The time I posted this, I just spend about 2 hours..doing this and that tweaking my android because I stuck with this (m***a f****r) connection problem. I'm unable to enable the data connection. Previously, we have met the problem occurred when;
1. We already checked "Use Packet Data" but data connection signal still doesn't exist. (means no internet connection dough').
2. Then; inside "Phone Information" --> 'Menu' (*#*#4636#*#*), no matter how many hundred times we clicked it, it only show "Enable Data Connection". (Usually you can see it'll switched between "Enable Data Connection" & "Disable Data Connection")
When you facing this problem,what you can try to do is;
1. unchecked the "Use Packet Data" first;
2. hold up "Power Off" button will show an option. Make sure you can see "Data Network Mode" (*Data network mode deactivated), then click it.
3. Successful done, it'll result you:
a) data connection indicator appear beside your phone signal indicator.
b) "Use Packet Data" checked automatically.
c) inside "Phone Information" --> 'Menu' (*#*#4636#*#*) menu; currently show "Disable Data Connection".
*all this guide are tested with my:
Samsung SGS (i9000)
Firmware: 2.2.1
Baseband: I9000ZSJPG
Build Number: Froyo.ZSPJG

Check APN settings
Thanks for your post, I had the same symptoms today. I followed the steps outlined, but they didn't work for me. Then I checked the apn settings for some reason and saw that I didn't have one set up. I set up an APN using values from wiki dot apnchanger dot org (can't send in a link as a new user).
Under Mobile Network settings, you'll see Access Point Names. I set up one called internet, saved the values, and I'm in business.

IP 193.30.166.1
IP Port 9201
APN goto.virginmobile.uk
Login ID user
Password Leave blank
Bearer GPRS
I have entered some of these settings into the Connection that MMS seems to be using but I dont know where to put in the
IP Port and Server URL
Can any one help
Thanks
I don't know which version of windows your using as the MMS composer is different in WM2003SE. I can tell you how I got mine working and its a 2 stage process:
Part 1
1. Create a new connection by coing to Start->Settings->Connections and tap on the Connections icon.
2. Tap on the "Advanced" tab and then tap on the "Select Networks" button.
3. Tap on the lower one of the two "New..." buttons, i.e. the one below the "My Work Network" drop down menu.
4.0 On the "General" tab, enter a name of "Virgin MMS".
4.1 On the "Modem" tab, tap on the "New..." button.
4.3 Enter a name for the connection of "Virgin MMS", select a modem type of "Cellular Line (GPRS)" and then tap on the "Next" button.
4.4 Enter an access point name of "goto.virginmobile.uk" and then tap on the "Next" key.
4.5 Enter a user name of "user", ensure that all other fields are empty and then tap on the "Finish" button.
4.6 On the "Proxy Settings" tab, ensure that the "This network connects to the Internet" is NOT ticked" and then tap on the "ok" button in the top right hand corner of the screen.
4.7 In the drop down menu for "Programs that automatically connect to a private network should connect using:", change this back to "My Work Network" (or whatever was in this field before you started this process).
5. You can now exit from the Settings screens as Part 1 is complete.
Part 2
1. You need to go into MMS composer.
2. In WM2003SE you need to go into the "Tools->MMS Settings" option.
3.0 On the "Preferences" tab, in the "Connect via:" option, enter/select "Virgin MMS".
3.1 On the "Servers" tab, tap on the "New" button.
3.2 Enter a "Server name:" of "Picture Message"
3.3 Enter a "Gateway:" of "193.30.166.1".
3.4 Enter a "Port number:" of "9201". Don't worry if you don't have a "Port number:" field as the system will default to this anyway.
3.5 Enter a "Server address" of "http://mms.virginmobile.co.uk:8002" and then tap on the "OK" button.
3.6 Tap on the "ok" button in the top right hand corner of the screen.
That's the end of the two stages and you should now be able to send picture and video messages (I've tried both).
Two things to be aware of:
1. The send/receive does seem to take ages.
2. Don't try to send pictures which aren't JPG or BMP as they won't go and you end up thinking that there's a problem with your config. I speak from experience here.
GPRS settings on Vorgin?
Slightly Off topic but I'm trying to Use my xda 1 with virgin and am trying to get the GPRS set up and am struggling, is it essentially the same settings as these?
Many thanks
Nate :?:
The GPRS setting for internet access only involves 1 stage in order to set it up. It's almost exactly the same as the first part of MMS:
1. Create a new connection by going to Start->Settings->Connections and tap on the Connections icon.
2. Tap on the "Advanced" tab and then tap on the "Select Networks" button.
3. Tap on the upper one of the two "New..." buttons, i.e. the one usually below the "My ISP" drop down menu.
4.0 On the "General" tab, enter a name of "Virgin GPRS".
4.1 On the "Modem" tab, tap on the "New..." button.
4.3 Enter a name for the connection of "Virgin GPRS", select a modem type of "Cellular Line (GPRS)" and then tap on the "Next" button.
4.4 Enter an access point name of "goto.virginmobile.uk" and then tap on the "Next" key.
4.5 Enter a user name of "user", ensure that all other fields are empty and then tap on the "Finish" button.
4.6 On the "Proxy Settings" tab, ensure that the "This network connects to the Internet" is ticked and then tap on the "ok" button in the top right hand corner of the screen.
4.7 In the drop down menu for "Programs that automatically connect to Internet should connect using:", ensure that the "Virgin GPRS" entry is displayed.
5. You can now exit from the Settings screens as your connection set up is now complete. You shouldn't have to do any other config work to use the internet.
Ensure that when you try this connection that you don't have your XDA docked in its cradle or you won't be connecting via GPRS.
Happy surfing.
Thanks mate, thats done it. I have tried almost exactly that and didn't get it quiteright.
Appreciate the help.
Virgin MMS
Have entered this setup info into xda2 But it still wont connect and returns the following message
Dialed:gotovirginmobile.uk
Cannot connect for an unknown reason. To
check your connection settings and change
them if needed, tap Settings. If the
problem continues, reset your mobile device
according to your manufactures documentaion
and try again
Help
Thanks
If the above text is exactly what appears on your screen then your problem is easily fixed. It looks like your missing a full stop, i.e. "gotovirginmobile.uk" should be "goto.virginmobile.uk". This is the value you entered in step 4.4 of Part 1.
I tried removing the full stop on my M1000 and I got exactly the same error reported so this should hopefully sort the problem.
Virgin MMS
Sorry my mistake I had put goto.virginmobile.uk in at step 4.4
but omitted it from my previous post
Should the connection for MMS use the same one that internet explorer uses, that one uses one called MOBILE WEB GPRS that appears to have the same setup. Browsing on the internet works OK

