AOSP Battery Life Overrated - EVO 4G General

Ever since I got my evo I was a long time sense user. I just the visual appeal of it. Due to barley making it through the work day I decided to try aosp (cm7). I run the latest Tiamat kernel along with it and I go between smartass and powersave. My battery is only a month old.
On my sense rom (MikG or Synergy with defauly kernel) I keep 100% brightness, no 4g, no wifi, no bluetooth, gps on. I sync Facebook and twitter once an hour. I use friend stream, twitter and facebook widgets, plus the sense weather clock and the weather lockscreen.
On my Cm7 I keep between 25-75% brightness, no 4g, wifi, bluetooth, or gps. Facebook and Twitter every 2 hours. I use LPP launcher with the built in twitter/facebook widgets. minimal text clock widget. widget locker lockscreen with a beautiful widgets 4x1 weather widget.
My useage is the same so no need to try to list that. Anyway After going about a week I barley notice and difference in battery life. People who talk about 2-3 day battery life I'm convinced the only way to get this done is serverly underclock/undervolt your device and barley even turn the screen on. If thats the case why don't you just use a flip phone?
I'm just disappoint and really feel aosp is overrated. Performance wise I don't notice a difference between cm7 and a sense 2.0 rom.

So you try AOSP for one week, with one kernel, and then post a thread about how much it sucks? Try some different kernels, or a different ROM or something, then come back. Jumped the gun a bit on this one, don't ya think? Everyone doesn't say they get way better battery life with AOSP for no reason.

To each their own. I ran a few AOSP ROMs with different kernels and I was unimpressed with the performance and the battery life. The battery life was better than stock, but when I had my Moment i could get almost 3 days on a charge with AOSP.
On my Evo, the AOSP gave me slightly better battery than stock, and that was running an SBC Kernel, underclocked, with Viper's Script. I am running a Beta Sense ROM (Mik3D) with an undervolted, OCd kernel (Freedom Aggressive 8.5 set to 1152mhz w/ interactivex) with V6 Supercharger, and I get almost twice the battery life I got stock and it looks better than AOSP. And it is smoother to boot!

Im running salvaged stock and my battery is ok. But when I use evolution deck modded with: vipermod, tiamat kernel and underclocked to 537 with piwersave option. My battery life works all day

Someting interesting I found about CM6 ROM...

Not sure if this is the culprit of my battery drain even if I used setCPU (with screen off profile) and/or UltimateJuice, I still get somewhat not too good battery life on CM6. So today just surfing the net and found GDE a new home screen which pretty slick, and decided to try it out. So after running GDE for a while, my batter seems to be better for some reason.
So my thought would be that ADW launcher is the culprit because after GDE, I don't use ADW anymore and when I was with ADW, batter seems bad.
Anyone can confirm this?

I'd like to see the answer to this.
Although if you'd like a TRUE battery saving ROM, try Fresh's 3.2.0.0 (donators only) that is based off the HTC's latest 3.28.651.1 build along with a MUCH IMPROVED HTC kernel (BIG DIFERENCE ON BATTERY LIFE, AND MORE STABILIZED with Youtube, video recording, etc)
So as of now I'd prefer using Fresh when it comes to battery life (using ADW launcher), but when it comes to toying around...I like CM6 simply because it is SENSE-LESS.
I am getting horrid battery life on CM6 as well, seems my wifi isn't letting the phone sleep.
Had to switch to another ROM, but I really don't want to use sense...so I hope I can figure this out. After testing out a different ROM with ADW installed, I'll reload cyanogen and replace ADW with Zeam or something.
well there are ways you could test this out more. you could run a true battery test something like running a movie from 100% till it shuts down with adw and then with GDE and compare etc. I think it is a big leap to switch homes and then say adw was the cause of your battery drain without any actual test or data.
I have gotten amazing battery life using ADW and i have gotten horrible life depending on what i have running my use etc.
for those that dont want to use sense you can remove sense from your phone for the most part. while it isnt asop you dont have to use/have sense running if you remove a few apks or in Damage Control its as s imple as selecting to ban sense and rebooting

