I'm unable to play media from my PC on my Atrix using DLNA. I get a message that reads " Sorry, internal error happened. The media file cannot be streaming played." Any ideas?
I'm able to stream and copy mp4s to my device no problem from a NAS. Most likely is a file compatibility issue. I couldn't play mpeg2s, but xvids played fine. Protected content wouldn't play either but that's to be expected.
My Xvids won't play.
I was having problems accessing PlayOn through DLNA.
UPDATE: Using the PlayOn Android apps works.

Sorry, the file i was looking at had Xvid in it. It was actually an avi.

if i copy the file to the phone using dlna itll play

I can't use the DLNA with my Logitech Revue and with my PS3 I can only stream MP4 files. AVI's which play on my device can't be sent over DLNA yet if those files are on my PS3 they can be played.
If you can spare the CPU cycles, transcoding video through TVersity works great. So far I've had best results transcoding to WMV9. I haven't found anything it can't handle yet, and my video archive is a mishmash of containers and codecs.
I can stream an x264 mkv 1080p source to the Atrix as qhd wmv9 and it looks fantastic.
Does require a lot of CPU on the box running TVersity, so not a necessarily great solution for those currently using a nas or other embedded device for a DLNA server.

anyone able to get DLNA to work? I'm trying to stream some moves in .avi from my computer to my atrix by using DLNA, i can hear but no pictures. Does anybody know why?
What video codec is in your avi's? I was able to play most xvid avi's with other DLNA streamers like Fuppes before I switched to transcoding everything through TVersity.

Q: How did you get DLNA to play MKVs over TVersity streaming? Everytime i try to do that it says the media file can not be played. Before I had it Configured for my Xbox 360 so while the video of mkvs wouldn't show up, audio was crystal clear, now it only plays AVIs not MKVs not even audio always gives the media file cannot be played error. Can you post all your setting for tversity? I'd Appreciate that very much!
I have a gigantic media server, over 10TB, mostly video (my music collection, while huge, just doesn't take much space comparatively).
While there are a variety of approaches/solutions to distributing this media around the home via a network, I've found that the easiest means for me is to simply mount server share(s) on playback devices when possible, rather than using solutions like TVersity and ORB.
Windows shares (a.k.a. CIFS) are simple to set up, provide full-resolution / quality playback of the material, and for whatever reasons (there are many), is more broadly compatible as a means of streaming. I've run into too many files that AllShare balks at, yet will play just fine when the file is streamed directly.
So what's the point of this thread?
Two-fold. 1) stimulate discussion on technology and methods used for streaming video on a LAN to get the best results, and 2) share my own solutions.
Here's what I've found:
CifsManager is Da Bomb. It does a great job of adding a system-wide Windows Share mounting and access capability to an Android device. Once a share is mounted on your phone, it looks just like any other mounted filesystem to any app, so files can be access on the shares as if they were local.
x264 encoded video plays very nicely on the stock video player. It's obvious that it has been optimized to take maximum advantage of hardware acceleration. I use the stock player to play HD content from a share over my network, which almost always means something in a mkv or mp4 container.
HOWEVER: The stock player can't play AAC encoded audio. This is a problem for mp4 -- these days, many people encoding for mp4 use AAC, so I find I have to demux, transcode audio (usually to mp3), and then remux. This is a PITA, but I haven't found any other solution... None of the third-party alternatives I've tried (most of them) can play x264 HD content and keep up. None.
To make things worse, for some reason hardware acceleration doesn't seem to have been implement for the Divx/Xvid (h263) default codec, so xvid video (usually SD format in avi containers) plays haltingly, and locks up frequently when streaming over CIFS. Oddly, copying a file over to local storage makes this problem go away with the stock player. My theory is that the network processing load combined with the CPU effort necessary to decode h263 without hardware assist just overwhelms the processor. Regardless, the stock player is not an acceptable solution here.
After trying many different players, the one that works best for "avi" files (almost always xvid encoded) is arcMedia (market, free). Close to flawless playback of this type of media streamed via CIFS. Unfortunately, arcMedia is completely useless for h264 (mkv, mp4 containers).
Streaming the direct source media, rather than going through a streaming server that will transcode, gives you the best possible quality and experience. While the above may sound complicated and involved, it really isn't -- in fact, it's the simplest:
Share your media library files in the usual way using the "Sharing and Security..." context-menu item on your windows media server.
Install CifsManager from the market.
Install arcMedia player from the market.
Mount your media shares on your phone with CifsManager.
Using your favorite File Manager, browse your media shares the same way you would your local SD card filesystem. To play an HD media file encoded with h264, click on it and play it in the stock player the same way you would if it was on your SD card.
For h263 encoded media (divx/xvid, virtually always avi container), run arcMedia and use its built-in file browser to navigate to the media file, then play it.
There are many, many advantages of convenience and ease-of-use in this approach over streaming with servers like TVersity, ORB, etc. On a LAN, where bandwidth isn't an issue, this approach works really well!
By the stock Video Player, did you mean on Android? Or Windows?

