I did some experiments with my Huawei, hope this information will be useful for you.
In fact : if you reboot your device with GPS turned ON, it starts consume high power in idle mode (about ten times more than without this bug). ( even if you manually turn off GPS !! It is don't matter - is GPS used by any programm or not) If your start any GPS software for a little time - power current will be OK (until next reboot). Look at video and I hope you will understand me.

I think it is because not correct initialization GPS hardware at startup.

what you were mesuring there? milivolts or miliwats? or miliampers? or some radiation?
Current between power supply sorce and Huawei
First method, more difficult, but accurate:

Second method - simply but only relative consumption (not real milliampers here
In second example you need measure millivolts on foil (voltage drop)
In first - milliampers, but first method more difficult - you need power source, capacitor and soldering station
So if you do not want problems with high current consuption in Idle mode - just start (and you may close after ) any GPS software (not system switch GPS on - off, it only allows GPS for application!) after system boot for a one time.
PS this is stock firmware
What is that capacitor doing there for current measurement?
And that foil is acting as a shunt resistor for measuring current as well I assume?

We need a capacitor to remove voltage drop on connected wires since power consumption has peak form. Yes, at second method foil acting as a shunt resistor,I took it from cigarette box.

Is this a hardware or software flaw? (as the guy above asked: Does this apply to custom ROMs?)
I think this is not software nor hardware bug. Any IC needs some initialization step after reset, otherwise state will be undefined. I think stock fw does not perfom requried initialization after startup. I test only MIUI and I have not seen this bug, but this firmware less effective than stock 2.2 Froyo.
Sounds like software if you can fix it by initializing it?

Yes their 2.2 was really unfinished, this GPS bug and the wifi bug that made the phone not to got into deep sleep.

Here is a thread about it but it was discovered long before that, think it was stockwell who found and fixed it

XDA2,
Well i dropped my phone, and it hit the on/off button, phone still works, but cant turn the unit off, this is the button in the top left hand corner.
Can this button be replaced??, if so, where can i get one, and is it possible to fit at home???.
Regards clumsy git.
I don't think so... The switch is soooo small! I think you can't fix the problem by yourself
I've had the same "problem"... sh... so I send the unit to repair....
chris
this might be something for you, it doesn't repair the button but it does allow you to shut down the XDA:

and then do a soft-reset to start the device again
mmm, that s/w works for getting the device OFF
But how on earth do you manage to switch it ON when it is allready off??
There are replacement cases for sale (saw some here), so maybe someone also sells the buttons.
There is a thread on opening the case (that guy had trouble with his speaker and / or mic).
Good luck with it!
You have the same problem as I did lofty The Switch you will find has been snapped off the circuitry mine was in a metal case so no visible damage was on it (It still looked brand new) so i sent it back and got a new one
Hi all
i did exacly the same and it snapped off the switch although it was still in there as i could here it rattling around so i took it apart and soldered it back on... good as new.. youll need a needle nose soldering iron though.. really easy to do...

Why don't you switch on using e.g. the green phone button or one of the other hotkeys?
round about solution
I dropped mine in the case as well and the on off switch broke. I use the red phone button to turn the unit on and assigned using a program called handymenu from Dinar soft - quick action another button on the side as turn off and this system works for me.
Alan
or unlock the buttons so that anytime you press any the unit turns itself on. just be careful of accidentally making a long distance call to iceland. saves you the trouble of mapping or dedicating one particular hardware button for a task. you can then turn off the unit via the method suggested by rey; or use tdlaunch to put a power off icon on the today screen (or put it on the today menu).
cheers
Unfortunately, I didn't read a warning thread about *not* using the Sony Update Service until after I'd started the service for my X1a.
I've been hooked up to the USB with coloured bars for about five minutes, with no progress being noted and nothing changing on the Update Service screen.
Am I in trouble here, or does it just take a while?
12 minutes and no changes.

I guess this is the absolutely first time you connected the usbcable while the phone is in bootloader?
Did an automatic driver install occur when you connected the cable?

It's the first time I've done it with an X1, or any Sony. I've flashed many Synergy and WinMo Motorolas.

I think it must've used the drivers already installed. I heard the connection and detection routines.
7:29 PM to 8:13 PM...that's a long time.
Antivirus and firewall is turned off.

If you didn't see any change at all since you connected the phone I think it's safe to disconnect it and reboot the phone.
This has happened to me, the first time I tried the service.
But If it stopped midway in flashing It's not good..
I'm no pro but as long as the bootloader is intact you should be able to reflash the phone even if the first flash didn't go well and the phone wont boot.
Maybe someone more experienced can shed some light on this...
and while you wait you can search the ROM area for answers.

Re-started it and everything went well.
Visibly snappier, compared to the way it was behaving before.
Thanks for the commiseration.

