Help MTP application (Kies connection) Broken

Guys,
After a failure to get my phone to connect to odin-3 when it was in download mode, I took out the battery (since I did not know how to get it "out" of download mode) just to get it to boot up again.
No harm, as odin did not start to copy the firmware to the phone (since it could not communicate with it), the phone was working and all my apps were there, however, when I plugged my phone into my laptop the PC Kies application would start but my phone to attempt to load "MTP Appliation", however it would just flip back to the touchwiz screen and back to MTP Application then back to touchwiz again (non-stop).
Not sure why this is happening, or what I broke ?
I have since (using Odin) flashed my phone with the latest (European) firmware but the problem is still there, MTP mode just restarting all the time and kies never connecting (I also tried reinstalled the Desktop Kies app).
Anyone know how I can get this working again?

On a related note, i also installed doubletwist (before the steps above) and had to turn on usb debug mode.
I have since turned it off when not syncing with dkubletwist but noticed sometimes the music player saying mass storage device mode is on?
I wonder if some "state/lock" file is left behind somewhere on the phone?
Could the use of doubletwist be related to my problem?

As per my post in the other thread, this method seemed to sort the problem when I had a similar issue. Not sure if you're using a different launcher, but that is what caused the problem for me. Changing to TW didn't help even after killing the other launcher (ADW or Pro). However, once set to default (TW), I could reboot the phone and it would connect fine (without flicking on and off). There's no real need to Keis though if all your contacts are with Google as USB storage mode is more convenient.
I had this problem too. It was caused because only in idle mode of the Samsung home launcher can keis connect. You may have installed a different launcher. Try the following:
Put usb to keis mode in settings
download home switcher from the market
run home switcher an set touchwiz as default home
Reboot phone (task killing other launchers don't work for me.)
make you phone is in the home screen - press home to get there
now connect the cable with keis running on pc
sync everything you need to
In future I suggest you move all contact to Google so they sync over the air and you'll no longer need keis. crappy software!​

I got launcher switcher and it listed my launcher as unknown. I just switched it to touchwiz and set that as default.
Once i get home i will restart the phone and test connecting with kies.

So your recommendation did not work for me.
What did work is actually unmounting the internal sd card and formatting it.
Unfortunately My camera is crashing when i open it.
Funny thing is that my phone sseems so fast now (no lag).

Same problem here and I never used Odin. Must be something different ... any ideas are welcome.
BTW: which latest firmware did you install?

Has anyone of you for whom formating the internal SD card solves the problem installed SoundHound? I spent the last hours with formating the SD card and then copying back my data piece by piece and by this I found out that the "soundhound" folder is the thing which leads to the problem. I have all my data back on the internal SD card except for the "soundhound" folder and the connection works! If I now copy this folder back the problem of the restarting "MTP Application" returns. If I now delete the folder again it is working again! So at least for me SoundHound or furthermore it's folder on the internal SD clearly is the problem! Also if I copy the folder to the external SD card instead of the internal one, the MTP connection does not work and if I delete it again it works!
Can anyone confirm/reproduce this?
//edit: After looking to the content of the folder I would assume that the problem is that the MTP Application has a problem with specific file extensions since the folder only includes files with no or extreme long file extensions.

Thanks! same here, soundhound is the problem.

I must say that Soundhound itself is not the problem. The long file extensions of the saved files are the problem. They're more apps which use such files like e.g. the skyfire browser. Just delete them and it will work again.

Thanks a TON. I mounted my card in the data storage mode, opened the internal card in my computer and did a search for *.*, switched to detail view, sorted by file type. There were several files with long extensions in the folder "TunnyBrowser" which is created by DolphinBrowser HD. I uninstalled it, deleted the folder and now it connects fine again!

SoundHound + Kies issue fixed

I am a developer at SoundHound and am responsible for our Android app. Sorry to hear about the problem you've been having with our app and the Samsung Kies software.
Just wanted to let you know that we've updated our app to be compatible with the Samsung Kies MTP sync software. As has been mentioned in this post, the problem is caused by files on the SD card with long or missing file extensions.
So please upgrade to the latest version of SoundHound on the Android Market. If you uninstalled SoundHound because of this issue, I hope you'll give us another shot!
Naturally, we can't do anything about other apps that generate these offending filenames.
If you continue to have any problems, please feel free to respond to this post or PM me.