If you use GB rom, try diceplayer.
diceplayer can play 720p MKV+DTS with full HW acceleration.
I wish we had a thread like this for over the net streaming. If I'm at home I just use upnplay with rockplayer from my mediatomb box which is set to transcode anything ps3 can't play natively.. Haven't had any problems yet.

I have a dual core tower with 2 250 gig drives but want to add 5 1 tb drives with 8 gig of ram. This OS runs off a 8 gig jump drive with NO issues. I use UPNP to my Xbox and laptops. I haven't tried on my phone yet but I don't see why this wouldn't work.

Check or something called Plex its great, I used orb for years and was never happy with playback...Plex is amazing and the android app is awesome.

see, my whole thing is I don't want to run some extra server software just to have this work. I've got a networked media box (Patriot Box Office) and it plays everything over my network flawlessly from my NFS and SMB shares, and I want to be able to do the same thing from my Epic and Tab (mostly Tab with the bigger screen.) Working on some dev stuff with my Tab so it's not fully setup, but once i've got it back to normal I'm going to test Cifsmanager and see if it's the missing link to the issues I've had with getting mkv's to stream.

Yes, and with ordinary Windows shares.
CifsManager is one of the best pieces of software I've put on my Epic. And I have A LOT of stuff...

Android, Samsung player that comes with the Epic.
For windows, I swear by CorePlayer. I'd buy it all over again full price if they'd add Android to their platforms (with HW acceleration, of course).

I'm going to find it and try it out right after I finish posting this.
I've been using Orb for years, and it has always had its issues. With Android, it became a major PITA because they only transcode to WM9 as of 6 months or so ago -- and WM codec support on Android is scant.
Great thread. Love this type of info. I've been messing with streamin off and on to my epic and this just pretty much sums up what I've been trying to do. Gonna go try that now...

PlayOn is amaaaazing. But it's 70 bucks to get it forever. You can stream out of your network over 3g/wifi to your Android and it look great! Even does subtitles. For my PC or PS3 I love PS3 Media Server. It's pretty much perfect and streams HD over WIFI G even.

Yes, Cifsmanager requires root AND a cifs compatible kernel
I run Windows Home Server .v1 and have tried multiple combinations of players/clients without a whole lot of success.. until recently. Movies are in .mp4 and .mkv format. I use UPnPlay for access and MoboPlayer for streaming playback; the combination works great! I have tested on a rooted Nook, rooted Hauwei Ideos S7, Evo Shift (Not rooted.. Darn 2.3.3!), and my rooted Epic.
As in object Dlna on Tab 2 don't reproduce many files as .mkv...
How i can solve this problem?

About the upnp/dlna browser, how's the mediahouse compared to other browser like upnplay?
Your problem with mkv playback is most likely related to running stock Samsung Rom and software. I used to love the stock dlna player until I realized it does not like mkvs. I recommend dice player. It lists and plays all the files on my media server, including 1080p mkvs. And its great because its just one app instead of 2.

upnplay was giving me weird audio issues on mkv+ac3 and this is the combination that seems to work just fine.
Possibly a stupid question but I have some movies on my computer I might load one of two at a time to watch on my Nex but it seems most won't play, at least the ones I've tried.
What format do I have to convert them to?
I've tried using Google movies and the video player built in. I'd like to have the files work in Movies.

