Just flashed Syndicate Loaded ROM the other day and didn't know about calibrating the battery, is it too late to calibrate now or will I need to reflash the ROM?

You can calibrate the battery at any time

ive yet to calibrate my battery.. at all
How do you calibrate the battery?
charge all the way
unplug, replug phone, let it top off again
wipe battery stats
discharge all the way
charge all the way
I very rarely recalibrate my batteries. I got a deal on a couple spare batteries and chargers so I just swap batteries as needed, which is usually only once a day.

Sorry if this is a dumb question (I don't own an Epic 4G, I'm asking for two members of my family who do), but how do you wipe battery stats? Do you have to be rooted to do that?
I've seen 25 hours without calibration.
Both Epics in my family are only getting a few hours out of their batteries, even with no use, and they used to get very good battery life, which leads me to believe that it's a calibration thing, but they're not rooted and I can't find any way to wipe the battery stats on their phones.
Can anyone help me?

I wish they would build such a calibration function into the OS, so it could be done without rooting. Meanwhile, the only way I know of for a non-rooted user to wipe the old battery stats is to do a factory reset. But that means backing up and restoring apps and data.
Maybe an app on both stock Epics is running the battery down. Check Running services in settings>applications to see if there is something running on both. Sometimes it is an app trying to sync like Facebook, Oovoo or email. Set syncs for a hour or more. These are original stock batteries right?
Do you BONSAI?
"please read any comments as some are useful"
Before you start doing this make sure you have time on your hands.
Follow it step by step...
Read the entire set of steps and comments first.
Do not deviate.
If you are having issue's with it not charging fully. "70% to 90% and no further." then begin at step 7
If you have Xrecovery installed wipe battery stats first to reset the battery cache to the defaults.
This post will not talk about apps or any odd mods.
It's here to clear up on how to properly optimize the battery in your phone.
The battery has a cache file used to set the top and bottom battery level.
Today i am gona teach you how to set it correctly using nothing more than your phone and charger.
While doing this it will also properly "cycle" the cells.
This leads to the final part of my guide.
Damaged batteries.
If your life on the battery when using only airplane mode.
Is very bad.
Then you should be careful.
1. Check for any swelling or deformation on the battery.
2. Battery gets very warm while charging on standby in airplane mode.
If found Discontinue guide and replace with new battery.
And calibrate again from step 1.
-Enjoy
1. Charge your phone fully to 100%
2. Plug out your charger & switch off your phone.
3. Remove the battery and plug in the charger.
4. Re-insert your battery
This is sets the top end battery parameter to a higher state allowing for further charging.
Should read 88% now.
5. Keep a eye on your phone as it charges!!!
Remove the back plate and feel if it's getting hot "it should not be a issue"
6. Repeat steps 1 to 5
Repeat this no more than 2 to 5 times till the battery will not charge further
A few extra may be required...
The battery may get stuck at 70% to 99% "most of the time 88%"
The cells have now reached full potential
IF in the case that it keeps charging after the 4th time your battery is fully optimized Enjoy, Continue with step 7
7. Let your phone run down it's battery
Don't use the phone aggressively
Leave it till it switches itself off
Now it has marked the very lowest point of the cell in the cache
8. Don't leave the battery empty, begin charging as soon as possible.
If your phone does not switch on right away.. relax.
Just leave it on charge for about a hour "will switch itself on"
9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 a few times.
You will notice each time that the battery may charge just slightly bellow 100%
Getting closer to 100% each time
10.Soon it will read 100%
It has now marked the top charged point for the cells
If step 7&8 does not bring the battery to 100% use the battery calibration app from the market.
Don't rush.. take it calm and easy.
Enjoy your properly set, fully optimized battery.
If you are planning on flashing a new rom you can copy "data/system/batterystats.bin"
And copy it back once you are done flashing.
This way you don't lose the optimization.
The battery does have over current protection it should be just fine.
Still be careful.
This knowledge is based on direct experience building electronic projects for over 23years that require rechargeable cells and the nightmares i had with a bad x10 chipset..
REMEMBER THAT I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOUR PHONE BLOWS UP ETC.
:- final edit 2011/9/12 -:- 3:09PM
Added extra on damaged cells.
Found a few more mistakes and required details... edited.
Added a line for Xrecovery users. <<< removed this.. it's crap.
Thank you xcxa23 for showing me where the battery stats file is.
LET me MAKE this 100% CLEAR... wiping stats = nothing
This guide cycle's your battery, by correctly setting the upper and lower parameters of the cell.

So it was necessary to create a whole new thread instead of lets say, PM'ing me so that I can add the missing information? Either way, this really works to improve the battery life, and the more people know about this, the better. Going to thank you anyway.

Performed as said in the OP along with a full discharge and recharge and I'm getting a lot more use out of my phone now. Use it a lot for listening to music so the battery drained quickly but not any more.

Nope.. it does not matter.
This is not a hack or a trick.
It's simple li-ion battery science.
If it still has problems then your battery is already optimized and your problem is completely different.
This 7% in heavy usage or light usage or standby?

it's because u wiped battery stats on the low battery charge and didn't make a battery calibration. I had the same problem until the calibrating using another method (for me is easier, but this topic shows another way, which can probable be very effective )
Thx OP, although it was stated in another thread like noticed
Someone on XDA also done an Android app, Battery Calibration, easying the process of battery calibration/wiping.
I don't use it for calibration, just to get battery health in mV (even if you can grab it from Android System Info, Android Assistant, etc).
Still using the good ol' method of xrecovery
I installed Batery Callibration in my Galaxy Note .. Love this app...... Increase so much my life battery
One question: How often I Calibrate My Battery??
1. After flash or update ROM.
2. When replace or pull out & put in battery for whatever reasons.
3. I do calibration about once a week.
I always drain battery till it is 1% before plug in charger after hit the calibration button.
Battery time is acceptable to me...15+ hrs with normal use (stock ICS rooted).
Thank you very much for the tips. I Have Rocket Room V07 and Speedmod kernel 3.3. With 3g and Wifi turn on all day, my battery last 24 hs.....Very good for me
which battery calibration app?