Sometimes 2.1 ROM's are just better

Hey guys,
I wanted to share this with the forum. I have tried every ROM on this site. in fact, I am self diagnosed with EFS (Excessive Flashing Syndrome). In my travels I landed on Froyo because I really like AOSP and cm6 is cool.
However issues with the nightlies forced me to try a 2.1 sense ROM again for some much missed stability. So I went back to my "old reliable" which is Aloysius 2.1. Since I have gotten used to no sense I just downloaded Launcher Pro from the market, pushed the aosp email client, dialer, and news widgets to the ROM and loaded the HTC Anykernel stock setting kernel and poof. I am running smooth as ever, fast as ever, and no issues with MMS, trying to find a signal fix, or VVM problems, etc etc etc. It just works. No worrying with google apps or flashing a million kernels, battery tweaks or anything.
Here is the best part. I ramped it up to 729mhz with set cpu and enabled JIT (yes, it's in there) and got 5.2 MFLOPS and 450 quadrant scores. It runs really fast. I scale it back to 710 for everyday use and as of now I am at 8 hours 30 minutes use and still have 77% battery left. That is moderate use including 10 phone calls, countless emails, about 20 text messages, and I have been connected to wi-fi for over half of those 8 hours! I dare say it is the best running, most stable ROM for the Hero.
Please no flaming, I still love CM6 and am not saying it is bad or anything. Just that if you want a ROM with lots of color, unmatched stability, ridiculous battery life, and all the speed you need, you may want to check it out.
Thanks to Konikub for making it!
Sounds nice man, mind sending me a zip? My average run time is 9hours till dead battery.

Just search this forum for aloysius and you'll find it.

Is this rom being supported anymore?
Mac
I'm getting equal if not better performance with NFX-Rom. I used to have Aloysius' rom.. it gave me many issues... I'm also running JIT without any issues as well.
To each his own... that's the great thing about Android - it's truly customizable to meet your needs.
do we not get pinch zooming with 2.2 and do we also lose the ability to type in a name into the dialer?
are the apps to fix these missing features.
how about calendar searching, without these items 2.2 might prove to be worthless to me. glad everyone else likes it.
Thanks
Just FYI, I switched back to the 2.2 RC1. I am actually getting the same battery life this time round. The deciding factor was the fact that the developer of aloysius has moved on to Evo and isn't supporting that ROM anymore. My attempts to reach him were unsuccessful so I'll stick with this great ROM on AOSP. I'm such an idiot.

idle time... i was doing approx 40 hours under light/moderate use and about 20 on heavy usage

Top 3 reasons you Rom/Theme works for you

Is it battery Life? styling? quickness? all three maybe? Im using mikfroyo 4.4. pretty quick. Would love to use the Hulu thats installed, wont let me tho.. thats the only negative.
I like trying to maximize my battery life, so I've been on Calkulin's EViO 2 for the past week. Performance is still adequate and battery life is amazing. Lots of fun knobs to twist with his battery scripts.

MIUI
1 Having the highest scores tested.
2. Getting 24 hrs of battery life
3. The amazing features brought to you by the amazing and nicest development team in the game.
Sending from my EVO running MIUI with SBC...not for the faint of heart
I've been running MIUI for about a week now.
1. Consistently getting over 20 hours of battery life.
2. Stability. No FCs or crashes or reboots since its been running..
3. Quadrant and linpack scores aside, my phone has never run faster or smoother.
I recommend everyone giving this ROM a try.

