SGS2 glass screen crack - Galaxy S II General

Well after dropping my SGS2 five times on hard floor from waist height, I wasn't so lucky the 6th time. Now my glass has a big crack. Luckily I think its just the glass on top as it hasn't affected the display in any way. The touchscreen is working normally and colors are fine too. It isn't very visible when in use with bright colors and from straight angle with normal distance (pics closeup and side angle).
So is this covered under warranty? If not what would be the expected cost and where can I do it?

Mine's in for repair now because of a few nasty scratches on the glass. Unfortunately, the fact that the screen is intact doesn't lower the cost of the repair. The glass is attached firmly to the screen and both are replaced at ones.. I highly doubt that it's covered by the warranty since it's caused by "abuse" and not during production.
I'm using an insurance for this, otherwise the cheapest option would be ordering the display online and doing the swap yourself. I'd contact my local Samsung support for more details on where to repair. And here's a thread on the subject: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1253969
Also.. You definitely need a non slippery case since you tend to drop it so often.

Five times that would be classed as suicide .
Damage is not covered by warranty Insurance maybe if you have any .
jje

Yep, no warranty will cover drop damage. I've dropped mine twice in less than a month, putting some big scratch on the plastic the 2nd time, before I smartened up and bought rubber case and screen protector.
The stock shell is damn slippery I'll give you that.

you're not using any case. buy a non-slip case after you get your s2 repaired

Not meaning to rub it in....but I cannot fathom how anyone can drop the phone 6 times, from waist height, within the last 3-4 months? You must hate your phone alot...

My screen cracked before and I sent it back to be repaired. Though I never dropped it. Just took it out of my pocket and noticed the damage. I never bumped into anything either. When asking to get it repaired I stated that on the notes section and said it was a defective screen. It was repaired without any charges.

daaamn man

it really sucks but you droped it 5 times man ,

Gorilla glass- good stuff?

So, any thoughts about gorilla glass? Today my 2week old dvp shattered. Yes, I dropped it. But, I've dropped phones before with no damage .
I ordered s new one while I fight to get a replacement. Low expectations on that. However I'm thinking my expectations on gorilla glass may have been too high.
Anyone with s more correct expectation level willing to reset mine?

technically your gorilla glass didnt shatter you had a bad drop and the glass layer under the gorrila broke. trust me ive taken a hammer to the top layer and nothing. if you drop the phone with the screen facing down then your ok. but drop it on the sides or the back and you can get the layers under the gorilla to break

no, it shattered. Top, bottom, and every layer in between. I cut myself on the pieces falling off. I do have a pic I'll share later. I thought it landed face down...loohed like it. But the break pattern indicated more towards the edge. Funny thing though, I was also holding my hd2 at the same time..both dropped togethr. One on top of the other. Both broke, indicating the drop was similar to what you day.
The Dell shattered completely, inner and putter layers. Only a tiny part of the screen is alive. The hd2 has cracks, but is usable.

I dropped the phone glass first on a pavement, it had a screen protector. Though the screen didn't break nor are there any scratches but it did get a pin point dent on the glass
I guess if they are not sure about the amount of RAM they put in this phone who is to say if this is a real gorilla glass.
Just curious, the hammer thing you did, was it on a DVP?
I read an article somewhere that said that gorilla glass is only strongest when it is at the center and it is not as good at the edges.
I've seen all Gorilla Glass demo's done hitting it in the middle. I've seen just about every single break happen because of edge damage.
This should be addressed IMO.
My DVP has scratches all over the screen...Scratch resistent my butt..
Good thing I'm getting my replacement today
i keep my DVP in my pocket all the time and the glass doesn't have a single scratch.

personally i got one scratch from keeping it in my pocket and several scratches from this one time where i dropped it
and engadget had several scratches on the venue
so some people get lucky and some dont as far as gorrilla glass goes
I had the displeasure of owning the DVP and thought the glass was atrocious. The curved design made it hard to scroll smoothly. And godforbid you try and wipe away smudge prints and dirt - this was a task in itself. However, I dropped it face first from 1 and half feet and not one scratch.
I abuse my phones and the best to take my abuse was my Dash 3G. The DVP is comparable. Only 2 light scratches and i got my phone a week before christmas and did i mention i abuse my phones. They are kept in my pocket with keys and such. Even the chrome trim has held up nice. As for the curved glass i like it.. Very tactile, and easy to use. maybe its my big hands but I like it, even the keys are spaced well and robust. Again, i have huge hands and the on screen keyboard doesnt work for me, but the portrait works well.
I've dropped mine a few times, not a scratch. Just yesterday, my car holster decided to let go of the dashboard, causing the DVP (with a little extra weight attached) to faceplant into my shifter pretty hard. No problems there either.
got my phone a few days ago, dropped it my first time today and the glass shattered
what can I do? I am very disappointed in myself....
I cannot find any replacement parts, I cannot find any repair shops for it... should I sell it as is, or call dell? IDK what to do... it still works fine just has a very ugly screen

a cracked screen is considered out of warranty (I think it also includes any physical damage as well...not sure about that part though)
Well no one ever said Gorilla Glass wasn't glass... It is tougher than normal glass against scratches, but it isn't scratch proof nor is it shatter proof.
Remember it is still glass and that means it will break under the right conditions.

