[Q] Overheating Motorola Defy - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
So I've installed BatteryLife to monitor the percentage of battery remaining as well as the temperature of my Defy, and I've noticed that as I run some apps, it sometimes reach as much as 40°C. What I'm worried about is that it might fry my processor, if I assume things correctly. Will it be that way? How do I solve this?

not use it?
40C is fine.

the temperature that you talk about is that of the battery. 40C is fine if you play some games or similar cpu intensive apps.

Yes 40C is fine!

Yesterday I have 48 C, and the phone was acting normally, so 40 isn't a issue. Also, the phone has cool down mode that activates when it reach critical temp.

mine is normally 37degrees. but make sure your rom doesn't have some overclocking settings and vsel is not set too high.

Once my phone did reached 50°C and I open up the battery cover for better ventilation. I did this because I was on 3g continuesly online while listening music. Phone run no problem for another 2 hours non stop..

[Q] HELP~~ battery temperature too high

anyone can help me with my problem? thanks for paying attention to my thread 1st
i'm experiencing overheat of my battery which is around 45 degree Celsius on normal use
the lowest i can get is around 42, which is very high, doesnt matter i took it out for couple hours and put it back, temperature still the same, around 10 degree higher than normal
is it possible that the thermometer thing inside the battery has gone hay wired? if so how can i recalibrate it?

This happens on daily use? Also in standby?
or only when/after you are installing android rom?
You always had this issue or only using DesireHD rom?

No one can help if you do not provide info. Windows ROM, radio, Android ROM, kernel, are you overclocking? What are you doing when the temp reaches the highest? Is it in the 40's all the time?
P.S. Questions should go in the Q&A section.
You should also make sure that you are using original battery.
Some aftermarket batteries have wrong temp reading...
clock speed you're at and governor used?
i always underclock to 768mhz or 576mhz jus to keep my batt temp under 40 degrees celcius..
note that if you charge and use heavily at the same time, the temp rises higher than normal, so avoid this..

if you get same temp also in WMO, this means your battery is dying.
Buy another one.
if you using s7.6 HD kernel, use the smartass setcpu profile.

he said that his battery is hot also in Windows Mobile.
How SMARTASS will help him to get a cold battery in Windows Mobile?
Please read befor posting
His battery is going to dead shortly.
just elementary electrical knlowedge. When a Li-Ion/Li-Po battery start going dead, his internal resistance will raise up. You may now that havin some current passing thru an higher resistance will cause more heat. Think about a lightbulb. If it is 20W it's hot.. but a 200W it's hotter.
So, when your battery is hot without using it, means that internal resistance is raising up, so means that the battery is almost dead. It's time to change.

a brand new battery could die also after 24 hours because defective.
The thing that you was not able to charge it.. confim my toughts. Your battery is damaged/defected. Trash it and buy another one.

Critical battery temperature

Hey. Does someone you know, what is the highest (read: critical) battery and HW temperature in this phone? I am a little bit scared when I'm getting even 55*C on battery when I am using it as a navigation connected to charger in a car. I know it's too high because when it's heating over 49*C it stops charging. My question is how dangerous is such high temperature for HW and Battery? Is it normal behavior?
I never had such high temperatures, and I live on a hot country (Brazil). Try to check apps running in background, or, if you are using 3G and charger, it can get really hot. But I think it's normal, since my phone reaches 45ºC while charging, and I don't use 3G.
with 3g my phone gets crazy hot. i once left it on overnight (it didnt go to sleep) and when i woke up it felt dangerously hot, musta been 50deg or something
otherwise, with wifi it just gets warm... still worrying though, considering none of my other portable devices have ever gotten this hot before... just shows where all of the battery life goes to! :S
i dont think its the battery getting hot though, it must be the cell chip. my batt temps are usually pretty low, and the batt itself doesnt seem to get hot. its just the panel above the battery that warms up
My phone got so high temperature (55*C) when I was using navigation. Moreover it was pluged to the car charger (but wasn't charging because of high temperature) and mounted to the window in hot sunny day. And I'd like to know how dangerous is such high temp. for the device.
I wonder if we have dud phones? my battery life sucks ass... bare able on wifi, but **** with 3g
Agree with scott. With prolonged use my battery doesnt heat up, just the panel above the battery (where the camera is)
And my battery life sucks too. Gotta keep it charged in the car for even short (30 min) trips with navigation
Sent from my MotoA953 using XDA App
Try checking the manual (if there is) for operating temperatures etc.
I'm not exactly sure of how it'll affect the phone but it poses health problems due to higher radiations.
Try preventing this by ensuring all other (running) apps that you don't need are closed by using a task killer and all connectivity stuffs (eg. bluetooth, data sync) ESPECIALLY THE BACKGROUND DATA if you don't need it. Also, if possible try to refrain from covering the back panel (mainly the area near the camera) and allow ventilation to let it cool so it won't overheat.
What else I do is leaving the keyboard opened so there's even more surface area for it to cool.
The problem isn't just about damage, but that you don't want to be holding hot metal.
Yes it sucks but its a price to pay for such high specs packed in such a tiny casing.
My friend who owns Samsung Galaxy II has his phone heating up even more frequently and quickly, so we're not the only ones
Its annoying because we know its avoidable and shouldnt have been allowed in the final design by motorola
I've never seen such high temperatures with my M 2.
Highest was 47ºC while charging and playing a game. It usually sits around 35-36ºC idle, and 40-42º during games.

