Airplay - Eee Pad Transformer General

Something pretty cool that apple will implement into ios 5

I hope this gets picked up by Google and devs, as it looks really cool.

Try going to the website in this post... it will not let me post the link, sorry.

I have not tried this, but it appears to do the same thing.
There is also another app called Skifta that is DLNA certified as a streaming app.

It says it has been around since 2009... Apple isn't all that innovative after all, only very good at marketing.

Horrible at marketing, not very good.
From the tv ads I tought it was their renaming of DLNA (laaaaame), but this is incredibly cool and completely different! Aside from that the PS3 had DLNA support in 2007 already, so it's even older even if I'm not sure how much.
DLNA offers you to stream multimedia files (video, pictures, music) to a compatible reciever, but that's all. You wouldn't be able to watch video from an app like Hulu and so on, just files you have on your device. Also, nothing like seeing on a tv (passing through a special device like Apple TV, true) the game/app you are using at the moment, if it was just DLNA. It's closer to a wireless HDMI transmitter/reciever, but it costs way less than that!

Airplay has been around for a while. It is similar to UPNP/DNLA.
Anyway, Airplay is an RTSP variant with DRM. It's been reverse engineered, and there is an a freeware C lib for it. The biggest advantage to Airplay is that it probably had tighter standards. UPNP allows pretty much anything, which means you end up with a lot of cross device format compatibility issues.
I haven't seen a lot of really good uses for either. DNLA is kind of fun to DJ with and maybe should pictures/videos from your phone. I think a really cool app would be to take the SD card from my camera and send the pictures to a TV. You can kind of do this, but I haven't seen anything real slick.
If you have a device that supports AirPlay/DNLA, it likely that it can already do whatever you need to through that device and use your phone/tablet as a remote (This is how I use my Onkyo TX-NR509). The problem is that both protocols rely on a wireless network, which is susceptible to drop outs.
FYI: You should check out iMediaShare. It's pretty impressive (I'm not sure it works on Transformer, it's really geared more toward phones).

How about a cheaper, more efficient, more universal solution transformer owners can already utilize: HDMI mirroring...
WiDi (if it ever becomes standardized) will then blow airplay/DLNA out of the water anyways and only requires a firmware update in existing WiFi modules.

Dev Request - HDMI Desktop Out

Ok, I'm getting this "phone". I've been sitting around waiting for a release date for what seems like a year now, lol.
Here is my one request, from the marvelous XDA dev community, who has never ceased to amaze me in the years I've been here.
I want this thing to do HDMI out. I'm not talking pushing a YouTube video out of the HDMI port, I want to see Android on my 24" monitor. I want to be able to use a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard to run the controls, and I want to be able to dock my Streak and use it on a larger display. 720p/1080p would be a huge bonus, but I have no idea what limitations are in place there.
Ok, that's it. Make that happen, and I will be very happy.
If you pay £55 for the Dell Home AV Kit it will do this I believe......
Granted, I don't have a Streak on which to try it out...but isn't that only for videos (YouTube, video files, etc)? As far as I'm aware, you don't get the actual desktop, right?
I don't have one either, but in a video I saw it appeared that the dock only pushes the video through the HDMI and not the android "desktop."
I too would love to be able to do this though!
Ah right thats not too good then, the Samsung Galaxy seems to be TV-Out and just replicated the system as on the screen, I'm thinking of buying a Nokia N900 to play with as it has TV out and would let me play SNES / Mega Drive games etc when I'm in a hotel room.
I wonder if full TV Out is something we could hack
£55 is a lot for just movies out...i was hoping for full android on my big tv

Yeah, that's for sure. Big deal, if I wanna watch just movies, I'll find a computer and do it. The power of HDMI-out is in being able to use Android on your phone on the go, and then docking it and using it as a netbook-replacement when at a desk (or as a HTPC when in the living room, etc.)
Give it a few months once the Chinese get their hands on it and they will churn out the Accessories and flood ebay
I need this also for a bmw idrive integration. I'm sure the community will crack it.

i would love to do this while also running ubuntu it would be like christmas (or when i first heard about android) i would dock it and BAM i would have ubuntu then dissconnect it and id have android

I just bought a BMW with the new 1280 pix CiC I-Drive display. With a Motorola Bionic, I'm hoping to send TV to the phone via SlingBox and send the HDMI out from the phone to the display in the car.
Thoughts?

Will the Xoom have full HDMI out?