Check out this link,it may finally resolve your problem.

Okay, so I've shagged my internet settings completely. I now can't connect to the internet at all, despite having a good strength 3G connection.
Could someone help me restore my internet settings? I know it's a bit of a vague question, but I don't know where the problem lies.
I've already tried the "automatically configure connection", and it unfortunately didn't help (after disconnect/reconnect and also after a reset).
Please help me - I feel naked without the internet in my pocket! lol
Cheers,
John.

Could someone do me a favour?
I need someone with a Touch HD, from Orange (in the UK), to go to the following screen...
Start -> Settings -> Connections -> Connections -> Advanced -> Select Networks
...and tell me what "programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using".
I'd really appreciate it, as I believe mine was set to something that now doesn't work, but one of the others does!!!
Thanks in advance,
John.
Mine is set to Orange Internet
Post deleted, because I've made things worse
To get the same settings as mine, try the following:
Tap Start
Tap Settings
Tap the Connections tab
Tap Connections
Tap the Advanced tab
Tap Select Networks
In the first drop down-box select Orange Internet
Tap Edit (if Orange Internet isn't listed tap new)
Select Orange Internet
Tap Edit
Data settings
Enter Orange Internet for the name
Select Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G) from the modem list
Tap Next
Enter orangeinternet in the access point name
Tap Next
Leave the 'Username', 'Password' and 'Domain' blank
Tap Finish
Tap the Proxy Settings tab
Tick 'This network connects to the Internet'
Un-tick 'This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet'
Tap ok three times
Tap X
Hope that helps,
JB
Very much appreciated John Boy, but that's exactly what I had. There must have been something wrong elsewhere.
I use the past-tense, as I've just flashed my phone with the newest version of wm6.5 (I favour miri as my custom rom), and that's solved all my problems.
I pretty much expected that I'd need to hard reset to solve this problem, but it'll probably help others in future, having that list of settings and info.
Thanks again mate - much appreciated.
John.
I have a data plan, and also use Wi-Fi at home.
But I just found out, all my messenger(Windows live) conversations are sent as Text message. Why???
I do not have text message plan, so it would cost me a lot...
Is there a setting to change this to use internet instead???(I thought it does, but obviously it does NOT!)
Thanks.
Try changing sms setting:
1. Run CommManager
2. Hit "Change phone settings" so you see "Phone settings" screen
3. Hit "Menu" button and choose "Advanced network"
4. Go to "SMS Service" tab
5. Choose "GPRS" in checkbox labelled "SMS over".
6. Viola!