[Q] unable to install apps?

Hi,
First post so please be gentle. I've got a Lg GT540 running 1.6 and wanted to install a couple of apps onto the phone internal memory, so I got the apk files onto my desktop and connected the phone up via usb and could not and have not been able to copy these files onto the internal memory. In fact the phone does not come up as a drive or anything and copying the files onto the sd card leaves them stuck there and not being installed.( Mainly the astro file manger app.)
I then considered upgrading the phone to 2.1 via the LG site and downloaded LG suite etc and all was going well until the process stopped at 4% upgrade and requested I disconnect from pc, remove battery etc etc. I tried to follow that procedure 3 times and it still failed.
Not beaten I then found some stuff online to enable me to reflash to 2.2 (Modaco) and started that process. One of the first things it required me to do was start the phone in Fastboot mode by holding the camera button down whilst powering up. THe phone stubbornly refused to go into Fast boot.
Sooo, How do I get to copy Astro onto the internal memory so I can do what I want to and/or how can I upgrade to 2.2/

Firstly when you try to get into fastboot it wont work until you install a fastboot kdz.
This will allow you to flash roms onto ur phone.

There's also a video on how to install android 2.3 swiftdroid. Its on the same channel in the favorites.
But beware u will lose all you apps unfortunately. Unless you get astro file manager or titanium back up which requires your phone to be rooted.

Hi Chris, Thank you for the link to the demo and I will need to look at that with a view to implementing. No doubt I'll be asking for some assistance during the process.
However I'm still at a loss with not being able to install apps directly onto the phone memory and would appreciate some pointers on that. I have acess to a desktop running XP and a laptop running Windows 7.

You probly cant install apps due to lack of internal memory. Bye install the Kdz it will enable over 230mb of internal , along with apps to sd, so no need for use of internal.

I really want to know why my pc connection only reads my sd card and not the internal memory. Is there an approved way of connection ie whether I need to use any LG software etc.

Hmm that's odd. When you connect to comp it should only show SD card, have u tried a factory reset?

Hi again,
have made some progress and managed to update the os to 2.1 off the LG site.
When usb plugged into pc it does read the sd card and I am able to copy files inc apps to it but do not know how to run them!!! My belief is that I need to install apps to the phone memory???

Ohhh i think i see your problem now.
So uve downloaded apps from this website or other?
And you want to know how to install them?
Get astro file manager or any other ones the same,connect your phone, put the Downloaded file into a folder , like downloads in your SD card then disconnect your phone , open astro the go into SD card and downloads folder and press on the app, it will ask you to install and Bam your done.
Or if its saying that ur not able to install it, go settings>applications>development>usb debugging tick it and also allow installation or 3rd party apps tick that to.

Hi Chris, I think you are close to understanding my problem, I have a apk file of astro pro on my pc but am not sure where to copy it to. I have tried copying it onto my sd card but am then not able to run it?
Do I need to have the phone rooted etc?

The first thing to do would be to downlaod Astro Free from the market and then navigate to the sd (home on astro) and select the apk, open app manager and install, install. Now it will be installed.
Tap here and then tap download directly from market to download from market.

Yeah i understand. Follow these instructions. Astro is free on the market anyway. The pro version is no different.

A very big thank you to Chris and Quinney I actually had the Astro apk on my laptop and sent it across via Bluetooth and I'm now up and running, Only had bluetooth working since the update to 2.1
Wouldn't mind getting it to run a little faster though, I see people reporting 800mhz being smooth.

Book Button works bad after rooting

I noticed that the book button doesn't bring me to the right page of the currently reading book, but it bring me to the first page of the book, like a new instance of the Reader.
If i go back to the book using the library, it will bring me again to the right age
(sw: NST 1.1 rooted with TouchNooter, GApps and Market working)
It doesn't happen with every book, but it happens for example with this one: python-tutorial-2.7.1.epub
Does it happens to you too? (could you try with this book eventually)
Any idea about the reason? and/or about the solution?