Never. That app does NOTHING. You have fallen victim to the placebo effect.
Wiping battery stats does NOTHING on any Android device other than change the behavior of Settings->Battery. It does nothing with regards to fuel gauge calibration.
The fuel gauge chipset in our device does not require calibration and calibration techniques cannot be applied to it. (With one exception - resetting it after a reboot on low battery can have a temporary positive effect - but you can just wait a few hours for it to converge.)

As stated above - they are 100% useless and worthless on our device and any other Samsung Galaxy S1/S2 family device.
To enthropy512, thank you very much for your hardwork for us here in xda. How about a tread that says, after a battery full, you take out the battery for 3 mins then put it back again.

Battery Calibration, try following the procedure stated therein and verify by yourself if it works.
At least you have nothing to lose but very poor battery performance.
You guys should have ever heard of an alternative battery product named MUGEN that selling original and extra sized batteries world wide including range of Galaxy batteries. They also supply a battery calibration app on Play Store regardless phone models but it's for rooted phone only. If this app does nothing they wouldn't bother wasting their time developing it.
Another thing is to investigate what apps or services prevent your phone from going into deep sleep, also try freezing apps or services you aren't using.
Those are my tricks for having battery performance improved.

Hi can i have the link for the calibration app ???
Search battery calibration on google play...its free
Your phone had to be root to use battery calibration
i dont trust any battery callibration app or battery power saving app
i only used cpu spy and betterbatterystats
my point is check ur device, does it goes to deepsleep everytime screen turned off. if it doesnt check using bbs what apps making ur device turned on/wake ur device. im very satisfied with this method. 1x full charge for 24 hr for my daily use and only 24 % battery drained for 24 hr if u didnt use ur device at all(standby)

I recently did a battery calibration on my HTC Leo with MIUI 2.7.27 and now it does last much shorter than before i did the calibration. Does anybody know why this is happening? Before i did it i could use it a full day without charging, but now i have to charge it twice every day. And that does not work too well since i still go to school. Besides, i just want to be able to use it a full day without charging. I calibrated it with the built-in MIUI battery calibration app.So it happened like this:
1. Fully charge it.
2. Click the ''Calibrate Battery'' button.
3. Fully drain it (I drained it until it indicated 7% because i use MAGLDR and we all know MAGLDR can't charge if the phone is turned off. If i would have drained it fully i wouldn't have been able to charge it again and it would be useless.)
4. Fully charge it.
And no improvement, it only got much worse. Someone, please help?
Calibration
These are threads on calibration just in case... http://forum.xda-developers.com/tags.php?tag=calibration
Nonetheless, i had the same problem too, what i did was i drained it to 2percent, power off, on, mgldr reset bat stats, and charged without break, and when the green light shows add another hour (i've read it somewhere in the threads).. As of now from 8AM to 6PM, moderate use still have 50percent using Team Blue Droid SENSE 3.5+ HTC ONE X TWEAKS TMO ROM. [AUGUST 4 2012] [CMR] " STOCK" Team Blue Droid SENSE 3.5+ HTC ONE X TWEAKS EU TMO
Hope this helps...

Thank you, but i am afraid that if i drain it to 2% that it won't be able to power up and boot again. If it is below 10% it drains battery extremely fast, and that would be a waste of a battery. (I've got another one lying around so it woulnd't be much of a problem though) Please advise me, should i do the same as you? By the way, i already noticed that if the green light shows it is not fully charged, but thanks for confirming i was right
Anyways, thank you for your help. I might give it a try when i am more sure about if it will power up with only 2% left.
P.S. Sorry for my english, it is not my native language
Battery drain is a common problem and a lot and I mean a lot has been written about it, just like roms where you have to make a trial and error method which suits you best, you also have to take into consideration battery quality sans its true capacity. In my case, I simply follow the dev's advise on battery tips. Since you have an extra battery, choose your best performing battery, and drain it to at least 5 percent and reset battery stats in cwm. Reboot it and charge without break, no sim , so that not to disturb it until the green notification kicks in, patiently add another hour just for keeps. Use it and sometimes it seems that there is no change but again patience is the key , Let it work out more until the charge settles and hopefully you get a better battery output and with correctly reported stats.
Finally, a rom that would not be too much demanding on power, one for daily use, devs post them if it is for daily use. Practically, only the apps you really need, a little eye candy, and simple games. Ciao!

Hello, Just wondering if is good to calibrate battery or wipe stats. I've switched roms a few times and want to maximize the life of my battery. Also, I read that it's bad to let battery drop below 15%, is this fact?

I don't know if it's a fact but yes, it is widely believed that constantly letting it fall to like 10% or less is bad for the overall life of the battery.

Wiping battery stats / calibrating does nothing beyond a placebo effect. I know that lots of people will run down their battery all the way, but it's actually hard on li-ion batteries to do that. I had a lengthy, informative article on this at one point, but now I can't find the link.

For me, using the root calibration apps has not been placebo. I have actually seen and measured benefits after calibrating. I know about that article from some Google engineer saying it doesn't help but it really has worked for me. I used the calibration app by nema in the Play store.

It was proven by a Google guy that calibrate just deletes battery stats. Which is what happens when you charge up to 100% I believe.