How many hours of heavy use you get out of MIUI? I've tried it and its cool, but you have to give up some nice sense hacks (like roaming verizon at 3g speeds)
Sent from my grubby hand
I am currently running VaelPak 3.0, and here are some of the reasons why:
1. No sense to lag the phone, but keeps some of the sense features.
2. Fast performance.
3. Great battery life so far.
This is only my second ROM, so I am still trying to figure out my best options. I will more than likely switch over to Cyanogen once it the 4G release becomes more stable.
I'm currenly running Sprint Lover. But i flash everyday....
1) I like to have the option to change around
2) Fast performance
3) and of course the battery life.
1. 4G (will switch to cyanogen/MIUI once 4G works)
2. Wireless tether
3. Battery life, performance, looks
Right now, I'm using Warm TwoPointTwo RLS5 with GO Launcher.
1. 4G. I get 4G at school and in one of my classes, I use it with EasyTether since school WiFi doesn't reach that one classroom.
That's about it. I'd probably switch to MIUI when 4G works since I'm super-happy with GO Launcher.
Using Mik-froyo v4.5 beta V.
Love the quickness
Layout of the theme (Chogardjr's Blue theme)
battery life (net's 4.3.2 bfs-sbc-havs-more) avg 16-18 hrs with moderate to light work.
CM7 nightlies
ADW EX with Ubuntu Theme.
1. looks sexy - unbuntu theme is hawt
2. performs sexy - quick and smooth
3. battery life - astounding if i turn 3g off when i'm not using it...on average I net 30-35 hours of battery life
Using my own custom ROM.
1. As stable as ever.
2. All hardware on my phone works as advertised.
3. Not sacrificing anything to achieve great battery life and a fast beautiful looking ROM.

what version of miui are you using?
how is the battery compared to cm?
MIUI with the Black'ups Darkness theme
It is easily the best looking ROM I have tried
It is easily the best performing ROM that I have tried
It is easily the most unique ROM I have tried
It is easily the most stable ROM I have tried
It has the best battery life (24hrs+)
It has the best dev team
It is updated weekly with new and more badass features added all the time

MIUI version #0.1.21
Coming from CM 6, the battery life on MIUI is much better based on my usage. When on CM, id have to charge my battery as soon as I got home from work. I highly recommend giving it a try.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I use Cyanogenmod, because:
1) It's Open-Source, and I support Open-Source software,
2) It's rock-solid stable;
3) It's fast as hell.
Stock MikFroyo (stock as in no themes)
Netarchy 4.3.1 Havs, CFS, no-sbc (gonna update to 4.3.2 with sbc)
1. Fastest, most stable sense rom
2. I lose nothing (hdmi, 4g works)
3. Regular updates and releases
I also use Myn RLS5 with MS's SBC #15 v7
What I liked about that:
1. Beautiful rom, performed well.
2. Still didn't lose anything, hdmi and 4g worked
3. Regular updates, releases and when RLS5 was released, I got it a day or 2 early because I'm a regular in the IRC chat he frequents (super freaking cool).
I will eventually add Cyanogen and MIUI to my rotation when:
1. They get 4g and hdmi working. Well, at least 4g, the reason I bought the phone in the first place.
I have used CM in the passed for my MyTouch Slide and G2. What I liked about that:
1. Stable as all hell and very good performance.
2. Battery life far surpassed the stock rom from either phone.
3. Wider customization options from regular stock Android or Sense/Expresso
I have never used MIUI or any of the other roms here.
Three things I don't like about each:
Mikfroyo 4.4
1. Battery life is abysmal unless you add battery hacks, extended battery or an SBC kernel (I'm adding an sbc kernel to help). I can get 12 hours of usage out of it if I'm careful (no facebooking, twitter, browsing...just text, phone calls and my rss widget used) but I often find myself with it plugged into my car charger or computer before the end of the day in case I go somewhere and don't want it to die.
2. There isn't nearly as many themes for this as there is for Myn's Warm. The Slayer Cyan Dragon theme is awesome, but it's really heavy on the battery usage, which is already quite bad.
3. 4g cuts out sometimes. It almost always turns back on without a reboot, but it seems when I'm in motion in my car, it struggles to keep 4g despite signal being strong in my whole city.
Myn rls5
1. Isn't as quick as MikFroyo. It performs on par (if not a little better) than stock, but doesn't have quite the zippy, iPhone-level quickness of MikFroyo
2. The widgets are themed, the apps aren't. What's the point of having a sexy, dark messaging widget when the thing glows whiter than a hospital hallway when you open it?
3. A lot of the themes actually drag down the quality of the looks of the rom. You have to look hard and spend a lot of time to find a theme that actually improves on the original theme.
CM
1. No 4g or hdmi, enough said. To their credit, they are really working hard to get it and that's why they're the best.
2. The stock widgets on stock rom suck or don't exist. No messaging widget (just the iPhone style app that opens it), facebook widget doesn't work with any known theme. You sacrifice quite a bit for performance and the original taste of vanilla in terms of extras and features...but those of us who use vanilla don't care, do we fellas? Besides, there's always handcent
3. Couldn't think of a third one. I'm a big fan of CM, even without a good messaging widget/app.
Again, haven't used MIUI or the rest so I can't give an opinion.
Also, if you feel the need to quote me on any of these and give me crap, keep in mind they are just opinions All our devs here freaking rock and all their stuff is fantastic.

