google voice adds tablet support - Xoom General

See the change log!

yeah works great

Yep, side loaded Google Voice was recognized by the Market and updated... Finally!

Yes indeed! This is just one more step towards uniting the phone and tablet as one. AKA: Ice Cream Sammich!

I had to uninstall my sideloaded version and download the market version to get the most recent version. I wonder why they didn't use the frames available in honeycomb like they do for gmail.

even though i have the acer iconia i will chime in.
this app is a 100% complete waste of time and effort.
you cant make calls, cant check voicemails... cant do anyhting but text and chat...
seriously wtf....
just use google talk and dont waste your friends and family limited texts.
seriously... wtf good is this app... none... if i cant make VOIP calls with my GV account then there is 100% no reason.
its the same reason why i never used GV on my phone... what the f** seriously...
it servs no purpose other than to make voip calls.
hide my real phone number?
jesus if you are that paranoid then maybe you shouldnt have a cell phone to begin with.

You can check voicemails, get your facts straight bro. Sometimes people will call/text my GV number, so if I'm in a spot with no reception and my Zoom is on wifi, I can get the message at least and call back from a land line if it's necessary. I don't need to call from my Xoom, not why I bought it. It's free, and if it wasn't I would only use it on my DInc.
If you don't like it, cool. I'm still going to use it though.

i get the voicemails on mine fine. you can make calls with Groove IP and Google Voice together.

I dont know why they decide to come up with this commercial after its realeased and not before... the phone speaks for itself in the store it looks exactly the same as an iphone to the general public which is a big plus... there was 8 people at the store today swapping moto droids for the incredible... my day 1 battery life sucked but I was messing with it all day... I let it die until it shut itself off... I still believe that this is the way you need to train your batteries whether it is true or not

I've had google voice for months now... its only useful if you plan on using alot of minutes and setting your google number in a favorite 10 number... all numbers in and out of your phone show as your google number on the network... with android integrated google voice its nice but it was a pain in the arse for other phones

I'm on T-Mobile with the myFaves plan and my monthly bill often has both minutes and SMS at less than two dozen
Even if you don't use your Google number as a favorite or for calling people, everyone can still use it for free SMS, especially since it's instant-push now!
Nice commercial.
I love my google voice. Free visual voice mail with transcription. If thats not enough, you can record conversations, conference call with up to 4 people, free sms, and receive one call from several numbers. When ever someone says here is the info, I just dial the number 4, and the conversation is recorded for play back later. Very nice.

Good call/text blocking program for Gingerbread

I'm running Android 2.3.4 or gingerbread whatever.. I used to use a app called "Blacklist", it would send unk number's or any number not in my contacts directly to voicemail with no notifications... samething with text. It isn't compatible with gingerbread for reason's unkown.. is anyone using this version of android and have a program that is similar/compatible? Thanks in advance
ChompSMS, Handcent, GoSMS all have blacklisting for text. Not sure about calling.
Thanks, I know Chomp, Handcent etc.. are text apps though... I need something to block random #s from texting me... Kinda like when you're married but give your number to a girl, she calls you, you guys hook and she keeps bugging you type of blocking text

If you get the number they are calling you from you can file a formal complaint which will get the harassing companies fined for their actions. I once caused a 10,000 USD fine to fall upon Dish Network for their actions .

Try the app I mentioned. The reason is, it rejects calls and you can control how it proceeds. It can send the calls to VM or block completely.
And I have GV as well, that is the # I basically use for unwanted calls.
Blacklist by Ming software does both call and and blocking. Works great.

Not true. It is not Honey Comb that is missing the dialler, but the 10.1 that has this feature locked. Galaxy Tab 8.9 is running Honey Comb too and you can make GSM calls on it.

Is it possible to make a porting of galaxy tab 8.9?
Guys.....it does work.
I have been using it for months to make and receive call now - YES, you will have to be wifi connected, since it does not have the phone hardware, but it works .
Download the app: GrooveIP and sign up with your Google-voice number.
Works perfectly and it even interfaces with your Google contacts. AND if you prefer to keep a log of your calls, it creates that too (can be saved and restored with MyBackup-Pro)
Enjoy

Do you have a GSM 8.9? Can you confirm this first-hand or provide link to someone else who can? I have a GSM 8.9 order now, and if it can make/receive GSM phone calls in Honeycomb, this will be a very welcome surprise!
I want make calls with my sim number, when this will be possible?

Well, depending on how Szadzik answers my question above, maybe soon, maybe never. That said, I do have an 8.9 Tab on order (just waiting for stock to arrive before it's shipped -_-), so once I have that in my possession, you better believe I'll be reporting here about its GSM phone capabilities or lack thereof.
Here's the thing though, for anyone who says that the hardware is incapable of GSM phone calls, don't listen to them because that's complete and utter BS. At this point, if Honeycomb tablets can't make/receive GSM phone calls, it's a software limitation, not hardware.
Basically, any GSM/UMTS modem is integrally capable of making an receiving regular phone calls.
I'm pretty certain that it is at the behest of mobile providers that tablet manufacturers choose to leave out phone calling abilities. I mean, think about it from the carrier perspective; why would they willingly want to support a single device that "does it all"? That would be bad for business... However, if you make it such that the consumer absolutely MUST have both devices (tablet AND smartphone), then that means two line subscriptions and more money in their pockets.
Personally, if I were designing a new tablet and smartphone, this is what I would do:
The tablet would ideally be the central device, handling both data and voice services. The phone would be more of an accessory to the tablet rather than a standalone device. The two would be constantly connected to each other via bluetooth 4.0 or something (high speed, and low power). Imagine the phone being like a Galaxy S media player, but able to make and receive voice/video calls/texts/etc all over bluetooth via the tablet's connection to the carrier. Of course, if you wanted to, you could seamlessly transition calls to and from the phone accessory and the tablet depending on the situation, and all SMS/MMS/email/etc is always synchronized between the two devices in real time. Wouldn't that be cool?
Of course, all this could be done through software too, so I guess the real ideal scenario would be if someone made an app that did all this by installing onto whatever tablet and phone you wanted.