I don't know if this can be answered yet or not, but I thought I would put it out there.
The Notion Ink Adam has HDMI out, and it outputs the entire screen via HDMI. From dashboard and internet to games and videos, it's all output via HDMI with apparently good audio to boot!
Anyone know if the Xoom is going to be the same? Or is it going to be like my HTC EVO and only output the gallery & YouTube via HDMI?
Might be a small detail, but it's a decider for me. I can really see the advantage of having full HDMI out.
I doubt it's a feature that can be enabled afterwards either, since people have been working on it for about 7 months on the EVO without much success.
This may be something that has to wait until release, but I thought I would check. Someone, somewhere may have mentioned it and I'm just not finding it.
The only official word I've seen is from Moto's press release, which states:
"It allows consumers to experience HD content right on the device, supports 1080p HD video and HDMI output to display content on larger HD screens, and plays video and other rich web content seamlessly with Adobe® Flash® Player."
Doesn't say if the full UI will be output, though that's probably more of a question for Honeycomb in general than the Xoom itself. Frankly, I'd be surprised if the full UI wasn't output natively in Honeycomb - it's such an obvious feature.

What's on stage and what's in retail stores are often very different.
Besides, I thought there was some copy write issue or something regarding HDMI output? Why else would it be disabled for everything except 2 apps on the HTC EVO?
+1 What's shown in a demo can rarely be counted on to be seen in a store. Nothing's set in stone until it's in your hands.
I've wondered about the HDMI-out on the EVO. Maybe it has something to do with that old frame-cap, or perhaps an actual hardware limitation.

If HDMI is properly implemented, it is using HDCP between source (the phone) and sink (the display) which gives an encrypted path for any content that is flagged as requiring this path (i.e. copy protected).
From a practical perspective, clear transmission of HDMI is difficult to capture because of the bandwidth required for HD sources. It's getting more practical with the advent of high throughput SSD devices but it's very expensive to put together a system to capture it.
I can't speak to specifics of the EVO -- I have yet to hook it up to a display.
It would support full HDMI out as all tegra2 devices I have seen so far supports that.

Can someone help me understand the draw of having an HDMI port on a phone or tablet? I can't fathom many uses for that sort of thing. I suppose it'd be nice to have in the rare event I wanted to show some pictures off on the big screen at a family gathering or something, but I just can't imagine too many situations where it would come in handy.
I think hdmi on a portable device is is good for playing hd movies. Download a movie to your pc, transfer to your device, and connect hdmi. More convenient than burning a dvd

More and more hotels have hd tv's, plugging your tablet in to watch a movie would be awesome.
Same goes for displaying a presentation at work, or a spreadsheet.
Browsing the internet, playing games, etc.

it does support full hdmi out i was watching a ces video about the xoom on youtube last night that showed and answered this question
Every time that I’ve seen it discussed, the reps mention full HDMI “mirror mode”. Several expanded upon that to say that “whatever you see on the tablet, you’d see on the tv”. Granted these videos were primarily from CES and I got the impression that each of the people I saw talk weren’t terribly confident about what they were saying.
Also, just scavenged the following:
Ok…apparently I can’t post links yet, so this is gonna be tricky:
Motorola Rep at 1:08 into the video, talks about mirror mode
Search you tube for "ud8r7Mo8af4".
----
“It also has a mirror-mode option, in which whatever you see on the screen – video, Web pages, apps, etven the entire user interface – is literally mirrored onto your HDTV, meaning you can play Angry Birds in full 55″ HD!”
-mobilementalism.com (search bing for Mobilementalism.com xoom hype, first hit)
Despite folks throwing around this "mirror mode" term, it wouldnt surprise me if it didnt work that way once we get them... but there seems to be enough to hold out hope.
i will add this question to "for those on the borderline, what do you want to know" thread

