Hi,
This is kind of a basic question, but since I don't have a Transformer, I have no way to testing it. I've tested it on a Samsung before.
What do you see on the typical Windows XP machine when you plug your Transformer into it? Does it show up as a USB storage device? Can you move stuff directly from PC to Transformer?
I tried a Samsung Tab 10.1. I couldn't move anything into the Samsung, and it has no micro-SD card to use as alternate.
I'm using win 7 but it does what you describe when you plug it in...it's seen as a drive. (the MicroSD card that is.)
If you're running Windows XP with Media Player 11 installed (the easiest way to make it work in my experience), the Transformer shows up as a portable device in My Computer. You can move files to and from the device, but it's not assigned a drive letter (I think the SD card is if you have one). It's also not recognized as USB Mass Storage - Honeycomb doesn't connect that way.
The drawback is if you want to use utilities or apps that reference a drive letter (like iTunes Agent), it won't work. Also, because it's not USB Mass Storage, the tablet won't be recognized by simpler devices like the PS3 - therefore you cannot share data. I move data between my Galaxy S Captivate (2.2) and my PS3 all the time via USB cable, but I can't do it with my Transformer - though I've yet to try with an SD card installed.

Are you sure? Mine doesn't show as usb drive but as a mobile device. I can access both internal storage and microSD but with really bad transfer speed. How do you access the microSD as a drive?

Oh...maybe it does...I assumed that since it showed up as storage that it was a drive...I assumed that it was the same thing.
Thanks for the quick responses.
Interesting that both Samsung Tab and Transformer are running basically the same OS, but for some reason the Samsung Tab 10.1 won't let me put files in it via USB. It doesn't have a micro-SD slot, so it's a big problem.
Why, wonder why the big difference between the two if they're the same Android 3.1.
So I noticed that my sd card didn't want to show up on my PC. Or one of them at least. It turned out that the one I could see on my PC was the emmc card, and not the external. It wasn't too big a deal really. As I was fooling around, I installed a new driver (as part of installing theADB/SDK stuff) and then all of a sudden, the cards were reversed. I could see my external card, but not the emmc card. At one point, I swear i could access both cards on my PC. What can I do to remedy this situation so I can access both cards?

Tell us more. What version of software are you running? Stock, CM7, CM9, CM10 or something else? What version of software on PC? Windows, Linux, Mac? Do two drives show up but only one displays anything? Or just one drive? Are they drive letters or under other devices? And you are talking about plugging the USB cable in, not putting chip in card reader?
Thanks. Sorry for the lack of info. I am running CM7.2, and looking for the sd cards through windows 7. Honestly, I am not sure I have this same problem on my home laptop, but definately on my work laptop. Both drives show up, usually as E: and F:, but when I click one of them, it says "please insert disk into removeable disk f:"
Does that help?

Yes that helps. The problem is you are not activating the USB connection. You need to pull up the notification area and you will see a selection for turning on computer access. Until you do that the drives are not active on the PC.
Another way to do it is to use the app NookColorUMS. You can get it on my tips thread linked in my signature. See item B7 in my second post of that thread. That app lets you select whatever partition you want to populate the drives on the PC.

Not trying to be a smart ass but in three words "Google Cloud Storage". They want to push you to one of their paid services.
I use USB OTG Helper to resolve all my external storage access issues both with rooted Stock and various custom ROMs. I get full RW access on SD cards formatted as ext2,3,4 and external HDD formatted with NTFS. Of course FAT16/32 access still work. This product is so good I bought the donate version just to show respect to the developer.

One last thought, is this a self powered HDD? If it is not maybe the N10 is not supplying enough power for the HDD to function. I read some people had OTG attached HDD drives that only worked if the N10 had a charge above some percentage and failed when it dropped below that percentage.
My only HDD test was with a self powered device.
After trying a whole bunch of methods, here is the best way I've found to free up internal storage by moving apps to an external drive.
Complete step-by-step Guide with screenshots
tl;dr version:
1. Mount the drive with StickMount
2. Move the files and "trick" the Fire TV with FolderMount

