Hey guys I noticed people having problems restoring a back-up after testing CM 7
So here it is; switching ROMs with NO data loss
The deal is CM7 has is own kernel and there fore his own recovery.
Back ups made in another kernel ( and this means other CWM ) can not get restored with CM7 kernel.
And of course the other way around.
what you can do to easy test CM 7 and get back
- make nandroid backup with your own CWM, probarbly Doom kernel
- flash and test CM 7
- take the ''boot.img'' from the download of your kernel you had before testing CM7
- place it in your fastboot folder
- connect phone in fastboot
- in fastboot issue the command ''fastboot boot boot.img''
- the phone wil reboot, now dont let it boot but enter recovery
- you are now in the same recovery where you made your back up, so just restore it.
all done
---------- Post added at 05:14 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:12 PM ----------
you can also do this the other way around :
[ UNTESTED ]
- make nandroid backup with CWM in CM7 kernel
- restore stock as stated above
- take the ''boot.img'' from the download CM7
- place it in your fastboot folder
- connect phone in fastboot
- in fastboot issue the command ''fastboot boot boot.img''
- the phone wil reboot, now dont let it boot, but enter recovery
- you are now in the CM7 recovery so you can restore CM7 back up and go back to testing
hi can u tell me exactly wht are the issues restoring backups when using latest CWM 4.0.1.5?
thatt is not the back up used in CM7 and as far as I know you cant take a back up made with CWM 4.0.1.5 and restore it with CWM included in CM7 right ?
or is it already possible at the moment ( been away for a while )

thanks man if doom can ( no we know he can, if he wants to ) that will be great
Hmm, but where's the advantage? I don't get it, sorry
It saves about ~3 minutes of time because your just booting the image and not flashing?
Or do i miss something?

Well just means ya could restore data from your current rom on top of cm7 and have all your current setup wit no setting up
Sent from my LT15i using XDA Premium App
I dont think that that is going to work but it is worth a shot.
The advantage is : when it is done you can switch roms without the need of a PC ( and a bit faster and easier )

I think i read some where that the arc is missing some partition ,which allows u to flash kernels on the phone
So im not sure it will ever be possibe without fastboot
Edit:

yes but if doomlord and CM7 use the same recovery than we wont have to change the boot.img right?
because you can restore your system from CM7 to stock without flashing boot.img
you just boot it and than restore after that the phone will reboot in boot.img that was already on the phone
not the one you booted this one time to get in CWM
As far as I no cm7 kernel will not work on stock rom and doomkernel will not work wit cm7 rom
So even if we get same cwm on both neither will boot others rom and you will still have to use fastboot to change kernels because kernels are not compatible with both
This is how I understand it to be ,im no expert tho
Can someone confirm this

yes u are partly correct...
CM7 kernel should also work on stock THOUGH some functions may/may not work...
my kernel MIGHT NOT work on CM7 as it requires a diff ramdisk... it will boot but some CM7 features/functions might be broken...
Thanx for clarifying
Is it a case that we will never flash kernels without fastboot or is it something that can be solved in later dev
Thanx again
Ps v10 is running v well for me

Has anybody TRY flashing Modaco's "Paul's Rom" after ClockworkMod Recovery ? Do we have a green light to do so, or should we wait for further instructions ?
Thank you all.
I am not sure if this is safe yet since it is a different region. Wait until someone confirms though.

he posted the download in the vibrant forum they have over there.. i'll test it
I'm actually a Modaco add-free member from my nexus one days but I don't see a " U.S Vibrant " section, he does how ever has a GalaxyS, I wonder if we good, I think paul is out for the weekend but I have a feeling we good to go..
Where is there a Vibrant forum? I only see a Galaxy S one on his site.

but i downloaded it and am gonna try it..
i'll look and see if i can figure out where it was
This is a holding topic for discussion of ROM compatability with the Samsung Vibrant / Captivate devices (Galaxy S variants).
I don't see any major reason why ROMs wouldn't be compatible, but I guess we'll find out soon enough. I may look into picking up a Vibrant so I can test future ROM releases on it.
Anyone have anything to add?