Screen chipped after 6 days of ownership!

As per the title.
I wouldn't mind, but I haven't been abusing the phone in any way. It has not been dropped, bumped in to or had anything placed or dropped on the screen. It has always been placed in a pouch after use and there is nothing inside the pouch that could scratch or chip it. But there it is, 1cm below the 'S' in Samsung - a 1mm diameter chip on the screen. It wasn't there yesterday, but it's there today.
I phoned Orange and told them, expecting to be told to take a running jump, but they are delivering a replacement handset to me tomorrow, so that is one bit of good news for me. A screen protector will then be applied ASAP!
Is this screen, purportedly made from Gorilla Glass, generally just ridiculously easy to chip and/or scratch? Or have I just been very unlucky? Or is Gorilla Glass just generally **** (which is the conclusion I am being drawn to after hearing plenty of scare stories regarding the latest HTC phones, and seeing a colleagues Desire S which is absolutely chipped and scratched to buggery)?
It's strange, but I've come from a HTC Desire after 18 months with no screen protector having ever been applied and being kept in a similar pouch to my GS2, and there isn't a mark on the screen...
Bizzare, i have mine a good few months now and have dropped it twice and it's fine, granted i have a case and a screen protector but i was hammered drunk the weekend and took my phone out of my pocket to answer a call in a crowded bar and someone barged by and the phone went out of my hand onto the floor face down, cue me picked it up and not a scratch on it so i have no idea what happened to yours mate for a phone so slim it's amazing, one only has to look at this video.
That can only be unlucky, I dropped mine down a flight of stairs in a pub and watched as it went like a £400 slinky with only a £3 ebay case to protect it and it was fine. The screen is pretty tough.
I've beat mind to death since release and nothing noticeable.

Sounds like a manufacturing defect in the glass more than anything else.
Its probably a good idea to use screen protectors and some form of a case to anyone else reading this that hasn't bottom one yet.
I'm not trying to be the "I told you so guy" (I hate people like that) but I was in the same situation as OP myself using a different phone, and I'd like to save someone else from suffering the same fate...

I'm inclined to agree. The phone certainly hasn't been mistreated in any way, so I can't think of any other reason for it to appear.
Dropped my phone yesterday onto solid flooring tiles at work and it just bounced a few times and not an issue.
It's a plus of the plastic used IMO. Yes it feels tacky but it's damn strong and absorbs force extremely well. Weight also helps.
I had my Galaxy Ace get a scratch in the top-left corner about .8cm long. Sure, Gorilla Glass seems more resistant to minor scratches you get from being in a pocket, but it's by no means invincible.
I scratched my screen on the 2nd day of having it just by it being in my jean pocket on its own. Since that I always put it in a soft case if I'm wearing jeans, but still managed to get another one in roughly the same place... I had my Desire for about 16 months and dropped it many times and no scratches on the screen lol typical. Can only see the scratches if I look for them though so not too bad.
defected glass is the biggest possibility. My GS2 unknownly got out of my pocket when I was sitting, but no scratch at all
Gorilla glass should have a somewhat higher surface hardness, that's all. Nothing magical about it, except the hype.
And increasing surface hardness usually makes a material more brittle, meaning it chips and cracks more easily (and dramatically).
You can't have it all...

Whether or not a gorilla glass, i always prefer to apply an invisible shield by zagg, as soon as i take out the phone off its box. I have seen the result and its tremendous.
One phone had shattered glass but because invisible shield was applied, touch screen was still usable and one phone fell off from about 10 feet hight and nothing happened to it as because of the same.
Just my two cents.
Cheers
my phones bn gud past 3 months.. i think u r "careless" bro
I also chipped my screen.. I had a bottle opener on my car keys and forgot which pocket 2 put them in. So they can get scratched quite easily although the chip is tiny. I think a pocket pouch would probably have prevented this. I love the slipperyness of the screen and will never cover it.

i actually have had the same thing happen to mine.mine cracked above the ear piece to the out side edge where the glass is at its thinnest point.i have a case and it hasnt been dropped.almost as if it was point loaded from underside of glass.pissed me off as i imported my phone on release.just learnt to live with it

my N4 weent face first on an automotive shop floor

It didnt shatter oddly enough, but scratches on the side, do they have replacement glass yet for it ready?
I was under the impression that the screen is glued to the glass now so you can't just simply take the glass off and replace it - you have to send it in and pay a fair bit for repair since the whole display has to be replaced..
That sucks im pissed they dont have a hard otter box type case yet,

[Q] Gorilla Glass 3

What have been your experiences with Gorilla Glass 3? The unit on mine cracked with a minor drop, although given it was a drop suffered directly to the face. But a two week phone already cracked. I had better experiences with Gorilla Glass 2 on my galaxy s2
How do car windshields sometimes just chip and sometimes crack all the way across, with a similar sized hit from a rock?
I wouldn't blame your glass, just luck of the draw.
Plus isn't GG supposed to be scratch resistent(not that it totally is) moreso than impact resistent?

