Current Evo owner... considering DVP - Venue Pro General

I currently have an Evo with sprint. My contract ends on the 10 thanks to TOS changes, I was able to get out with no ETF.
I've played with a DVP before, and remember absolutely loving it. The build quality seemed amazing.
I guess I'm mainly looking for suggestions, should I just stick with sprint and keep my evo, or do you all think the DVP is amazing enough to switch for?
Have the initial issues been fixed? Like wifi, and I heard WP7 was a data hog even when not using the phone, true?
Thanks!

Performance wise, no complaints since the firmware update. Its fast, stable and just works. Question you have to answer is if WP7 is an OS you will like. If it is and the form factor and gen 1 hardware is good enough for you go for it.
Even after the Titan reveal I dont think I'm missing anything from gen 2 hardware and I still dont regret getting this over the HD7, and in fact enjoy it immensely and am looking forward to Mango. Sticking with it since there wont be any US Nokia WP7 devices for quite a while.

Yes nokia will be alive soon but without physical keyboard!
For the DVP I never see any issues.

Should I Buy an HTC HD2.. I am keeping th G1 though

I like the HTC HD2 screen size but... ITS WINDOWS MOBILE 6.5! YUCK!
Hopefully Android will be ported over to it when the HTC Evo 4g comes out right? I would kill for that phone
Any opinions as I am making this decision soon...
Greatest hardware in the world is still crap if it's crippled with WM 6.5.
Android was ported but not to the American Version. It probably won't be a long wait though.

I lied. Don't listen to me, I have no life. I listen to KanYe West. But they have ported it onto the other models of the HD2.
Your better off getting a WMP7, the UI is great and reminds me of my Zune HD. I like winmo, iphone os, and now android too

Why not just get a GN1? Its a better phone and has the benefit of coming with android 2.1 and not giving a single penny over to evilMS.

Yeah it reminds me of the Zune HD, but as a phone I think the OS is a stupid design. It doesn't seem fluid at all. This, of course, is coming from someone who hasn't had first hand experience. I have only seen videos, and of those videos, I am not impressed.

Ditto. I've never liked Windows Mobile. Symbian was way better than it, and I have to say, Android has blew symbian out of the water now. But didn't xda port android to it? Meh, I've never been a fan of ports, either. Here's what I'm doing: waiting till an upgrade period and if there's any whispers of a phone after the N1, I'll just wait for it and get that.
I have been lurking awile and I wanted to give opinion on the hd2 because I was in the same sitiaution when the hd2 came out. I was following the hd2 since october. And I was e excited about it. I was at the store early got it and I returned it the next day. I have been using a G1 since it came and then played around with a jailbroken and unlocked iphone and the hd2 was terrible. The. Phone itself is gorgeous but once you get over the bells and whistles its not user friendly and it locked up on me 5 times the period I had it.. I am just sticking to my G1 until somethin better comes out I cam say I prefer my rooted eclair G1 over the hd2 and the only other phone I would replace my g with now would an N1 but I don't want to pay the hefty price tag. I know you can flash the hd2 and all that but I don't like the idea of flashing a phone just to get it to work but rather flash, root, jailbreak to make it better. My G1 works fine out the box but its totally different. Beast when you root it.. aside from the freezing issues with the hd2, its just not. User friendly and the phone quality is terrible imo. You can get one for yourself but I would stick with my trusty g1..

Do you have the link?
I had a G1 and now have a HD2. I love the hardware and the winmo is just okay. My phone works great and the screen is awesome.
I do miss my G1. Everyone who likes winmo says it is great for business users. I am just an average user and miss my android apps. I played euchre on my G1 and the only euchre game I can find for winmo is $12.99. Not near as many apps and not many free apps.
I am patiently waiting for android to be ported to the HD2. There are no working ports of android on the HD2 so far. As is says in the previous post they have android ported to a winmo phone. But if you read the thread on XDA, the android port for the HD2 is really not even close.
Don't know about everyone else, but I bought the G1 at launch (10-24-08) and my contract won't be up until November.
I'm hoping for some good Win 7 phones by that time, with a physical keyboard.

i have to say.... im waiting for ANY good phone with a keyboard. companies seem to be stuck on touchscreen as most people like it because it's "sooo cool." cool as it is, it's a pain in the end. my main issue is the lag of the keyboard... it can't keep up with me! at least physical seems to NEVER lag unless the actual phone itself is encountering a laggy moment.