I think, i had the same problem once.
Are the books stored on an external sd?
If so, save them to your computer, format the sd card using your nook and put the books back onto your sd card.

Hello, I too have this problem with Reading Now Button, but my nook was rooted using minimalTouch beta5 by eded333 and my books are on NOOK internal partition.
What is strange that when this happen (reading now button linking to first page) the Library is linking to proper page of book I'm currently reading when I press it's cover.. but when I switch to Home screen then on Reading Now is info "on page 1 of 1" (wrong) and cover go to first page
As if Home and Library has separate databases of what I'm currently reading on Nook..
Can somebody help with this problem?

I had this problem too... The nook is very sensitive about being connected to a computer via USB. If you do not safely remove device before unplugging it your book database becomes corrupt.
1st Connect nook to computer and delete all the book off your nook.
(back them up on the computer before deleting them if they are not already backed up)
2nd Safely disconnect the nook and unplug from the computer.
3rd power cycle for good measure even though I'm sure its not needed.
4th Connect the nook to the computer.
5th Reload all your books back on to it.
6th Safely disconnect the nook from the computer before unplugging it...
Now everything should work again. Your home page will actually show what page your on and the now reading button should work correctly
This is the first and only USB device that I've seen that will actually break if you don't use the safely remove device feature in windows..

That helped for side-loaded books on SD-card and on internal memory but I have one book for free from B&N (Dracula by Bram Stoker) and this one is resistant to all my action.
I even tried to delete it by Root Explorer and downloaded again but it still shows "on page 1 of 1".. well I can live with it but its irks me
I wonder is there any trick to trigger Home (and Library) database rebuild? Other than delete all books and reload them again? (maybe delete some system files?)
I will try to remember to safely disconnect the nook from now on.

I personally have given up on connecting with the usb cable... I'm sick of having to resort all of my shelves after deleting and adding back the books.
i now use dropbox to get the books to my nook now... I'm looking into sugarsync because it allows you to pick the folder its sync... so we might be able to drop the books directly into the correct directory with out having to use a file manager to move them... the only issue i see is that you have to restart the nook for it to see those titles..
You might be able to trigger the Home/Library to rebuild the database if you figure out where the database file is saved and maybe delete it? I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT EFFECT THIS COULD HAVE ON YOUR NOOK. This could brick it for all i know so try at YOUR OWN RISK.

You are right, it's dangerous - deleting home.db on working nook did nothing for "reading now" problem but it somehow triggered mini restore of system files on next reboot and manged to un-root my device (su and busybox gone).
Fortunately I had WiFi ADB enabled and could root it again with eded3333's guide.
PS. I'm very happy that I have copy of my factory nook - it looks like I will be needing it sooner than later

Some files on Nexus 7 sdcard not visible in Windows Explorer

Hi, all.
If I use ES File Explorer to back up an app, the .apk is written to the /sdcard/backups/apps folder. If I plug the N7 into my Windows 7 64-bit laptop and browse to that folder, the .apk file is not listed. Other files in that folder (also .apks) are listed. I recently unlocked and rooted it using mskip's Toolkit. I can't recall having this problem prior to rooting. Prior to rooting, I definitely backed up a few apps and copied them to my laptop. They were instantly visible in Windows Explorer. I also have no problems copying files from Windows to the N7, and those are immediately viewable in ES File Explorer.
After a ton of searching and reading, I tried two sdcard rescan apps, but neither work to make the files visible. According to ES File Explorer, the .apks on the N7 are readable, writable and not hidden. Oddly, after backing up more apps today, then going out, leaving the N7 connected to my laptop, they were suddenly visible in Windows Explorer when I got back. This makes me wonder if the rescan process takes a long time to run. From reading about those rescan apps, it seems it shouldn't. Maybe these rescan apps don't work on all folders on the sdcard? Hard to tell.
Is it possible that the drivers installed by the Toolkit could cause this? I have tried disabling "Developer options" (of which only "USB debugging" was active) - no dice; rebooting using the Rebooter app - no change. The difference I see between the fully stock, out-of-the-box N7 and the unlocked and rooted N7 is that the latter now shows up in Windows as a removable device (MTP Device). Normally MTP devices don't show up as things that can be ejected (Kindle Fire HD is that way). That would seem to be driver-related.
One last test I tried was plugging it into my wife's laptop (no Toolkit installed) to see what I can, or cannot, see. I'd never attached the Nexus 7 to her laptop. Two of three drivers installed successfully (the one called "Nexus" did not install, but "Nexus 7" did). The Auto-Play dialog popped up, and I opened Windows Explorer from there. Still only the same six files listed under /sdcard/backups/apps.
Clearly others are experiencing this problem, but I've yet to read a explanation. I thought I had solved it when new backups showed up, but after that five new ones are not visible, while the ones that eventually appeared were still listed (11 total files, of which six appear in Windows Explorer).