Best battery life rom

My girlfriends Evo battery life is horrible. She mainly just text a lot and surfs facebook. I need a rom to get her battery life to where she can make it at lease 8 hours before having to charge her phone.

Savage-Mod
I would get Savage mod 1.1 with savaged zen 1.1.0 cfs havs sbc. I've been using it for the past week and it has been great. The texting and phone it self is faster and smoother than any rom i've used and i've been through most. I am currently on 65%, its been unplugged for 8 and a half hours. I understand that others may have better battery live but i'm using my stock battery, which is great cause I saved money and didn't add any thickness. PM if you have any questions.
I'm on Myn's Warm Z with Netarchy 4.3.2 cfs, sbc, havs more. Even with heavy usage (including video streaming and web surfing) my battery lasts a good 10 hours. I can't recommend this combo enough. I had horrible battery life with the stock kernel on Warm Z. Only thing is, depending on her hardward build, you may have to test a couple different kernels.
Easy answer:
EViO 2, SetCPU to underclock to 921, remove sense and use ADW.
Long answer:
To really figure it out, you'll have to try a bunch of diff ROM/Kernel combos for a couple days each.
I would try with CM7, the ROM from "yet another AOSP ginger ROM," Salvage-Mod, Savaged-Zen(Mod) RC2, Miui and whatever sense ROMs you want.
Also, Juice Defender and Autostarts will help you.
I recommend CM7 with a Savaged-Zen ROM CFS- SBC. Even after flashing a new nightly, I avg. 13-14 hours the first day before the kernel is broken in. Best of all Roms that I've tried and I really use my phone (data & mp3). Forgot to mention, I use Setcpu with profiles.

Let's face it: women have a better sense of style than us dudes, and no chick in their right mind would put up with having a hideous cinderblock of a phone. 6mm might as well be an inch when it comes to stuffing a phone into her jeans. In the interest of keeping our women looking fine as hell, let's find software solutions to battery life
To the OP, try this first: go into settings/wireless and networks and uncheck enable always on mobile data. When I was on a stock Evo, this helped me immensely with battery life. Also, uninstall any task killers she has. Check what programs are syncing with the internet too, it's really just data use that eats up battery life with these phones.
Also, post up a screenshot of her battery use screen, maybe we can help figure out what the drain is Even a stock evo running the latest Sprint update should get around 10 hours, minimum, with moderate use like facebook and texting.

so you base your decision off the fact that your wife/girlfriend/friend will be holding your phone and will buldge out of her pocket...maybe YOU should be holding YOUR phone, but hey i guess im weird, my girl might hold my phone, but she doesnt stuff it in her pocket and walk around with it thats stupid, besides my girl puts everything in her pocketbook as most do, keeps the figure , at least thats what i tell her lol
I am running well with deck's rom (the "yet another gingerbread" rom), rc9 now, and the new savaged-zen kernel (1.1). The phone is running really well. I just tried the undervolting script and that made a few reboots, which never happened since I went aosp last month, so I removed that. battery life seems really good though. 1st run through on the latest kernel went from about 11pm last night until 6pm today with pretty good use. I expect as it settles in it should do well.
Juice defender should help immensely if all she does is text and fb