Cars? Yes. I have owned almost 20 different vehicles in the last ten years.
Clothes? No. I still have some clothes that were "cool" in the 90's.
I've been saying those other phones dont come close for a while. The Captivate is garbage with it's broken GPS and laggy file sytem and Samsungs poor support. I returned mine after 2 weeks. The Inspire is nice but it's an old design with god awfull battery life. The Atrix is the best phone you can buy right now.

Oh dont get me started about the last 6 months. Add in the Aria, iphone 4, HD2 modified to run anything, blackberrys and a host of others.
im stil wandering around with all 3 devices in my bag. Inspire has Sense which is the best email and contacts software. Captivate.. I love the screen and the camera and video and audio apps are fantastic. Atrix becuase its a generation ahead of those 2 devices and has the best battery life. Im going crazy from it. Dont get me started on what I am going to do when that 4.5 inch screen Samsung hits.
One thing I like about the Atrix is that I CANNOT change the ROM. saves me HOURS of wasted time and allows me to go to sleep before 3am. I am a device and ROM junkie.

The atrix look promising BUT The dock (ALL of them) require a Tether plan, soo that the fisrt thing to change. There is no ROM or bootloader aviable yet. I'm very interested on it for the same features you mention. The GPS is the best GPS that I have tested. I have a Nexus One, soo i'm in doubt.

iPhone3gs - Xperia X10 - iPhone4 -HTC HD2 - Inspire 4g - iPhone4 - Atrix
That is the last 3 months or so.

I came to the Atrix from a rooted, modded, changed, altered Nexus One No regrets here. Honestly, I flashed a lot of ROMs with my N1 and if I never get to flash a full, true ROM with this phone, I don't care. I like it so much more than my Nexus. The screen (I can see the Atrix in the sunlight!), the size of the screen, the speed, touch sensitivity, etc. Plus I live in a strong AT&T area and do not have problems like some do.
I would like HSUPA enabled, but from what is floating around here, AT&T is supposed to be "turning on" HSUPA at some point.

[Q] Would you still buy a Samsung Epic 4G?

My wife due for a new phone. She has a HTC Touch Pro 2 now.
Would you still buy a Samsung Epic 4G or wait for something else? Here's the hitch, she loves the keyboard so... she wants a phone with a keyboard.
I've read the HTC EVO shift is not that great and the screen is smaller. That's why I was leaning toward the Epic 4G
Any suggestions would help. I know the Epic 4G is getting old and don't want her to get stuck with an older phone if a newer, better one is coming out soon.
p.s. Android phones only please. (I don't see Windows making it!)
The only thing better is the dual core, but then you get to go through all the development cycle again. Depends on whether you want stability or raw fracking power tech.
Sent from Bonsai 7.0.3
Thanks!
She will be keeping the phone with the stock rom.
I think it will be fast enough for her. She just uses it for internet, youtube, texting, emails. Nothing too major.
Yes if it for an everyday user it the perfect phone! Beautiful screen and super fast for an everyday user!

I would hold off and wait, the new phones are coming soon. You might find something you like better, if not then you could always get the epic then for less probably.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
Well, if you want her to be involved in the latest tech, I'd wait a bit until there's a phone that's dual-core and has a keyboard. Unfortunately, I haven't heard anything coming soon like that, so it's your choice.
For her basic uses and stuff, she might want to wait only because the keyboard on this phone is a bit laggy in its current state.
If she's okay with that, then buy an Epic It's still a great phone.
Yea as long as she doesn't mind a little wobble here and there on her phone...
i personally would just get the nexus! its a google phone so you know it will be supported by devs and google themselves
edit: nvm i didnt see the part that said she likes the keyboard
just go with the epic
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Absolutely! I've loved my device and I'm itching for my new one. Developing on it has been rewarding, and all the missed sleep has been worth it.
I went from the tp2 to the Epic and I don't how to say it in nice words. I had the tp2 for 1 1/2 years and if I had know how good android was compared to winmo 6.5 I would have thrown that thing in a lake. Going to the epic felt like going from a 486 dx2-66 to a quad core computer. IMOP the tp2 was the worst touch phone I have ever owned. If she is like my wife and just wants a nice phone that works and no modding then I would get the epic now. Everything on it is allmost instant when touched and I have not had any keyboard issues at all.
My epic is stock rom and rooted no custom roms. have had it for 6 months and only locked up twice so far where I had to pull the battery.

