apps seem to work on it. If you can give me some ideas and a link to the apk to make things easier I will have more examples to show.
Great little thread. Lets hope more people post the names of more suitable useful apps.

I'd be interested to see how some apps work compared to my Motoactv. So some examples would be emulators such as gbcoid, snesoid and n64oid. Maybe some android games such as Hill Climb, and Hardest Game Ever. Apps, I dunno, maybe root explorer (or just explorer), a browser (I use boat browser mini), and mxplayer playing a video would be cool to see. Everything but the emulators I just got off the Google Play store. If you can't access the store on the I'm Watch yet I remember being able to take apps off my phone. Just download the app on your phone, then use a file manager to browse to /data/app/, then send it to your computer (I use bluetooth). I can send you the emulator apk's, just PM me your e-mail.
Use bluestack make it easier to grab the apk and download multiple apps at the same time,
Games or apps compatible with android 1.6 will have a much better chance of working...
Good info
apps
Got some more apps that seem to work on the i'm watch after the 2.1.2 adb update
go jkeyboard works
mobicalc
advanced task killer
voice search kinda works, cant find netwrok connection. would like someone to get that working.
dropbox works
graffiti pro keyboard works
dolphin browser works
gesture search
but there arent many people who are rooting and or doing things for the watch,. So if you can give me any ideas as to what to do to it or how I'd appreciate it,. Such as unlocking the bootloader
What I'm finding is that anything where you can draw or speak is more useful for this watch.\
rooting with super on click was the best way of doing it honestly .
Ok so I found a useful group of apks that make customization something a greater thing.
email me @ [email protected]
for the link. (don't have enough posts for links)
Thanks!
There is a new ADB version out. The last was 2.1.2 but now there is a 2.2.0 which I am going to update to now and attempt to see if it changes much.
Heres hoping.
how do you install those apps on the watch , i just got me a i'm watch 2 weeks ago and this sounds interesting:good:

Well theres two ways to do it.
1. you can do the whole rooting process by getting the ADB software from imwatch and using super one click to root it then install it through a sideload manager.
2. you can download all the apks in there and go to the im market and get Sideload Manager app from there. Then you'd put the apks in the DCIM folder and go through the Sideload Manager and install it that way.
Note: You should disconnect from the pc when trying to install through sideload manager app for option two.
Hello, could anyone help me check "Endomondo" and/or "Runtastic" apps can work on the I'm Watch pls?
Very BIG thanks !

It's still pretty buggy. But from the things I've seen android phones have apps that are capable of handling and changing the volume and etc on there.
Don't quote me but its just what I've heard. I have an iPhone 5 so I can't really share from experience.

[Q] help needed: stuck on startup screen after doing restore

I'm at wits end and am hoping someone here can help me. I recently bought a Nook Simple Touch (v 1.2.1), and tried to root it using this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2040351.
Things seemed to go OK and I think I rooted it successfully, but I got frustrated because the amazon app store wasn't working and I couldn't figure out how to get google apps up and going. So I figured I'd restore it back to original state, do some more reading, and try to root it again when I had more knowledge. I was able to get it to the screen to do the factory restore (# 3 on this thread: http://nookdevs.com/Nook_Simple_Touch_restore_to_stock), but it is hung up on the start screen (the screen that says "nook by Barnes & Noble" with the dot moving across the five circles). It's been hung for over an hour.
I'm really frustrated - I've rooted phones before, and recently rooted a Nook HD+ with zero issues.
When I rooted it I thought I was making a backup by hitting the backup button before hitting the route, but I don't see any backup image on my SD card.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
---------------------------
UPDATE:
ok, I am a huge fan of the Brontes but have never been so excited to see their faces as I am now! After a lot of frustration and cursing, but lots of persistence, I was able to successfully do the system restore, by doing #2 on this thread ((# 3 on this thread: http://nookdevs.com/Nook_Simple_Touch_restore_to_stock)). It appears that option #3 wasn't really working (I hit the home button twice per the instructions, but then it turned into a cycle of hell).
So now I will proceed more cautiously, first being certain I figure out how to make a backup...
Hiya Droid,
Getting the google maps and market etc working is a bit of a faff quite frankly but it does work!
Heres the instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2086582
Take your time and follow them step by step and you should be good to go.
Google Maps works great on the nook and is possibly the best app for it. The twitter app also works and it looked like the facebook app worked too (but it was huge!) Opera Mobile Classic is a really nice web browser to use with it, The opera mini that come pre-installed is a waste of time imho. Also UC Browser (with the squirrel) is the other web browser I recommend. I probably use it more than Opera Mobile Classic.
BTW if you are in the UK then the amazon appstore doesn't work and you can just uninstall it by doing a long press on the icon.
Hope you get it all working. I think the thing to do is just to take your time and not to get frustrated or worry when things go wrong. If you have a fresh nook then you have no data to lose anyway, and as you have found, there are a lot of ways to get you back to where you started!
Good Luck!
Freya
thank you FreyaBlack, I was able to figure it all out. Maybe my first download of nookmanager was faulty, the second time it worked like a charm. The market was a bit wonky but I think it just needed time to sync! Now I just have to figure out how dropbox works on this thing (I already use it on my desktop for audio files but need to figure out how to get those (audio files) NOT to sync on my NST.

tween girl - what security and protection steps are recommended

Nexus 7 2012, 4.4.4
Bought it for my 10 year old girl. I am not paranoid, but want to keep her and the device safe. Looking for recommendations on app, settings, on how to find the device if lost, and how to keep her and the device safe.
1) losing the device
++ I installed the android stock app Device Manager (think that is the name) and also Lookout. They both provide a siren to help find the phone and a gps locator map. but obviously this must only work if the device is wi-fi connected and has battery?
++ lock the screen with password after 2 minutes.
++ owners contact infor (cell phone numbers) on lock screen
-- anything comments or advice?
2) virus protection
++ installed Lookout.
3) Safe surfing
++ nothing installed
4) parental controls
++ nothing installed
Maybe try this? Looks like it does more than one thing.

Thse are a bit too baby for a 10 year old. Maybe I need to reask my question. Looking mostly for common sense ways to find the tablet when it gets lost and how to help people get it back to you. I am not big on parental controls. But have an open mind.

Try AVG, if I'm not mistaken it can also locate a device, I am sure that it emails you immediately to notify you if the Sim has been changed.
EDIT: there are many apps that will email you a photo of whoever fails to unlock the device, I'm sorry I cannot provide links or names but I have tried a few, they work. You can google this one.

Really if this is an issue, turn off Internet access and let her read ebooks already downloaded. 10yo if you can't trust, make her read where you can monitor. Still no trust, no Internet device, it its simple.

If your daughter goes to school, then there is a huge chance there is some kid at school that can flash her device. A few points to think about.
1) If your installing these apps with out her knowledge, you can't get mad at her if she has someone flash it.
2) If your installing these apps with out her knowledge and she finds out, you've now broken her trust of you. As a previous rebellious teen girl this is a big mistake, something she will not forget anytime soon.
3) My daughter has to read daily as well. What I do is read the same book as her. We make it fun. While I make dinner we discuss the book. If I find she hasn't read it yet today, I suggest she go do that while I make dinner.
We don't use technology as a punishment or reward in our house, it's just part of life. My daughter (an yours probably too) can just go to a friends house and surf/play/whatever with out my knowledge. It's more important that my daughter trust me and know that I trust her.
