No one seems to show GEN2 any love. Its all GEN1 and CUS7. For those that want GEN2 (I live in US), well here you are. A full image for Acer_A500_7.006.01_COM_GEN2. This is not edited in any way. (This means not rooted). This is probably not going to be useful to the average person. For a modified (but rooted) ROM of this, look here
This is not OTA and can be used without ClockWorkMod (CWM) or any modifications of any kind.
Unzip Acer_A500_7.006.01_COM_GEN2.zip and place update.zip on the root of your SD card.
I should also mention this is Honeycomb 3.2 for those that don't keep track of the build numbers (and who can blame you?), and this DOES have a locked bootloader. But, nevertheless, and valid source for flashing and other things!

thank you so very much for this. Where did you get it? as soon as i get it downloaded Im going to add it to dropbox and post the link here if that is ok with you.
Here is a dropbox link to the file: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/26368270/Android/tablet/Acer_A500_7.006.01_COM_GEN2.zip

Hi. I have a question....is it rooted? I would hate to update it and lose root. Thanks. Excuse the question, Im fairly new to the Acer scene (1 week).

This is not rooted, it is also bootloader locked. I do not recommend this for you. Try another rom that is 3.2, there are plenty now!
Ty, been waiting for a GEN2 to add to my collection.
Thanks for the heads up. Im running Honeyvillain 1.2 but Im curious about the GEN2, as Im in the US as well. I dont know what the differences are, but so far its working smooth, smoother than any other ROM out there.

Yea I wouldn't worry 2 much about GEN2. If you have a choice, get GEN2. Otherwise it doesnt matter. The differences are mostly system files related to keyboards and databases and such from what I have dissected.
Like spelling color as colour and other oddities.
That and different bloatware, not all the same as the US

Vache has a downgrade image to Acer_A501_1.309.02_COM_GEN1 that will work with the new locked bootloader. Root that image then install CWM THEN install a custom rom. That will prevent the boot verification issue!

That problem can be solved by adding the line "ro.carrier=wifi-only" in the buildprop (you can do this with es file explorer or root explorer) and reboot.

I live in the us and while I have rooted my a500 I haven't installed a custom rom yet because the few stock roms are gen1. I want to stay as close to stock as possible and would love to have this 7.006.01_com_gen2 with just root and and bootloader fixed. I thought your "clean" rom might work for me but I'd prefer to have just the stock rom with few modifications. Any idea where I might find something like that?

Thanks. I installed this over stock slightly modified 3.1 I did wipe /format partitions. Then restored my ti backup.complete secess
My friend is goofy and doesn't remember anything about how he rooted his Nook Color except he used autonooter. He asked me to take a look because he wants to upgrade it to get flash on it and give it to his fiance. I feel it would be easier to go back to stock and start over but if anyone else has any suggestions I would be open to them. All he wants is it to support flash.

i'd probably first update to 1.4.2 (the link to the B&N file and what to do is in the thread that was provided earlier) - then manualnooter it using gmpower's helpful thread (put clockwork recovery on an sdcard with the files).
edit to add 1.4.2 link: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/Software-Updates-NOOK-Color/379003190/
My friend sent me the stuff he had for the nook and everything he sent me is listed, next. clockworkmod, nookcolor_v1.1.0_r2, win32diskimager-RELEASE-0.1-r15-win32, win32diskimager-RELEASE-0.1-r15-win32, 128mb_rootpack-0.7, auto-nooter-3.0.0, and 1gb_clockwork-0.7, and I have no clue what he actually used here or what everything is.

Yes... one issue is that if he had CWM installed on EMMC it will not update correctly... you will need to use the stock 1.4.1 cwm flashable I provided in another thread and let the nook update.
I am adding snapshots of the 2 storage spots that pop up when I hook the nook to the computer, maybe it can help you guys determine what my moronic friend actually did.
pal jonny,
While I am proud of your generosity toward your friend by helping him but, seriously, if you don't know what to do, why take up that task? If you know then you can help, sure but based on question your asked up there, I feel you don't.
Getting confusing and performing what you not comfortable with could make your friend's NC a mess.
Your friend, seems like he did it b4, why not let him do this time since he collected all info anyway.

Because I do know what to do, I have rooted 3 phones but the Nook Color is new to me and I don't know what his dumb ass did and neither does he, lol. I am working in a different way than most people have, receiving something already rooted and not knowing what was done to get it to that point. I recently had to un-root my phone and it was easier because I was the person who rooted it to begin with.
I am also asking as many questions to get as much information to make sure I do not brick the device.

