when some app using the camera crashes the driver doesnt seems to be reset and you need to restart
maybe you have some photo app crashing (or camera/video conference/etc)

Here's a video I made of my SGS2's camera problem. I'm curious if the problems you're experiencing are similar to what I've recorded below.

maybe it's hardware problem

It sucks but i think you might have a hardware problem

Just as the thread title says, my camera is full of bugs, unable to change iso/exposure properly and hangs when I try to focus or take a picture. Had the same problem when using jf4 and jm2 as well as third party camera apps. Is this a software or hardware problem? And any solutions?

I had problems testing the panorama shot, but I never complained, mostly because I don't take pictures and I was just testing it. Also, in the camera's defense, I was talking pictures in a room, where perhaps there was an issue due to corners while the shot is intended to be of landscape....any thoughts?
Not exactly complaining but I think that it could be a hardware problem as half of the time I press the camera app, the app starts shows a black screen and says 'camera failed' and force closes...

Is this lag ?
Not much lag, but like I said its real buggy, can't even focus.when I tap on an area the box shifts to wheretapped but it does not focus, the box will now get stuck there and the iso/exposure will not change then usually the camera will stop working

now, that is an actual problem.
did you try rebooting the phone?
if you can't take even a normal picture, you might have an defective camera
Taking a picture is a hit and miss affair, takes pics 2 out of 10 times i try, it should be a camera problem, going to send it in for warranty now. will report back when its fixed
Have you tried a hard reset to see if the problem goes away?
Whenever things start to go wierd, I alway 1)Soft reset 2)If it does not work do a hard reset 3)If still doesn't work, find out if everyone else with the same firmware has the problem 4) Finally, go to the shop for a replacement, it's likely then to be a hardware issue.
If you have 'fring' installed uninstall it and camera will stop failing
Just updated to JM2, I have fring installed, never had such problem even with stock...
Sorry my bad, fring was recently fixed for sgs

Soft reset, hard reset, flashed firmware again. All did not work. Was sent in for repair a few hours ago, they said it would take 2-3 days, had jm2 on it though and where I live the latest firmware is jf4. Hope they don't bother about that. Hoping for the best
Update!
Just got phone back from Samsung after waiting for 4 torturous days, everything seems to be in working order now, the auto focus is still pretty slow though but other than that its great.
So after all it should have just been a hardware problem as the customer service lady told me that they changed the pcb of the camera

HELP PLEASE.... I bought a new Galaxy S Captivate about 3 weeks ago and i think alrealy had the new Android 2.1 with the GPS Fixed. The Camera was working until a few days ago. Every time I start the Camera app, after just 2 or 3 seconds I am getting the Warning message "Camera Failed". I can only press okay and the Camera app closes. I tried many times and it is always the same.
I tried soft reset, and hard reset which errased all my data, and nothing. Today I decided to upgrade to the new Leaked version of the Froyo 2.2 to see if it would help. Nothing helped. I AM STUCK....
I called Samsung 3rd level support and they said that I should send my phone to them for them to REFLASH my phone. If that would not fix they would replace and send another phone to me.
My problem is that I am out of the USA (I am in Brazil now) for the next 3 months, so I would like to find a way to fi via software now.
Since Samsung said that the best way to fix this Camera problem is the FLASH the phone, and only SAMSUNG has this special flashing software, my question is:
1- DOES ANY ONE KNOWS WHER I COULD DOWNLOAD THIS SAMSUNG FLASHING SOFTWARE ? ANY WHAT WHERE I COULD GET THE ROM ORIGINAL CAPTIVATE 2.1 VERSION?
2- I only know this 2 ways to flash or upgrade my phone,
I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.rar (for Android 2.1)
I897UCJI6-OCD-REV02-Low-designgears.exe (for Android 2.2 leaked version)
But I am not sure that this is the SAMSUNG FLASH version that they are talking about , is it?
Where can I find the real Samsung Flash software ? PLEASE HELP
Solved Thanks to Voodoo
Had practically the same problem, Camera failed yet it worked for Video and even in Panorama mode, I didn't install anything new other than some themes from the Market, I tried factory set, removing the battery ... nothing worked, so I disabled OCLF, uninstalled it, and installed Voodoo lag fix instead, that made the trick !! Don't understand why though , but anyways it's working now

the camera is definitely broken. I'm running kernel 2.6.32.9, twingerbread 3.3 on sgh-i897; and the video option is no-fugu. force-close EVERY time I try to use it.
When i try to camera it says "camera failed".Soft reset, hard reset, flashed firmware again. All did not work
After upgrading to ICS, the build in Camera App has problems and also the QRC-Reader App even shows a error.
In Google Googles and Camera FX, the Camera works perfect.
Does anybody experience the same issues.