Yes, you can move XBMC's data with this method. But since XBMC is so customizable, modifying advancedsettings.xml like JJ-KwiK suggests is a better option.
awesome, thank you!
Sweet! Thanks for the guide.
So this guide will let you run apps from an external?? Sweet i need to buy a new one lol.. Thanks

xbmc run well from external drive
Hi Guys
Just need some input w.r.t. flash drives and external drives.
What is the biggest size flash drive or external drive we can use on the AFTV?
Fat32 or NTFS file system?
Do you need a powered multi usb device to make the external drive work?
Must you use a powered external drive to make it work in the fire tv?
Hope someone can clear it up.
I connected a non powered multi usb device on the fire tv. the Rii keyboard with bluetooth usb and my 4gb flash both worked on it, but my 1.5TB 2.5" does not want to pick it up.

I'm using a 32GB USB Flash Drive and it works. It's NTFS. Spinning disk must be powered externally for both 2.5" or 3.5".
External SSD might work unpowered....I don't have a drive to test this theory.

I have two Toshiba 5400 RPM Canvio that are unpowered 2.5 and work fine, and a Seagate 500MB 2.5 in a cheapie external USB case that works fine as well.
Yeah I don't understand I've just found my Verbatim USB 3 external 2.5" works but my transcend external 2.5" doesn't. Both are the same size and both are NTFS. I checked and they both work on my PC. Guess it's luck of the draw for 2.5". I can't get an external 3.5" to work...Anyone else?

3.5 inch should be 12V so they would need an external power supply. As far as not seeing a powered 3.5 it could be one of a hundred different issues.

My 2TB 3.5" external works with a 12v power.
External Harddrive 3TB, 3.5" formatted as NTFS works fine for me.
Different sorts of USB stick's up to 32MB formatted as fat32 or NTFS gave me no trouble either.
Images gone after moving Thumbernails to USB stick
Hello,
I 'moved' the Thumbernails folder, using the advancedsettings.xml method. After a new scan run I see all the movie-descriptions, but I do no longer, see any images. They are just not shown..
Any idea, whats going wrong ? I'm really new to XBMC
edit:
After the scan, I deleted the whole content in Andtroid/.../userdata/Thumbernails. The folder itself is still there.
(6GB usb stick/NTFS)
edit2: solution found!
xbmc: System->File Manager->Profile directory->Database delete the Textures13.db and restart the xbmc.
All thumbnails are displayed again!
I tried this method with NFSMW which is approx 4gb after updating and it copied everything over the my usb BUT when i mount it the game says my usb storage device has no room for an update -_- (even though the directory copied is the most up to date version and capacity is 16gb) also, this method does nothing to free up space on the FTV. I had to go in manually to my android/data folder and remove the directory to free up space myself. Might want to add that to the description.

You are mistaken or did something wrong. FolderMount moves the files AND deletes the originals. If the files are set as "mounted" in FolderMount, it will appear as if they are still on the Fire TV. Meaning, if you "ls" the original directory in /sdcard/, you will see all the original files. However, the files are not actually on the Fire TV. To verify this for yourself, go to Settings > About to see your available free space before and after following my directions. You will see your free space increase.

this url states that USB harddrive is not possible.
then how are you guys making it possible ?
must the fire tv be rooted ? before this feature is possible.
i think this is an important topic. as the device is now rooted, alot users would download apps, and they would need the space.
I would like to use USB harddrive with my XBMC.
please advice.
Thanks a lot.

With root and StickMount both USB drives and Thumbdrives work great
After using a 16GB Darcy for 10 days I'm now tempted to exchange it for a Pro. Basically, I could use the extra space. I was going to buy a USB 3, 500GB ssd for adopted storage which will put me at the cost of a Pro anyway. I tried adopted storage on Darcy with a 320GB HD and set it all up, but as soon as I opened ES file explorer and gave it the permission it asked for, I lost access to the disk and had to forget it then reformat it. My guess is I should have Denied that permission request because once ES cached it's files and wrote to the disk it must have invalidated it. I'll know that for next time but my point is that adopted storage on Android can be tricky. So I'm wondering, can you hear the SSHD in the Pro spin when things are quiet? That would be a con for me. And the biggest con is the lack of ir blaster on pro remote. I have volume on my TV working with this and how would I accomplish that with the Pro? I don't believe CEC can control volume on my TV. Just CEC power control is working for me. If someone with some experience with these models can chime in here it will help me make a decision. Thanks.