yes i have similar issues.
The google movies app doesn't like or detect any of my mp4 or avi films, and the double twist, mx and daroon players will not play many of my avi files that played perfectly well on my htc phone using the stock movie app.... any suggestions of apps, codecs or file formats etc to use?
MX Video Player hasn't let me down in the past. Some people have also mentioned some other player that starts with a "D", but I can't recall what it is atm
I use the BS player and it plays everything I have thrown at it well.The MX player did not work well at all for me.I have movies and tv shows in several formats loaded on a flash drive and BS plays them all.
I use vplayer via usb otg from a 16gb data traveller it plays all my. avi a treat.

I have had great luck with Mobo Player on my HTC Droid Inc but it seems to lockup on my Nexus 7. So right now it seems MX Player is working the best on the Nex 7

I tried Mobo, MX, VPlayer and a few others, but BSPlayer is the hands down winner for me. I like the interface, and it has played my vids perfectly. MX player was good I thought, but when I played an mkv I had to set audio to software decode - BS Player seems to handle everything in HW.

BSPlayer for me as well. I love MXPlayer too but this one just plays every damn file I throw at it.
I found that BS Player is the *only* player that can play a video I use to test devices normally (AVC-1 (H264 1080p) and DTS 5.1 audio). VLC can play it fine on my Galaxy Note, but it can't do hardware decoding on the 7. Likewise, it crashes at generating a thumbnail for that same video.
I also like using Rockplayer Lite, I've yet to find something it can't play.
I use Mobo player with the new update they came out with for the Nexus 7 video plays fine.
havent gotten my nexus 7 yet but maybe vlc beta might work on it.
Voting for mx player.
What's the harm is running software mode? I have yet to play a video that causes slow down. Plus you can ramp up the volume more in software mode.
For everyone using BSPlayer, is it necessary to install one of the CPU support addons?
Another vote for bs player. Only concern is incapacity to lock screen rotation.

To be honest I don't remember, I don't think it did, but as I was trying a good few players at the time I forget exactly which did and which didn't. I don't have any codec listed in my applications list, but being totally new to Android I don't know if a codec would show up in this list. There is a free trial version, definitely worth a try imho.
Mx player was the only for me that used subtitles correctly and it works for every video file I use for it!
Mostly i'm using dice player or mx player for files on the device. Like the look of vlc but too buggy at the moment to really be usable for me.
Use plex for streaming but considering switching to bubble upnp as library browsing is faster and it sees my existing plex server.

I'm using MX Player Pro, and as far as I know it uses ffmpeg as a base, so once there is a Tegra3 add-on, I expect more files will work with HW decoding.
A lot of my older files avi/mkv/mpg/mov random bit rates and codecs, still plays them, but HW is usually disabled, or plays video but no sound. The SW decoder has played literally every file I've thrown at it, and does it pretty well, although SW fast mode is fugly.
New files using h264 etc, hardware decoding kicks in, and after watching a dozen or so episodes, it appears when it uses hw, its not as much of a drain on my battery.

ffmpeg tegra2 add-on does not affect MX player's HW accelerations. It is used by SW player.
MX can help SW audio track playback.
But Diceplayer accelerated H.264/MPEG-4 video without container/transport limitations.
If you want to play 1080p/QuickTime movie trailers , MX can not take advantage of HW video decoder, but diceplayer can do it.
I've been experimenting with this. I just want to navigate to a shared video folder on my Windows LAN, and play from there. I don't want to install server software on the PC. I have 2 file managers (ES File Manager, and File Manager HD). With File Manager HD, it wants to download the file first...so I think I will be getting rid of that. ES File Manager works, but when I right click and Open AS>Video, my drop down list only includes BSPlayer, ES Video Player, and the Android stock Video Player...no MXPlayer Pro. How do I get it in the list?
Secondly, BS Player has a network browser built in, which works great. It'll even add all the .vob files in a DVD folder. It won't use hardware decoding for the .vob files though, only software. I tried forcing it in the options by adding "vob," (V-O-B-Comma) to the decoder list, but it still plays in software.
Any idea on how to add MXPlayer Pro to the video players list in ES File Manager, and how to play DVD files in hardware?