My suggestion would be take it back to stock... then install what ROM he desires... quite simple.
If so,
a. if you/he wants custom ROM, get CM7.2 RC1 (KANG is a great version). Just format /data, /system, /cache and Dalvik then install ROM
b. if you/he wants stock ROM, 1.4.2 is the latest. MN 5.0.2.19 should be a good tool to root.

Is there something wrong with the regular cyanogenmod stable 7.1?
If I go stock build does it include flash, he wants to give it to his girlfriend to play movies as well. I am trying to convince him to go with cyanogen mod but he wants the functionality of the nook software, I told him there is a Nook app but he hasn't gotten back to me.

Nothing wrong with CM7.1. It's your choice.
If he wants stock ROM then install stock for him, flash should be well supported.
Note: Nook apps is NOT equivalent of stock feature.
Why use nooks Os when cyanogen has stable 7.02 and a promising ICS? I say give the new phirenook. NOOBS seem to like the modifications. Then install the B&N app and she's good.
Just an idea. I haven't tried the stock for some time.
I am back trying to work on this nook color again and i can say without a doubt all he did was autonooter. So if I update to the newest version of the oem o.s. will it wipe out the autonooter because this will be easier for me if it does.
If there is any recovery on it other than B&N's stock recovery... the update will fail... look for my 1.4.1 cwm flashable stock file.

What version did you flash? If it was 3.0.1 it's ridiculously buggy. Ideally you want 3.1 so you can root it with sc2k's GingerBreak modification then flash CWM then a custom 3.2.1 ROM, Thor's ICS ROM or one of the Leak-based ICS ROMs

Not sure why you installed ICS. That just compounds the issue.
You can take a look at this thread, and try NVFlash. This guy had a similar issue.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1579490
Considering you were able to install ICS, I would like to ask if you did this from CWM recovery? My guess, is there is a ton of corrupted data in the partitions. This would explain things a little. If you can get it back to HC, then you can run a dmesgview and get your UID number. Then you should be able to run TimmyDeans tool in the General thread (I believe).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307539
My guess, is that your EC Pwr control got messed up along with corrupted data. I would advise staying away from the ICS Beta leaks, and just get a good HC up and running.

I just made an entire guide.
Please dear God help me out with this, I am so lost! So I bought an Acer A500 tab, and I want to root it. But before that! I want to save the current firmware and the CWM due to me having a two year warranty on the device, and I'm a afraid if I were to return the device with issues clearly it'll void the warranty since I've rooted the device. So please can anybody help me out? I am in huge need of help!
Thanks in advance!
To help you I need first some information about your tab. First, what android version is installed on your tab? The best backup will be with CWM but then you need root.
Of course you could connect your tab to the PC via USB and copy everything to your HDD. But I think here you need root as well to be able to see the system folders... .

A paradox.
You can't save your current rom in it's native form unless you root. And you can't save it, unless you install a custom recovery. And even then, you're saving a modified OS that if you restore, will be modified. So a paradox.
So if you want to root, and install roms, you'll just have to suck it up like everybody else
Fortunately, lots of methods to revert back to stock in case needed.
So, you either take the plunge, or stay stock.
Not only that but most Big Box stores dont have a clue and rarely look at it anyway ,unless you tell them its something you did (which would void the warranty) . But for me personally I void warranty within a few hours on everything I get , if its electronic they always take it back , I wouldnt worry about it , run a bunch of stress tests for a couple days if the components are sound ,it will complete them no problem , then root away and have fun!
Thank you all!
Thank you all for your replies! I can honestly say, I can happily root my device without a worry now. But I have a couple of things I'd like to ask, for one. What is a cpu ID? Also say for example I rooted my device and want to revert back to the original OS is that possible or not? Here is my current information.
Android Version
3.0.1
Kernel Version
2.6.36.3-00001-gf991e5d
Build number
Acer_A500_1.016.05_COM_GEN1
That's my current information. IF anybody of you guys call tell me I would like to root my device but with ICS not with Honeycomb since at the moment that's what I currently have. Also I have 2 year warranty.
Cheers! And much appreciation!
First, this is an excellent post about CPUIDs, why you need them, and how to get them posted by dibb_nz ... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25429111#post25429111 this will really give some direction on why it's important and how you can get it.
If you want to root an ICS rom I recommend reading this post from Civato on how to upgrade your bootloader to v6: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622425 I recommend the Automated Flashing tools for ease, but the manual version is good if you want to know more about what you're doing on the tablet.
Then pick a ROM, I personally use Flexreaper Extreme, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22964651&postcount=1 but there are several out there to choose from, I recommend putting several on your MicroSD card before you start any portion of the process and that way you have several to choose from, test between them, and don't "over customize" until you make your decision.
Finally, I'll remind to you, as many others will do, BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!
Good Luck, and most importantly, have fun!

