So i was checking out the Sprint GSII today in the sprint store and it had a screen lock password on it so i figured some punk put a password on there. I proceeded to go into the stock recovery to do a data wipe and get rid of the screen lock too check out the phone. I navigated too the wipe function, confirmed it then... IT ASKED ME TO ENTER IN THE PASSWORD WHILE IN RECOVERY! The a keyboard came up and everything IN RECOVERY
This must mean you can run apks while in recovery? Can someone confirm the same thing on other GS2 versions by creating a screen lock password and trying to wipe cache or data on the stock recovery?
Maybe other devices can do this too, but ive NEVER noticed it. Does this make GUI's for recoveries possible with touch enabled to eliminate volume button abuse? If someone can figure out how sammy is doing it, that is. Because as far as i know, running an apk in recovery just flat out isn't possible.
^ Teamwin stole my idea, which I am perfectly okay with
If you have an screen lock password set then you need to enter it when using the recovery option.

Yes, but this is the first time a phone has ever done that too me. How is a ime.apk running while in recovery?

In so many words, yep.
My S2 does it so did my galaxy s. Samsung have designed it that way.

Why hasn't a dev ever picked up the idea for a recovery GUI if you can run have touch enabled in recovery?

I think it's good if your phone has a password and it was stolen, then the thief can't just wipe the phone, but if you ever forget that shyt, stresssss

You have a custom recovery, I'm assuming so it wouldn't have a lock.
Even if the thief couldn't wipe it from recovery, Odin would anyways. So I think its sorta pointless.

Even flashing a wipe firmware with repartition will not get rid of the password prompt.

Use the pin unlock screen and set a unlock pin. After try to flash a new firmware or wipe the device from recovery.

Dude you're using a custom recovery. It only works with the stock one.
Would be nice if the PIN is only needed power on, then it would be a nice security feature. But having to enter it everytime I use the phone is kinda annoying.
Of course, i use pattern lock if anything. Less annoying.
But the main point im trying to make, is that if a keyboard can run, why cant there be touch enabled GUIs for recovery?

Don't do that.
The dev can set it thru the google account ...same way if you forget the password or pattern to unlock your phone...you just put your google email and password and is unlock...that's a good suggestions ...

Unlock the bootloader and anything like that would be worthless.
If someone knows how to flash a rom then chances are they can re-flash a different, non password protected recovery. Sounds redundant unfortunately.

What they are trying to say is that it doesn't matter what kind of password protection or whatever else you put on your device. All someone who has gotten a hold of your phone has to do is unlock the bootloader, and they can flash whatever they want...
My daughter's friend locked her out of her Eris today by setting an unlock pattern and she doesn't remember her Google password.
I figured I would just load a custom rom, wipe, and reinstall but I can't install a custom recovery or even have a recovery menu to flash the stock rom.
Without being able to get into the phone, are we pretty much SOL?

Root the phone and flash a rom. But getting the needed files on ur phone you'll have to access the SD card some other way. Or install one of the old 2.1 leaked roms.

Just reset her Google password from a computer. As far as the pattern goes, just keep drawing patterns until the phone unlocks.

I installed an app called Simply Lockscreen https://market.android.com/details?id=org.firezenk.simplylock When I locked my phone, the app crashed and keeps crashing when ever the app opens, unfortunatly, I accedentally clicked on make default.
All I get is either the plain glass lock screen and if I unlock, just a black screen with the bar at the top of the screen.
I went into recovery mode so that I could install F1 Galaxy S2 V6 ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1129404 but what I clicked on Wipe Data/Factory Settings, it keeps asking me for a password, which I do not know. If I click on Apply update from SD card, I get an error saying out of space.
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks,
Dave

I had tried that, however, it kept asking for a password whenever I booted the phone.
After some more hunting on the internet (about an hour and half) I read that if you keep putting in the wrong password, it goes away and bypasses it.
The phone is now working properly, Thanks for your help.

okay the first phone was my fault. after doing the root process with moto chopper and loki found on android root site I forgot to read the steps required for the wicked ROM. I jump straight to the ROM install but after finishing the install it ask to reboot. Then it vibrates like it is trying to boot up but I never get any video. I tried the reboot recovery button commands but that no longer worked and neither did the hard reset button commands.
luckily walmart exchange that phone for another so then I go home I root the phone and follow the install option for wicked ROM. then the second phone reboots and I get the same vibrating pulses but hard reset works now except it hangs up on the downloading screen. this morning I return the second phone for the third phone but now I'm too scared to try the ROM again because they are not going to let me get another phone.

So you not only committed fraud by pretending you hadn't broken the phone and voided the warranty yourself, but you also straight-up lied about how long you had had the phone?
On top of that, I'd be willing to bet the phones weren't hard-bricked and were actually recoverable.
That's pretty despicable.

This should be stickied with a big banner telling users they need to READ BEFORE FLASHING! or Else this could be you.
Hi,
Got an Exynos S7E (GT935F) earlier. Wanted to update my BL after rooting and installing TWRP in order to flash a new ROM.
After that flash, my phone keeps on asking for a password (don't have, I used pattern + fingerprint) and I can't use Odin anymore. It detects, but doesn't connect.
What should I do?