Seems kinda like the one from MS_guru.. except a little more stable
i haven't been getting all the random reboots that are on ms_gurus, it still is buggy when you plug it into the computer (goes to the MTP Application.. ugh), wifi is working well (except rom manager still won't let me flash recovery through there because it says the wifi isn't stable enough or something), its pretty fast but i'd rather a stock rom than this
i noticed on that page i linked you guys to that they had a link for a download to a stockrom2.1.zip.. i'm going to test that one out as well
I am at work waiting for the word that its a go cause this stock build is killing me! Keep us posted!

Looks like Ryanolson7 has already gotten past that issue.. should work but I too will wait to hear
Made a backup in the mean while using nandroid and bought the premium version of Rom Manager to support Koush.

If you have Recovery installed "update.zip" you don't have keep going back to rom manager and worry about "wi-fi" issues any more because is already installed in your system, just download quick boot from the market, allow su permision, reboot in recovery click reinstall packages and in 1 second you there...
The stock rom on that site is MS_gurus, not the real tmobile stock

do you guys know if we can flash his nandroid to our phones so we can have stock? if so, rsface, you should upload your nandroid somewhere and link us to it.. if you're willing to.. because the 'stock' roms out there are crap.. not even close to stock.

Ok so wiped everything twice like you said... Chose custom installation (the one where you don't have to reinstall the ROM for changing anything) and I chose devil kernel, stock theme, and the some apps. But I noticed that when I go to settings /about phone every thing there is from the rom I was running before this, like kernel and mod version.. I believe this ROM is based on slim but it has an aokp theme (the one I had before fishing this.) And if I go to system/xxxx everything there is also from the previous ROM I was running. but the ROM is very fast smooth and responsive. I came from simply aokp v6

Correct, this is a mod of SlimICS, hence TiramiSLIM. So...your issue with messaging FC'ing remains? And to clarify...what kernel and mod version show up in your current setup?
Also, what messaging app did you install? Inverted? Stock?

Thanks for porting this. I hope to see your thanks meter continue to go up. I know it more than doubled today!
A couple questions if you don't mind-
On the original post in the I9000 forums, they have some sweet themes. What is the best way to go about getting those? Are they available for the captivate?
I found in that forum that others are trying out different kernels. Have you experimented at all? It seems to me that the one that comes with it doesn't support overclock and BLN through NSTools.
EDIT: The latest version of Devil Kernel works for me so far.

thanks Zzmomo. Use update-me app for themes (instructions are in original thread). kernels can be flashed in aroma installer. Update me app probably has i9000 kernels...I'll check this out.
So yeah...I'll have to release an update to the ROM to fix the update me app for the captivate. I'll probably also release an update.zip so current users don't have to download the whole ROM again.

joshlevinson this is a very nice rom. works like a charm !!! thank you so much for this!
I was messing around a bit and tried putting galaxy s3 ui sound instead of the regular ones. I replaced them using Root explorer and changed all the permissions to the right one and rebooted but it didn't work so I tried putting the default ones back but still didn't work... Any way I can get then back without having to reflash the ROM.. And if I do have to reflash it do I need to wipe or not

OK for replacing the file, I got them from team remics and I took system/media/audio/UI and replaced them with the ones from this rom. Set permissions and rebooted...
Then for the reflash process I wiped cache and dalvik cache , used modify me and selected devil, then replaced galaxy s3 and delete default sound, and selected some apps.. and rebooted but still no sound... so then I reflashed using default installation and then flashed again using modify me and all worked. Liwais,
Good work, man. This latest ROM is definitely better than previous ones. Aside from the typical things that are not working, like camera, for example, the transitions and response is considerably better but obviously not ready for extensive daily use just yet. I will provide more detailed report later on. But just wanted to say "thank you" for your hard work.
Hello
Hello guys... i wanna know how to install this rom. via streakmod recovery ? or what ? pls tell me step by step procedure to make a flashing on this DS 5.
Yes, using StreakMod recovery.
1) Do a Nandroid backup.
2) Clear Dalvik, Cache and Factory Reset from StreakMod.
3) Factory reset from main recovery menu. This step isn't always necessary, but doesn't hurt.
4) Flash this zip. Also flash gapps and superuser.zip from the other ICS thread for Google Apps and root.
5) Reboot and enjoy ICS MIUI!