CM7 RC4 with Savage Zen 1.1.0 kernel, Seidio 3500mAh battery will give you DAYS of battery life if you use it moderately to little usage. With a stock battery you will still get over a day easily.
I have wifi on most of the day, live wallpaper (the smoke one), I DONT use any task killer (because it actually slows down my phone), Bluetooth is on and connected to my car whenever Im driving (at least 60 miles per day)
I believe that if I have to use airplane mode, turn off GPS, not use wifi, not use the phone to its full potential then I rather have a cheaper phone and get a laptop...
The screen shots below were made with STOCK battery because I wanted to know the real difference in battery life between the roms!
Note the usage... I listen to music, voice calls...
here is another comparisson...
I really hope this helps you find what you are looking for
Actually, lies, those screen shots were made with gginggerbread 6(which is based on CM7) with savage zen 0.2.something...
The following screen shots were made with the specs I mentioned in the previous post... Its possible that the battery has improved note the 10 hours of usage and only 12% spent and bluetooth usage

[Q] best rom and kernal for battery life

i am sure there is a thread on here already for this but i can't seem to find it i am looking for the best kernal and rom combo with the ultimate battery life with also o.c. supportive as well i am wondering what is it that i can do or flash i am currently running g.b. stock rom with a cynobenmod kernal i am wondering what everyone else best experience is also batteries ext. does anyone have a great cheap battery that extended there life on the evo i use tethering about 5 hours a day and i really need that to work to last all day and making 6-7 phone calls thorugh out that day just so you know i am using a evo 4g
if you don't mind AOSP-based ROMs, try Deck's ROM ([6-21-11][ROM] gingerbread-evo-deck [1.2][2.3.4 Stable] - xda-developers) and then flash a Tiamat kernel (I've been using the latest and its been great) ([Kernel][AOSP] Tiamat | 2.6.38.8 | 6/6/11 -xda-developers). You can also try viperboy's undervolt mod [MOD]viperMOD for AOSP Kernels - v3 beta RC2.4 |Updated 6.14.11|*App in Progress!* - xda-developers on top of the kernel...helps out with battery life. Try the -100mv first then step down gradually till your phone is stable again
I agree with cg about decks and viperboys script. I personally get better battery life and performance with savagedzen. Also try underclocking down to 691....I do and notice no slowdown.
I have been using MikG v2.15 and battery life has never been better. Also it is far more stable than the custom kernels with voltage tweakers in my experience.
+1 to what Ronnie said. I like leaving as much stock as possible. I am running MikG 2.2 and never have to worry about a charger.

I've used MikG, Synergy, KingsROM, etc. (essentially all of the GB Sense-based ROMs that were 2.1/3.0 hybrids). And yea MikG had the best battery life compared to the others but I would only get maybe 12 hours out of it. What are your settings??
I'm with the Deck's crowd here. I use Deck's with Tiamat 3.3.7 (too lazy to try the newer versions), and I don't usually hit 50% battery life till about 18-ish hours off charger with constant texting/Tweetdeck/push notifications and a few phone calls.
I am not using any special settings or tweaks. Using Google sync to access 4 email accounts, etc. Also I unchecked the Always On Mobile Data setting.
It has been 100% stable - no stalls, connectivity issues, or anything like that.
Nice thing about MikG is that it uses Sense.
Decks and the latest tiamat sbc w viper boy....2600 mah battery I'll get 40hrs

Try MIUI's newest release...not sure what it is off the top of my head. Definitely the best battery life I've ever gotten. Get a solid 15 -16 hours with medium to heavy usage. (fbook, youtube, calls, texting, web browsing, downloading).
Im with you - Im on MikG now I love the ROM but I do not even get 12 hours with a 3500 mah battery. That is on a heavy usage day on low usage days I get 18 houirs. Not horrible but not good. Was actually looking for a sense based ROM with better battery.
Cyanogenmod 7 with tiamat kernel, stable version gives me great performance and stability and GREAT battery life.
Check my sig for my setup, I am currently using my AOSP setup. I get at least a day with heavy usage, stock battery. I use Juice Defender too, it seems to work well, especially with AOSP ROMs.
Radios matter too, if you have high Android System usage or cell standby, flash some new radios.
NANDROID.
