For themes, my best friends are Ninja Morph Pro and ZipSigner 2 (both in the market). I take elements i like from several themes, with some of my own changes to make a single theme. After making the changes, zip the folder from within your file manager, then use ZipSigner 2 to sign it. Change the signed zip file from .zip to .apk, then install like a regular app. Then just open Theme Chooser and apply the theme. Preview may not show. Just look at the number/theme name at the bottom.

Manually messing with files is a complete wrong approach to theming CM7-based ROMs. Look up some theme manager howto. More stuff can be done via metamorphs in case this is not enough for you.

systemui or framework ?
x-plore can open apk as a zip file. can I use it to replace icon ?

Simply replacing icon with exactly the same name will work sometime. Try to replace files or images one by one rather than extracting all files. It will lead to installation error.

I want to port the lidroid toggles from Simplicity to USSRv7. How would I do this? I have the lidroid res, system ui, and framework res apks.
Sent from my GT-P3110 using xda app-developers app
Change the file extension of lidriod-res.apk to zip
Unzip lidriod-res.zip
goto res/drawable-hdpi
Copy the toggles pngs only
Past them to your unzipped res/drawable-hdpi
zip back up and change extention back to apk
put in flashable zip and flash with system mounted
I just replaced my lidroidres.apk with the one from the ROM I wanted and it worked! Thanks though

Yes just replace lidroid-res.apk to change toggles if your rom uses lidriod in its ui
Any problems just unzip the lidroid-res.apk of the toggles you want & past them into one from your rom
Hey if someone could link me to theme chooser, that'd be awesome. I'm talking about the CM one. Also, what would be the necessary build.prop tweaks that would make it work?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I don't believe you would be able to get it to work without the CM framework and system files. It would take more than a simple build prop tweak to get it to work if at all. Unless you want to build CM from source you're only other option is to flash CM to use theme chooser.

You can extract the apk from a downloaded version of CM using 7zip if you really want the apk. You can install it but it won't do anything without the framework to support it. Some of the custom launchers have themes you can download from the playstore that might be an option for you if you want a new theme. I would browse in the theme section for advice.

Sorry I'm a noob but is there a way to incorporate the CM framework into my ROM? (Are you talking about framework-res.apk? If so, can I use that on the JWR ROMs?)

Its been over 2 years since I built or modified a ROM but its not as simple as just dragging and dropping framework-res and systemui versions you want into a ROM. There may be other custom ROM's out there with theme chooser if the dev used CM source to build his ROM but tehn why not just use CM? The easiest way I know of to theme a phone is to use a custom launcher and choose a theme off the play store or use an app like UCCW and again look for themes for it in the playstore. UCCW (ultimate custom clock widget) isn't the most user friendly app but it gets the job done. And make sure you back up your phone before making any changes using launchers or theme apps for if they modify systemui.apk or framework-res.apk in any way those changes can't be easily reversed. Always have a backup of your stock ROM.
I am replacing some icons from my SystemUI.apk and Framework-res.apk.
1) I decompiled SystemUI and Framework-res.apk
2) I went to /res/drawable-Idpi
3) Replaced adb, battery, battery charging icons (framework-res) & Wifi, Signal, blutooth(SystemUI).
4) Recompiled, Pushed and device booted fine.
But the problem is icons have new colour, but the are of old shape. (Check 1st attachment) (Check 2nd attachment for new Icon)
I tried to Google my problem, but cannot find any solution.
But some icons (Battery full notification Marked in red) are changed.
Bump!
Can anyone help?

the only thing i can think of is delete the build folder in the decompiled apk folder and then recompile again
you can also try instead of decompiling the apk to just unzip it and replace the pngs like for like
the pngs where notproperly moddifiedbwith photoshop.

I have tried both things even before I posted this thread. Not working. This is just a problem with stock deodexed ROM. I can replace png in custom ROM successfully.

Thanks for your reply, I have used uot kitchen before, so no need of detailed instructions. I tried it but not working.
However I solved the problem by my method. I got SystemUI.apk from AOSP ROM, ported and made compatible to stock. Replaced icons, edited layout, and problem solved.
Don't say I am copying others work. I have created my own layouts and just used SystemUI.apk as base package.