You freaking rock bro! I have a question, since I already have Honeycomb on my Android by default, would I need to root first before I update it to the newer version of the ICS? OR would I just have to manually update it first and then begin the process of rooting the device? I as well admire Flexreaper Extreme. I also noticed there are special mods for the device to change the skin etc...Would you know where I can get the tutorial on that? I know I'm jumping too much, but I'm too darn excited to do this. Hahaha.

You should be able to start the process by going through the steps in Civato's post on how to change your Bootloader, make sure you have a ROM on the MicroSD before doing this, and then follow the steps to install the ROM you choose.

Sounds like it didn't install cleanly. Double check the checksum, try redownload, wipe everything and reinstall. If that doesn't work make sure that your bootloader and Rom match.

Hi! Thanks for your reply I have successfully rooted my device after hours of research I had to reinstall everything from scratch, unfortunately my build for my tab isn't the same as the the build I had it when I bought it, oh well...So now I have HC 3.0.1
So now I want to flash the device, is that possible? I want to get that ICS look without updating it to the ICS. I was wondering what would you advice me to do? haha, I know I'm asking way too many questions in this single form, I have an excuse for that I'm a noob, hahaha. But seriously your help is very much appreciated!
I will suggest rooting your HC ROM first, then install recovery for example via acer recovery installer. Make a backup then!
After that you can use AFTEROTA to upgrade the bootliader and recovery. When finished install an ICS ROM of your choice. With the help from AFTEROTA you can all ways go back to stock HC version.

hi everyone, i'm a501 user and decided to use Alexandra V ROM..
My question, do I need to root my a501 before install the ICS bootloader ? Now i'm using official HC 3.2.1 and never experienced in rooting.
If rooting is necessary, how to root official A501 HC 3.2.1? Maybe gingerbreak 1.2 ?
thanks before

Well, rooting is generally the first step. HOWEVER.... you will need to;
a. Flash the ICS patched bootloader
b. Flash a CWM or Public Recovery
c. Have the Alex V.zip already on your external SD Card, that way, it is ready to install after doing the above 2 steps.
Now the current Alex V you can run a simple root after install, so rooting now, is rather not necessary. Also, you might want to wait 3 or 4 days. We just got a new ICS update today, that if works well, I will change out the Rom version. Probably Sunday if all goes well. Will save you the time of re-installing the rom again.
The only reason you would want to root right now, would be to install a CWM and make a backup of your current system., In case you ever wanted to go back to HC. But note; HC roms do not run on ICS bootloaders and vice-versa. Also, The CWM's will be different for ICS. So it's sort of like once you commit to ICS, you go all the way, and never back to HC (you can, but who would want to).
Oh yeah, don't use Gingerbreak. It will probably bork things up. As of 3.2, rooting became a little difficult.
So in the meantime, while you wait, you can read this thread as it contains instructions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622425
Note that the above procedures (manual or automatic) usually work about 90% of the time. Seeing you are currently on stock 3.2.1, I don't foresee an issue. Any questions, post them in the instructions thread.

You shouldn't. The bootloader program uses NVFlash, which is initialized before the OS starts. The only requirement I believe is USB Debugging must be turned on in the system settings, but that's really more of a precaution than anything. I've not used these programs, as I did it a long time ago the old fashioned way. AKA semi-bricked my tab.....:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh: Heck, I didn't even "have" an OS, and got the bootloader and CWM installed
Read the stuff. Understand what you're getting into.
And.... Get your current UID number and write it down somewhere safe. This is really your only protection if something goes bad. Usually it doesn't but you will also need it during the process.
When you get ready to do this (after I hopefully have a newer version in a few days), you can post in my thread for help. Got some good guys there with 501's that can lend some advice.

Sory MD, I haven't got permission to post in your thread due to lack posting.. I have installed v8-thor. 1.7. 3_recovery.A500apx, now I still able to boot into my HC ROM. but now I couldn't find any cwm mod recovery.A500apx to install in my tab. How then?
Thank you very much