Nope, all working perfectly here. I tested video, still, and panorama with the front and rear cameras, including all options (white balance, face effects, etc.), as well as panorama with the rear camera (it can't be used with the front one), and scanning a dozen different 2D and 3D barcodes with the ZXing app and rear camera as well.
Not a single error or crash on a stock US-market just-wiped TF101. Well, other than that the camera quality sucks, but that's a hardware issue.
every camera app including the stock one work perfectly.
Mine also works perfectly now... fornt and rear...
But one question though: in the stock camera app, what's the button in the lower right corner for? my camera app freezes when I click on it...
Hi,
Also for me not working camera; I try more applications, none of them working.
This is very strange: I have between the applications that are included in ROM also "Superuser". This suppose to came with ICS?
My TF was rooted previously, but when I did upgrade to latest version of HC (8_6_5_21), I did lost the root.
So this application was installed in my TF before the upgrade to ICS; but now I cannot uninstall: seems that is included in ROM.
The error I receive when I try camera is : "Can't connect to the camera".
I believe that something went wrong in my upgrade. I did also factory reset after upgrade to ICS, no change.
Now I hope some update from asus will help me.

camera not working
My camera is not working as well, done people have started their cameras up while holding their finger in front of it to activated their auto focus, and have had success. Just place your finger in front of the camera for 5 seconds then remove it. No success for me, but you can tell it's doing something different when you do that
Same problem here "Can't connect to camera". This error comes up for front facing camera but the back camera works perfectly. Thing is this error came up when I installed the prime rom.
PS. The front facing camera was working when I bought the tab.

Ah, the front sensor strikes again...
That's almost like my own experience with the front camera: worked like a charm on Honeycomb, since 9.2.1.17 it goes berserk in low-light conditions until the unit is rebooted (but instead of an error message the Camera application showed a garbled image with previous contents of the framebuffer).
IIRC, the first batch of logs I sent to Asus North America was related to this problem
Are you guys stock and unrooted? If not give it a shot just to see.
So I bought a used Galaxy Note 3 and am having a massive issue with the camera.
I've rooted this device and have tried every rom in the book
Everything else works 100% however when I try to start the camera app:
1) The camera UI displays but the viewfinder is black.
2) The controls either don't respond at all, or the controls just light up and do nothing.
Any ideas how to remedy this?

well you don't say which model you have for a start?
have you flashed back to stock to see if it has probs still?
I have the N900W8 model.
I've restored it to stock 4.4.2 and still nothing.
When I use *#0*# and try the camera tests they both just crash the device.

then essentially it should have propper camera drivers.
I suppose it's knox is tripped?
Should not really matter legally in europe if still in warranty period.
did it just suddenly stop?
does it take pictures?
I bought this second hand.
That being said since I've had it, the camera hasn't worked.

Yep I've tried several.
I should note after restoring 4.4.2 Knox is at 0x0
So managed to get the camera working by taking the phone apart and reseating the camera module.
Now my issue is the camera won't focus properly... lol!
sounds like a hardware issue then ?
Seems that way.
Looks like it is a software issue.
Moved the camera module from my Note 3 into another note 3 and works just fine.
Has something to do with software or the board.
Might help you pin down the cause, or not:
Mine does this after I use a flashlight app for a while (i.e. 2-3 hours.) At some point, the flash LED turns off and won't light up again until I reboot the phone. At this point, all the camera apps (I have 6) do exactly what you experience.
Maybe try a flashlight app, turn it on, off and then try the camera?
Hi,
Sometimes while taking a pic the stock camera would hang without even saving the pic to album. This generally happens when i open the camera from lockscreen. Another common error is "camera not available".
On encountering this , most ppl restart the phone. However, i have seen on all occasions, opening the multitasking pane and swiping the camera app away will fix this (atleast temporarily)
Hope this helps and u dont miss ur shots [emoji4]

I've noticed one thing - when I launch camera from lock screen and it freezes when I half-press camera button to focus, all you have to do is touch the icon with cameras (the one that allows you to switch to automatic/panorama/etc) and select Auto again. Camera works then with no issues.

..and the fix in the link
I installed 120fps e 4k mod too
I had the problem of the camera hang before to apply the fix
well unfortunately this fix did not work.
i have a xperia z1 c6906 LB.
i tested with ihackers ROM v5.1 the first day i was able to take like 300 pictures without any failure, next day after taking the 12th picture i get camera hang somehow i change between auto and manual and 'fix' for a moment so i decide reboot the cellphone, second day i take about 100 pictures only hang 2 times in auto. today i keep testing and when i taking the second pictures got camera hang u.u i tried to do the same trick changing from auto to manual but it only got worst i lost preview (black screen) from camera. :c.. i make a quick reboot but did not fix the camera preview so i did a full reboot and its working again...
i think i gonna get back to android 4.3 :/
it is really disappointed because both versions android 4.4.4 and 4.3 have bugs
maye its time to change phone and brand
remember, the reboot is required after you have installed the fix
The fix works fine for me. Thanks.
Guys I'll be now testing for a few days since I have this problem too.. I'm on UB, I have chocolatetrain mod installed (pretty nice but this issue hasn't been solved there too..), trinity kernel (dunno if that mathers hahah). I'll tell you more
Edit - ok totally not working here.. Camera still has its annoying problem
Thanx for ur excellent suggestions bros..but my phone is on stock rom and unrooted.....guess thrs nothing i can do abt it for completely getting rid of it

Hi all,
I wondered if anyone is having the same issue as me. The camera app occasionally crashes but it's consistent when I switch to video mode from photo, then from 120FPS to 240FPS. I've found 9/10 the Camera app crashes and closes down. The error message is "Camera Error: can't connect to the camera".
When you re-launch the camera, it just shows a blank screen with a white camera icon and does nothing. The only way to fix it is by rebooting the phone. I've tried a couple of things, removed any other camera apps on the phone and cleared the data / cache from the camera app under installed applications. I'm trying to avoid a factory reset if I'm honest...but I'll do that as a final troubleshooting step, if it still happens I'll get it sent away as a hardware problem.
Feels more like a software issue to me, anyone else? My phone is UK branded 64GB model in Silver.
Thanks,
Danny