That's normal guys... Every device dying in a "few minutes" with 3G. And U know what? From my last 3 devices which I have been using to surf in the Internet with 3G (Moto RIZR Z8, Nokia N86, Moto Milestone 2), MM2 lasts the longest.

That's right, but every app just showing the battery temperature
Damn..
Yesterday my milestone 2 became hotter as ever, just above the battery (where the camera is, like newbietown). First I turned it off, but it stayed hot even then. After I removed the battery it became cool again.
But! Now my MS2 is completely dead...
It's really not turning on again, and charging is really weird (irregular flashin led). And my warranty is void because of me installing argen2stone I guess ..
Well, just flash a stock rom and they'll never know...
My phone is not recognized on my computer using USB . Can I still use rsd lite?
First get to bootloader mode: Power + Volume Up (or down) + Camera
If battery is too low you'll need to buy a relacement or a external charger.
Sent from my Milestone 2 XDA App
Try taking it to warranty. Argen2Stone is so lightly modded, maybe they won't mind it. Anyway, you have nothing to lose now. And this really looks like a HW problem, not SW
Sent from my A953
Beginning of next week I will hand it in for warranty. I think it has something to do with the power circuit in the phone. Sometime i've used HTC chargers (1A) instead of the motorola charger (0,85A).. That could be the cause Hopefully they cannot see that.
I don't think that's a problem. I always use a Nokia charger, I find the original charger too short, the Nokia has a good lenght. And I never had problems with overheating. Also, 1A is the maximum current that the charger can provide, not the nominal [email protected] anytime

Atrix tends to run hot quickly

I'm running CM 7.2.0 with faux's 1GHz 0.2.4 kernel underclocked to 912 MHz (though I've had this with all CM roms and kernels) and after more than a minute of screen time my Atrix's CPU tends to exceed 50 degrees Celsius while the battery gets to around 40 degrees Celsius (this is recorded using setCPU). This happens most with apps like BaconReader or Facebook but has happened with others too.
I refuse to play games on my phone because it seems to nearly overheat while I'm playing any game.
When the phone starts to get hot, the battery drains faster (like 1% every 2-3 minutes).
Is there something I can do to fix this, or is this a common problem that I shouldn't mind?
Has anyone else experienced similar temperature issues?
Indeed my friend, its the Tegra 2 chipset, in fact, most of nVidia hardware tend to overheat, including Tegra 3 and PC/Laptops Video Hardware.

Nothing wrong with our phones except moto's traditional neglect.
OP, try going back to stock. I find I've got heat issues with custom kernels too..

Probably you have some rogue apps running in the background. You could try the GSAM battery monitor. It shows which app using the most battery and waking your phone.
It is getting hot because it is under a load. Not the phones fault. It is something you added. I had a "bad" app that looped and kept trying to write to cache. I couldn't figure it out till I used logcat. This phone still kicks ass, even if it does have Tegra II.
Also, BetterBatteryStats is free to xda users.

i know exactly what you're talking about, i jumped around all them roms based off of CM7 and CM9, tried different kernels, I did like Clemsyn's 1.0GHz enhanced kernel. In the end, try the rom in my sig, its based off CM7.2 stable, i **** you not my friend, first time ever I have enjoyed more than 24 hours of phone use on a single battery charge, phone never gets anywhere remotely close to being as hot as it used to, something about this build, i dont know but my battery lasts now and phone doesn't cook in my pocket after a phone call, check out log i have of how much battery life I got from 1 full charge
try flashing Jug's battery fix through CWM, it slows down the drain of the battery to a noticeable level where you can see it really does work and helps keep the battery from being pissed away after 2 phone calls
This is happening to me as well and only with this Rom have I had this issue. I guess I'll try changing roms and see if that fixes things.
i am using epsilon project v5 and problem solved

does your S4 get hot below the camera?