I got a DS 5 from my bro yesterday and i want to flash ROMs on it.
But i still don't know after i've finished ROMs on Ds 5 , is it easy to downgrade or move back to the official ROMs?
Firstly i got this one in 2.2 and now i got updated to 2.3.3 from other xda thread. So Pls answer me whether i should try flashing these ROMs or not ? Any help appreciated..!
I am on Hyperion final and tried to flash aosp 2.3.7 , y-escape , cm7 by biel.tv , kitkat experience v1.1 and they doesn't boot, stuck on bootanimation, and sometimes it pass it and vibrates for long time, in kitkat experience it booted fine then the screen turned green with strong vibrations, in aosp it doesn't even pass the boot logo
I performed a full wipe and formatted partitions many times, mounting every thing, redownloaded roms, So I think it is a baseband problem, anyone please tell me the cm7 comptiable baseband.
Note : I am on DXLL1.

Use DDLK2 as baseband and then flash the roms. When you have flashed your desired rom, flash the CSC of your region.

What kernel do you use? This problem of bootloop mostly occurs on stock kernel. Try to change kernel and try to flash again. There are so many kernels you can choose from. Don't ask me the link. Search it yourself.
You can use Percy's Cyanogenmod kernels for flashing the ROM based on CM.
Here's the link to the kernel thread: Click here to view
If it doesn't solve your problem, feel free to PM me.
Press thanks if I have helped you.

theres your problem right there - you are not on an ext4 system partition which is required to boot cm7
flash percys kernel in cwm with system mounted
now for the important part
REBOOT TO RECOVERY!
you must reboot to recovery after flash the kernel - do not just flash the rom without rebooting to recovery
once you have rebooted to recovery you may have mount errors - ignore them
format system
format data
format cache
mount system
mount data
mount cache
install from zip and select cm7
format data again
optional steps
mount system
flash gapps
restart
I do everything you said but I dont do format data after flash, ok, I will try this and tell you in some time, Thanks

remove your sim card - if it boots then you know its baseband

there is no 'best' baseband - just those that will work and those that wont
theres no point using ddmd1 if you are from europe for example - much better using a firmware starting xx and not dd in that case - not everyone is from india

DD is indian firmware which is why I said india
DX is Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam
They may inlude other countries which can also use these firmwares fine - it is region based not specific countries
its best to flash a firmware from your region which is why I said people from europe shoud flash a firmware starting with XX
If it works for you great
Hi I am new to android. I decided to install CyanogenMod on my Indian sgy rooted and had stock rom with Touchwiz and android 2.3.6. So I got some instructions from here . Then I downloaded the file of around 120MB.I booted into recovery mode. I selected update from SD card and then selected CWM.zip I got from XDA thread. It entered the CWM and then I selected Format system, Clear cache and clear Dalvik cache. Then I selected the update from SD card and then selected the CM zip file of 120MB I had in my phone. It installed and then it showed no errors. After conformation I rebooted the phone. It showed Samsung Galaxy Y and then turned black with no Samsung logo. I thought it was doing something and then after 3 minutes I touched the screen it began to draw circles wherever I touched. I thought I bricked the phone. After two minutes I turned it off and then again got into recovery mode and then to CWM mode and got my phone back with Nandroid backup I had.
Was the phone installing and I interrupted it by touching it?
Is there any error on my installation steps?
Kindly reply me how to install this CM and tell me if you get the same and give me the link you used for installing CM
Apologies for poor english if you find any.
you installed cm9
to use cm9 you need to install whitexp kernel else you will have the track pad which you experienced
you should also know cm9 is not stable in this device - no network wifi data etc - all it does is boot

Thank you. Could you please guide me through any other ROM or thread that could
help me to install another rom. I am not asking for a best ROM. I am just asking a more
appropriate ROM that I could use as galaxy y is not officially supported by Cyanogenmod.
Also the developer of mod said to install kernel if I restore nandroid backup using CWM will I get stock kernel back.
please don't mistake me that I am asking the best rom.

no you will not get stock kernel back by restoring nandroid backup
to go back to stock rom/kernel you need to flash stock rom firmware via odin
This is because the kernels that support cm will format your system to ext - stock kernel does not support ext so your phone will not boot so you need to flash stock rom via odin to go back to stock
all roms including stock based cm7 and aosp are found in the dev section - read the op - full instructions are given there - if you flash a cm7 or aosp rom you will need to flash percys kernel first and reboot to recovery and format system data cache to remove mount errors
choose one that works best for you
