system apps and other system files also require space in the phone's internal memory you know...

He's referring to total system RAM, not internal storage. I don't know exactly why, but every ROM I've ever run has said total RAM is 620 even though the phone actually has 768. Someone will have a simple explanation, I'm sure.

It is this way with all devices. The OS sets aside a Ser amount of ram for the OS to use. There is always a diff between total ram, and total available ram that the user has access to. Been that way for ever

Available Ram

I downloaded The app ELIXIR to use for system information read outs and its stating that my mytouch4g on has 628MB of ram... arent these phones suppose to have 768MB of ram?
am i missing something here?
Some of the ram is reserved for the gpu, radio, etc. There's 640 or so leftover for apps.

Ohhh ok gotcha, I just wasnt sure cause this is my 2nd my touch and from the system app my first my touch had a ton more available memory left over from everything the system ran (though I never ran elixir in the other phone) and this one has significantly less left over ram even at boot from a restart
does your mytouch say the same thing?

If you want to see how much space for apps, etc, go to settings, sd& phone storage, look at internal storage. You should have around 1.1GB after a reset.

I've never tried this elixer app but if I do "free" from the command line it says I have 642080k of total memory. This is about 628MB so I'd say we are showing the same thing.

Regaining device memory

Hey guys, I just deleted a whole bunch of photos and videos (all saved to my desktop PC first) and my available storage space went from 4.8 GB to 8.48 GB, so only 2 GB short of the 11.50 GB total space which is great.
About the device memory, it says available space 1.61 GB. How much device memory does the phone come with and if I want to regain memory, how do I do that?

Lol, who cares, honestly? Noone answered and it went to page 2. In the time it took you to write your reply you could probably have made an attempt to answer my question. Everyone's a moderator..
Device memory is about 2gb. Its a seperate part where apps are stored, so if you want to regain memery there delete apps. But you will only gain about 400mb max and have no apps.

Thanks matey. Ah, in that case, I'm fine with 1.61GB if I'm only down from 2GB. I was more curious than anything else.
So all apps get installed to the 2GB device memory only, and the USB storage is only for storing media right?

No, lots of apps also store their data on SD.
Usb storage is external flashdrive if your using an usbOTG adapter.
The SgsII has mainly a 16Gb version although some have reported owning 32Gb versions. That comes down to about 1.8Gb for apps separate, and 11.5Gb for your data.
Some apps can be installed on the 11.5Gb partition. That mainly depends on the app itself.

Thats the thing, for what the partitioning table (PIT in Odin) is used.
On my phone:
aroung 500MB for the system
2GB for appdata
12.5GB for userdata
These are around 15GB, to be correct i must say 15GiB, because if you convert it to the normal space everyone is talking about, you will get 16GB.
(1GiB = 1,073GB)

What's the ROM size?

From the specs, it says 4GB ROM + 768MB RAM. But why am I getting 2G ROM + 600 RAM instead? I don't have a bad emmc. I bought mine a year and a half ago and this has always been a question I would like to see an answer.
I have 621MB RAM which is about standard on this device. That's just the way it works out. Ever checked the actual storage of a flash drive compared to what it says on the package?
Also, it's good to verify specs on multiple sites.

Thanks. If I remember it correctly, the tmo website said it has 4GB ROM. And I also checked the gsmarena and it says it has 4GB too. However I've got 1.13GB for the app partition and about 800 for cache and system. That adds to 2GB total which is half of the stated ROM size. It's not a big deal but I would like to figure it out weather it actually only has 2GB or it's hidden.
There are several partitions for boot, recovery, bootloader, etc. Perhaps when all are added together they come close to 4gb?

Unfortunately no. I used storage analyser and disc usage apps to check my partitions and I added them up. It's close to 2GB.

[Q] Low on memory

Is anyone else experiencing high ram usage on their s4? I'm down to only about 450 mb of free memory. I barely have anything running, too.

"Free ram is wasted ram" this is android not windows...you dont need to worry about low ram, amdroid handles ram difderntly than computers...and more efficiently. If the ram ever becomes too loaded to function smoothly android os will automatically clear the least ysed applications freeing up some ram.

Under settings, application manager...one of the tabs allows you to clear apps from ram
However there is no benefits on doing this...in fact only disadvantages. Clearing apps will jot improve overall device speed, it will however require those apps that were cleared to take longer to reopen as they are no longer stored in the ram.
If a specific app is slow or not running as it usually does than it may be wise to force stop it under settings application manager

Facebook beta 3.6 is giving me a low memory error sporadically.
Alright, I gotchu. Thanks, I'm new to this whole android, rooting, and flashing business haha

(help needded) can't find my 8gb space

Hello everyone
Sorry for my last post. I didn't attach pic in that. Here it is. My model has 8gb space. Apps and files take only 4gb. And alloted space is 4.7gb for this. As a result I get storage space minimum notification constantly. So can anyone tell me where the remaining space is and is it possible to shift some space to storage
Thank you

There is 8gb there, but it's partitioned into about 4gb each. One for the OS and the other for media. So, you'll only be able to utilize 4gb for app storage.
Thanks for the reply. Is there any way to reduce the space alloted to OS?

Have you cleaned your app cache? I was getting low and was amazed how much space I gained. You can do it app by app or download something like this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gannicus.android.cacheclearer