Thanks a lot!
My setting was "GSM prefered", now change it to "GPRS", hope this solves my problem.
i followed the below step to create a WIFI hot spot from my windows XP. however my Galaxy TAB don't see the network i created but i can see with other devices and computer is there is a trick to it ?
#
Click to open the "Start" menu, then click to open the Control Panel. In the Control Panel, click on "Network Connections."
# 2
Right-click the Ethernet network connection with which the computer accesses the Internet and click "Properties."
# 3
Click on the "Advanced" tab of the "Properties" dialogue box. Click to mark the box next to "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection." Click the "OK" button to close the dialogue box. If a "Local Network" message box pops up with an explanation, click the "Yes" button to proceed.
# 4
Right-click on your wireless connection in "Network Connections." If the connection is disabled, you need to enable it. Right-click again if necessary and choose "Properties" in the right-click menu.
# 5
Select the "Wireless Networks" tab in the "Properties" dialogue box. Click the "Add" button in the "Preferred networks" region of the dialogue. This opens a dialogue box called "Wireless network properties."
# 6
Select the "Association" tab of the "Wireless network properties" dialogue. Type your choice of name for your Wi-Fi network in the "Network name (SSID)" field and check the "This is a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network" box.
# 7
Ensure that the "The key is provided for me automatically" box at the bottom of the dialogue box remains unchecked.
# 8
Choose "Open" in the "Network Authentication" drop down menu and choose "WEP" in the "Data encryption" drop down menu.
# 9
Type your choice of password in the "Network key" and "Confirm network key" fields.
# 10
Click the "OK" button to save changes and close the "Wireless network properties" dialogue box. Click the "OK" button on the wireless network adapter's "Properties" dialogue box.
Not 100% clear on what you are hoping to achieve. The purpose of the WiFi hotspot function is that the Tab can be used as a WiFi access point, the PCs you connect to the Tab hotspot should be able to see the internet via the Tabs mobile data connection (3G/GPRS). If you achieved this then you had it working correctly. I don't believe there is any functionality intended to let the Tab access data on the PCs connected to its hotspot.
Hey thanks for the reply. I'm sorry i was not clear.
I'm not trying to connect the PC using the Tablet. I'm tryin to coonect the tablet using the PC.
My PC connect to the internet using Wired LAN. i wanna use the the PC WIFI to send my WIRED LAN to the tablet ( Network Sharing )
Thanks again
As standard, Android can't see and won't connect to adhoc networks (which is what your "hotspot" is).
Search these forums for wpa_supplicant.conf, or adhoc, for the solution.

Dave

Click to collapse
no, you can use both adhoc mode(pc to tablet connection) and infrastructure mode( access point to tablet) if you do the hack.
you need to be rooted and with root explorer installed on you tablet to achieve the trick.
We almost can do the ad hoc patch - but not quite yet - through clockwork recovery - which is still under development. So what other flashing tool can we use?
Hi there,
Seen many posts online, folks explaining how to do it and some ROMs have it, question, does anyone see a clear way of disabling ONLY MOBILE/DATA on 2ND SIM? It seems the enable is for BOTH SIMs... best I could find is use a dummy data-plan, and set the quota to 1MB or smaller value, trying to figure if there's a way to totally shutdown only mobile data, not the actual SIM, so it does not attempt connection (plan-b I've seen folks editing the APN with rubbish, prefer not to go there if possible)..
Thanks for any ideas..
Stormy.
OK, FIGURED This out. This answer is specific to MIUI ROM it might work on other similar devices to 7A..
Two options:
1) Settings-> "SIM Cards & Mobile networks" > "Set data plan" > "Data PLAN" (for SIM2), then in "Peak data limit" set to 1KB, in "When data plan is used up" set "Warn and turn off mobile data" go back one screen, in "Enter data usage" type "10GB", this will automatically EXCEED the limit, and block access to mobile.
second option is:
2) Open the Security Center app, main page will show things to fix, there is a "plugin" named: com.miui.securityadd ("Security service plugin") , however on the security center app the name is not printed, it's an icon of a DROP of WATER, on mine it's second from top on right side, click that then you get the mobile data top-level GUI view.
click "Restrict data usage", under mobile data, check the TOP sim2, the warning "Restrict sim2 mobile data connection from all apps", and clicking restrict will block all apps from sim2/mobile.. there is also a "default apps access" if u really want to account for future apps..
now u know how to disable, only hope you can remember how to REENABLE should the need arise
hopefully will help someone..