The keyboard has issues with skipping letters, which makes it very difficult to type fast on, and there's a slight wobble when open (nothing drastic).
I would definitely factor in software support too, which is severely lacking with the Epic 4G. You have to consider all the bug/security/critical fixes that are a significant part of the updates. I, personally, have been having software issues from the DK28 leak to EC05, Eclair was the only one that was every completely stable for me.
for 19.99 hell yea.
i love my epic, but ive recently played around with a mytouch 4g and that thing is blazing quick and snappy. everyone here says the epic is the quickest and best non dual-core phone (and i trust them since they know more than me), but i feel that phone is more responsive. it's stock and so is mine. its running adw like my epic. why do you guys think the mytouch runs much smoother?
What kind of software problems do you have? I have seen very little on my end. Confuses me on xda where some say there are a lot of problems and some have very few to all most no problems. I type very fast on my keyboard and it never skips a beat.

Especially now that it comes with Froyo, an Epic is a no-brainer for these prices. I paid many times more and coming from an original Touch Pro, it was like going from a Dodge Dart hooptie to a Lamborghini.

Are you sure it comes with Froyo? I'm helping someone pick out a phone, and this person, like the OP's wife, will be using it completely stock and unrooted. I can't find the details on sprint.com either way, but Best Buy and Radio Shack both say 2.1 in their specs about the phone. I heard there were problems with the updates, so I'm not sure at all that it comes with 2.2, and that's a real consideration for someone who will be running this stock, I think.

I can only go by what I saw in a local Sprint store. I would hope that they would have all their stock replaced with 2.2 versions out of the box, but even if they don't, a stock 2.1 phone should receive the 2.2 upgrade over the air fairly quick. I'd just advise trying to get it updated before installing much else on it. The latest Froyo is as official as it gets and is pushed everywhere to phones which can receive it, AFAIK.
i also came from a touch pro 2 and i was amazed how good the EPIC was I think it's a great phone. Plus radiosack.com has the epic for $19.99 with a new contract and $49 upgrade. That's a steal. I like the phone so much(and hated att service so much) the price drop doesn't even bother me. The last 6 months was worth the launch price.

Oh my, thanks for that. We can't pass that up (totally new contract). If it doesn't have 2.2, I'll just go ahead and root it and put Syndicate on it.
With regard to the question the OP asked, I suppose my answer is that, yes, I would buy another Epic, at least right now. I've looked around at what Sprint currently has, and there's nothing I'd rather have than the Epic. The keyboard doesn't mean as much to me as I thought it would, but I'd still prefer the Epic to the Evo. I'm not sure the upcoming Nexus S is much better than the Epic. Now, once the Evo 3D comes out, that might be something to look at, but that's months away. I have no plans or desires to switch phones, but have been looking a lot to help someone else, and I'm glad that I discovered that the Epic is still the phone to get if you're tied to Sprint (company discount).

If the keyboard doesn't mean that much to you, you might as well wait little over a week for the nexus, for the better form factor alone. I guess you're weighing price vs size & software support, all other things being almost equal.

Losing faith in atrix?