Consider yourself lucky if you ONLY cracked the glass. A number of us, including myself, have had experiences where the OLED broke off a "minor drop". In all honesty, you were unlucky AND lucky. If the phone still operates and you can look past the obvious cosmetic blemish (or scar, however you'd like to see it), then ride it out until the price of Gorilla 3 glass comes down. At least you may still have something that operates. Better that then seeing your phone go completely black.
One more note: can you show us where the phone landed on? I'm willing to bet 100 internets that it landed on the sides or corners. A large number of people here have had face down drops and come up clean (as in flat impact on flat surface.)
That sucks bro, I work a pretty labor intensive construction job and I keep my phone in an otterbox with the provided otterbox screen protector. I have dropped my s4 from roof to basement (roughly a 30 foot drop) and my phone is still unscathed. Same with the s3 I had for about a year and a bit. Probably dropped it 200 times, never had a problem. Just lucky I guess.
i guess it really depends how the phone drops, my friend also work in construction, he dropped his S3 from the 3rd step of a ladder last years and it shattered, his S4 fell from the top of a similar ladder and had a very slight chip on the plastic strip around the phone but no screen damage. Corner shots can be especially deadly
You guys need to quit playing around with your phones while at work. That's the problem - your punishment for goofing off.

No but i do agree. If you're careless, or accidentally drop the phone, you should be responsible for your acts, i have dropped my phone a few times before, thankfully, nothing ever happened, but if one day it does, the only person i'll blame is myself, not the construction of the phone, and definitely not gorilla glass 3. It's a phone, not a tank. Nothing is ever specified in any documentation that the phone is supposed to resist any drop.

Samsung's flexible display is awesome.
My experiences were good for the first 30 hours of my phone ownership, although I guess I can't be too upset at a thin piece of glass shattering upon contact with concrete.
Is there any clear cut way to tell the difference between a broken digitizer and just a broken glass? I can touch anywhere on the screen and it works fine, until I get a shard of Gorilla Glass in my thumb... I could always just shell out $220 for a whole new assembly, but I'd really rather not considering I spent a good amount of my check last week getting the phone.
ouch, you should be more careful.
The glass and digitizer are built together. You will need to buy them both built together. Disassembling the phone isn't too difficult though if you are good with fixing things you might be able to install it yourself.

When the digitizer is broken the touch capabilities don't work. It rarely breaks as its a piece of material more than anything

I dropped mine when getting out of the backseat of an SUV. I had the phone in my lap, forgot it was there, slid out and heard a loud SMACK on the rocky asphalt. I looked below and saw my phone laying screen down upon the dirty, New York stone parking lot. I reluctantly bent down and sighed, resigning myself to a $650 charge on my credit card next time I hit up an AT&T store. I picked it up to inspect the damage and...
Nothing. It was perfect as the day I took it out of the box. <3 GG3
Dropped it On a tile floor, bounced around, and very minimal damage.. Dropped from my hand without a case so 4-5 foot drop. The chrome dented where it dropped and the glass sorta cracked/chipped a layer.. There are no breaks, just a small area of damage.. Was quite scared that more damage would be inflicted based on some of the criticisms going around about the poor build

If the material is soft enough to be flexible I doubt how scratch-resistant it is going to be, and would a screen protector even stay on? I predict people whining about scratches.

Does the digitizer break with the glass?

Hi all,
Prospective 6P owner here. I've a question for those of you that have broken the glass on your 6P.
Regrettably, I've ended up dropping and breaking the last two types of phones I've owned—OnePlus One followed by Moto X Pure. Even more regrettably, both of their displays were designed such that the digitizer breaks with the glass, so broken phone = no more touch input. I think may head my explode if I continue blundering my way around my phone with volume switch control and google now, so I am motivated to purchase a phone that still works when the glass is broken.
Does the 6P fit the bill?
Thanks—
No. When my glass cracked the display wouldn't even turn on. Might be different for others as it wasn't the smallest of impacts
It all depends on impact? Watch youtube drop test video of 6p against iphone, 6p gets smashed touchscreen still works, but it can go either way. I think its the same with all modern smartphones due to the way they are built. If you keep braking your screens just buy a case and tempered glass protector...
It depends on the degree & point of impact
I've dropped the phone several times and only had a cracked screen once. Everytime I dropped it there was a Tempered Glass on it and the Tempered Glass cracked.
The one time I cracked the screen, the phone fell down screen first while I was taking it out of my pocket. So about a 3.5ft drop. This time the point of impact was on the edge of the lower speaker grill. The phone fell on the road with a bit of gravel. I reckon it was a piece of gravel that had the direct impact on the screen. The touchscreen was working perfectly & I used it for a couple of days before I gave it for repairs.
In any case, the service center replaces the entire display panel, even if the screen is working properly.
I'd recommend investing in an insurance. In India, insurance costs INR 3,000 (approx $45) & the screen replacement costs INR 14,380 (approx $212).
All the best!