[Q] Wanting Info before I buy

Im considering purchasing an Iconia Tab, spec wise it's a decent all around tablet. What I want is how well will this supplement the rest of my household and mobile devices, can I use this as a fill in for my bulky lap top when I decide to not carry it around, how well will this stream videos across the hdmi port to my tv rather than buying another box for my entertainment system. Just info in general is what I seek, and who better to ask than you guys.
Yes this device is awesome.. Streaming thru hdmi does work . I have done so with much success .Thou there are limitations.. READ THE FIRST STICKY Thread . by Wearcat.. she is awesome with this type of stuff .
as far as other things ..
things i use my tablet for
only thing i check email on.
browser forums
web site stuff google music and can browser my home network from anywhere
GPS
so it can replace most of the things you HAVE TO DO Short of editing images and major documents typing is not great on the tab unless you plug in a keyboard ..
i would say if your buying a tablet get this one over the available tablets.. or wait until tegra 3 comes out.. but waiting will be more costly new tech is not cheap
Not really looking for something to completely repalce my lap top as of yet, granted I havent turned it on really in months other than to charge one of my phones from time to time. Acer to me seems to build a reliable product, I have 2 17" laptops, and I purchased two Acer netbooks for my children. It looks like it would be a great supplement to the rest of my android fleet as well. Really just need something that I can take when I travel light, read emails, check my google voice, read books, watch a video here or there, more or less something to replace some dutie of my phone while at home and to replace some duties of my laptop while away. Will probly use it as gps too since its got a bigger screen would look great mounted in my truck OOOH better yet remove my radio and install bluetooth speakers with a custom built dash mount.

If you live in the US you're in for a treat as you can use Google Videos for renting and streaming movies and Google Music to store all your songs there and streaming them too so you don't have to use tablet's own storage space for them.
And yes, displaying videos through HDMI works just fine, though there are several limitations. Like for example, you will only get 720p output if you use non-default player, the default player is AFAIK the only one that can do 1080p output, but then again the default player doesn't support .MKV files or subtitles or anything.
As for actual movies themselves: the tablet only supports 1080p basic-profile, meaning that you will have to transcode almost everything you might already have. Not to mention that the tablet also doesn't handle AC3 audio, so again you will have to downmix audio first before you transfer the file to the tablet.
You have to decide for yourself if it's worth the hassle, but I would personally suggest getting a Tegra3 - based tablet instead even though it's more expensive, just to save you from the hassle from having to transcode everything. It really is a terribly hassle if you are a film buff like myself.

Not a big movie buff, just like to watch them, and really for me watching a movie on it would be a once in a blue moon thing and not a big deal breaker. Most typically stream movies through my xbox, and my tv only plays at 720p so no 1080 for me as of yet. I did read your thread about the handbrake looks involved but not extremely advanced difficult. Thanks for your input think Ill go with this until the tegra 3 comes out then weigh my options then. Maybe by then Ill be able to get a new TV to compliment a new tablet.
And seriously you edited your post because of a missing semicolon? I bet it pains you to read the gibberish I just typed.

Yes she does...I think its so cute.her and a few of the guys are on me often for my lack of typing and spelling skills.
But they loves me so i not cry too often. Giggles.
The post for using Handbrake to convert the vids has worked perfectly fine on all the videos I have had to convert and is much easier to do than the instructions make it sound. The instructions are actually just really detailed, so there's less to do than what you read.
One of my favorite uses now for the tablet... I have a Super Nintendo again!. I finally got a wired generic PS3 remote, using some SNES emulator (forgot which), connected to my TV over HDMI, and some, um... "backed up" SNES games and BAM, full SNES center again. I am such a nerd for "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past".
Also, when I'm feeling really lazy, I use TeamViewer to remote into my HTPC and use it as my wireless keyboard/mouse. AND, if you have a Sony Media Streamer, there is a Android app to allow you to control your N100 or N200 from the tablet. Oh, and I read a lot of eBooks on it.
All in all, just as you mentioned, this tablet is a great "supplement", and since I never have the need for heavy duty computing while on the go, the tablet is all I've ever needed when I am not home. The main reason for me choosing this one ovr the others was the built in ports such as the miniUSB, USB, HDMI, and audio ports. Yeah those may have added a little girth and heft to the device, but those were bonuses for me instead of getting a device where you need to buy different adapters to have the same ports.

Then you should have no issues A500 works just fine for streaming movies, too, though there is no DLNA client on it by default. You can install one from the Market anyways so it's not such a huge issue.

Well I bought it last night and I gotta say what an amazing piece of hardware. I havent found a feature yet that I dislike. Seems to have ample computing power for what I need, and the display is fairly decent sems a little washed out on the white side but still good. Thanks for everyones help.

your very welcome thank everyone by reading before flashing so that you don't mess the tablet up.
Something that im guessing is easily done.
Flashed mine 30or so times and never bricked thou close once.

No, we have to have "correct" punctuation here... Wani wani wani...
Just get the tab. For the money, you will not find a finer device.
Or a better lot of people to support it
I just bought mine a couple of days ago and I am very happy with it. Trying to read as much as I can before the rooting process begins.... You will be happy with it.

No HDMI passthru - Is anyone else rumored to make hardware?