Anyone else slightly losing faith in their atrix?
I just put gingerbread on my cappy and I'm so impressed by the speed. I know I'm comparing froyo to gingerbread but for a dual core Id expect a bit betterr performance. The cappy handles live wallpapers much better than the atrix.
What's keeping me here is the fact that moto seems to actually care, the phone has gotten two updates already, and while second one has lower my phone down, I imagine that will be fixed.
Do you think the atrix is going to "fly" once gingerbread comes out for it? That's what I'm hoping for, or even if moto unlocked the bl

This, I believe, refers to what the OP may be describing.
Smartphones are newer and better all the time. People on here buy every new phone! The Atrix new luster and excitement has worn off, and people are ready to move on to the next big thing(seems to be Galaxy S 2).
Thats the nature of the tech industry, and more specifically the smartphone industry.
I don't think I'd mind waiting 6 months, but also part of me says that 6 months is a long time to get the phone to a smooth point.
It will fly if we get the 2.4 gingerbread optimized for dual cores.
Hey,
I had my Evo for about a year before having to make the decision to switch to AT&T. Here in the USVI, AT&T is just plain out faster, calls are clearer, there are less issues with the service and so on and so forth. I would have kept my Evo until the Evo 3D came out or something.
The Atrix is a beast of a phone and the service is great! I'm satisfied with what I have and from this point on, it can only get better.
Have faith, man.
I never got all those comments about how unresponsive the Atrix is.. mine is super responsive. Granted I come from a Touch HD (WinMo) phone which was friggin' slow as molasses by today's standards so yeah.. but hey the iPhone 4 is supposed to be a snappyness reference yet I constantly see my friends iPhones lag doing some basic thing at some point, and I find my Atrix to be way up there, so i'm not sure about all the complaining.. I don't get it.

Things that I would like to change:
-Different Themed Notifications bar with GingerBread Update
-HSPA+
I like the phone, I dont have any other problems with it. I can live with a locked bootloader, to me its not that big of a deal anymore because we wont get it unlocked....
I lost faith in my phone months ago. Wish I held out for an actually good phone.

The thing that sucks about this phone is mostly just the locked bootloader... sure gingerbread may come, and we finally got the hspa+, but what I really want is to be able to flash custom roms. Until then we're basically crippled and are stuck with clunky and featureless motoblur which barely taps into this things potential.

Lol.. No matter how amazing a device is, there will always be those who criticize it.
The hardware specs and technological innovations implemented on this phone are unlike any phone ever produced. For you to imply that this is not "actually a good phone" makes you appear very ignorant. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way.
I think the main issue here is usability for the average non-tech savvy user.. When they don't understand why the phone isn't doing what they want it to do, they assume it can't or it just sucks.. There are some users such as myself who understand the progression of new hardware & the intricacies involved with getting software to interface correctly with it. We expect to run into issues & focus on solutions rather than complaining.
If you want an environment where everything just works without much input needed from you, consider steve jobs walled garden aka iOS
Otherwise, dig in, try to understand how android & the phone works.. It's only gonna get better.

Most roms are just gingerbread with features that don't work. Flashing roms is fun until you needs to actually use your phone. Custom roms and kernals have so many bugs.

im interested in the galaxy 2
Bell users have it worse.
We haven't even gotten a freakin update yet...

No one expects to run into issues with a 600 dollar piece of technology. They should, and rightfully so, expect it to work. THe G2x seems to have almost identical specs, and that phone performs much better under all situations. Android isn't about forcing the user to do unnecessary steps to make his phone work on par with any other on the market, its about giving you the opportunity to allow you to do more than whats on the the market. I can say right now, for the past 3 android phones i've boughten, i've never had to do anything special to make them work. Power on. Power off. Done. What makes the atrix different?
I know that sounds like a hateful post, but it's not. I just don't think it's fair for people to say a 600 dollar piece of electronic isn't gonna work right out of the box. I do still love my atrix, the form is great and the fingerprint scanner is very nice. But my concerns are legitimate and aren't solvable by steve jobs.
I'm fed up. Totally disappointed by the phone. The webtop mode remindes me of the carphone idea. Seemed good at the time buy useless shortly after. Hopefuly the galaxy S 2 will be announced tomorrow for att. If not on ordering from UK. This is the best android phone out right now for AT&T. Almost makes me wish I didn't jump ship for the iPhone 4 in June from T-Mobile (g2x & nexus s)

I think AT&T is announcing the samsung infuse tomorrow, not the SGSII, but who knows. I agree, webtop was cool for that first time you show your friends, but i've never used it since. While i have a HUGE grudge against samsung from the captivate debacle, i might try the SGSII but that probably won't hit until july like the cappy.
I switched to an inspire, I love the phone and everything about it, no lag with the latest cm. I'm switching back to the atrix for the ffc and battery life, battery life is abysmal on the inspire.