I'm having the same issue. This is nonsense. We shouldn't have to jump through hoops just to view files we recently put on out devices. If ANYONE out there knows of a fix, please chime in...

im having the same issue. issues that were not there on 4.1, i have a feeling its jelly bean 4.2 related but not sure. i see some files but not all. i know theyre there because i can see them on the nexus7 itself but some files are not visible on windows.

Are the "some files" that are not visible via MTP newly created? For instance you used a root-priv file browser to copy the .apks to someplace in /sdcard, and then went looking for them immediately afterwards from the PC?
"Newly" meaning... since the last time the N7 was rebooted?
It's unfortunate and horrid but I'd be willing to bet the files will show up just as soon as the N7 is rebooted. Disconnecting (safely) from the PC and reconnecting doesn't seem to do the trick, but rebooting the N7 will. Ugh.

You need to reboot and wait for those files to be scanned, they will appear eventually. Or use AirDroid.

downloaded filed from utorrent app are not visible in Windows Explorer
Hello,
I am useing Sony Xperia SL recently installed the Jelly bean update that rolled out, its not rooted. The issue is, the files that is download from utorrent app are not visible when i connect my phone to PC, however when i browse to the same location on my phone using ASTRO file mananger the files downloaded are visible and works fine.
Usually any video file that is copied or downloaded will automatically appear on the Movie gallery, even this is not happening.
please help me out guys.

help get my rooted nstg functional

for the past week I've been doing all that I can (but I'm by no means an expert) to get my favorite ol' NSTG rooted. I intend to use it as just a reader with gmail and google voice installed so I can text from it. however, I'm running into more problems than I bargained for. been slowly working on it for a week, tackling one problem after another, but now it seems I'm at my wits end with my inexpert troubleshooting skills. I'm hoping I can glean some of xdas superior hacking abilities. I'm following the root guide as per http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1675706.
so far, I have rooted my Nook. Since there is no native file explorer, I cant side load apps from my sdcard. I've installed es file explorer from google.com/play from my tablet onto my nook and that worked fine for about a minute. I tried installing apps, but I was encountering an error message where it says my sdcard is full (which it wasn't). OK, so i need to adb install nookmanagers packageinstaller.apk (page 13 of forum). well, computer sees my nook as a USB storage device, but adb devices refuses to acknowledge my Nook (I've enabled USB debugging). the Nook Imple Tocu driver wasn't installed, although all of the other usb devices associated with my nook installed fine. I factory restore and tried reinstalling the driver to see if it would work. rerooted, but this time added some apps to the glownooter-1-12-25 under data/apps but only 1 app was installed (einknorefresh out of market search, es file explorer, and Renee NST reader). still stuck without a file explorer, I tried reinstalling es file explorer but google play won't let me, thinking I've already on my device. back to adb, the same issue of adb devices not recognizing my device.
so now, I have a rooted NSTG with gmail working, but the native web browser fails after clicking on a google search result, and I have no file explorer (without an idea how to get a file explorer onto it). idk how to access the apks on my sdcard, and if I did, how I could get the package installer.apk working properly, as adb doesn't see my devices.
if all else fails, I'll just try another root method >_<. but honestly, I'm not looking to use this intensely. just to read PDFs that the native reader doesn't do well, with gmail and google voice (maybe even placing calls with a microphones headphones through the microusb port if that possible, as I saw a thread suggesting that), multi touch and USB otg. but hey, one thing at a time here
