Bit Confused Guys Please Help - Galaxy S II General

Hi
I have gotten ok at flashing roms and rooting eventually but I cant tell if I have the latest stock rom for my phone there always seems to be a later one than I have wheres a good place to keep checking for latest firmwares?
Also I rooted a stock rom then banged ninphetamine kernal 2.1.3 on there is that a good thing to do with rooted stock or just leave it for custom roms?
Is this the latest firmwares for sammy 2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1224423
my current build is xxkg6 so I assume KH3 will be even newer am I right?
Thanks guys

Generally speaking, the 2nd character references the month of release and the final number is the release number, so H builds are newer than G builds, and 8 releases are newer than 5 releases.
A - January
B - February
...
...
H - August
I - September
I say generally because there have been exceptions, where some regions have had versions released that have newer names than ones released later in other regions.
But you can usually rely on that rule of thumb.
As for flashing them, I tend to wait and let other, more eager, people flash and then watch for their response. Most people on here are pretty vocal if there's issues, so you can tell what to go for and what's not worth it. Just keep reading

KH3 works well and many custom roms are now KH3 .

thanks guys - what about changing kernels to ninphetamine does it bring any benefit to stock roms that are rooted?

I can't speak from experience. You're best bet would be to ask people that have used it, on the dev thread. Bear in mind though that you won't get the same answer twice!

Someone having good success with speedmod & rooted KH3 so will try that.....
thanks

Newest Firmware

Which firmware is the latest release? There are so many :/
I'm currently running the stock which is I9000XXJF3
Help please?
Wow.. the SGS forum support sucks compared to the Hero's.
Try the Android development forum, you might have more luck there. If you're phone is on I9000XXJF3, there's been no official update to that ROM.
You've waited 15 mins and not even posted on the right section last dev version is I9000XXJP3 it's written everywhere learn the serch form

we don't live here you know? people got real life outside of this forum
newest firmware would be the one from Bell, unless you want to count the alpha/beta leaked froyo which is on the Dev section as people mentioned
Newest release is JM5 which is 2.1
Newsest release for 2.2 would be JP3, which seems not to be usefull for every day use, at least thats what i read.
Most stable release imo is JM2
JM2, JM5 and JP3 are both unofficial releases.
Your rom is the newest official release, as far as i know.
hope this helps....

Clockwork recovery status?

I am waiting for the Clockwork recovery DHD to be ready. It seams to be ready for G2, DZ and MT4G. Is there a problem getting it to work properly on DHD?
I know there is a test version out, but i dont think you can flash stuff with it.
Paul(Modaco) Tweeted that a realese was close several days ago. Nothing yet.
I was just wondering if anyone had any info on the progress?
I read Leedroids twitter and he sad he will have his DHD on Monday so roms will start to come.

Patience is a virtue!! Seriously though, we're very lucky to even be in the position to be talking about using custom recoveries and ROMs. We all knew the situation in regards to the lockdown from HTC when we bought the phone, so it's a bit early to be panicking, especially with all the breakthroughs of late.
Paul only tweeted regarding his rebuilt CWM on Friday, and then came into the thread linked by Evostance above to state it needed some tweaks and testing before it would be released.
The G2 is huge in America hence the rapid development of CWM and unofficial builds of CyanogenMod appearing. The DZ, being almost identical hardware has benefitted from this fact. Unfortunately we don't have the same Dev base as the G2 but nonetheless our Devs' are just as dedicated and working hard towards achieving custom ROMs.
There is a modified HBOOT (ENG) image enabling ADB etc. in the Android Development section if you literally cannot wait any longer. If you can then just keep checking the sub forum for the latest developments.
Not long to go now!
Regards.

[Q] is there a .zip update thread?

I've been searching for days, but failed to find results. So here I'm am, years later finally posting another question post. xD
Was just wondering if there was a thread that had a compiled list of .zip updates in it. I'm running tytungs Stock NexusHD2 v1.9G rom. And for one, it is amazingly fast, and the best rom I've used so far. But I thought it would be fun to add a few zip updates I could find withought having to flash a rom that's loaded with a ton of custom updates. Having this stock rom gives me a good template to add some updates of my liking but can't seem to find any. Thanks for the help if it can be offered. And big ups to all the devs!

I meant add ons not updates I guess. Don't know if you guys could tell the difference in what I meant.

Unification

----------------------------------------------
Let me try this new ROM on my Xperia X10...
Wait!
Is it Xperia regular or HD?
Is it X10a or X10i?
Branded, unbranded or never branded?
Which kernel version?
Which baseband version?
Country?
To name a few...
----------------------------------------------
Things used to be a lot simpler a few months ago...
Today ROMs are being designed for different basebands. If I want to test another ROM I'll have to downgrade (or upgrade) baseband before I can install it with XRecovery.
I guess this will only come to an end when SE completely abandon us (if they haven't already). Probably all later development will be carried out on the latest baseband (if it's possible and if it brings best performance, improvements, etc.).
Of course I always take in consideration that devs (thank you so much jerpelea, zdzihu, trip and rdannar, to name a few) have a life. And that they don't have to update their personal projects.
Will a unification ever occur?

More to come?
I've been trying to get the basics of the terminology used around the forums when describing the different parts of the Android OS.
There are still certain differences I will eventually grasp, such as the difference between ROM and Kernel.
A quick Google search sent me to the Android Developer Guide where a very clear illustration separates the Android stack:
(Forum rules forbid me from posting external links, I'll add the URL and image once I've graduated from Forum Newcomer)
What I still don't understand and I can't seem to find within the XDA forums or other forums in general is the separation of ROM and what's the relationship to the Baseband.
Is there a limitation to what can be included in a particular ROM? If so, is this defined by the Kernel? The Libraries? The handset maker?
This might not the correct forum or thread this question, but any help or point in the right direction will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,

[OFFICIAL] [CUSTOM] Android 4.0.1 by Samsung for SGS2

After a long wait Samsung has finally started testing Android 4.0.
Last week our “insider” presented us with XXKP1.
The Android version of this ROM is Android 4.0.1.
The build date is 7 december 2011.
As you may know of us we often get these leaks prior to release.
After we did some checks on it we can confirm that we’re dealing with a “CUSTOM” Samsung build.
We strongly advise people who only flash stock ROMs to not flash this.
As you all may know we only offer stock ROMs so you will not find this firmware on our usual firmware page.
We at Sammobile offcourse have tested this ROM in all curiousity.
Samsung uses Android 4.0 with their own TW-Launcher and Android 4.0 tweaks.
Below you will find a video review of this ROM.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISAI6qbQm6U&list=UUzQl4TBDKoGyVhpL2ykCJgw&feature=plcp
What works in I9100XXKP1?
All the Basics work like calling , sms , internet and more.
Some applications havent been worked out correct so they will force cose on stress.
Because we are dealing with a “CUSTOM” ROM here it can occur that the phone will react very slow from time to time.
There is also the chance of some “RANDOM REBOOTS”
We at Sammobile advise people to not use thhis ROM for daily usage.
If you want to download this firmware then you can do so via the provided link below.
Again if you only flash STOCK ROMs then dont flash this.
Because you flash this rom with “unsecure” kernel the phone thinks its “CUSTOM” and will start counting on your custom counter.
You will loose your warranty bercause of this.
