School is about to begin and it would be nice to cut down the cost of these high Canadian bills
Is there any app that can make this a reality ?
Viber would probably do the trick.
Viber doesn't allow you to call or to text for free. You can only contact other viber users so it's no different from google talk.
Google Voice, however, gives you free text in USA and Canada.
VoIP calling can be had for free or very cheap in Canada. However the call quality isn't as good (calls often fail)

For outgoing calls only, there are several options. I use and can recomend netTALK. I found their sign-up a little bit shakey through the android browser, but you can always just use the PC and it'll work better.
At the Market : https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nettalk&feature=search_result
Good luck!
Oh, and if you're lucky enough to find free INCOMING calls, message me.
What provider are you with? I'm with Telus and for an extra $5 I get unlimited texting in North America.
Maybe your provider has student packages you can take advantage of.

Data isn't free, so there is no such thing as free texting and calling. Just get a better plan

my plan come with 12gb data usage. using data plan to call is definitely save up some outgoing call cost. i would recommend viper if your friends is using it too.

I have 6gb package ... But I only have 150 anytime minutes, plus unlimited texting.
But if I could cut off my texting plan I wouldn't mind doing that.

I know on Voda, on a data only plan I pay 10p per text I send, voice calling isn't possible (i'm told) but I havn't tried, I imagine it wouldn't be cheap though since it's a data contract.

Would this be an alternative to wificalling? I am running CM7 that doesn't have wificalling but i travel a lot to different countries. Can I forward all my text messages and receive calls?
Don't know about texts. It uses your google voice account. You can make and receive calls over wifi and 3g/4g. Quality is alright and it doesn't use your minutes.
Thanks guys !

Google voice app for texts and Groove ip for voice calls will get the job done if you have a google voice number. No need for cellular minutes or SMS plan when you use this setup, but still need data (3G) or Wifi.
I used GrooveIP for a few days, but my girlfriend complained of echo on her end, even if I was on good wifi or 3G. So stopped using it and back to cellular minutes
Does anyone know or can recommend an app the lets you send/receive SMS & MMS with the Thrive over Wifi?

I have been using Heywire for sms. It does not do mms but it is excellent for sms. The person you send the message to doesn't need to have Heywire installed.

you can try texttab. What it does is connect thru Bluetooth to your phone, and receives any SMS your phone gets and sends them to your thrive. Which you can reply and send on your thrive once your paired up.
TexTab worked awesome on mine! I absolutely love that program. Thanks for the head's up on that app. Definitely worth paying for it...
I have google voice and I have loved being able to text from any browser, including the thrive's browser. Especially if you're on sprint for your mobile servce, I would strongly recommend setting up google voice.

Sprints decision to work in collaboration with google voice makes it this way. I have Sprint and love them for this. A friend of mine is having trouble figuring out how to send google voice sms from his Thrive since he is on TMobile tho.
I use DeskSMS, I started using it over month ago and the fact it actually syncs with my contacts on my phone rather they have Google Voice or any other service makes it IMO the best app there for texting over wifi without having to jump between phone numbers. Especially for those of us that didnt want to lose our MMS capability by completely syncing with Google Voice.
I tried DeskSMS for a little while and it works ok. I stopped using it because Google Voice Canadian numbers are still not available. Hopefully I will use DeskSMS again once Canadian Google voice numbers are available.
Rogers Wireless use to offer wifi calling and text for consumer however this option is no longer compatible with my current plan with them so I had to improvise.
I`ve also tried textplus which work very well and you can get a Canadian number by
paying a monthly fee.

I heard people are using this to get unlimited minutes over WiFi.
People also said that it works to call anybody.
Is that true? The app says the person your calling also needs the app.
yea, I tried it and same thing, other people have to have the app to use it. uninstalled

Vonage App
The people you are calling do not have to have the Vonage app. If it's in the US or Canada you can call them for free. When you first setup the app, it asks you to confirm your phone number so that it can spoof it when you place the calls. The people you call will have whatever number you confirm. I listed my Google Voice number so that way when I call out through the Vonage app, it shows the Google Voice number. I will note that it didn't send the SMS but it's not a big deal as you can click the "Request a Call" button to verify instead.
The free calls to phone numbers in US & Canada is apparently a limited time thing (sort of like the free Google Voice calls but those have so far been extended annually) so after that is when both users would have to have the app to make free calls. At the moment you get 3000 free minutes a month to use so it's worth trying out.
So Google voice isn't going to remain free?

google voice will remain free for 2013.
Then how much will it cost?
I wonder if google voice will turn into a carrier?
I want to be able to receive phone calls and text messages on my tablet. What would be the best way without the other person having to download an app like text+ or line?

Jokes aside, yes a cell phone would be better.
According to some, VOIP programs can have shotty call quality (for both you and the person you're speaking to). But if you're hell bent on it, there's an app that takes advantage of google voice (free) that has ads (pro version = no ads), and isn't that bad for just the ads. Link here
As for text, i believe many people use whatsapp but I've personally never used it, so I'm not sure how it works or if it will work in the way you're intending / interested in.
Hope that helps some.