Szadzik posted several days ago that he had a GT 8.9 and could make GSM phone calls on it. I asked him to confirm, but have not seen a response from him yet. I'm inclined to call him out on BS with that claim.
Having said that, if you have google voice, you should definitely get GroveIP from the market. Use your GV number to make/receive true VoIP calls over any data connection!

This GSMArena article says so too: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_gal...eview_amazingly_packs_telephony-news-2709.php
However the article is a bit dated, the final release may not have it. Someone who has a 8.9 tab will need to confirm this.
Anyways, if this is ever added to the 10.1 (probably with the Ice Cream Sandwich update), I hope there will be an option to turn it off. I don't want incoming calls to my tab!

yes

Hangouts is a WhatsApp copycat which does nothing to integrate Google services and somehow manages to remove functionality with the inability to initiate audio-only voicechats. It's a shameless maneuver designed to force Google+ down users' throats.
What's worse, once this rolls into Gmail there's a good chance we'll lose the ability to make phone calls.

It's not a whatsapp copy cat, but an evolution. Let me know when whatsapp let's me message from the pc and the tablet and we'll talk.
Also, no one is forcing Google+.
And they are adding voice chat support soon, but most likely be through Google voice. Also adding SMS support, which will take it even further beyond whatsapp.

Thanks for knowing what is best for me! Your the greatest. Also that .apk didn't work.
I love how some of you are such little fanboys that you actually think the way they are handling this is "OK." If I wanted something shoved down my throat, I woulda bought an iphone. We are beta testing this festering turd for them...and I don't want to lose functionality being a beta tester with no option to revert back.
Hangouts is complete garbage in it's current state. It's current state makes it a good replacement for the MESSENGER app...except they didn't even include ****ing SMS. It is however not a good replacement for talk.
Talk is an IM app. The beauty was I could open talk, look at statuses, know where people were (desktop, mobile, etc), and talk to people on the fly. Now I have no ****ing idea who/what I am messaging, if they are sitting in a conference call, or if they are just bored at their computer at work. I also use to to communicate with my wife...when it is green she is at her desk...when it is away I will just call or SMS her and not expect an instant response. Now I just lob a message out there without knowing if I am interrupting her at work or if she will respond in a few hours or a few seconds.
I am also no longer available for video chat for the people using talk. My whopping 100 minutes cell phone plan means I rely on talk heavily to talk to my family and my wife with video chats. They want to get up with me...they just video message me. No cell phone minutes used. Now they have to message me to get me to invite them to a video call....because I am using the **** that is hangouts and for whatever reason I am no longer available for video chat.
So once again...this app sucks in its current state for MY uses. Being FORCED to be a beta tester isn't my idea of fun.
Anyways...still looking how to get back to just straight old TALK if anyone has any other ideas.

A beta test is an apt description. What other plausible explanation is there for leaving out such basic features as status icons / messages and voicechat?
I can understand various media outlets / blogs being fooled by the aesthetics (read: WhatsApp lookalike), but I expect logic to prevail on this forum and justifying the loss of features amounts to fanboyism in its purest form.

To my knowledge it doesn't work if you don't have a Google+ account.
I don't like that Google has forced users to choose between gtalk and hangouts, especially since they are listing several important features as forthcoming. I do however, understand them wanting to increase the adoption of g+ because when glass comes out the g+ features that it adds will be simply amazing and unless users are already used to, and actively using g+ they won't see any reason to have glass.
All in all I think it's a smart move by Google, unpopular yes, but still smart over the long term.
I'm just dealing with it for now, I wasn't a gtalk user so the loss of features doesn't bother me in the slightest, I'm only irked by the loss of choice.
LT
Hangouts sucks!
I do not like it.
In previous versions of JellyBam it can be downgraded, just uninstalling updates, but now in 8.4.0, I had to remove Hangouts, I prefer not having a Google IM than having Hangouts.
It seems that Google was bought by MS, they are doing things that show they do not care about people.

I've gone back and forth, Hangouts sometimes takes a while to launch which annoys me since I drive all day for work and like to respond to texts at stoplights. I've just enabled ART so maybe I will see better performance.
As for texting on my other devices I've been using Mighty Text on PC, Nexus 7 and phone for a while. It is ok but reading a text on PC or Tablet does not clear it from the phone, I never tried Hangouts on the other ones.

OK we were at cross purposes, I thought you meant are we using Hangouts as our SMS app. Is it the best? Down to personal choice. I mostly use Facebook since that's what most of my family are on. I have some people on Hangouts but the main person I speak to on Hangouts I have spoken to for years, originally on MSN and then gTalk so now Hangouts.
Er... no. I find EvolveSMS much better, completely uninstalled hangouts from phone. ..
I tried using Hangout. I did enjoy it, however, am using new app and am much enjoying it.