No problem, I'm just glad I could show some support in this obvious dark hour...
lol, mine is stuck on the forever detecting phone as well. I might just give up, and use my home computer, which is the one I use to flash phones anyway.
my work computer is vista.
Mine is stuck 'identifying' For 15 minutes now... Someone with the same problem?
vista seems to have probs always..... xp works ok ..
I observed the same experience as well. first attempt will always appear hang at the bootloader, w/o any activities (which is a blessing in disguise, imagine stuck halfway into flashing). Disconnecting & connecting again do the trick. I'm on Vista...
I realize that SEUS is "safer" in terms of support, but why don't you just download the image file you need and flash from the memory card?
a lot of people are reporting this problem when the phone is off

The way I see ut is that the button panel has its own backlight and is meant to turn on in complete darkness, but some evo's do it when the phone is off given enough power since the panel's software run a separate lower powered chip, but I'm no engineer. It can be fixed with a firmware update, probably.
Mine did this once. I turned it back on and killed a bunch of apps with advanced task killer, and then it quit. Think it was just a fluke because it hasn't happened since.. and that was about a week ago. If it's happening constantly even after reboots, I'd assume you have installed something that is acting retarded in the background.
actually it's not a software problem... I hard reseted and kepted the phone clean and checked at night. still LED problem being lit. I took it to a store and they are willing to replace the phone
Yes this happens to me alot and i have to remove the battery and put it back in i left the phone like that for 10 minutes and i click every button but does not come back on so have to remove the battery
My wife's has been doing that and it will not stop. Ive rebooted cleaned all apps and nothing. I'm trying to return it but am waiting for bestbuy to call me when they get more phones. Any one have a solution?

wish i had that problem. i really have no need for back lights on the menu. the bleed they cause is terrible when looking at dark movies.
on the droid, in froyo at least, the menu buttons dim when watching a movie or you can use LEDsHack to turn off the lights.
I posted this issue a couple days ago and got no replies. I have noticed this issue on my phone. Sometimes pressing volume up/down will cause the lights to come on too.
I wonder if this is the cause of poor battery life. It's almost as if the light sensor is still functioning when the phone is supposed to be sleeping.
I noticed this also on both mine and my girls 0002 models... You can see it during the day too if you cup your hands around the bottom of the screen just over the buttons and look under. Wasn't sure what that was all about. Looks like just another glitch to me.
Is this good enough reason to request exchange? Does this drain battery faster in any way?

I thought the whole time that the "glow in the dark" was a feature. Its something I certainly don't mind, as I have found it rather useful.
But since its not a feature... then... defect? Haha. Well, this EVO is going back to the store anyway.
My Indian Friend gave me this phone No power,
It has response on Power supply when i trigger the Power Switch button, so i thought
there is something wrong with the boot or program.
My Jtag tools (medusa, riff, ort, etc) are no use since when i search the net and read about S3 jtag, i read this thing is not
open on s3 and all my tools doesnt support this phone yet. So i decided to do the Sdcard tricks on reviving Dead phones.
I always have Failed to copy error. I read E.V.A'S contribution post related to S3. He gave me a lot of information about this phone.
After 2 days of software trouble shooting i Decided to check the phones mobo and check every part of it.
when i look in the microscope i found out that I'm not the first to repair this phone.
I decided to change the IC (the tampered one). The IC with the red mark.
But it doesnt help.

I dont know what this location jumper means
but out of curiousity I just try to remove it.
This phone has a bypass on EU location. I leave the 3 Location open.
When i inserted the battery
IT TURN ON!
hahaha
I know those location are not related with the power )
Its just happen or its my lucky day
I just want to tell a story about my experience on Bricked SIII
This is not a first time I recieved Dead S3
But most of them were not related to Software Issue so it can be easily fix.
What is the purpose of that 3 location jumper?
I did try to install different location, different language it doesnt affect the phones functionality.
I know samsung wont put it on the board without purpose but what is the purpose of that thing?

You probably need to post screenshots of your device info page and firmware versions. One though is was this plug and play? or did you have to wire it? If you had to wire it perhaps the one of the power wires is not connected and the device can't keep power to the unit when you turn the car off. These things need access to power to fast boot. Mine has a setting to keep the unit on for a while after shutting car off, but that's not the fastboot option, on mine fast boot is just built in, no settings(that I've seen), which is why it may be hardware or wiring.

Right and for the most part for most units I would agree with them, but are they saying your unit is designed to cold boot when car is turned off/on?
I'm not sure what they're trying to say I know I've been asking them since May of 2020 about it lol and nothing , I just know like 3-4 of my old androids I had the sleep option ,car settings the extra settings all them other features this one I bought it cause it said it had split screen but only one app opens the split screen which is igo but it closes as soon as I press split screen option and this one also has hdmi put in the back besides it being a 10" because I bought a SUV but it's not working like I want it to , I been thinking of changing like software/mcu I think it is idk . do you think that would be a good option to do ?
I can't speak for what custom firmware options you have, but I can tell you I have no sleep options either, what I have is a single option how long to leave unit active after accessory power is off, but no options for how long to sleep before hard power off. As I understand it most units won't hard power off for several days. I've only seen mine hard boot once when I wasn't pushing the reboot button.