Hey guys,
i noticed my phone was getting a little hot while i had the navagtion app going.
im using the S4 flip cover and right under the back camera, where it says Samsung - I felt the phone getting hot.
Anyone experience this?
Me too
It's always hot.
I mean it gets hot often.
Of course it gets hot because the CPU is right there.

Using while charging is fine unless it is overheating.
The reason it's recommended not to use the phone while charging is because it reaches high temperatures much faster and so is more likely to overheat causing hardware problems
I personally don't game while charging since this phone (especially i9505) gets really hot really fast

i think i must think to buy an extended battery to play more than 2 hours hehehe are they already on stores?
Almost every good phone gets hot now and then. My rooted S4 barely gets hot. I mean i flashed a great rom (omega rom) and flashed an amazing kernel (perseus) and played a bit with cpu voltages and i undervolted my cpu and it barely gets hot , and when it does , it does not get very hot .

I thought I was going crazy, but YES, the phone gets unusualy hot just below the camera.
I noticed this right after performing the Apps2SD update, and since then have been freaking out!
I am afraid that constant heating and cooling of this kind can damage the sensitive parts inside,
so I have been limiting my use of the phone in the last few days.
People, this is not normal. Somebody needs to contact Samsung.
There must be a software patch for this...?!
Oh yesss!! Let's make another thread about overheating -___- It's already known that this happens, so you better get used to it.

[Q] Note 4 heating, hardware or software?

Hello everyone, I recently purchased a new note 4 St N910C. Just after a day of usage I felt that it is getting hot when I play games on it. I closed all the background apps even resetted it but still no luck. My phone is getting heated up near the camera area. My question is that is this a hardware issue or a software one, because if it is a hardware issue I should try and get it replaced, if a software one I should better wait for a lollipop update.
Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated
Thanks

Galaxy Note 4 heating [camera]
I purchased Galaxy Note 4 [SM-N910G] a week back. It's on Android 4.4.4 (KitKat)
I am having a different problem for which I could not find any satisfying solution on the Internet. Whenever I open camera app, the phone starts heating up near camera & battery also drains very quickly [around 2% under 5 min.]
I know that the phone will heat up a little bit when playing high graphics games, but I don't think it should heat up too much when using camera app.
I have already factory reset [both soft & hard reset] the phone, but still it does not help. I contacted Samsung support, & they told me to 'Reset app preferences' from Application manger, but still the device heats up when using camera app.
I also cleared data of the camera app, but still the issue remains
The phone does not heat up at all on standby mode, but opening camera app raises it's temperature more than it should. Previously a Note 2 user, this problem was not there.
Anyone else experiencing the same issue on Note 4 ? Any ideas on this ?
The phone heats up only if you're recording 4k or 2k video. If you use camera generally & your device heats up.You must get your device checked

You can factory reset all day, it won't help. Thats not a problem, the camera just uses a lot of processor power and thus generates heat. You can't change that, you have to live with it

Sorry, but do you have any idea about CPU temperatures? 60 isn't bad. 40 isn't bad. 30 isn't bad. Even 70° and occasionally 79° would be acceptable. Don't put your phone into the freezer, ity not good to freeze the hardware.. Especially if you literally have no problem. The CPU is prone to temperature fluctuations and your values are fully normal in the world of CPUs. There is no best value, everything up to 70° is the normal temperature variation. Your phone doesn't have a problem, its perfectly fine.
Mine actually heats up while charging and using at same time. Clean master shows 70-75°C cpu temperature while using browser and stuff but 80+ while gaming, that's not normal right? I'm worried cuz I always used my old phones while charging and they never got this hot, I feel like it will melt someday :/ In what temperatures exynos operates?
I got my SM-N910F yesterday and installed LP 5.0.1 via OTA. Temperatures are 40+ when the phone isnt doing anything. While I did the Antutu Benchmark, it was around 50-52 degrees (Celsius). Feels much warmer than my previous Note 3 (which of course never had LP). And since i am not used to this temparature on my Note 3, i kinda worry about the temps right now. I read a lot that many have that problem since LP update. So whats normal and what would be too high for regular usage (not using Camera or playing Games) ? Is there an average i can go by and compare ?
And whats my alternatives now if I want lower temps , go back to 4.4.4 Stock Rom (currently have LP 5.0.1 Stock) or do I try a 5.x Custom ROM . Did the Custom ROMS fixed these heating problems or is that just something I have to live with ?
Thanks for any help.

Thanks for any help.

Just do a Factory Reset (hard reset)
First backup everything & Google for detail instructions on hard reset.

Sure that makes all the difference ? I read a lot of posts from people saying that a factory reset didnt really solve their problems. Do you know for sure it will help ?