Thanks for the info. I want to clarify that ES didn't ask for root permission regarding the adopted storage. It was simple storage permission request, "access storage, photos, etc." ES may have viewed it as external storage although it was setup as internal through Android. I'll have to experiment with that again to confirm that's what happened.

I couldn't agree more. ES has practically became malware over the years. On my phone I use Amaze. I installed Amaze on the Shield but can't use it without a mouse. I just downloaded Xplore as you recommend and will give it a try. Speaking of mouse, I'm looking to purchase a Bluetooth RII i8 mouse/keyboard/ remote. Is Bluetooth the way to go over Wifi-Direct on newer Shields?

I've a 2017 16gb model with a 250GB Samsung EVO SSD in a USB 3 enclosure. I filled it with 50+ games (more than 10 of LightSpeed Studios) and emulators, the speed is awesome and the problems non existant. The free space is aroud 100 GB.
For file management I use Solid Explorer. It's not remote friendly, but you can use it very well with the joystick.

I ended up keeping the 16GB darcy and added a 500GB Samsung T5 SSD as adopted stage. Seems like a good setup so I'm happy. I also have a new USB 3 hub on the inner port. Now I just have to figure out how to bypass the convertible mode on the outer port so I can have adb on without losing the ability to hook up media/storage devices to that port. I may have found a way but it requires a factory reset after the build.prop string is added. I'll get around to trying it out soon.
Sorry to barge in on this convo - but I have a similarish qu. I've just bought the 16Gb today (not shipped yet) and will be either using a 256 flash drive, or my 1TB WD USB 3 HDD.
The thing that's putting me off is the fact that when you add the HDD/SD to the Shield, it can't be read on a PC afterwards. So how on earth would I transfer anything to it once it's been formatted by the Shield?

You're not barging in, that's what xda is for. So I'm not sure what your goal is but if you want to add to the Android internal storage then you will keep that Drive of your choice plugged into the Shield and consider it integrated. To transfer files back and forth you could use another drive of your choice which would just be a transfer drive. That Drive is not formatted by the Shield but it's readable and you can manage it with a file manager. My preferred method would be just using a usb 3 cable (usb a to usb a) Shield to computer directly. It's basically the same way you would hook up your phone to the computer to transfer files. Another way which is supported by most file managers would be wireless transfer. You have a lot of options. I recently just added a Samsung SSD as adoptable storage which is now considered part of the internal storage. It's working well.

Haha I know, I'm just being courteous
That makes perfect sense though. In which case I might use the 1TB hard drive for removable storage (movies etc) and then get a 128Gb flash drive to replace the integrated 16Gb (ie adoptable).
The other thing is, I didn't buy the Shield controller. I do have a spare Xbox One & PS4 pad. Do they work equally as well - bearing in mind that I'll be using it for PC streaming, emulation and Android gaming?
Cheers!

Just to clarify, it won't replace the 16GB internal storage but add to it. The Android System will still remain on the 16GB internal but the drive you add as adopted will contain the Data portion after you set it up and have the Shield "move Data" to it. It's not a perfect system and some apps will still prefer to install to the 16GB. But if you enable developer options and check "force apps to external regardless of manifest" you will have the ability to move the stubborn apps to your adopted storage drive.

As far as the controller, I'm not 100% sure. If those controllers use Bluetooth to pair they should work. You can select settings-add accessory and attempt to pair them. If you look around you will find that answer.
If you change the external storage as a GPT drive instead of MBR. the nVidia Shield can use it for added internal storage. But it won't do it without this change which you can do on a Windows PC with Disk Management. You don't need a PRO.

Yeah, we're way of topic at this point. I decided a while ago I'm not exchanging for the Pro. Instead I added a Samsung T5 500GB. Your post is very interesting, can you explain further? I'm a Mac user so I did originally format my disk with the GUID partition scheme (GPT) before setting it up as adoptable storage. But from my experience, you can pretty much add just about any disk I ever tried as adoptable storage regardless of the partition scheme. The Shield ends up formatting it beforehand although I'm not sure if it changes the partition scheme for you. What more can you do with GUID that you can't do with MPT?