I was really disappointed to learn that this doesn't have HDMI passthru. I was hoping that the whole user experience would be an overlay on the video signal like what they are doing with the new Xbox. Are there any rumors of other manufacturers that will be making hardware for this platform that might be doing HDMI passthru or does Android TV just not support that at this time?
What? DAMNIT!! Was hoping that it would be able to replace my Logitech Revue, which I would then move to the den! UGH!!! Nevermind, may not buy this then, or just get it for the den. This sucks!!
I don't understand why you guys expected hdmi passthrough. There was no mention of it at IO and I think they even came out and said they were not going that route anymore. AndroidTV is about the future which means all streaming, all in one box, one input. Use a HTPC and an XBMC front end to watch live and recorded tv on the nexus players and there is no longer a need for any STB so no need for HDMI passthrough. This is what I do already with my firetvs [emoji106]

Whether or not that is the future or not remains to be seen. Regardless it is far from being a mainstream viewing approach for the life of this product. The vast majority of consumers will continue to have a cable or satellite service for the forseeable future.

did you even watch the keynote?
android TV is about software - not hardware. it has a tv input framework built right in so manufacturers can take advantage of lots of different tv input options, be it integrated dvb, hdmi input, sat>ip etc.
the nexus player is the first of a long line of android tv devices., no, it does not have hdmi in - but that does not mean that other boxes in the future from different manufacturers wont.
they are actively working with STB manufacturers so that one day - you might not even need to use hdmi input and it will all be done over IP.
all this talk of using xbmc as a frontend is a bit stupid when android tv has it built right in. you just need to be patient for more hardware to come on the market.
https://developer.android.com/training/tv/tif/index.html
Have there been any other vendors that have definitely announced products coming or is everything a rumor this point?

Using xbmc as a front end isn't stupid though as that works today while nothing else I am aware of does. Of course if a better method of getting live tv and DVR functionality on android tv comes along I will be more than willing to switch to whatever is the BEST method for my purposes.

Games like Crysis 3 will run natively on it (not in the cloud).
(Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)
Correct, there are a few big-name games being modded/re-written to run natively on the platform. Of them, "Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel" , "Doom 3: BFG Edition" , and "Crysis 3". They demoed all of these. Doom3 and Crysis looked like they ran pretty well. Borderlands ran like a slug and obviously needed a lot more optimization.
That being said, they were really pushing the GRID services heavily, and a number of the announced launch titles were actually GRID games (AKA, PC games virtualized in a server center and streamed to your natively like OnLive or Gaikai/PS-Now, but with the improvements that nVidia has learned from the virtualization and distributed/parallel computing sectors). Anybody who has a current SHIELD device (portable or Tablet) and is within the USA should try it on their current devices at least a few times before it goes subscription model. It is currently in beta and free for all Shield devices, but the servers are in the USA, and the lag times may be unacceptable for some games if you are overseas or just have a laggy connection in general. It will officially come out of beta at the time when the Shield Console goes on sale, which will end the year-plus free ride so far.