[Q] How is android on the HD2?

like is it easy to install custom roms? do i just use rom manager?, is there any problems? are there like any cons?
i also have an upgrade. So im either gonna buy an hd2 from craigslist and save the upgrade or get the g2x. any suggestions/tips?
you can only use the rom manager is you use clk
if you install CWM then you can just download the zip file and flast it without it being hooked up tothe pc

so theres no limitations? Its like it was meant to run android?
something are a little slower such as gps but the majority of things run well depending on the rom you are using
Oh okay, nicee. So, whats your opinion? Buy the g2x or buy this? i love the dual core g2x but hd2 can run sooo much!
Depends on what you want. To me you sound like you're only interested in performance so go and get the G2X. If you were interested in flashing and trying out all sorts of stuff then the HD2 would be a great choice.
I for one will never buy a another tegra SoC because of what nvidia's doing to the gaming world.
Anyways, why not a sensation or sgs2? Those are surely better than the G2X in performance, and everything else, but the sensation will come with a signed bootloader hacking it fully will come in about a years time, like all other locked bootloaders, while the sgs 2 comes unlocked.

i thought about the sensation and its gonna be 200 dollars where as im gonna get the g2x for 100 from radio shack. The sgs2 looks really good, but i cant trust the galaxy s series. Do you know when the sgs2 comes out?
The sgs2 already came out. And why don't you trust them? Updates? Well the international sgs2 will get updates fast like the international sgs. Problems? So far people say god works with a few responses saying otherwise. Battery is the same, let say good, little say bad.

Im in the US, it wasnt released yet. i dont like samsung really. I mean if it comes out reasonably soon for the US then i might just wait for it
If you wait for aT&t, verizon, t-mo, sprint to release their versions, you're going to also have to wait for them to release their updates, which is noticeably slower than samsung, and the reason as to why people complain samsung updates slow, even though it's not their fault.
If you use aT&t, you can get the international sgs 2 and it will work with 3g and their "4g". Unless you're waiting so as to renew your contract so as to get a better deal.
im tmobile and im only 17 so switching companies isnt really an option.
android works perfectly on HD2
Personally I'm waiting on the SGSII to drop on TMOUS. Until then the HD2 is all I need. If you can wait (might be couple months) that's the best phone. Rooted with a ROM already. By the time we get it.... it will be solid with ROMs.
Next option would be the Sensation, but it's ability to be rooted and ROM'd is still in question.
G2X has had issues and would worry me. I'm with Kailkti and say FU! Nvidia. I've been an Nvidia fanboy for a long time with PC gaming. No more. But the phone is more powerful than the HD2, better sound, maybe some better other things. Only played with it in the store.
HD2 I love and is a ROM machine. You can't go wrong with it.
If you plan on doing a 2 year commitment... I would spend the extra money on a newer device. SGSII if you can wait... Sensation if you can't.

Custom ROMs can be very easy yes. Just follow the directions exactly. Watch this to see how easy...
Getting back on point with your original question... I would buy the HD2 used and save the upgrade. The HD2 will keep you happy with everything except super high end gaming. Even then it plays most games. I run many cracked Gameloft games on it. It will keep you happy for months. It's what I did a couple of months ago while I wait for the SGSII.
Then either use your upgrade on the Sensation and sell it for profit or wait for the SGSII or another great device down the road.

Those simple words just saved my day, thank you
I am just another person thinking of HD2. I am a Rom-Lover, so HD2 is perfect for me, even perfect to me than perfection itself.
HD2 with Android is incredible. When I got the phone I wasn't sure I could be bothered to change but reading the guides on here and seeing how much you can customize Android and how well it works made me switch. Never looked back. It's amazing!
So, i bought the G2x and it was the best decision i've ever made. I LOVE ITT. I came from an evo shift and this is greatttttt