I'm more interested what it will eventually do for media myself. And it MUST be rootable for me to even consider it as an option. The specs, at least for the Android world are nothing short of brilliant. However, again I want media apps mainly, such as Kodi, Plex, Netflix playback and casting to be flawless. For now the Nexus Player still turns me on more even with it being wifi only. However, If the NVIDIA Console becomes rootable with FULL custom Android ROM's I am going to change my mind in a heartbeat though, haha.
Considering that all of the nVidia devices to date have been extremely easy to unlock and root, I'm going to say that, yeah, it is mostly likely going to be root-able. Whether it can handle Kodi/Plex/Netflix/Etc at 4K is up to those developers. I know NetFlix has 4K content, but I'm not sure how they differentiate and enable it to be honest.
I have the Nexus Player, and I honestly feel a bit like a chump for getting it and so soon this device is announced. I can always use it in another room or something though.
The big rub with Android TV so far is that the default UI, the LeanBack Launcher, will not display some apps unless they declare themselves as leanback capable (which includes some XML, an art asset or two for different shape/size icons, navigation by controller/keys, and search-ability in some cases). This is a problem I've run into on my Nexus Player. Now, nVidia may snub the LeanBack launcher and may integrate some LeanBack function into their nVidia Hub (like on the Shield Tablet and Shield Portable) which recognizes dozens of media apps, games, and some other things and has a launcher in its own UI. However, if apps make themselves noted for LeanBack, they show up fine on the normal AndroidTV interface. What is better, if they include search, then you can voice search for titles in media apps, and if it includes some sort of rating or recommendation feature (like Hulu or YouTube) they can integrate that and you can get recommendations of what to watch directly in your launcher UI on the top row. Less important for games, maybe important for Game discovery, but definitely an interesting thing for the media watchers amongst us. I doubt recommendation would work on something like Plex, and KODI is its own UI entirely, skipping LeanBack or even nVidia hub (to be honest, I've never been a fan of XBMC's UI, and Kodi hasn't won me over yet either... too fidgety and I can't trust a 'normal' person to be able to understand and operate it). Like I stated above, the machine has the horsepower, but it will be up to app developers to show up with a "flawless" app that will work on it well.
Casting works pretty damn well on my Nexus Player, so I bet with MIMO capable AC spec WiFi, and also ethernet inclusion, you will get pretty damn good casting from Chromecast apps, as that is built into AndroidTV's OS.
Mind you a lot of this is based upon speculation on specs, existing hardware, and my knowledge of the AndroidTV OS and how it functions. Your mileage may vary, terms and conditions subject to actual reality upon device launch.
Yeah chances are my mileage will most likely vary, unless for some odd reason I am forced to run the stock Android TV experience. Since 2010 I have not ran anything stock, so not even sure what that is like, and pretty sure I don't want to know, lol. I was thinking about a full rom flashed on it immediately out of the box, installing Nova Launcher, my Planets live wallpaper, throwing up all the streaming apps onto the home screen, and hoping it just works like it did for the Nexus Player user on Youtube. I want to setup my own media streamer home page and experience. 4K would be future proof, but I have no plans to get rid of the 1080p TV that this device will be attached to, not before it naturally dies on me. I still like the Nexus Player as it will fit right in with all my other Nexus devices. I just need to see more development work taking place on it.

I'm still waiting for this device. Hopefully it's better than the garbage that the Razer Forge TV was. The mods and such at the nVidia forums still say it's coming out in may. The Forge didn't release with Netflix, and there might be a chance the same will happen with the Nvidia Shield Android TV, but I'd be ok with Nvidia as they're going to have 4k display support for netflix.

I just got an email from NVIDIA saying its almost here. It starts out saying the wait is over, but then goes on to say its still not available and that they are giving away one Shield Console everyday until it is available to the public. I hate emails that start off telling you the wait is over but then asks you to wait some more, lol...
Its out!
Although only can see USA and Canada
$199.99 for 16GB
$299.99 for 500GB

I'm not personally too interested in the gaming aspects but that amount of GPU power will prove very, very interesting. My main hope is that somebody can produce a minimal linux install for HTPC with Kodi and mpv builds, or perhaps just a release of Debian.
This device is the perfect low-cost HTPC. It should have more than sufficient CPU power for 10-bit h.264 and h.265 decode as well as sufficient compute power on the GPU side for EWA-type resamplers for chroma and image. I'm given to understand the X1 has full desktop opengl compatibility so it ought to be fully compatible with mpv (though I'm unsure of the state of the ARM builds).
The denver CPU should be more than enough to handle metadata crawling and the likes via Kodi in a non-sluggish fashion too. Christ, this device needs more videophile attention...
Just ordered mine on Amazon. It'll be here Sunday.
XDA needs a forum for it. This old shield handheld forum is for a completely different device.
Just ordered mine from Amazon US to be delivered to the UK next week by expedited delivery. What an absolute beast of a machine.

Shield Console Rooting Experience Thus Far...
Got mine this afternoon and after futzing a bit, tried to root it. It came with developer mode already enabled, one hassle for me is that rebooting to fastboot makes the screen blank so I had to fly blind to oem unlock. So, I've got an unlocked system at the moment, but Super SU is still not working because their is no su on the device. Anyone make it any further than me? I also went ahead and cracked it open to see if there were obvious serial port connection points. Looks like there's a nice spot for a laptop hard drive that is probably populated in the Pro model.
I'm going to look into building my own kernel + ramdisk to try and get the necessary tools in place so SuperSU can work, but I'm a bit worried that the screen isn't going to work and so I'll essentially be flying blind through the whole process.

Does that that mean there is an internal SATA connector or not?

Yeah no SATA connector but there is an option in the settings to install all apps to an external hdd or micro sd card anyways
PS. Anyone know if this will be getting a dedicated XDA Forum? I'll probably be picking one up soon

Hard to tell for sure, looks like there might be solder points for it, but no header. I've got the 500GB on order, will post the diffs when it arrives.
